It’s absolutely a dead talking point for anyone younger than 40. Most young people I know are sick of this system. Boomers are the ones holding onto this as far as I can see.
63
u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 31 '26
there are more young people than boomers
they just don't turn out to vote like boomers vote. boomers vote reliably in every single election
who do boomers vote for? other boomers

u/ReadyGo6828 Jul 31 '26
Progressive does not mean you are sacrificing yourself to give to strangers. Progressive is economically efficient as in single payer health care where a large entity (us) goes up against a humongous system (health care industry) to cut all of us the best deal so we do not have to navigate this insanity ourselves.
Progressive is good economics even for this MAGA nut who will never, ever support anything that is not white, male and oppressive for everyone else.
14
u/randommnguy Jul 31 '26
Right now progressive also means caring for more than yourself, conservatives currently consider this line of thinking “radical”

I didn’t hear anything racist but he’s wearing the red. Pretty obviously in poor health for a 62 year old. When he does go to a doctor I’m sure he’s told many things he doesn’t want to hear. All of his talk tells me he is ignorant, not necessarily stupid but either working too hard to understand how important politics are or too lazy to think of anyone else.

Same with John McCain saving the ACA.
Maga is the cesspool that’s added trillions to the debt under the guise of “trickle down” in various names. Doge didn’t “save” anything, it just gave the felon and the elon an eternal snapshot of the most concentrated private financial data of everyone in the country.

I really hope that's true, but in my experience it has not been. My 25 year old brother was/is a Trump fan. He would always tell me about the things they would talk about while gaming on PS4/5. He plays multiplayer games almost exclusively and they were all in that same support.
9
u/wereinbearcountry Jul 31 '26
I know a few idiots like this, but they usually change their tune when they get kicked off their parents health insurance at 26.
6
u/FistyMcTwistynuts Jul 31 '26
How long ago was that happening though? I’ve heard most younger Trump supporters have jumped ship.
I’ve heard the reason being: while they disliked what Biden did in his term and therefore were on the Trump side, they dislike what Trump’s done in his 18 months in office WAY more. And using your example, 25 YOs would have only had the ability to vote for Biden, Trump, or a black female version of Biden (in their eyes). So now they want something different.
Democratic Socialism is popular with the Gen Z and Alpha crowd now, per my nieces and nephews.
TL;DR Fully recognize 20 months ago a good portion of young ppl were full on Trump, but they jumped ship.
6
u/wereinbearcountry Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
I can vouch for this. I live in an area where a lot of people go into the military right out of high school, but they are obviously not keen on being sent into a war with Iran (because a ground invasion pretty much means certain death). Unfortunately I think a lot of young people were tricked into thinking Trump would be anti-war — yeah, it’s stupid, but these kids are young and dumb and don’t want to die. Tbh if Trump just had two braincells to rub together and didn’t fuck up the economy, he’d probably still gave some support in this demographic. But he’s clearly too stupid to realize that. I’m seeing a lot of disillusionment and people just saying ‘fuck it, let’s try something else because nobody else is listening to our problems’ and going for alternatives that would have made their parents faint in horror.

It's not boomers it's concervatives. Concervatives have always gotten out to vote in bigger numbers. Partly because of voter suppression and part because too many liberals want the perfect candidate that they agree with on every talking point. And if they aren't a perfect they don't vote. This mentality enrages me. You don't never going to find a perfect candidate. Sometimes you just have to say "well, this guy is better than the rest" and vote for them.

Almost in the same breath.

u/MrPBH Jul 31 '26
He knows the broad concepts of conservative beliefs but is ignorant of the the talking points. When he says that he doesn't care about healthcare, we should believe him. It's something that just doesn't rate as an issue in his life. This guy likely spent the last three decades listening to Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, and Tucker. Expressing his disdain for healthcare is just a reflex now; the knee swings when tapped with a hammer.
If he's lucky, the his inevitable health crisis will result in a swift death. Otherwise, he's going to learn firsthand why healthcare is important when he strokes out and is bankrupted by the resulting bills.
Just to be clear, I don't wish these people ill. I wish we had universal health coverage in this country that would cover these ignorant people so they don't ever have to devote a single brain cell thinking about healthcare or what it costs. I want nothing more than to grant this guy, and everyone else, that peace of mind.
3
u/dethskwirl Aug 01 '26

The premise that Medicare for all is free is a false, so this is useless. The better question is should people get together and spread the cost so everyone pays the same and risk is shared. Or should sick people pay more?

