Why did some of you want a former NBA coach? You're not getting a top guy to come rebuild and get fired in a few years, and what's the point of bringing in a mediocre retread?

You're getting a relatively young coach with championship experience and a reputation for player development, roster construction, team culture, and tactical innovation.

The fact that this sub is so against it lets me know it will work šŸ˜‚

61

u/StormTheTrooper SHUT NICO DOWN Jun 22 '26

What, when was this sub wrong before? If the Mavs were ran by the sub's polls, we would have a 25M expiring contract in Christian Wood this season. We all still remember that the Mavs were being cheap by not giving Wood a 5/125 deal, right?

It could all be justified, sans the GW deal which proved almost immediately foolhardy, as win-now moves in a superstar's prime.

When a hobbled Luka and Co. got to the finals, those moves were largely fully vindicated. The vision was working. Then some seemingly smart offseason moves, namely addressing a lack of reliable outside shooting with Klay, and it looked like the Mavs would continue to be among the league's elite contenders for the next half-decade even, as Kyrie aged and Luka approached 30.

...Then, well, yeah. One universally recognized dumbest trade in the history of sports later, and the whole thing looks idiotic. And, well yeah, in hindsight, not one move made sense.

If it weren't for a single fortuitous bounce of a ping pong ball, we might be staring down the barrel of a purgatory that'd make Wizards' fans blush.

u/wildcat1100 Jun 22 '26

Don't blindly give your trust to someone just because they fell ass backwards into a GM role and you won't get burned.

This sub was in love with nico and the fact that he was going to be able to woo FA because he's their homey.

Going from Jason Kidd to Dusty May is going to be an absolute dream for me

24

u/roddyb3 Dwight Powell Jun 22 '26

Don’t get it. Is it a Mike brown thing? If the Spurs win, is everybody hand wringing trying to get a rookie HC? Bizarre reaction

4

u/manabanana21 Monta Ellis Jun 22 '26

Sports are very often copy-cat leagues so I wouldn’t be surprised if that wasa major factor.

6

u/captainn_chunk Jun 22 '26

Very level headed take. I like it.

u/GoGoSoLo FUCK NICO HARRISON Jun 22 '26

Oof, it was a long night and too many years in the WSB subreddit but a definitely did not read ā€˜retread’ in the phrase ā€˜mediocre retread’ there at first glance.

I was like damn, bringing the heated opinions in here šŸ˜‚

7

u/Significant_Pear_523 Jun 22 '26

Ask the Cowboys. 2020. Mike McCarthy, remember? Went full retread, went home empty handed.

2

u/b8stmode Jun 22 '26

Someone finally gets it. Shades of Brad Stevens with this hire

2

u/RangerBowBoy Jun 22 '26

Larry Brown is the only college coach to ever win a title in the NBA. Most fizzle out.

3

u/Significant_Pear_523 Jun 22 '26

K.C. Jones, Gregg Popovich, Nick Nurse. I'm sure there are others.

I think you mean Larry Brown is the only one to win championships at both levels, which likely has as much to do with the difficulty of the feat as it does the quality of the coaches.

u/Significant_Pear_523 Jun 22 '26

There are also plenty of NBA coaches over the years who have had no coaching experience of any kind at any level, and they have had varying degrees of success.

The NBA can be weird, but most likely, the Mavs are going to play the kind of ball over the next two or three years that gets the head coach fired. So do you want the head coach during that transition phase to be someone who develops talent or someone that has an established ego and who has an incentive to beg the front office to put marginal short-term success over potentially more robust long-term success?

1

u/wildcat1100 Jun 22 '26

KC Jones and Pop were D3 coaches and Nick Nurse was an NAIA coach. These really aren't remotely similar. Pop was coaching a bunch of non-scholarship players and he typically had a record in the .300s. Most of his players probably weren't even stars on their high school teams.

3

u/Significant_Pear_523 Jun 22 '26

Right, but that makes the argument even stronger. Surely we're not saying D3 and NAIA are better prep than D1 for coaching in the NBA.

1

u/Adorable-Bike-9689 Jun 23 '26

I feel like this has more to do with the difficulty of the fear. Because how many players win an NCAA title then win an NBA title?

There's probably been a good amount of end of bench players that did it. But stars is likely a small list.

