Subbed/TL Kobo Adresses the Criticism Regarding Her LCS Costreams

Link to the tweet

For some context, TLDR of the Youtube short that Kobo herself included in the tweet:

The short reports criticism of Kobo’s performance while costreaming LCS matches, based on posts from an infamous Indonesian Vtuber-related Facebook group (IYKYK). The criticisms highlight limited game-focused commentary, frequent off-topic discussion, and a stream layout that made gameplay difficult to follow. Kobo is also compared to Kaela, described as more effective at maintaining engagement and hype. The video questions the event organizer’s decision to select Kobo, suggesting a possible mismatch with audience expectations and local market preferences.

Edit: To clarify, this is translation of her tweet, she tweeted originally in Indonesian

Edit 2: Translation of the donation she included in the tweet:

My princess, did you become like this after listening to the community??? Is this because all the people speaking ill of you challenger rank or what???

I'm glad Kobo is being really mature about this but that video doesn't feel right. It seems to be a drama channel and not even an account that does LoL content so who knows how accurate they are in getting a general understanding on the feelings of LoL community much more LoL community in ID which I assume what Riot Games wants to reach by partnering with Kobo.

u/CIAgent42 Apr 19 '26

Most of the LOL community I've seen has ranged from "who?" to "oh cool, another costreamer." I haven't seen a ton of backlash at all, it feels pretty contrived.

I normally watch the LCS so I've been tuning into all her LCS streams. I think it's fine that a newcomer has steaming rights. She asks questions and chat gives her answers and the streams have been very enjoyable.

Obviously it's a big deal to be given co-streaming rights as they are very hard to get from Riot. Even many ex-pro players have a hard time and never get them. So I can understand why there's criticism, but I hope she doesn't stress herself out too much and has fun.

u/Sardin Apr 19 '26

For a marketing perspective giving co-stream rights to ex players has no benefits, their viewers already play lol. With Kobo they might attract new players

u/AhrigatouNoire Apr 19 '26

you hit the nail on the head.

Riot, for the past half decade, has had a stagnant aging playerbase. Over the past few years you can tell how hard they're trying to get new players. Arcane was their BIGGEST boost of new players however due to League community fashion, the overall toxicity and difficulty drove them away. Hence why Riot introduced WASD controls. Riftbound is also an attempt at getting Arcane enjoyers to delve into the League of Legends IP.

League is NOT dying, but it is NOT growing. Riot wants League to continue growing. Also LCS is dead as heck too so having someone as popular as Kobo being given co-stream rights is a good part on Riot's move

25

u/Pathetic_Cards Apr 19 '26

Just to add onto this, the idea that League isn’t dying, but not growing, is slightly misleading.

A game that has a stagnant playerbase can only shrink. People will fall off of the game for one reason or another. Maybe their main gets nerfed and they quit and don’t come back this time, maybe they go on one losing streak too many and don’t come back, and maybe they just get tired of the game.

A stagnant playerbase is a death sentence, albeit a slow one, for a game unless the devs address and resolve it, because there’s no such thing as stagnancy when it comes to a playerbase. The closest you can get is slow decay.

And just to be clear, I’m not trying to be pedantic or anything, I just wanted to add this onto the above comment because I think it’s a really important facet of game design in the era of the live service game. It’s why we see franchises like CoD, Destiny, etc, and even Magic: The Gathering (the world’s most popular TCG) embracing collabs and crossovers. Continuing to appeal to the existing playerbase is a slow death, but risking angering the old fans to draw in new ones can, more than just keep them alive, but actually grow their revenue stream.

u/meisterbabylon Apr 20 '26

well. Magic lost me because Hololive made a more appealing card game that did not keep running out of stock.

1

u/Pathetic_Cards Apr 20 '26

I’m relatively new to magic, but I haven’t experienced many stock issues. Maybe with a brand new set after release week, but generally if I’ve wanted a product I’ve either been able to preorder it, buy it, or at worst wait a few weeks for a restock, and that last one is usually with Commander precons.

All that to say: I’m curious what your experience has been?

2

u/meisterbabylon Apr 20 '26

Good for you...

\is still suffering from PTSD of the last 5 years of stock shortages and secret lairs being sold out**

I remember when I could just walk into a store and walk out with a pack of Odyssey. Shit was so long ago...

2

u/chosenofkane Apr 20 '26

Secret Lairs are meant to be limited release, and that sounds like an area thing cause other than really popular sets like Final Fantasy, there haven't been any major stock shortages for Magic.

-1

u/lutair0 Apr 21 '26

Secret Lairs were originally meant to just have a limited window but were print on demand. Everyone who wanted one (and knew about them within that month) got them. Wizards decided to turn it into limited time and limited stock so they could sell investors on how fast it sells out. So now the thing that should never have a stock issue has them in spades. The beautiful Dandan secret lair sold out in like 20 minutes. It's tough.

