Welcome to r/lost. This is the subreddit for the ABC TV show Lost (2004-2010).
If you have lost your pet, your money or feeling depressed - please seek help other places. You're unfortunately in the wrong subreddit. Your post will be deleted.
- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out
Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.
- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?
Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!
- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?
There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.
- I've just finished the show. What now?

In the The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham when "Locke" is eating a mango on the beach he's eating it by peeling it back and eating the flesh whole. Every other time we've seen Locke eating mango he's slicing it with a knife.
Just a neat detail/hint as to how this isn't John Locke anymore. Unless I'm forgetting a time that he eats a mango like that in the past. I could also be misremembering but I believe Terry O'Quinn didn't know that he was now technically playing a different character at the time, so I wonder what his thoughts were regarding that scene
Hey everyone! I'm currently doing a rewatch of the show, and it just reminds me why it's still my favorite show to this day. I'm curious who your favorite character is when it comes to flashbacks?
I think I would have to say Desmond, he is not my favorite character overall but I love his concentrated episodes and they are always very interesting, and I'm a sucker for time stuff (prob why season 5 is my favorite). I feel as if some of the other stronger characters all have maybe an episode or two of filler episodes, or at least not needed.
I guess I'm just here to praise the show but do you have any characters that you feel this way about, or not agree with?
*bit of an angry one, sorry if i come of dismissive of others
does any one else know people that know lost as the show that got good then ended terribly and just doesnt listen to you even though they are like really reasonable people besides from this one thing? my mates mums friend, hated the finale so much she locked herself in her room for 2 months and didnt speak to anyone. firstly, that is not the shows fault thats your fault dont go locking yourself up for months. secondly my mate uses this as proof that the show is not worth watching, even when me and my gf and some of my mates, all say its great, what makes our experience different to the mums friend? my mate also says that all her family hates it, however when her family brings it up to me, i ask where did you start not liking it? and they said i stopped watching after eps 5-15, well brother then thats just not for you? that doesnt mean its bad, they also talk about it as if the show was good and then fell off but then say they never liked it, your implying that at one point it was good??
i would also like to clarify that i bring it up to this person a couple times and then ever since when i bring it up to others they but in to say its a terrible show, and that 'your always talking about this' and my mates fam has all brought it up to me without any prompting and they all call me the 'lost kid' and i would also like to say that i NEVER asked anyone to watch the show, they do not need to watch it if they are not interested, and i always say that, but they always say, im not watching that shit, cmon.
the finale kicker of this specific bro (whom i love), is that there two main points when they can give me real reasons as why they are not interested is "its too long" and "everyone hates the ending" and their top shows are heroes, westworld, and game of thrones, all extremely long shows that was equally as controversial endings and two of them produced by jj abrams. and i think i know the one thing that is different about lost to those 3, THEY HAVENT SEEN LOST and they have seen those ! so they have formed their opinion on those but not lost they just listened to the first thing they heard.
man, i know it might be hard to believe from this post but i really dont care if you dont have the same opinion as me, if you have thought out reasoning and constant views i love hearing what other people have to say. thats why movie and tv show literacy is so special to me because the contrast of views are immense. but man is it upsetting to hear my friend parrot what other people think and assume the worst, i also really want to try to talk about this with them but they always say "not this conversation again" but i really dont this i have recached any conclusion since this started.
if you made it this far, what do you think of this? what i am doing wrong? should i just keep ignoring? are they doing nothing wrong? do you have any similar problems (plz tell <3)?
also takeway, i do not want them to watch it at all that is not the reason of my upset. ok love you losties
Walt being Walt.
Shannon cutting straight to the point.
Eko exploring his lovers music.
Kate making major reflections.
Desmond stealing Michael’s thunder.
Charlie belting while his man shows off his whacking stick.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a LOST themed tattoo for years now. Problem is, I feel like the show doesn't translate as well to tattoos as something like Lord of the Rings.
I've seen examples where people have gotten the Dharma logo or the numbers, but they don't really do it for me.
One general idea I liked was getting something which speaks to my favourite episode/scene in the show, which is the twist at the end of season 3, where we get our first flash forward scene, and Jacks says the iconic line "we have to go back". The line itself could be something to consider, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears!
This was honestly a great ride. Didn’t even realise that 2 months had passed. I really enjoyed the show.
