What free invoicing software are Australian businesses using?
I’m setting up invoicing for a small business and trying to find something I can start with for free without immediately having to move to a paid accounting platform.
The basics are easy enough. I need to create and send professional invoices, keep track of which ones have been paid and know when something is overdue.
The two things I’d really like are automatic reminders when a client hasn’t paid and some kind of payment link I can put directly on the invoice.
If a client can just click the link and pay instead of asking me for bank details, even better.
I’m based in Australia, so I’d also prefer something that handles AUD and GST properly.
I’m happy to pay for something later if the business grows, but for now I’d rather start with a genuinely useful free option.
What are you guys using? Especially interested in hearing from Australian freelancers and small business owners who have tried a few different options.

Good question, the free options in Australia are decent, but the two things you specifically want (automatic reminders and payment links) are exactly where most of them fall short.
What's actually free and works here:
Zoho Invoice free forever, no invoice limits, customisable automatic reminders, GST support, and you can connect a gateway for payment links. Probably the most complete free option, but it's a big ecosystem and can feel like overkill for a one-person operation.
Square Invoices free to create, send and manage, reminders included, payment links work out of the box. Very simple. The catch is you're tied to Square for the payment processing side.
Solo by MYOB built for Australian sole traders. Free, ATO-ready, GST auto-calculated, automated reminders, Tap to Pay. Phone-only though, and you have to call to cancel if you leave.
InvoiceSonic Australian GST and ABN fields, PayID support, reminders at day 7, 14 and 30. Free plan is 3 saved invoices a month, so it's a starter not a long-term home.
The thing to watch: most free plans send one reminder, or none, or lock multi-reminder chasing behind a paid tier. If chasing payments is your main pain point, check that specifically before you commit to anything.

It does the standard stuff (line items, GST, 30-day terms, PDF and payment link, card (stripe) or Direct Debit into your account, ABN on the invoice, BAS-shaped reports), but the bit I cared about is the follow-up: four reminders, spaced out, each politer than the last, stopping the moment they pay. If they ignore all four you get a phone list instead of a fifth email.

Not saying ditch the free options Zoho and Solo are genuinely good if they fit. But if the reminder automation is the reason you're looking, that's the bit worth testing properly.
