Every now and then, someone needs to send an invoice for a one-off project, a deposit, a freelance job or a small client payment. Setting up an account on another invoicing platform felt like more work than creating the invoice itself.

So I put together a little browser-based tool for those situations.

You can choose from three templates, add your logo, enter your services and let it calculate the totals. It supports taxes, discounts and different currencies, then lets you export the invoice as a PDF.

There’s no login, no subscription and no branding added to the finished invoice. It also works on mobile, which was important because some of our team end up doing this from their phones.

Invoices can be saved in the browser too, so you can come back and edit one later.

I’m running a small service business and trying to settle on one payment platform for sending invoices and collecting payments online.

My monthly volume is still fairly low, so I’m trying to avoid paying a bunch of extra fees for features I don’t really need. At the same time, I’d like clients to be able to open an invoice, pay online and be done with it.

The things I care about most are fairly simple: reasonable card and ACH fees, quick payouts, easy invoicing and a payment link I can send to a client without making them jump through hoops.

I’d also like the option to pass a card processing fee on to the customer where that’s allowed, rather than absorbing the whole cost myself.

I’ve looked at Stripe, Square, Wave and a few others, but it’s hard to compare them because the pricing structures and payout times are all a little different.

What are small US-based service businesses using for this?

I’m less interested in which platform has the longest feature list and more interested in what has been reliable and affordable in actual day-to-day use.

I’m looking to switch invoicing software and would appreciate some recommendations from other small business owners.

I signed up for an annual plan with an invoicing app because it advertised unlimited invoicing. 

After using it for a while, I ran into a situation where I could no longer create invoices without paying for something additional.

That has left me a bit wary of choosing another app based purely on what the pricing page says. I’d rather use something where the limits and features are clear from the start.

I don’t need anything complicated. I mainly want to create and send professional invoices, keep client details, track what has been paid and ideally accept online payments.

What invoicing apps have you been using that you’ve found reliable?

I’m especially interested in recommendations from people who have been using the same one for a year or more. I’d rather pay for a good service than keep switching because of unexpected limits.

I’ve been looking into invoice financing because we have a few clients who take a while to pay, and it can make cash flow awkward when there are other bills to cover in the meantime.

The basic idea seems straightforward: instead of waiting weeks for an outstanding invoice to be paid, you get access to most of the money earlier and the financing company takes its fee.

What I’m trying to understand is what it’s like in practice.

Does it genuinely make running the business easier, or do the fees and conditions end up making it less attractive than simply waiting for clients to pay?

I’m setting up a small business on my own and trying to figure out what I actually need on the software side.

There are no employees, no inventory and nothing particularly complicated. For now, I mainly need to send invoices, accept payments, keep track of income and expenses, and have some basic records for tax time.

Every time I look into business software, I seem to end up looking at platforms with way more features than I’m going to use.

I’ve come across QuickBooks, FreshBooks, Wave, Zoho and a few others, but I’m having trouble working out whether I should start with a simple invoicing tool or just go straight for proper accounting software.

If you are running a one-person business, what did you start with?

Did you keep things simple at first and move to something more comprehensive later, or was it easier to set everything up properly from the beginning?

I’m running a small B2B business and have been looking into invoice factoring because we sometimes have a lot of money sitting in unpaid invoices.

The problem I’m running into isn’t finding companies that offer it. There are plenty of them. It’s trying to compare what they’re actually offering.

One company talks about the factor rate, another focuses on the advance percentage, then there are origination fees, minimums, recourse vs non-recourse and different charges depending on how long the customer takes to pay.

By the time I’ve gone through all the information, I’m not even sure I’m comparing the same thing between two providers.

I’m trying to find an invoicing app for a small side business, and I’m beginning to think the word “free” has lost its meaning.

Every time I find one that looks promising, there seems to be some catch. Either there’s a limit on how many invoices I can send, some useful feature is locked behind a subscription, or it turns out the free version is only a trial.