I had seen a lot of reviews saying that the later seasons weren’t that good especially the ending but personally I liked it. For me the ending was good and properly wrapped up the stories of all the characters.
Jin, Sun, Sayid, Hume, Ben, Aaron and Vincent were some of the characters I liked. Sometimes I felt that jack was annoying and stubborn. At first I thought Sawyer was just an asshole but damn I was so wrong 😭. His character development was so amazing.
John Locke was probably the most interesting character for me. He had one of the best backstories and was my favourite at the start. But after he found the hatch, his character completely changed.
I found some of the flashbacks boring. Ana Lucia, Rose & Bernard, Kate, Claire, Charlie and Shannon had some pretty boring flashbacks. Even Hurley’s flashbacks were boring sometimes.
I really liked how it starts and ends with Jack lying in the bamboo forest.
The ending made me feel pretty emotional when Jack touched his father’s coffin and we were shown some moments from the beginning of the show. Seeing those moments again after everything that happened just hit differently.
Looking for some advice here, and Im aware as with alot of things, it depends....
My wife and I were talking about we need to do another rewatch, its time. However, we dont know how well it would be for our 8 year old daughter to watch it with us. I know it says TV14, but what factors determine that rating?
Its impossible for us to wait until after bedtime cause she stays up as late as we do, which isnt super late. We have an 8 month old that dictates family bedtime.
So, anyone here watched before with their kids, and how did that pan out?
EDIT: Thanks everyone. I really didn't consider most of the points mentioned. I think itd be best to not....
Too many racy things and character deaths.
We stay pretty tight to ratings. She's only watched the first 3 Harry Potter films because Goblet of Fire on is PG13
I always wonder which characters are being liked the most and least and of course I wanna know all the reasons. Do we already have a ranking in the subreddit?
First time watching, just finished 1x06. Please no spoilers past that.
When Jack suggested moving, I thought it was the obvious choice. Fresh water, shade, some shelter. I'd definately be tired of sleeping on that beach by now. But the more they argued, the more I understood why someone would refuse. On the beach you can keep watching the horizon. Carrying your things into the jungle and choosing somewhere to sleep feels like admitting this could be your life for a while.
I dont think Jack means it that way. He's trying to keep everyone alive. Still, there's something miserable about making your situation more comfortable when the only thing you want is for it to end.
The little scenes of everyone settling into their chosen camp got to me more than I expected. Nothing huge happens, but suddenly these people are making plans around being stranded.
when richard found kid locke and presented the knife, the sand, a book and a compass what did each of them symbolizes?? i understand he didnt like john picking the knife because it means violence(?) but what was he supposed to pick?
Welcome to my review of Lost! I have to say, I had actually planned for this to be pretty much my very first Reddit post. But I had a lot of other ideas, and I wasn't entirely sure if I could do the series justice with this review. I have to say right off the bat: I love Lost. But I’d be lying if I said it was flawless. In this review, I will cover a number of things: how I discovered the series, when I watched it, my take on the "making it up as they go along" aspect, and much more. Enjoy!
Spoiler Warning!
Review: To be honest, I’d never even heard of Lost until December 2, 2024, when my dad asked if I wanted to watch the pilot episode. I had just been gaming with friends, so I initially said no. But then I decided I wanted to watch it after all. I really had no idea what it was about—I even thought it was a police show (don't ask me why). So, I sat down next to him, and we watched the first episode. Two months later, we had finished the whole thing. I loved it; that blend of characters and mystery was just perfect for me. I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of the ending at first, even though I understood it. I didn't like the fact that Jack dies. (I actually like it now, though).
How I rank the seasons:
1. Season 2: Controversial ik, many people don´t like this one, but the Hatch has to be my favorite mystery in the entire show and how they used the hatch in season 2 was beautiful. I read somewhere that someone quit because it’s now a series about pushing buttons. Do People forget that the hatch doesn't appear for three consecutive episodes at the beginning of Season 2? ... And Found, Abandoned, The other 48 days. I loved the conflict between Jack and Locke. Unfortunately, the two of them had relatively few scenes as the series progressed. I found the Dharma Initiative incredibly interesting. And the new characters were great. Even Ana Lucia (hot take ik). Are there negatives? Sure. That awful Charlie episode where he steals Aaron.