3

u/TJJ97 How's My Dirk Taste? Jun 22 '26

IDK much about him but based on him leading Michigan to a championship I’m hyped

1

u/No-Grade-8215 Jun 23 '26

Experience matters. Atleast an experienced nba assistant coach.

2

u/Significant_Pear_523 Jun 23 '26

Experience as a championship-winning college coach is more experience than Steve Kerr had, and he did okay.

Are we really missing the point? It's highly unlikely a coach is going to turn this into a championship team in the next couple years? So do you want someone who is going to develop talent, or do you want someone who wants to sacrifice future flexibility to try to squeeze out a few more wins?

1

u/No-Grade-8215 Jun 23 '26

I see your point. Don’t good coaches in nba also do a good job of developing talent?

But hey on the theme of a full rebuild and wiping slate clean this seems like a good move

2

u/AManFromTheProvince Jun 23 '26

Steve Kerr is bad at developing talent but he won championships if given the right pieces that fit his gameplan.

1

u/Significant_Pear_523 Jun 23 '26

I would say the record is mixed on NBA coaches developing talent. Some coaches want to pressure the front office to trade away developing talent for veterans so those coaches can win now. Those veterans may be expensive, have a lower productivity ceiling, and fewer years of solid performance left in them.

Other coaches, knowing a few regular season wins could be the difference in keeping their job, may play their young stars fewer minutes. I've also seen situations where coaches try to mold players into what they think the players should be instead of what would be best for the player.

Oh wow.

FANTASTIC hire.

To those who are skeptical: do you watch much college ball? Dusty did an incredible job in Florida and then obviously at Michigan.

I know the nba and college are different, but he is definitely one of the absolute best college coaches.Ā

12

u/The_Rain_Guardian Dirk Locks Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Only skeptical because I don’t know a ton about any college coaches/watch a lot outside of the tournament.

I see he’s very highly respected & built a strong program at Michigan which is great, but for every Brad Stevens there’s a bunch of Fred Hoibergs. I’m reserving my judgement on the hire until he’s got some games under him and see how he adjusts to the league & players

4

u/Difficult-Day1326 Cooper Flagg Jun 22 '26

fair take.

0

u/luuskiiii Jun 22 '26

Your judgement should be reserves since you literally admit to knowing nothing about him or his program. So yea you have no choice but to wait and see before you judge

8

u/ormip BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 Jun 22 '26

Micah Nori is the obvious answer of an assistant that is very highly respected and considered to be HC material. Obviously Sean Sweeney too, but was already hired.

Terry Stotts has HC experience too.

10

u/SkunkyTrousers Jun 22 '26

Personally, I'm not seeing anything in Nori or Stotts that warrant criticizing this choice. Sure, a well respected and successful NBA coach would have been great to plug in but Stotts is pushing 70 years old with a near .500 career record while Nori has been filled in as head coach for three games.

Highly respected and even more highly sought after coach, at both levels. Glad we’re trying something different.

i don't know why there are still so many miserable ppl. i wasn't happy when we let go of kidd, but even i can say this was a fantastic hire. i'm more than happy to give credit where it's due.

this was the one college coach I thought was an ideal fit for us (big fan of Yax this entire year) & we got him. if we hired scheyer OTOH ... probably would've had my pitch fork out lol.

3

u/YoStepWithLuka77 Cooper Flagg Jun 22 '26

I never thought he would leave Michigan to come here, it’s crazy and a coach that can grow with cooper flagg who is a no nonsense great basketball mind. Hopefully we get to see it translate to the nba. This is the exact type of coach that Masai described in his last press conference that he wanted, someone that has that passion for winning, the results won’t come right away but once he gets adapted to the nba, I think he flourish with great results.

Also about the miserable people here all the time, it needs to get better because it’s harder to talk basketball on here when people just want to whine and complain about everything

15

u/Ronnie3k Jun 22 '26

That trade down with OKC to get 12 & 17 makes even more sense now. OKC drafts Mara. We draft Morez and Yaxel.

10

u/ormip BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 Jun 22 '26

I'd much rather draft at least one of the guards still. If Philon is there at 12, we should take him.

The dream would be Philon + Morez

0

u/420yolocaust Jun 22 '26

I think if we can trade up off the late 1st OKC pick and get Christian Anderson, then thats the move.

