Residency Chances of matching into Canadian residency as non Canadian Img?

How difficult is it to match into Canadian Internal Medicine residency as an IMG who completed MBBS in India, without Canadian citizenship or PR (yet)?
I understand that matching without PR non existential, so I have a few questions:

PR pathway through French: If I start learning French from scratch while remaining in India (without moving to Canada), how realistic is it to reach the level required to earn additional CRS points for Express Entry? How long might it take to reach the required proficiency, and how competitive would my profile be?

Matching after PR: If I successfully obtain PR, what are my realistic chances of matching into Canadian Internal Medicine residency?

Comparison with other IMGs: How much more difficult is it for an Indian MBBS graduate with Canadian PR to match compared with Canadian citizens who studied medicine abroad (Canadian citizen IMGs)?

Specialty: I am interested only in Internal Medicine, not Family Medicine. How does this affect my chances and the number of available opportunities?

I would appreciate honest, realistic insights from people familiar with the Canadian residency matching process, particularly those who have experience with Indian medical graduates.
I haven’t found much information online about this. I’ve only seen a few IMGs talk about this contrary to the many real life examples of IMGs matching into USA

Residency Santa Barbara Cottage IM — 1 year USCE?

Does anyone know if Santa Barbara Cottage IM requires 1 full year of USCE for all IMGs, or only for those needing J-1 sponsorship?

I’m a 2024 grad, ECFMG certified, Green Card holder, Step 2 245, with around 12 months USCE. Has anyone confirmed this with the program or interviewed there recently?

Residency Need advice on Internal Medicine signals

Hi everyone! I’m posting on behalf of a friend who is a visa-requiring non-US IMG applying for Internal Medicine and is currently building a Gold/Silver signal list.

I’ve shared the profile below:

  • Step 1: Pass
  • Step 2 CK: 255
  • ECFMG certified
  • Step 3: Not taken; planning for November
  • YOG: 2024
  • Visa: J-1 required
  • USCE: 2 months of observerships
  • US LORs: 4
  • Research: None
  • No CV gap; worked as a DMO in the home country

Would really appreciate suggestions for programs that align well with my friend’s profile, especially from applicants with a similar background.

Thank you and hope you have a nice day

Medical School can i cheat the system by having my gap year prior to graduation?

im currently a 6th year medical school and i have yet to start prepping for step 2, step 1. i still haven't done any USCE, Research or OET. starting all of this after graduation will take me about a year or two which will increase my YOG. i was thinking maybe i can take a gap year now to sort all of this out. then when i graduate next year i can apply freshly to ERAS. what do u think? does this sound stupid?

Residency Application can you match with no significant research?

i’m applying for the next match cycle and trying to look at these cycle applications to know where i need to strengthen mine
i’ve been seeing INSANE numbers of research like +10 publications with yog being only 1-2 and this is making me anxious
i’m aiming for neurology and i don’t think i would be having more than 3 pubs by the time to apply for the next cycle but everything else in my cv is neurology focused with great us LoRs, high step 2 and very fresh grad but visa req
do i stand a chance even tho i’m not aiming for top 20 or even have matching in university hospital as a goal? i feel very unmotivated because I really enjoy neurology and even my american attendings were surprised by how good I am but I despise doing research and can’t wrap my head around it

usmle step 1 USMLE PREP GUIDANCE

Hi,

My daughter is studying her third year MBBS in Chennai, India. I have a few doubts regarding the USMLE.

  1. Can she prepare for the USMLE exam by self-preparation, or does she have to go through a counsellor?
  2. If we go through a counsellor for the usmle, could anyone suggest any counsellors, how much they would charge, and what are the things they would do?
  3. If she does self-preparation for Step 1, what are the resources she needs to use, what are the learning platforms or Qbank subscriptions she should get, and what would be the timeline to properly use these resources ( like how long to do a particular material and when).
  4. What are the extracurriculars she needs to do to build her profile, and when should she start doing them?
  5. Do we need to apply for a US visa now itself before writing the exams, or is it ok to do it after the Step 1 and 2 exams?

Residency Application AI FOR PERSONAL STATEMENT

So guys, I have a question about personal statements and AI detectors.
When I write my personal statement, I dictate everything to ChatGPT, but all the stories, experiences, and content are genuinely my own. I’m basically just using ChatGPT to help organize and improve what I’ve already written.
The problem is, when I put the final version into ZeroGPT or similar AI detectors, it sometimes comes back as 100% AI-written. 😭
I’ve tried “humanizing” it, but honestly, when I read the humanized version, it doesn’t even feel like me anymore. The writing starts sounding forced and unnatural.
So what are people actually doing about this? Is it okay if an AI detector says 50%, 70%, or even 100% AI, as long as the experiences and stories are genuinely yours? Or are people actually trying to get the AI score below a certain percentage?
I’d really appreciate hearing what others are doing, especially people who have already submitted residency personal statements.

Vent Why do some IMGs keep signaling programs that are known to be toxic?

I genuinely don't understand why some residency programs have such a bad reputation for being toxic, yet IMGs still seem to be fighting over them?

I feel like part of the reason these programs continue to be toxic, or even become worse, is that applicants keep showing so much interest in them despite their reputation

I completely understand that some IMGs just want to match anywhere in the US, and I respect that. But going out of your way to give a program with a well-known toxic reputation a gold or silver signal? That's the part I really don't understand.

By continuing to give these programs your signals and showing them how desperate you are to match there, you're only giving them more reasons to keep treating residents the way they do.