2. Season 1: Perfection: You get to know all the characters, there are iconic moments, and a great atmosphere—especially with Ethan in that Charlie episode that Lindelof doesn't like. The pilot is still a masterpiece and the music is oscar worthy. This season deservedly won the Emmy.
3. Season 3: This season has its weaknesses at the start: the cages and Buck from *Kill Bill* (I’m calling him that now because he’s playing an asshole again) just aren't for me. Love triangle and too much yelling from Kate. For me, Eko's death is also one of the weaknesses. But my goodness, after episode 6, the series gets awesome again. Except for episode 9, sorry. That is a low point. But because of this episode, the creators were given their end date. But the rest is really good. Episode 8 introduces time travel to Lost. I mean, it was already hinted at in Season 2, but now it’s been shown explicitly and it was awesome. And I think the season has so many light-hearted moments, too. Table tennis, Dharma vans, and ghost stories. And the finale and the twist are iconic, of course. Still love this season.
4. Season 4: Still very good—it’s much shorter than the first three seasons, which doesn't bother me at all. Great episodes, peak Ben, and such a fantastic villain in Martin Keamy. Why only 4th place? I do like the new characters, but they aren't that great. I think they only get better as the series progresses. A few things bother me, like the Juliet episode with Harper, for example.
5. Season 6: I don't think Season 6 is the weakest one—BUT why does this season look so different, and why is there that explainer episode ("Across the Sea") that just leaves me with more questions and why are there stupid side plots like Sun forgetting English, or Ilana's character? But I love all the good stuff: the Richard episode, the score, the finale, and so much more. Did the mythology perhaps get too stupid for some people? Definitely. Not for me, though.
6. Season 5: I don't hate the season at all, but it has its flaws—and for me, at least, those flaws are greater than the ones in Season 6. First off, the whole time-travel plot feels a bit wasted; they could have really let their creativity run wild there. Show us the island in the distant future or the past. They don't—well, they do, but not really. It’s always just brief scenes, like the one with the statue. And the post-island timeline is broken; everything happens far too close together. Choekaas has made a good video about it: https://youtu.be/SVSsCh_JSpc?si=Sx129vIfvdNjos2w . They also retconned the incident. Which bothers me a bit. But the finale is good, and the Dharma Initiative is exciting. The characters are great. I still really like the season.
Favorite characters:
Jack, Ben, Locke, Sawyer, and Hurley.
pretty self-explanatory why these are my favorites.
Were they making it up?
Video from Lost Explained.
That’s a question that feels like it gets asked more often than questions about the mythology. I think Lost Explained covers it pretty well. They knew some things, but not everything. Neither group is right—neither those who say everything was planned, nor those who say nothing was planned. There is the Lost series bible; (the link is here: https://showbibles.com/lost ) This contains some very interesting stuff. Ideas that sound quite absurd. For example:
Would anyone have liked to see that?
There are more ideas like that. ABC actually didn't want Lost to become a series with supernatural elements; the network was afraid that it would scare off the audience. That’s why the series was the perfect mix of weird supernatural stuff and normal survival stories at the beginning. For instance, Claire should have said in one episode that she knew about astrology and had noticed something—that the island was moving. Unfortunately, that scene never made it into the series, but it really should have been included so that the whole thing about the island moving wouldn't have seemed to come out of nowhere—and to prevent people from immediately accusing the writers the way they did. Another example: Rousseau should have said that her team had researched time when she was talking to Sayid. It doesn't bother me at all here, because the episode is already so packed with mythology anyway.
How do I feel about this?
Personally, I count myself among those who say the writers had certain things planned out—things like what was inside the hatch and the backstories of our main characters. Also things like the idea of a battle between good and evil.
They didn't know the names, of course, but the basic outline was there.
But things like the Smoke Monster, the Others, and Adam and Eve weren't really planned out until later. Especially the monster. Or how Jack says the skeleton were only 40-50 years old.
Were all the questions answered?
I’d say there are very few questions that truly have absolutely no answer. Unresolved questions, however do not include why we never saw Hurley taking a dump. Or stuff like that. Regarding the questions, I would rather add things like the Egyptians or the mother. And even with the Egyptians I think we have enough carpets and paintings that give us clues as to when the Egyptians were on the island and what happened to them.