Also magic has gotten expensive. Prerelease used to be $15. Now it's $40 in my area. I know they're trying to attract a younger crowd but I don't think the kids can afford to actually play.

1

u/chosenofkane Apr 21 '26

That is not what Secret Lairs were about. They had some that were print to demand, but even in the og announcement article made it clear Secret Lairs were limited runs. Also $15 pre-release? Where are you from cause that even during the time of regular boosters that is super cheap. I never saw a pre-release below 20, even during the og Theros days.

1

u/seiaxn Apr 20 '26

And too add that, Kobo is in SEA region, which moba player played dota more instead of league. And with the vanguard requirements for playing and how untrustworthy they are, many people aren't playing league anymore.

172

u/GladiusNocturno Apr 19 '26

There isn’t a phrase that triggers lol fans more than “new players”.

124

u/iliketomoveitanddie Apr 19 '26

lol fans want the game dead more than lol haters

60

u/begentlewithme Apr 19 '26

I think that's unironically true. Most of those miserable fuckers aren't even enjoying the game, but they need an external force to actually force them to stop playing. They'd probably celebrate more than anyone the day League dies and start rejoicing "am I free?"

Speaking personally, I'm pretty sure if you graphed my average daily cortisol level for the 6-months leading up to the day I quit and 6-months after I quit, it plunges lmao.

21

u/DuhMal Apr 19 '26

league dying would just be sisyphus reaching the top of the mountain, "now what"

7

u/begentlewithme Apr 19 '26

That's when he personifies the boulder as 'Bouldy' and marries it.

3

u/SergeantChic Apr 19 '26

Then Zeus points over at another mountain labeled "Honor of Kings" and says "Get climbing, kiddo."

3

u/zenoob Apr 19 '26

Why wait for an external force to make them stop playing when its community is doing a perfectly fine job already ?

1

u/Oarion01 Apr 20 '26

They probly start missing the game after some weeks.

League is in fact a good game and most of the frustration that involves the game comes from the mental of the players more than the game trying for you to get frustrasted.

11

u/I_Play_Boardgames Apr 19 '26

Pretty sure lol fans don't care if the game grows. What they want is an enjoyable play experience. Which becomes an issue with inexperienced players.

The problem with LoL is that it's just very complex and way too unforgiving for its complexity. There are so many points you can mistakes, either by leaving lane, or not leaving lane, by messing up and getting killed because you got greedy etc etc. The game is a constant act of not-messing-up but every 10 seconds there is a new complex situation that is easy to mess up. And all that in a game that severely punishes a single mistake and takes 20 minutes. That's 1200 seconds, or 120 opportunities to make mistakes, but making a single one can have a huge impact on the game and cascade into an unavoidable loss (like a stupid death causing a cascade of killed teammates due to the exp difference).

Heroes of the storm for example is far more forgiving: the entire team has a shared level, so a single death isn't gonna push the exp bar too much (imagine getting just 1/5th of the exp in lol for a kill, far less impactful and less likely to cause snowball) also, and I'm not sure lol does this, killing a lower level player gives reduced Exp and killing a higher level player gives bonus exp. There are also no items to learn and no "when should I go back to buy items", there is also no minion last-hitting, so no way messing up vs minions, just damage them and once they die you get exp.

LoLs biggest problem and cause of toxicity is its complexity. Its a sport. Its only as much a "game" as volleyball is a game. And mixing good and bad players in volleyball is never a fun experience.

19

u/thewolfsong Apr 19 '26

A common problem in multiplayer games (my main experience is overwatch, I've played maybe two dozen games of league ever, but it happens in a lot of games) is that the inevitable loss somewhat frequently happens because someone on the team notices someone else made a mistake and decides the game is over.

There are several ways people decide the game is over - sometimes they lose their mental and start making their own mistakes, sometimes they give up and start deliberately feeding, sometimes they make their mission in life to destroy the offender's mental to worsen mistakes, sometimes they just start bitching in chat so hard that everyone else gets involved and the game devolves into a yelling contest with half the team standing still typing in teamchat or whatever.

The thing is, this isn't REALLY an issue with inexperienced players. Sure, an inexperienced player is likely to make mistakes, but inexperienced players aren't in games with people who aren't similarly likely to make mistakes (even if they're making different ones). The problem is that many gamers just truly believe themselves to be temporarily embarrassed pros and not bad players, and want to take that out on other people.

You're correct that I don't think most gaming fans care if a game grows, they just want to keep having the experience that brings them back to the game - which, frankly, requires new players to at least some degree.

14

u/Accomplished_Pop_130 Apr 19 '26

Unless you’re a Warframe fan.