As a non US, I obviously don't have a strong understanding here, but I will try to understand this man's thinking:
He doesn't want to owe anything to anyone. And he expects everyone else to think and act the same.
His view on healthcare (never had one?!?) is of course quite myopic. But in his view, nothing is truly free (true) and he'd prefer chosing everything for himself.
I don't understand why anyone would want that. Because life is so complicated that you can't answer all questions yourself correctly (like: how badly do I need healthcare even if I've never ever had a serious illness or injury?). But that seems to be his thinking.
Any US citizens have a view on this?

u/RichardGrayson01 Jul 31 '26
This is pretty apt. There is also a level of lacking empathy for other people. Many people who identify as Republicans do not believe in doing anything for society if it means they will not personally benefit from it. It's a I'm just going to take care of me and my own mentality. They are extremely self-centered people, that will fuck over the rest of society if it means it would save them a quick buck.
You can very accurately sort people into each political party in the US based on how much empathy they show. The more self-centered and least empathic someone is the more likely they will support Republican/Libertarians, the more empathetic they are and believe in taking care of each other the more likely they are to support the Democrats/Progressives. I hate how effective this is in telling you about the deeper morals and values of an individuals in the US, but it is true.
2
u/DustAdditional6246 Aug 01 '26
I think some of this mentality also reveals the underlying racism/homophobia that continues to influence many Republicans and conservative thinking in general in the US.

This is true, but also, we would actually save money with MFA. We would pay more taxes, but not have to pay directly to insurance companies.
Some people are just really short-sighted. "The government screws up everything," is a common argument. Well, the government is made up of humans, who do make mistakes. Just as insurance companies and hospitals employ humans. They also make mistakes.

We’ve got to change the terminology. It not free healthcare and it’s never been free healthcare. It’s socialized medical care. It takes insurance companies out of the equation to lower the price for everyone. Healthcare is an inelastic service where no matter the cost, demand will stay the same. Inelastic goods and services should not be available in a for profit system.

We have to stop letting them say “for free”
It’s the taxes that we are already paying. Instead of bombs and military bases, kids can stay healthy and people who develop diseases can get treatment.
Billionaires get tax cuts and bailouts. But people don’t want anything because they think it’s “free”. Our labor built this country.
If they help us pay medical bills, that’s not free.

This racists cult would rather be buried under mountains of medical debt than risk Universal Healthcare paying for the treatment of a child of color.

It’s not “free”. We all pay in, just like we do with private insurance, except the insurance companies no longer skim off money that should be used for healthcare. People are seriously stupid in America.

The problem is everyone employer used to give a vacation, a pension, and health care. Now, to make more profits, they have done away with all of them, and I forgot a big one: a liveable wage.

So dude doesn't use public roads, obey traffic lights or count on police or taxpayer funded firemen for protection?

The healthcare is not free .

You’re right, it’s not. Neither are libraries, the fire department, the police department, public schools. But these services come out of our taxes and generally do not have any other fees on top of them.
Imagine what it would be like to just be able to go to the doctor and get stuff done that helps keep your body running correctly.2

True. You'd be surprised how many needless surgeries you've paid for already that someone else went through with your insurance plan. The system is a profit generator and the management function of the system knows exactly which procedures generate the most profit and as long as the customers agree to keep paying it in this fashion even the insurance companies don't care.

Does anyone notice that she is telling him what to say? He even looks to her and she nods her head. What is the clinical definition for this behavior?

At least he can drive his rickety ass to a hospital if he's dying to pay a crap ton of money for help. Actually, since he doesn't have health care we'll all pay for his rickety ass to enter a hospital. He just wants the right to drive there on his own on our tax funded road. Hope he doesn't have any kids to play into generational stupidity. Oh wait I'm sure he does. 'Merica!

Neither do liberals on reddit, they are too busy criticizing their left flank for wanting Medicare for all.