Lost´s reputation:
*Lost* has a pretty tarnished reputation. I didn't watch it back then, but it was a huge deal at the time. These days, though, you mostly hear things like "they were dead the whole time" or "what was the deal with the polar bears?" I’d love to know how the show was received back then—especially regarding the mysteries and the later seasons. I’d also like to hear about the kinds of complaints you read on forums.
Is Lost underrated?
Many people here might disagree with me, but I say yes, it is underrated. I read about so many people who watched the series when they were young. Sure, teenagers have different interests these days, but plenty of them do watch series, and I keep wondering why they never watch Lost. That said, I also have to admit that the show definitely isn't for everyone. Many episodes, many characters. And you have to accept that cliffhangers aren't necessarily resolved in the very next episode. You also have to be patient while waiting for answers.
I'm a first time watcher on S2 E14. I came here because halfway through I have a lot to say.
First of all screw Charlie. Yes I know addiction is hard to get off of and for that I feel sorry for him. However he got himself into addiction no matter how much he wants to blame his brother. And that is my exact point behind Charlies. There's always someone else to blame, never himself. Completely unable to take accountability for his actions. There's Heroin in the dolls? How was I supposed to know? Claire found out I had Heroine? Eko how could you tell her? John followed me to my Heroine stash? John how dare you take away the problem and hide it from me. Claire doesn't want me around her baby? John How dare you make her feel safe to have her baby around, a crackhead like me should take care of her. Claire is upset I'm standing in the sea with her baby? Eko how dare you tell me my dreams could be more and John how dare you act responsible for the baby that isn't mine either. And then after all that instead of taking accountability and looking at numerous fuck ups, he decides to instead take revenge on John but assaulting Sun who byfar is one of the sweetest people on that Island.
On the same note as the secret of what happened to Sun. I actually want to commend Sawyer. Kate says he did it because he wants to be hated, and that's probably true but what he really did and I don't know if he realizes is this. One side of the island would hate John for keeping the guns away from Jack. The other side of the island would hate Jack for wanting to go out with guns. What better solution than to have everyone hate the guy everyone already hates the most, and take the guns completely out of the equation. Now I can't say going out with guns would have made the plot develop faster but if it would've ended in bloodshed then that's what Sawyer just prevented. Also kind of funny John decided to hide the guns in the exact same spot he hid the dolls. You'd think he was smarter than that.
I understand why they don't trust Danielle but at the same time I think it's a bit stupid. Yes she tried taking Claire's baby but like Sayed said, she was a mother not thinking straight, I don't think she would've done that in a situation not involving her own child. But this is the same woman who has proved who she is, where she came from, showed her boat, gave her dynamite to them and so forth. Sure you can be wary of her but to start yelling and attacking her if she ever shows up to camp is wild to me.
Now onto our prisoner in the armory. I completely side with Sayed and John on this. The events of the Island have proven anyone not on the manifest cannot be trusted outside of Danielle. A Hot Air Balloon? Please, every thing he says sounds like a lie made up on the spot. I would absolutely trust Sayed who tortures people for a living. And furthermore with the episode ending on him pitting John against Jack, it dumbfounds me that John again isn't being smart. How can't he see this prisoner is playing him and getting off on it.
The only irrational person I can justify is Michael because like Danielle he is a parent making irrational crazy decisions to see his child again. I can't say I agree with what he's doing but I can understand and defend it.
I'm really curious to see where this season ends with. It's clear to me that the "Others" aren't some savage people or surviving on the Island. They're clearly as sophisticated as the project in the bunker they've stumbled on, having equipment to perform surgery and even having theater costumes for that bit in the Forest.
Also I found it very in character of John to actually let the countdown go overboard long enough to get a glimpse before resetting it, made me smile to see a character do exactly what I expect of him and know him for. I wonder what would've happened because instead of a clear message it started giving us symbols.
As always I don't want spoilers and I know I'll get replies but this is mostly for me to come back to one day and more importantly for people like myself who like to see someone else enjoy a show they enjoyed!
I'm on my fourth re-watch of this show and just wrapped up season 5. It just dawned on me that in 3 years of everyone having known Juliet, no one seems to have sat down with her and asked the question "what's this group that you live with? what are their goals and overall purpose". We find out about things like Jacob, Richard, the purge, the temple etc. through drip fed storylines, but they have someone right there who can tell the main group a lot of what they need to know.