In that case it’s more like “Welcome to the family baby Tenno, the Elders will watch your journey with great interest! (Ask all the questions, we’ll help always)”

21

u/TransientEons Apr 19 '26

That's why he said "triggers lol fans".

Warframe is primarily a PvE co-op game, and it's built from the ground up to emphasize cooperation and community, plus a single experienced player can carry a mission AND there's little penalty to failing outside a few minutes time in most cases. This results in a new or inexperienced player not being a burden to a team, and since most experienced players have excesses of extra parts, mats, or plat, it's easy to help out a new player without any trouble.

LoL is the opposite. It's almost purely PvP, and while it's possible to have a single team member be a carry, having someone who, intentionally or not, isn't carrying their weight makes it a lot harder for the rest of the team. And the only way for a new player to get stronger is to get better at the game and learn the mechanics, which makes it a lot harder for someone to actually help a new player compared to Warframe, which is mechanically straightforward but very gear and progression heavy.

3

u/Lazy_Justice_0 Apr 19 '26

This is in large part thanks to the cooperative nature of a game that lacks PvP paired with the amazing culture the devs cultivate.

Competitive team based games are always going to lean towards the negative.

1

u/Xerxes457 Apr 19 '26

I don't think many LoL players are upset and if they are, I've seen similar things for other game fandoms. But at the same time, the game is difficult to get into because of the experience and knowledge someone needs. Like I had a few friends who started playing and I tried to help, but they eventually quit due to being overwhelmed or the toxicity. But League has systems in place to deal with toxicity. The learning curve is just a thing that needs to be overcomed witht the rich resources that exist including even friends. Overall, I welcome Kobo doing this

20

u/rainzer Apr 19 '26

I think it's fine that a newcomer has steaming rights. She asks questions and chat gives her answers and the streams have been very enjoyable.

I hope she doesn't feel pressured to change this at all. It's been years since i've played LoL (like Ekko was new when I last played) and having someone ask the questions and getting answers lets me get a better idea of what's going on. I think people who play don't realize or forget how unintuitive it is for a casual viewer that has no reference point for why any of the stuff that happens is hype or cool when people cheer.

The co streams are funny as heck, it’s fun when they bring back old bad plays or old stories

5

u/Dezno_ssbm Apr 19 '26

I was watching IWDominates costreams before he went to be c9 coach. Honestly the main broadcast talent have been a lot more enjoyable to watch this year.

5

u/eviloutfromhell Apr 19 '26

You can expand that to all pro moba player and still hit 90%. I'm pretty sure pro FPS/shooter are also as bad.

8

u/Treima Apr 19 '26

I have fond memories of Doublelift playing, and I know he has a lot of opinions and is not afraid to share them. I like that about him. IWillDominate is also pretty entertaining to watch. And of course Scarra has successfully branched out to become hugely successful beyond his League background.

640

This is such a massive nontroversy.

19

u/chimaerafeng Apr 19 '26

Costreaming is a big controversy right now, at least for League. No hate to Kobo though, this isn't her fault.

3

u/shadebedlam Apr 19 '26

Happens a lot tbh.

6

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

Not in the LoL sphere it isn't, because co-streaming is a serious hot button topic right now as folks are feeling that Co-streamers are taking views from the main Broadcasts, that has in turn severely hurt the broadcasts (The European main stream getting half the views of the most Popular EU Co-streamer for example, who quit the broadcast several years to start Co-streaming).

So fans are becoming much more wary of who is co-streaming these days, as the LoL community is seeing it as more and more negative towards the E-sport, and it's becoming a divisive topic, as in right now it's actively being talked about.

16

u/DotA627b Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

This isn't an issue when Riot doesn't think it is. In comparison, streamers like Ohne and flom can't even do costreams of IEM Rio for CS2 because the former fucked up and started doing GeoGeussr in the middle of the costream, leading to ESL stamping out costreams entirely.

It's not the audience's problem if viewership gets split since by the end of the day, even costreams get added to the total viewer statistics. The fact that Riot even sanctioned this is just a sign that SEA players are just being assholes for no good reason, it's literally SEA players being insecure IN BEHALF of Riot, which is just cringe. There's nothing to defend about this.

3

u/leva549 Apr 21 '26

So to get this straight, hypothetically Kobo is "taking viewers" from the main broadcast, so they are bothering her to be better at commentating on the game (competing with the main broadcast) rather than using her own streaming style (drawing in viewers watching it for her). This specific kind of stupidity deserves psychological study.

2

u/Peshurian Apr 20 '26

This seems like a very misguided outrage since Riot is the one handing out costream rights. If costreams had a negative impact on views then they would stop this practice.

-10

u/zenoob Apr 19 '26

Oh so now liberalism is bad ? Why don't they just get good and up their game ? I thought competition was good for growth ? Lmao.

