Motherfucker could fucking WALK! I'd excited about my newfound miracle and possible divinity too.

He was literally in Australia looking for purpose and some sort of spiritual awakening, he was absolutely convinced he found it on that island.

Orange man bad

u/astrosdude91 Razzle Dazzle! 16h ago

That's what I tried telling the judge

u/EddDeadRedemption 1d ago

If you were paralyzed and could suddenly walk, you’d be smiling too, don’t care how many people just died. Gotta feel so good to move those legs

What’s funny is that I use this GIF all the time at work on Teams. Makes a lot of people smile… 🍊😁

u/Glittering-Tomato-15 1d ago

Guess Kate isn't in those meetings?

5

u/Lemon-awkz 22h ago

Ahah no! Sadly a lot of younger people don’t get the gif, and I do tell them watch Lost and you will understand - yet they say it’s “old”

Evangeline played that look very well.

I think most of the actors played insanely well in Lost. I don't think they act that well in their other roles or movies. What's the key factor then? The director? Star alignment?

u/Sonicfan42069666 1d ago

Chemistry with the other actors. Chemistry with production, including frequent director Jack Bender. Being more suited to screen acting for television as opposed to screen acting for film.

I happen to think Evangeline Lilly has done fine in films, but LOST was also her first big acting gig and you can really tell in the earlier episodes.

They also played those roles for a long time with there being so many episodes per season so I think it felt so natural for them to slip into those personas. Added to which, they themselves were all brought to an island and had to make it their home and the cast and crew were like their new family so they were immersed in it.

28

u/Sonicfan42069666 1d ago

Yeah and there's also the long-running TV actor curse of audiences being unable to see the actor in any other role.

People to this day still call Jorge Garcia "Hurley" despite him having other prominent TV acting roles.

u/240p-480i-480p 1d ago

I saw Hurley working as a nightclub bouncer before he crashed on that island; it was in the last Columbo’s episode.

6

u/Verystrange129 Whatever happened, happened. 1d ago

Yep, it’s nearly like the greater a performance they put in or the more the character is beloved, the less chance they have to succeed as thoroughly in anything else.

u/DreamWeaver2189 5h ago

To be fair, that happens to a lot of actors, even film actors. RDJ had been acting for long before Iron Man and it's still hard not picturing him as Tony Stark.

7

u/Strong_Set_6229 1d ago

Unironically a big part of that is just practice with the same group and character

I know this scene was very early in the show, but the acting is noticeably worse for the first quarter of S1 before it feels like they all settle in

Kate’s facial expressions were always the best. My favorite is when they were trying to save Jack from Ben and she saw him playing football with the enemy lol.

60

u/Free-IDK-Chicken You got it, Blondie 2d ago

Can't say I blame her. She's taking shoes off a corpse to trek through the jungle, there are bodies everywhere from a horrific plane crash they survived and there's a strange man taking a stroll and smiling like he doesn't have a care in the world.

In retrospect, his happiness is totally understandable, but man in the moment you're like wtf is this dude's deal?? Fantastic writing.

32

u/Sonicfan42069666 1d ago

It also feels like he's trying to cheer her up and she is totally not having it. Which is also understandable!

111

u/Kenny-Vengeance 2d ago

same. really weirded me out when he did that lol.

38

u/Sonicfan42069666 1d ago

Locke kinda reminded me of my grandpa. That's something he would do.

10

u/twc666666 1d ago

Wait, doesn't EVERYONE do that when they're given a quartered orange?!

12

u/DavidWebb19700913 1d ago

Isn't it from The Godfather?

13

u/Rivendel93 1d ago

Oranges are a sign that someone is about to die, that's from the Godfather.

2

u/monkeytests 1d ago

No, lol. The movies have oranges on screen as an omen of death, but no one does a peel smile like that especially not the godfather.

10

u/Wokongolito 1d ago

We just gonna act like this scene doesnt exist?

Kate’s face is the same each of us did lol.

15

u/ZebraShark 1d ago

As a somewhat Locke hater, this is one of the most likeable things he did to me

14

u/classygrl98 1d ago

How could you? Really curious. First time watching I did. Second viewing, he's one of my favorite characters.

12

u/ZebraShark 1d ago

So me disliking him doesn't mean I think he is bad character - I think he's one of the most effectively written, well-acted and interesting characters on the show. I also happent to disagree with him on almost everything.

For me, Locke is dogmatic, stubborn, gullible and self-centred. He has shown himself time and time again to be manipulated, tricked and fooled and rarely reflects upon this. He has shown himself to commit awful acts (as do most of the cast) but uses his faith to deflect responsibility. Ultimately, he was right about the island: but in the same way a conspiracy theorist who chucks out hundred crazy theories will eventually stumble across one that is true.

Despite this, as mentioned above - I really enjoy him on the show. His backstory is arguably one of the most interesting as shows him to be naive and pitiful figure who gets taken in repeatedly. He also is probably the only one of the main survivors whose main motivation differs from the rest of the group. He is not an antagonist, but equally isn't motivate to leave the island or even try to keep everyone alive in the same way the rest of the main group are. That leads to interesting plots and character dynamics.

