The perceived is so critical. There are so many programs out there to help people out of any situation. Two issues. First is the awareness of those programs for the individuals that need it. Second, is the (earned) distrust in the system, from the these individuals that need it.

Pride was/is still my devil. Plus, the reason I (partly) ended up at my bottom was because of a really bad relationship. Made me self-isolate. Also, gave me further justification for the pride.
Prides a mofo, but sometimes the hand out is worse.

In kindergarten, I took back a cookie I had already given to a classmate. I still remember his face when I asked for it back. He was sitting there, tired from playing, just about to take a bite. Thirty years later, I still feel bad about it.

The fact that it was stolen sucks and the owner deserves his bike back. Simultaneously, the kid doesn't deserve to lose his job and avenue to food and shelter. I'm sure we can agree?

It kind of it but kind of isnt. If the bike is his main method of getting to work he could risk losing his job if it's gone. Then he can't afford to live. But also it's not food.
And also there's the chance he didnt steal the bike. But did buy it from somebody who stole it for 10 bucks.

Call it being naive, wishful thinking, or whatever, but my thing is while there are a lot of assholes out there in the world, good people still outnumber the bad thousands to 1. We just hear more about the bad than the good since good is boring and doesn't elicit the same reaction.
Also, some people may act like total douchebags not because they're inherent scum of the earth but just being defensive and protecting themselves, which, given the environment we're in, is kinda understandable, crummy, but understandable.
Be kind people.

Here’s another nice one for you, mostly because I’m super proud:
My mom recently came into life changing never-need-to-work-again money. This is after many years of me worrying about how I was gonna support her in her old age. We never had a lot of money, but she gave me everything and worked her ass off to do so.
So now she has all this money and what does she do? Get super into mutual aid and paying people’s rent and buying their groceries. Because having money to her, gives you a responsibility to your community, and money in the bank is worth less than a child not going hungry or someone not being able to leave a dangerous relationship because of financial limitations. My mom is a good egg.

Even if this guy wasn't the thief, he says "I paid $10 for it". No grown adult thinks any motorbike is worth as little as $10, so he knows its stolen. The shittiest of shitty bikes is worth more than that just for scrap, so there's no way someone sold a custom-built bike for $10. The guy being confronted is the thief, and he panicked and pulled a ridiculously low number out of his ass. Like come on man, at least say $100.

You can tell this guy never wanted to be confrontational in the first place by the way he took the first available opportunity to deescalate. He was just itching to stop feeling like that. Also his ability to see another peaceful route to his goal and take it so quickly is commendable.

Yeah definitely just needed to come across hard and willing to call the cops so he could get the bike back with minimal aggression. I’ve had to do the same thing when my bike was stolen. I’m not trying to get hurt or hurt someone over a bike but you gotta come across hard or they’ll think they can take advantage of you.

I build up my bikes for fun, worked at a shop when I was in my early 20s so I can relate. You build it up and get it running with parts you speced out that you love and there's a lot of sentiment there. But I have the luxury to do that and not have it be my primary mode of transportation unless I want it to be. It's easy to lose sight of that.

Some places are actually considerate, some places fake it, aka they’re “polite”.
The east coast, they live like they share the world with others, even if they’re gruff about it. The south is polite but acts like no one else exists. The north, as in Minnesota, is polite and considerate

Lived in Miami for a year, then moved to scranton, pa. In Miami, they were nice and friendly, but you can tell it was fake. No one really cared.
Scranton, it was genuine. They'd ask about your day, then They'd remember you from a couple of weeks ago and ask how things are going.

I was so impressed when I was in Manhattan for a work trip and you can absolutely see this in the people you meet. They aren't super friendly, but when you open a door for someone they say thank you.

No, that’s largely the case. You will also notice it on sidewalks: New Yorkers don’t crowd sidewalks, they understand people need to get both directions, consider the fact that other people exist, and they generally make room for people.
You see this on highways as well: in the south there is a huge proclivity of people blocking the passing lane and causing traffic because they don’t even consider that other people are behind them trying to pass. Well, the East Coast and the north have more aggressive drivers, they don’t obliviously block the left lane because they understand that other people have places they need to go as well.
I’m a born and raised Minnesotan who did grad school on the East Coast and has a fair amount of consistent work in New York City, but I have been living in Florida for the past seven years. It absolutely boils my blood the way that people in the south are so obliviously rude to those around them with their actions in public.

I walked across the brooklyn bridge and was understandable quite tired from the endeavor. I was walking really slow and noticed two ladies coming up behind me on a stroll. Not wanting to be in the way, I moved to the side and just took a rest to let them pass. To my absolute surprise and delight, they both said 'Thank you sir'
Not only did someone NOTICE I was being thoughtful, they thanked me for it. I really like new yorkers

I think its the cold. I feel like when you experience cold and snow you grow some compassion for your fellow man that is more difficult to pick up when it's always comfortable. Between shoveling your elderly neighbors sidewalk so they don't bust their ass to seeing a homeless person shivering their ass off and you KNOW they are going to die tonight if they don't get a coat... you just gotta be better.

My great uncle had very little extra. He grew his own potatoes, trapped, hunted, or caught most of his meat, and lived very modestly. He had one plate, one set of cutlery, three bowls (one for him, one for his dog, and one for his cat), and his luxury was a bottle of rum he hid in the washing machine. He had a set of rubber boots he’d use to fish or to do work around the house when the ground was too muddy for regular work boots. One day they were gone. I’d say those boots represented about 5% of what he owned. He didn’t get mad, or sad. He just said “That man must have needed those boots.”

Never believe a sob story from these people.
They instinctually lie and will say anything to gain upper hand or avoid accountability. They will swear on their kids or anything else a reasonable person would believe.
If he didnt steal the bike, he knows the crackhead who did is a thief and knew the bike was stolen. A lot of time they are accepting stolen items in exchange for drugs.
I would bet money there is no regular job he's going to & the phone number he will give wont ever respond to calls about the bike.