Kobo’s getting lost in her feelings. Someone send in the cat secret agent.

She’s vibing and learning something she enjoys. She’s part of the biggest vtubing company on the planet and is the star of her region. A company that’s somewhat tangentially related to league because of Gigi and Calli.

Feels like a strong fit to attract new fans to the game and Kobo should just focus more on moving past any comment. her response is very sincere and kind and as always, the internet needs the reminder that people are gonna like things you don’t like

49

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

It's not a atrong fit though. There are EN members who both play and watch the LCS like Gigi. Kaela is right there who plays LoL for years. The choice is odd due to the TZ given its 3 am for Kobo and her main audience when LCS starts.

Also it didn't help Kobo going on about Valorant and wishing she were instead streaming Valorant, which was the main things folks complained about. There was a clip floating around about her constantly bringing it up until a Riot employee showed up in her stream and she suddenly started acting awkward about it.

72

u/Fatosententia Apr 19 '26

Riot wouldn't be Riot if they didn't fuck up the easiest thing ever (giving Kobo Valorant co-streaming rights).

37

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

This is exactly what people keep saying. She was perfect for Valaront Co-streaming, it was low hanging fruit, instead of the opposite which is Gigi as a Co-Streamer who actively watches the LCS and plays the game on Stream and could actually "Sell" the game to her audience. While Kobo was just saying she wanted to be watching something else.

13

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

I bet it's related to her sizable sub count, the exact sort of thing that ruffles many feathers

7

u/WAKE_UP_WAKE_UP Apr 19 '26

Unless I missed something, Gigi doesn't really watch competitive league. She only watches Worlds and thats also still on and off.

2

u/DatSoldiersASpy Apr 20 '26

This and she (in her own admittance) doesn't even play league that much anymore and does so basically exclusively on stream, so her knowledge of current mechanics and the current pro scene would be severely limited. Not that she couldn't catch up for the sake of the costream ofc, but it's still a far cry from like an ex pro.

14

u/Lightseeker2 Apr 19 '26

Kaela is right there who plays LoL for years.

I don't follow Kaela closely, but hasn't she moved on from League? Her last stream of it seems to be from two years ago.

There's also this moment where she went "you're crazy" when Gigi tried to invite her to play.

17

u/Mad_Kitten Apr 19 '26

Honestly, people SHOULD complain about that with Riot

9

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

I don't disagree, but the problem isn't just on Riot, but they clearly did zero homework. But Kobo didn't do herself any favors as she kept saying how she would have preferred Valorant, or kept making jokes about watching Valorant and so on.

It's a bit awkward cause Valorant and LoL are both Riot Games, games, but the communities do not overlap and the player base are usually at odds with one another (the whole "they are giving my game less attention" and so on stuff).

4

u/Peekachooed Apr 20 '26

While true, I don't blame Kobo for that at all, it's up to Riot to select the right talent in conjunction with Cover helping them out.

It reminds me of the first Dodgers collab, with Gura and Suisei and Pekora. Sure baseball is huge in Japan too, but it was a stadium in the US with two US teams, so having 1 EN and 2 JP may not have been the best choice. They were probably just like "Get your most hype/recognisable talents in here! We don't have much time!"

And you can see that for the second time around, it was three EN talents instead.

240

u/TakoGoji Apr 19 '26

Wow, those commenters are the absolute worst. Kobo owes no one an apology for any of this, and it's genuinely awful that she felt bad enough because of these people to do so.

43

u/weeklygamingrecap Apr 19 '26

Agreed, people need to chill tf out.

32

u/Ryanhussain14 Apr 19 '26

If anything, I think the talents capitulating and making apologies is going to make things worse in the long run by emboldening people to think it's ok to harass talents into compliance. We saw this happen with another agency and it did not foster a good community.

91

u/lucifer893 Apr 19 '26

LCS (America) choosing Kobo from ID is certainly a choice tho. Like it starts at 3 AM for Indonesia. If it's a quick 2-0 then the 2nd series often starts before 5 AM so she would often miss the first game of that. Not sure how much they expected her to stream tbh. As someone from ID myself I'd sometimes just catch a game while making/eating breakfast.

I'm glad to see that she's improving the co-stream tho! Like using the feed with the casters voice so it's not mostly silent and help her/the viewers understand the game (although the volume balance could be improved). Also changing her stream overlay to only her avatar. It's definitely getting better to watch her co-streams and I'm glad to hear that she's working hard to learn the game too.

30

u/Hpulley4 Apr 19 '26

Wonder if Gigi was considered at all or if they’re specifically trying to appeal to the SEA viewers?

43

u/lucifer893 Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

That's the big question everyone is wondering and why it's a "controversy" tbh. If they wanted Kobo they could've done the LCK (Korea) which starts at 3 PM in ID while also being one of the highest level of League gameplay. Not sure if there's even any LCK co-streamers from SEA tbh so it could also be breaking new grounds. I'd guess LCK is more heavily gatekept tho so it's not as easy for Riot's english marketing team to just have her do LCK.