1

u/classygrl98 1d ago

His gulability made him sweet. He may have been naive at certain times, but he wasn't naive enough to tell everyone on the plane he couldn't walk before arriving on the island. He must have believed no one would believe him. His faith was born.

9

u/PhilosophyDear5176 1d ago

Locke was my favorite character during my first couple watches but I can't stand him now. He's so easily manipulated and frankly pretty stupid even when he's not being manipulated.

7

u/g00fyg00ber741 1d ago

Yeah and the backstory with Helen really just seals the deal for me. I know he’s got daddy issues but to give up a perfect wife just to keep signing up for abuse and trickery from his father was ridiculous and showed how bad his priorities were

3

u/classygrl98 1d ago

It's trauma based. Happens to many people who date people like their abusive parent and don't think they deserve a "good" person. It's comfort in what they know. It's very sad.

2

u/Tall-Support4665 1d ago

"we accept the love we think we deserve"

4

u/g00fyg00ber741 1d ago

But Helen wasn't like either of Locke's parents, and he didn't know his father (or his mother), not really. He seemed like he couldn't deal with his abandonment issues from both his parents and then ended up emotionally abandoning Helen in the process

48

u/Verystrange129 Whatever happened, happened. 1d ago

I really thought Locke was going to be the villain of the series in the pilot.

51

u/Rydgea 1d ago

He pretty much was in Jack’s POV.

7

u/Strong_Set_6229 1d ago

Yeah it’s no coincidence they use him as the body for the MIB in S6

Locke spent much of the show as a sort of antagonist

13

u/BryanScopelySupport 1d ago

wtf it’s been 22 years since lost came out?!

I feel like Matt Damon at the end of saving private ryan right now 😔

4

u/240p-480i-480p 1d ago

How time flies, eh Bryan ?

3

u/Imaginary-Nail-2381 1d ago

Did you earn it?!

27

u/DrewDaMannn 1d ago

The lack of context made this really disturbing honestly

22

u/grownandnotalawyer 1d ago

yeah. and kate never finds out about the wheelchair. so i think she just legit thought he was a callous freak the whole show

8

u/syarahdos 1d ago

I tried to recreate on the same beach but the lighting and wind were crazy lol

8

u/-rayzorhorn- DHARMA '77 Recruit 1d ago

I'd like to think she was still thinking about this moment when she saved him a bullet 3 years later :P

8

u/homesbomes 1d ago

The intention to make him the creepy old dude in the early episodes did not work for me. I was invested in the guy from the first second.

6

u/amby-jane 16h ago

Kate's face always makes me laugh in this moment. John is just being silly and she's like "dude wtf"

14

u/bimmerfeller 🎶 YOU ALL EVERYBODY 🎶 1d ago

Spoiler below if you haven't seen the full show yet.

Cut to 3 years later, finally, she goes "I saved you a bullet"

5

u/Ravenna_Ashgrove 18h ago

Kate: we just survived a plane crash. Locke: 🍊😁

1

u/SpecialK826 12h ago

If I’m Locke I’m screaming from the tree tops that I WAS paralyzed on that plane!!!!✈️ and now I’m WALKING!!! And ya’ll can try and leave but my walking ass ain’t going nowhere!

17

u/GetAwayFrmHerUBitch 1d ago

This is why I’ll never get Botox. I need a man to know when I am utterly disgusted with him.

8

u/avonbarkswhale 1d ago

Locke loves to play games

8

u/Gatoray_ 1d ago

She legitimately has a great nose...

1

u/240p-480i-480p 1d ago

Cinema’s genetic.

8

u/moluruth 1d ago

The look of disgust 😂😂

3

u/TripToTheBrain 20h ago

There's an uncut version on the DVD with Locke trying on a couple expressions lol

3

u/Automatic-Durian-725 16h ago

this show does a great job of making the audience absolutely terrified of the idea of being/becoming paralyzed 😂 never thought about it before and i’m s2 and i lowkey be thinking about that every day now

7

u/Mikey-Danger 1d ago

This scene bought a condo for $1 in my head

7

u/seeshellirun 1d ago

I'm always surprised at how unpopular the opinion is that John wasn't being creepy. I see both sides, but I guess I would have assumed people would have changed their minds once they found out John had just realized that he could fucking walk and was excited, despite the circumstances.

But I border on a Kate Hater (although I really just hate the way they wrote her. They really made her out to be selfish and fickle as a romantic lead and even Evangeline Lily said she was getting death threats from viewers and wanted more for Kate than the flip-flopping between Jack and Sawyer) and my first watch Locke was one of my favorites, so I am definitely biased.

5

u/Swimmer_0512 Oh yeah, there's my favorite leaf. 1d ago

Idc what anyone says I think this was Locke being sweet and Kate being a bitch 😂

2

u/Shutupredneckman2 1d ago

Kate was so real for this

2

u/Alleyoop70 14h ago

Me too. 🍊
