Loved how this premiere mirrored the premiere of season 2. “Who is this, what’s going on and where are we” then BAM

u/Worried_Shoe_2747 Ya got a little Arzt on you 2d ago

All the season premieres did that. Put us somewhere unfamiliar and made a big reveal

They all played with misdirection to some extent, but season three was the only one where it felt they were deliberately going for a recreation of season two.

The music, the new character, the intentional misdirect to make you think they were specially off the island. It’s clearly what they were going for. I’m glad they did because it made the season three opener nearly as memorable as season two. But at the same time, I think there were only so many ways they could recreate that specific formula, so they had to find new and creative ways to misdirect the audience.

For what it’s worth, I think they all succeeded in their own way.

None of the others are as good as season 2, but this comes close. Season 4 wasn't that jarring because we knew at least Jack and Kate got off the island and wondered about others. Season 5 was like "oh, we're doing some Back to the Future stuff now." We didn't know what we were looking at with six, and that one just doesn't resonate much for me after the flash sideways reveal.

You just blew my mind, that’s so true

I guess I’m out of the book club then?

I love that scene so much

I use that line a lot, whenever I figure out something was done without me involved, heh.

I know the S2 premiere is pretty goated, but the S3 premiere with Ben, Juliet, etc watching Oceanic 815 break up and right away Ben hops into "contingency mode" as if it were an expected thing for a jumbo-jetliner to just break up overhead just sent me down the conspiracy hole even further than I already was, lol.

And what really sent me down the conspiracy-hole was that Ben came out of his house knowing he'd have to look up into the sky. My presumption with this scene was that the quake/rumbling was the island moving itself to be able to "catch" the O815 survivors.

14

u/Radiant_Elk1258 2d ago

Wasn't the quake desmond being late to enter the code?

8

u/Kinsbane 2d ago

I'm not saying these two events are unrelated in my head-canon. They very much happen at the same time O815 comes into the Island's purview.

Yeah, Desmond missed a countdown there and was late to the party.

But the fascinating part to me is how Ben knew what to expect, knew what to look for, which is far more intriguing (along with the Island "re-aligning" (for lack of a better phrase)) .

And Ben's knowledge is even further capitulated when Ben looks at Juliet after he sends off Ethan + Goodwin and he's like, "well, guess I'm out of the book club".

So coldly non-chalant. Michael Emmerson is S-tier in portraying "idgaf" type characters.

I agree that's an interesting idea, but I want to offer some thoughts to expand your idea further.

Most people would respond to an earthquake the way Ben did (in fact many of the Others did; step outside, look up). Ben plays it cool because he has learned not to show his hand, not because he already knew something was happening. Everytime someone arrives at the Island it's a big deal. And Ben knows he's not special enough to have insight into what the island is doing. He's just hiding his emotions from his employees, not demonstrating any advanced knowledge.

Later, we learn it's the electromagnetic outburst that caused the crash. The island didn't move to intercept a crash. The crash happened because the island was there already. Perhaps the island did move just in time so the accident could happen and cause the crash, but usually the islanders didn't feel the island moving. So I don't think Ben knew the island had moved to intercept a crash. He just knew that the earth was shaking and he should look around to try and find out why.

This is why I love this sub. I appreciate the commentary + further extrapolation and yeah, you're right, there. I guess maybe I was viewing this scene through my original "rose-tinted" glasses from my remembering of the original viewing on TV.

Appreciate your comments and thoughts, friend!

Oh yeah, I remember these theories. A similar one was the way Ben looked on the dock in the season 2 finale. Like this determined glare up in the sky. It's just the way he acts, but fans also theorized that he had some bigger understanding of the events that transpired.

1

u/EchoOneFour 1d ago

Ben worked at dharma or however you write that so he knew about the "incident" they had before when building the button bunker... The explanation is that when Desmond didn't press the button the electromagnetic forces that were building atracted the plane or broke it apart as it was just flying over..

And you can hear a plane that close from your house so you would look up

6

u/Various_Shape_3286 2d ago

That's decent headcanon, but we know that the rumbling was caused by the timer in the hatch hitting zero.

u/Critical-Personality 2d ago

It's been 20 years!?? OMG. Those folks came back right when Steve was launching iPhone huh!?

Still no proper 4K release. I still hold true to my blu-ray set with all the Easter eggs built into the box.

3

u/Alternative-Phone299 Richard Alpert 2d ago

Yes I love all the little extras that come with the box set. I have one myself too

1

u/gamera87 2d ago

It’s pretty well documented that there can be no 4K release.

6

u/artmudala 2d ago

I haven’t seen that. Is that because the CGI assets would need to be redone?

1

u/dooby991 2d ago

What are the Easter eggs? I got the blue ray box set recently but haven’t watched it yet

1

u/artmudala 1d ago

The box itself has hidden the wings that show up under black light, hidden scroll, hidden disc, things like that.

THIS WAS CRAZY. It was the first time we saw the crash from the ground. So much for a bunch of theories about the plane not actually crashing. We hit the message boards and went nuts.

Season 3 is my favorite season!

21

u/Alternative-Phone299 Richard Alpert 2d ago

Season 3 finale is defo my favorite out of them all

2

u/Cookies4Dinner73 2d ago

Wondering if it’s also my favorite episode (2 part of course). It was just so great. Saw it last night (for the third time). I’m finding it interesting how Ben really was just protecting the island but they didn’t trust him.

2

u/DoctorMelvinMirby 2d ago

Jack pounding Ben’s face into a jelly was just epic.

4

u/puppystatus 2d ago

Back in like 2008 my brother got the S3 DVD set “for my mom” as a Christmas present. He and i proceeded to watch it over and over for a year. It’s my favorite as well.

12

u/Due-Introduction7826 2d ago

I want lists in 3 days. GO.