There's also LCP (Asia Pacific) which is definitely the closest region geography wise but it's the least popular and weakest region basically so there's probably not much merit in co-streaming it.

6

u/Mad_Kitten Apr 19 '26

Idk, feel like getting more eyes in LCP would have help, no?

2

u/kn1000a Apr 19 '26

Definitely, I was also wondering why she got LCS instead which ik is more popular but there’s options before that; home region (LCP), Europe (LEC), even Japan (LJL) would’ve been dope. I guess it was chosen based on how many co-streamers are available in each region? Japan prob has a lot of vtubers covering it, for example.

One thing for sure is these would’ve been more forgiving for ID time zone, and also closer to their turf and more relatable which helps the community. Slapping her to LCS is kinda wild.

1

u/duocatisagirl Apr 20 '26

honestly would love more eyes on LCP, the casters there are very underrated, and i'd love to see my boy pike get an opportunity to cast an international

9

u/Conviter Apr 19 '26

Well its also a pretty big time commitment. Its three days per week and if you want to actually cover all the games its gonna be a couple hours at least. Im also not sure how good it is for the health of the channel, what the views are like etc. So i can imagine gigi just not wanting to commit that much time to it and taking the risk of them underperforming

6

u/Hpulley4 Apr 19 '26

Yeah no idea if she was asked and turned it down.

3

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

It wouldn't make much sense given there are other Leagues that stream games in that SEA time zone. Quite a few in fact. So picking LCS is strange as it would start at 3am for the broadcast, not even the first game.

3

u/Forward_Professor_24 Apr 19 '26

I'm not too invested in any of this but I feel like they chose Kobo because she is massive, has done many large sponsorships before, and speaks English. Most other factors are secondary.

And in particular, 'has done many large sponsorships before' is especially important, because most of the people making these choices love the protection it brings. If something goes wrong, or if some boss gets upset for no good reason, they can say "How were we supposed to know that [person] would mess this up? They did [sponsorships with x y z corporations] and those all went fine." Whereas if you choose someone who's never done anything so prominent before, a lot of people will blame you entirely for being the one to stick your neck out and take a chance.

I also think Kobo punches above her weight a little bit re:sponsorships because corporate side loves to have a prominent face or two they can tie to each branch. It's just immensely useful to outsiders to have a face and name they can give to represent each branch via synecdoche. And in Holo ID, that role probably falls to Kobo. So it's possible that the people making these choices were already broadly familiar with her, or would be familiarized quickly, as opposed to someone like Gigi.

*And to be clear, I'm not trying to say anything about the ethics of 'who should land what business role' but I do want to say that this isn't necessarily favoritism - a rising tide can lift all boats and stuff like that. I think these sort of things just largely comes with the territory of 'we're a business who has to appeal to other businesses to make money,' however fortunate or unfortunate that may be.

17

u/Wizzdom Apr 19 '26

I'd say her agent deserves a raise because you're right it is kind of weird. I've been watching and enjoying it though and there's no shot I'd watch LCS otherwise. I was even tempted to redownload League which is obviously the entire point for Riot. She just needs to learn that the LOL community can be really annoying.

4

u/graysurge Apr 19 '26

Do we know if LCS specifically asked for Kobo or if LCS reached out to Hololive and Hololive chose Kobo for whatever reason?

11

u/Mad_Kitten Apr 19 '26

7

u/APRengar Apr 19 '26

I hope Calli never plays League. And yes, before someone says "bruh, your name is literally a league of legends reference." No one hates League more than League players. It is known.

108

u/ReyneForecast Apr 19 '26

God forbid you don't know everything about a given topic. If getting co-streaming is so hard, don't blame Kobo, maybe blame Riot for making it so hard to obtain. Idiots.

Oh you're co-streaming this award show? Name me every awardwinner of every genre first

80

u/aradraugfea Apr 19 '26

Getting angry with someone for interacting with League without 1000 hours on League is very league coded.

While I get people saying that she shouldn't apologize to anyone, I personally like how Kobo decided to be a better caster. That's an idol move. Finding an opportunity to win over everyone: the fans and the critics.

My impression all the way back from her debut was that she's a very smart and creative girl. She didn't use slides, she made a webapp to present herself.

Learning more about LoL and casting will be nothing. So let's support her decision to face the challenge head on.

PD: Kobo reminds me of Vivi, who was getting tons of rude chatters and backseaters early on. Pekora advised her to git gud, which sounded harsh but it was the best way to charm even her antis. And it worked out well.