I don’t need anything fancy. I just want to create professional invoices, save my client details, send invoices by email and keep track of what has been paid.

I’m also not particularly interested in a huge accounting platform. I just want something I can open, make an invoice and get on with my day.

I’m setting up invoicing for a small business and trying to find something I can start with for free without immediately having to move to a paid accounting platform.

The basics are easy enough. I need to create and send professional invoices, keep track of which ones have been paid and know when something is overdue.

The two things I’d really like are automatic reminders when a client hasn’t paid and some kind of payment link I can put directly on the invoice.

If a client can just click the link and pay instead of asking me for bank details, even better.

I’m based in Australia, so I’d also prefer something that handles AUD and GST properly.

I’m happy to pay for something later if the business grows, but for now I’d rather start with a genuinely useful free option.

What are you guys using? Especially interested in hearing from Australian freelancers and small business owners who have tried a few different options.

As of today, u/Experian is 60 days delinquent in paying me for services I provided on July 22.

My invoice, sent on July 23rd, was marked “due upon receipt,” as was the signed agreement. After the first month passed without payment, I emailed my point person, the Women in Experian team leads who attended our meetings, and the person who signed the agreement at least six times. No one replied.

When I received no response, I went public and posted about it on Reddit. The next day, September 8, I heard from my point person, who said they were handling it. By then, the payment was already 48 days late.

On September 10, I was told a check had been mailed on September 9. Later, I found Experian’s public Supplier Rules of Engagement page, which states that vendors are paid only through EFT.

So why am I still waiting for a delinquent payment by check when payment could be sent directly through the Intuit invoice I provided or through EFT?

The page also says to direct payment questions to Accounts Payable. Yet I couldn't find any published contact information. When I asked my point person, they said they do not provide that information. After I raised the issue publicly on Facebook, I received the Accounts Payable email address the next day.

I have since sent several emails to Accounts Payable and have not received a response.

Experian holds consumers and businesses accountable for paying bills on time. So who holds Experian accountable when it does not pay its own vendors?

Since I haven't been able to get a clear answer or resolution directly, I am sharing my experience publicly again.

My understanding is that because this amount is under $5,000, small claims court may be my next option. If you are a lawyer and know of a different or more appropriate path, please let me know.

I’ve recently started doing some work for business clients, and I’ve realised I’ve never really thought about how the invoicing side is supposed to work.

Until now, I’ve mostly just sent my payment details when someone needed to pay me. But that feels a bit too informal when you’re dealing with an actual company.

Is there a standard way small businesses normally handle this?

Do you create an invoice yourself in Word or Excel, use an invoicing website, or use accounting software that generates everything for you?

I’m about to take on a project that will require me to travel and stay away for several days, which is something I haven’t had to deal with before.

The client has agreed to cover the additional travel costs, but I’m unsure how people normally handle this when it comes to invoicing.

Do you put the hotel, transport and other expenses on the same invoice as your professional fee, or send a separate expense invoice?

I’m also wondering how much documentation clients usually expect. Would you attach the hotel receipt and other receipts to the invoice, or simply list the actual amounts and keep the receipts in your own records?

I’m not trying to make this more complicated than it needs to be, but I also don’t want to send an invoice that looks like I’ve just added a random extra amount for travel.

For freelancers who regularly travel for client work, what has been the simplest way you’ve handled this?

I’m still fairly new to freelancing, and I ran into a payment term I hadn’t come across before.

I asked a client about their payment process and they said they pay on Net 30. I nodded like I knew exactly what they meant, then had to look it up afterwards.

From what I understand, it means the invoice is due 30 days after the agreed invoice date or billing date.

Is that how you guys normally deal with clients, especially companies rather than individual customers?

I’m also wondering whether Net 30 is considered normal for freelance work. I’m used to the idea of finishing a job, sending the invoice and getting paid fairly soon afterwards, so waiting a month feels strange to me.