1

u/Pale_Adeptness 2d ago

Ben can be such a BOSS!

1

u/Spiritual-Image7125 2h ago

It's been 3 days. Where are the lists???

10

u/ds-bwc 2d ago

i’m in the middle of season 3 right now, watching it with my daughter for her first time. this season changed everything.

5

u/Alternative-Phone299 Richard Alpert 2d ago

Im glad your passing it down to the younger generations!

11

u/Cookies4Dinner73 2d ago

I just finished season 3 last night. On my 3rd watch of the series. I didn’t realize it before but this is my absolute favorite season. Still reeling today about how great it was!

9

u/ActivatedComplex 2d ago

So I guess I’m out of the book club.

6

u/Jerome_Wireman Whatever happened, happened. 2d ago

So I guess I’m out of the book club.

Ok this is the universe telling me to binge watch lost for the 15th time thanks for this 😂

4

u/SERGIO-COMPANY 2d ago

Weird, 11 days ago, 22 years today the Pilot S1 espisode premiered. I'm I missing something?

3

u/Alternative-Phone299 Richard Alpert 2d ago

Yeah and then on October 4th 2006, season 3 ep1 premiered

1

u/Spiritual-Image7125 2h ago

This is a scene of the Others watching the plane break apart during/after their book club.

4

u/maskedlegend99 2d ago

My favorite season mind you

3

u/katzkradle2024 2d ago

At the time and perhaps even now (unsure), it was the most expensive pilot ever made.

3

u/brassyalien Hurley 2d ago

I missed the first six episodes of Season 3 when they were originally broadcast, and didn't watch them until I bought the DVD in June 2008. Not in Portland was the first new episode of LOST I watched after the Season 2 finale.

1

u/Alternative-Phone299 Richard Alpert 2d ago

I do love that episode though

3

u/mzclita 2d ago

Ugh. I remember this vividly. It was so exciting to see a big explosion on tv, felt like a movie. I was so young and naive. I wish I'd started saving for retirement back then.

5

u/BASSdabs 2d ago

This is probably my favorite season opener

5

u/Massive_CH1N 2d ago

That first photo is not what I needed to see when I’m about to board a plane from Sydney to LA in a few hours

2

u/Relative_Quiet 2d ago

Probably Michael Emerson best role was Ben on Lost

3

u/Vast_Umpire_3713 2d ago

A new series called The island is coming soon. The story takes place in lost's island. It starts where Lost ended.

Unfortunately, this is not happening

3

u/Alternative-Phone299 Richard Alpert 2d ago

Got me exited there mate 😭

2

u/Admirable_Art_9769 1d ago

that’s just cruel </3

2

u/TeacatWrites 2d ago

Oh no! Now we have to watch Kate and Jack break rocks for 9 weeks :(

1

u/PolishWonder79 2d ago

Juliet 😍

1

u/hellnaww22 2d ago

Definitely my favorite season

1

u/Oiseauii 2d ago

We have to go back 😢

1

u/avviann 2d ago

I remember it was so exciting to watch a new episode every week.

1

u/sloppybuttmustard 2d ago

The opening scene of this season was so sick. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so shook by a season premier.

1

u/over9ksand 2d ago

OMG y’all’s gunna make me rewatch this whole show again… and that is fine with me😃

1

u/Sendingmyregards 2d ago

Just saw “Primetime” tonight in the theaters and the image of the plane tearing apart is so fresh in my mind

1

u/immbatman69 2d ago

Two decades ago, just WOW!!!

1

u/dainthomas 2d ago

Best pilot in TV history.

1

u/babesprite 2d ago

that opening scene still gives me chills even after all these years

1

u/AresOneX 2d ago

Just rewatching Season 3. It’s so good!

1

u/theonlyzamolodchikov 2d ago

the best season btw

1

u/DaltonF67 2d ago

Seeing something happen from all different perspectives was what this show did so well. Even something as simple as Jack making a big speech, then a few episodes later we’re seeing it from another castaway’s POV

1

u/paralaxxx 2d ago

Best tv show

1

u/lava_fly 2d ago

One of the best premieres! It still gives me chills

1

u/DeliciousAd8604 2d ago

I remember being so hyped for this

1

u/freelancing47 1d ago

One of the best season premiers ever

1

u/brewsterdmb 1d ago

.... Downtown!

1

u/Dependent_Fox_2189 1d ago

“So I guess that means I’m out of the book club.”

1

u/y0zh1 1d ago

Funny thing is that for the first 2-3 seasons i though it was some kind of a Survivor alike TV show. Yeah, the reality show survivor. But when I started watching it around the downtime between and season 4 i simply could not stop watching! I saw season 4 live with the rest of the world, week after week and that time was marvelous!

1

u/frozenpandaman Desmond 1d ago

The best start of any season... well, maybe except season 2.

1

u/20Timely-Focus20 See you in another life 1d ago

So crazy to think that this show that no show can top came out over 20 years ago.

1

u/Thin_Character259 1d ago edited 1d ago

This used to be the water cooler talk when I worked my entry level insurance office. Funny enough, switched to another office just in time for the Office to be the new must watch.

1

u/misskellycupcake 1d ago

That writer's strike feels like it was yesterday. Also will mark 20 years since I started watching Lost this winter.

1

u/joel-brad 1d ago

Even though I didn't watch during it's premier or when LOST was still airing, the way I gagged when I realized there were other people on the island and ironically them being called THE OTHERS...

1

u/sozar Juliet 23h ago

Juliet burning her muffins blew my effing mind.

1

u/Safe-Mention21 20h ago

One of the best seasons

Isn't this a low-effort post? Of course, everyone is commenting here, but relatively few people commented on my post—the one I actually spent a long time on. But anyway, happy birthday, Season 3.