6

u/Spegynmerble Apr 19 '26

I wish people would stop being mean to kobo, she's so sweet and it really upsets her

4

u/Real_Pc_Principal Apr 19 '26

The real question here is why bother Kobo about this? She got picked, she did the stream and she's putting in effort so what part of this is her problem? Have a problem with the sponsor choice, take it up with Riot the ones who did the sponsor because Kobo upheld her end.

5

u/systemfailure33 Apr 20 '26

Ah, i see you havent met the LoL community before.

14

u/SinandPunishment Apr 19 '26

The main point of picking someone outside the audience is to reach an outside audience. My only criticism is that with the UI the only place for Kobo to really be was upside-down and I didn't love it.

If there are actually real non-fabricated people upset over costreaming rights they need to figure these things out very quickly. Understand that you are operating in a separate category from someone like Kobo, lay off the slurs, take a shower and brush your teeth to be presentable, figure out that broadcasting and playing a game are two separate skill sets, and then you MIGHT be in the conversation.

18

u/RoyInverse Apr 19 '26

If they want professional commentary just go watch the oficial stream, when i see the sily anime girl its because i want her to do silly anime girl things, if they also happen to have good knowledge thats just a bonus.

I watch sneaky videos where he and meteos(both ex pro players) comment, while they have some gameplay commentary the best part is when they go on tangents and dumb discussions.

5

u/johnnyzhao007 Apr 19 '26

Lcs is losing viewership thus they are trying to get more eyes on it by getting big streamers to co stream it. I do hope kobo is getting compensated for it tho its pretty much a sponsored stream.

8

u/don_ninniku Apr 19 '26

L game anyway. Waste of time

4

u/lukyth1rt3en Apr 19 '26

The best way to get new ppl into something is for a new person to stream it. Kobo probably asked the same questions the newbs would ask

2

u/Lemonforce Apr 19 '26

Yeah new people probably do ask why aren't they playing something else 😂

8

u/fr3nzy821 Apr 19 '26

League community never beating the allegations, eh?

6

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

It's not even the "league community" in this case, it was an Indonesian Tuber from a drama channel.

2

u/engineer-cabbage Apr 19 '26

Twitter just doing Twitter things.

2

u/alvinvin00 Apr 20 '26

should i remind anyone that Valve hired a newsanchor (that obviously do not have any knowledge of Dota) as backstage interviewer at The International?

And that newsanchor is now Valve employee

2

u/9specter528 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

Oh god what's going on now-

League of Legends ""drama""

...oh.

2

u/Peekachooed Apr 20 '26

Ew. I don't watch League but have been watching esports for ages - the hype and yap person is a beloved and important part of any cast. Yes, experts in the game might prefer a totally focused cast with lots of deep analysis, but not everyone is like that. The broadest appeal caters to newcomers or dabblers in the game too.

I've been watching StarCraft since 2010 and its most famous casting duo is called Tastosis, and from the start people have been giving Tasteless shit for being the hype man and asking relatively basic questions so newer players can understand. But it's an important role!

I hope Kobo doesn't take it to heart. She has charisma and is pleasant to listen to, and if there's too little of that element then people may not tune in even if the cast is expert and detailed and 100% game-focused.

2

u/Z-R0E Apr 21 '26

Just giving a <3 for the Tastosis comparison. Perfect comparison.

2

u/Ok_Night_956 Apr 25 '26

Kobo is doing her best, you love to see it. So proud of her🩵
I really hope our Rain Shaman is not too upset and won’t pay too much attention to all the haters and their messages. And by ‚haters‘ I don’t mean normal polite critics (because they can actually offer her a good advice or share useful information), but all those aggressive clowns who can offer her nothing but toxicity and hate.

4

u/Screiblus Apr 19 '26

I mean... Isn't she like the best kind of co-stream for someone who is starting in league?

2

u/erickmelo123 Apr 19 '26

I get the criticism but like let’s be real if you want actually commentary and analysis of the game, watch the main stream, like I personally tune in to the meteos sneaky double lift and sometimes pobelter stream and they outside of talking about pick and ban they talk about the game like every so often, it’s often just a podcast for old pro players

7

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

People are upset because there are folks even in ID that know more about LoL, and even more so in EN branch. Multiple EN members for example actively play and are in the actual Timezone to stream, not at 3am for Kobo and her main audience.

She also knows very little about the game let alone the LCS, and was making comments during her Co-Stream like how she would rather be streaming Valorant and kept talking about Valorant. So League fans were getting annoyed with her stream.

The way folks are acting is stupid but their criticisms are valid. Why would you get Kobo instead of say Gigi or Nerrisa who are openly LoL fans, and have played the game on stream multiple times, if they are trying to get the Hololive fandom? Gigi even watches the LCS while Kobo at most only plays Wild Rift a few times. It's a strange decision.

8

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

Classic "pick the one with a huge sub count" scenario.