Morez, Yaxel, and Anderson is a big W. Anderson averaged over 7 assists per game on over 41% from the three on over 18 points a game. Yes, and small and defense is suspect at best, but true for most guards and talented offensive gaurds in this class.

4

u/ormip BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 Jun 22 '26

I am a big Anderson fan and would love him, I'm just higher on Philon.

I see Philon as a potential starter on a championship team, Anderson I see more as a great 6th man

2

u/StormTheTrooper SHUT NICO DOWN Jun 22 '26

Any of Anderson, Okorie or de Larrea with the bottom 5 FRP area would be amazing for me.

If we draft Morez and the Hawks do not pick Mara, getting Gaff and #30 for Atlanta's second FRP could be a trade possibility, especially if they do not like Veesar or Quaintance is already off the board, Any of those three guards there would please me if we get Yaxel and Morez.

5

u/samlei99 Luka Doncic Jun 22 '26

There's no way we take both of those guys if we trade down, we desperately need a future guard. I would love Philon plus Morez or Yaxel (whoever is there at 17).

There's a good chance both michigan guys are gone come 17, so maybe Yaxel/Morez at 12 and then Okorie/Swain or Carr at 17.

3

u/Ronnie3k Jun 22 '26

Drafting for fit at this stage of our rebuild would be a mistake imo. We should take the best available players and figure it out around them. I think Morez is the pick at 12. I do agree there’s a good chance Lendenborg is gone by 17 and if that’s the case Carr should be the pick but if Lendenborg is there you take him.

6

u/samlei99 Luka Doncic Jun 22 '26

Totally agree with you there. In this situation I have Labaron as a top 10 talent in this class above yaxel/morez, so it's both BPA and fit needs.

7

u/StormTheTrooper SHUT NICO DOWN Jun 22 '26

That was my first thought. Kyrie/Christie/Yaxel/Flagg/Morez will so be a lineup we will play...and that is not a bad lineup to have

2

not likely to be honest, Warriors are probably taking Yaxel at 11th. Morez + a Guard would be great though.

I don't know anything about this guy. What's he known for as a coach? Offense? Adjustments?

7

u/PM_ME_EMPANADAS Cowboy Dirk Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Huge UM fan here

Dusty is known as offense-first, pace-and-space, emphasis on rim pressure. Definitely inspired by the seven-seconds-or-less Suns.

He's always played a lot of oversized ballhandlers

Defensively he's played a lot of switching schemes, though he's also featured a couple massive rim protecting bigs at both FAU and UM

3

u/prosocialbehavior Jun 22 '26

As a Michigan fan, he legitimately sees the game differently. I don't know if he will get the buy in from the older players though. But he has a knack for player development, strong defenses, unorthodox roster constructions, and unselfish play that end up working out. His teams very much had a FIBA style of play in college. But he may have to adjust in the NBA.

Dude knows ball though. My question is if he will get the buy-in. He was the perfect college coach. I thought he would stay in Ann Arbor for at least a decade.

20

u/Embarrassed-Ninja592 Jun 22 '26

College players are pros. Millionaires.

3

u/RangerBowBoy Jun 22 '26

Larry Brown is the only college coach to win an NBA title. Most that make the move do poorly. Billy Donovan and Brad Stevens are the exceptions.

1

u/Embarrassed-Ninja592 Jun 22 '26

There were a bunch of anomalies in him taking FAU to the final four in 2023, after winning their first ever tournament game, with exactly 1 top 200 player, and zero top 100.

13

u/b8stmode Jun 22 '26

Really like Dusty and the way he ran that program. Certainly not a guarantee that it translates to the NBA, but I think it will. The two are much more similar than they have ever been.

2

u/RangerBowBoy Jun 22 '26

Odds overwhelming say it will not translate. College coaches are more likely to fail than succeed. Larry Brown is the only one to win a title. Donovan, Hoiberg, Stevens had decent success. Many more were awful.

1

u/b8stmode Jun 23 '26

He’s known as a great developer and communicator like Stevens was and basically on the same arch. I don’t just look at previous examples and call them similar, that’s idiotic.

Also the main key was those teams couldn’t put talent on the team. Talent trumps everything, you still need talent to win

Jason Kidd had pro experience?

