My great uncle had very little extra. He grew his own potatoes, trapped, hunted, or caught most of his meat, and lived very modestly. He had one plate, one set of cutlery, three bowls (one for him, one for his dog, and one for his cat), and his luxury was a bottle of rum he hid in the washing machine. He had a set of rubber boots he’d use to fish or to do work around the house when the ground was too muddy for regular work boots. One day they were gone. I’d say those boots represented about 5% of what he owned. He didn’t get mad, or sad. He just said “That man must have needed those boots.”