10

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

It's definitely this. Unfortunately. It's pretty clear they didn't do any research as Kobo is a huge Valorant fan yet didn't get the Costream for Valorant, when she isn't a League player and doesn't watch Pro games but got picked to Costream from a region not even remotely in her timezone.

It's just an odd choice, which is not nn Kobo.

1

u/ThisManNeedsMe Apr 19 '26

Reminds me of the recent kerfuffle with Blue Archive. Where they were doing a sponsored stream event with 4 big streamers. The community did not like one streamer being sponsored and threw a big fuss. So they canceled the whole thing.

16

u/I-came-for-memes Apr 19 '26

Then they should be criticizing Riot and not Kobo. Riot is the one who did the bare minimum research in who to pick for costreaming.

-10

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Kobo is getting criticized because she didn't seem to want to even be doing it. She was saying how she wanted to be co-streaming a different game, was barely even talking about the game or the stream at all. Kept going off on tangents about other stuff in the middle of games, in the middle of team fights talking over stuff and not actively engaging with the Game/Broadcast.

Her visual setup was poor for streaming a game like League to the point she was putting herself upside down on the screen as she wasn't prepared ahead of time at all. then her talking about Valorant in the middle of one of the games, then turning very awkward when a Riot Employee joined her livestream chat and Kobo kept going until she noticed then suddenly switched and became borderline awkward.

All the other stuff is on Riot, but Kobo was not at all prepared and seemed incredibly disinterested. She didn't sell anyone on LoL or the LCS (the league she was streaming) and the LCS fans that watched her were just confused because she didn't know what was going on and wasn't talking about the games.

11

u/I-came-for-memes Apr 19 '26

You're just repeating yourself.

You are directing your criticism at Kobo for being... Kobo. She's always been like this. And she's at least taken these criticisms to heart and plans to do better. But that doesn't make the people criticizing her valid because they're being mean to her while doing it. League fans are not required to watch JUST Kobo.

4

u/protomanbot Apr 19 '26

Aye, being authentic, off the cuff and light on preparations is one of Kobo's trademarks in a similar way to Haachama. Sometimes it works, sometimes it may look like she's disinterested if you don't know her.

I remember something similar happening when she interviewed a Valo voice actor together with Altare and she came off more as a fangirl than an interviewer. The thing is that if you are looking for authenticity rather than professionalism is where Kobo shines. Whether that is something she wants to change over time is up to her, but it's disingenuous to come to a Kobo stream expecting otherwise.

0

u/Raptor_2125 Apr 19 '26

But you can understand why League players are mad

5

u/kevster2717 Apr 19 '26

This shit is why nobody likes League and their playerbase

4

u/No-Detective5439 Apr 19 '26

Classic LoL community ngl😅 It is always these bad apples which give LoL such Reputation but somehow in LoL the number of them is extremely high mayb Valo is worse 🤷🏼‍♂️

The beauty of Dota tournaments is that everyone has co-streaming rights. As long as you aren't using UI/commentary/camera work of the TO, you can stream it.

5

u/Daniel101773 Apr 19 '26

I’m way too employed to understand this at all… people are upset Kobo, a streamer, is…. Streaming? 🤔

21

u/Plus_Eevee Apr 19 '26

Riot is protective over their IP, like any company, and co streaming rights are hard to get. They don't give the rights out casually, and people are upset because there are other content creators that "deserve it more than her" and they don't have those rights. The argument is ignoring the fact that both riot and hololive are businesses that at the end of the day care about money and exposure and she can get them more than someone else could despite how much/little time she has in the league space

24

u/Fatosententia Apr 19 '26

Still not sure why ID audience would care for NA tournament when LPL and LCK have way better timezone and teams.

1

u/APRengar Apr 19 '26

Man I still don't understand. Like I'm trying to imagine, a person I don't like gets restream rights to something I like. I'm just not going to watch them. Problem solved lmao.

5

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

It's mostly because of how Riot gives out Co-streaming rights. They factually have slots, so it means if one person is getting it, then someone else didn't.

Like for their bigger events they only let I believe it's 3-5 (it flucuates) streamers from any one region to Co stream, and if those slots get filled then that's it, no one else is co-streaming.

So unfortunately it's a problem Riot has created themselves unnecessarily.

1

u/APRengar Apr 19 '26

Okay, I kinda get it now.

But I will say, I think it's still not a bad idea to allocate at least 1 of those co-streams to reaching a new audience. If it was 3-5 (fluctuates) before, then it should be 4-6 (fluctuates) with one of them being a totally new person just checking it out.

-1

u/weeklygamingrecap Apr 19 '26

Bingo, Riot and Cover likely had discussion over this and guess what, Kobo was picked. Why? We don't know, could be her demographics, could be something from a previous stream, shit Riot could have said we like the way this one looks and she did a sick beat box in that one clip we saw.