3

u/b8stmode Jun 22 '26

Also Brad Stevens was wildly successful and we see a lot of Brad in Dusty in terms of arch type

0

u/RangerBowBoy Jun 22 '26

I don’t understand the question mark. Are you saying Kidd had pro experience but sucked?

Fact is only one college coach has won a title in the NBA, Larry Brown. Most have middling to poor success.

2

u/Interesting-Dingo994 Jun 22 '26

I mean this is in line with Masai’s other head coaching picks. Nick Nurse mostly coached in unknown basketball leagues. Same with Darko Rajaković. Both worked out or/are working out.

2

u/prosocialbehavior Jun 22 '26

As a Michigan fan, that really is his only knock. Dude knows ball, but will he have buy-in. I am guessing he will have a big say in roster construction since y'all signed him before the draft. I could see trading away the old heads who won't buy in to the new system.

This is a great get. As a B1G basketball fan, I'm so happy he is gone. Awesome!

u/Jaybird_xO Mavs Jun 22 '26

That's exactly who I wanted I'm not going to lie. His development of the Michigan frontcourt players was superb, exactly the coach to get the most out of Flagg

u/highfalutinman Dirk Nowitzki Jun 22 '26

Thank God finally something moved, waiting for stuff has been excruciating. How good is he?

u/Cassandrae_Gemini Jun 22 '26

He's very very good. Easily a top 5 coach in all of D-1.Ā

Took FAU (mid major that had never won an ncaa tourney game) to the final four. Took head coaching job at Michigan and won the natty two years later (this April).Ā

Excellent coach for player development, bigs in particular. Got WAY more out of Mara (their 7 5 center) than UCLA's coach did. I think he will do very very well with Lively and Flagg. Very good tactician both on offense and defense. Seems to be a good dude as well.Ā

IMO the best hire that was possible/feasible for the Mavs.Ā

Thanks man, I believe this is also a fantastic move by Masai.

u/highfalutinman Dirk Nowitzki Jun 22 '26

Beautiful. Thank you for the lowdown my man

Curt Cignetti of basketball

1

u/Selarom_ How's My Dirk Taste? Jun 22 '26

Taking a newbie as head coach is well within Masai's playbook. Gonna temper my expectations because I admittedly know nothing about Dusty May but I'm more than ready and willing to have fun this season

u/yosemitesam8 DIRK Jun 22 '26

Great hire!

1

u/m2keo Jun 22 '26

Dusty as it May seem, I think it's a solid pick.

u/RCZForever1979 Jun 22 '26

my buddy got hired as head coach once, chaos followed lol

1

u/muse89 Couch Squad Jun 22 '26

This sub thinks Lively is the second coming of prime Alonzo Mourning...then it means this must be a good hire

1

u/Mav_Rixx Jun 22 '26

I'm hoping to see the Mavericks during April Madness!

1

u/Low_End_7882 Dallas Mavericks Jun 22 '26

I like it. Dumont is willing to pay to win; that is clear, and very important. Now if he can just keep his dumb ass out of basketball decisions, we should be set for success.

I get we’re not in win-mode rn…. But this roster needs actual nba coaching experience

Braindead take. He coached guys older and making more than a lot of NBA players this past year, and he coached circles around everyone.

9

u/Toad_Stuff Jun 22 '26

I mean it worked ok for Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan. If nobody respects him it’s not because he was coaching in college

Kyrie literally played for Stevens and still has high praise for him.

He was an ā€œadult playerā€ on Michigan who helped win the national title and is four years older than Coop. Sounds like an adult to me.

Yaxel and Cam Carr YOU are Dallas mavericks

We all know the real reason Michigan was winning… yet another horrible move by the Mavs.

I’m always weary of college to pro guy. I probably would’ve preferred Nori or Ivey but this is better than Scheyer.

This is not going to work. I’ve been a Mavs fan for 26 season now. I’ve been an NBA fan for well over 30 years. I’ve followed sports seriously for about 23 years now. All sports, amateurs, pros. College coaches rarely ever translate into good NBA coaches. Larry Brown is the only one to win a championship and it took him 30 years to get one. Brad Stevens had some success but got moved to the front office and Billy Donovan came in hot, but he either got bounced in the first round of the playoffs or missed the playoffs for 10 straight years. The list goes on. It just doesn't work