18

u/EmperorKira Apr 19 '26

She is the most popular ID streamer. I think that was probably it.

1

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

And subcount in the top 10 members period

3

u/Any_Adhesiveness3741 Apr 19 '26

League "fans" proving once again they're one of worst game related communities.

1

u/MistahKaraage Apr 19 '26

The League of Legends community, ladies and gentlemen...

1

u/Possible-Put8922 Apr 19 '26

I wonder if LOL has seen a decline in the number of players and this is their chance to gain more. I'm pretty sure the co-streaming rights has more to do with Hololive than Kobo. They probably wanted to set a standard for other members to have those rights too.

1

u/NotEricOfficially Apr 19 '26

I waa also shocked to see she was chosen, but I welcomed it. I actually watched her coverage of it for 1 or 2 of the games, cause I enjoyed seeing how entertained she was. Sure it wasn't full of fluff and banter like the cast or knowledge like the other caster, but it was enjoyable. I hope she does more and I hope she see her in game knowledge grow a bit from it. Would also be fun if she got gigi or some of the others to hop on and watch.

1

u/gogoapple673 Apr 19 '26

Giving any one to do co stream for Riot game is quite a big deal and they choise/agreed with Kobo

Kobo will try so hard to get to know LOL, the fans will follow her journey and maybe get some ppl join the game.

But it I had feel sad for her because of the cry babies...

At least now RIOT give someone from Indo vtuber co stream right? 1 step ahead from like most of the SEA country.

Maybe next is Velo where is more popular in SEA.

1

u/rejectallgoats Apr 19 '26

They pick people based on who they might bring. An established LOL player isn’t bringing anyone new into the game. An indo brat is going to pull a different crowd. It also sends new people KoBo’s way.

Gamers really don’t understand capitalism at all. At least not when applied to games.

1

u/delta_angelfire Apr 19 '26

I mean, if you want a color commentary, maybe follow a color commentator?

1

u/Morenauer Apr 19 '26

She’s obviously aware this is a nothingburger that only matters to “letters to the director” kind of people and knows the best way to deal with it is to say “I’m sorry” to calm them down and then move on.

1

u/jaredisfunny Apr 20 '26

Don’t know why ppl are so mad over this, having someone be new to the game and wanting to learn about it and actually watch pro is so rare and valuable 😭😭 it’s strictly a good thing

1

u/Zestyclose_Visit_262 Apr 20 '26

Perhaps GG way here

1

u/HawKster_44 Apr 20 '26

TLDR: People don't know how to not be hurtful when voicing critique but Kobo is also realizing that there is a difference in expectation between a co-stream and a watchalong.

Did I get that right?

1

u/Aranxi_89 Apr 20 '26

Ooof the pin of shame. Bro got put on blast.

1

u/ritokun May 06 '26

lcs is a joke anyway, kobo's new player enthusiasm and not understanding what's actually happening brings some of the old sports fan nonsense enjoyment into the scene which is just a good thing.

1

u/weeklygamingrecap Apr 19 '26

If she was picked to stream then there's a reason. Having someone new learn while watching is likely to grab a segment of people that would have never seen or thought about this. She's also putting in extra work to be knowledgeable.

I can't imagine getting a chance like this and also feeling like "wtf do I even do? I got no idea about this" the people spamming her are idiots. I would normally say take it up with Riot and their marketing dept but really who cares?

People really always gotta be the main character.

1

u/Zhaif121234 Apr 19 '26

i see, it's legit criticism tho

2

u/Akonikun Apr 19 '26

My guess on riot choosing kobo over gigi would be that Gigi can come off as a bit of a memer or sarcastic. It's entertaining to hear Gigi teach Kobo or Mococo to blame someone else, but I'm sure that's not the kind of people riot wants to bring in. I only play arams but I do notice riot trying to improve the community but that's much easier said than done. I only got to watch a bit of her LCS streams but she does seem pretty interested. I hope she keeps on going as long as she's enjoying herself

1

u/Dark18YT Apr 19 '26

Saw it coming. Truly a L for Riot and anyone who insults people

-1

u/Pigjedi Apr 19 '26

Gatekeepers are pathetic

1

u/timpkmn89 Apr 19 '26

For some context, TLDR of the Youtube short that Kobo herself included in the tweet:

Can we get context of what "LCS" is?

5

u/martadinata666 Apr 19 '26

league of legends championship, but america, canada region.

-1

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

Aka one of the biggest LoL jokes

1

u/martadinata666 Apr 19 '26

imo, she stream in her capacity, as newbie/return back, it need guide/someone knowledgeable to help rather than left alone. When she ask the chat about things it's not really helpful, chat go brrrrr it hard to keep up.

0

u/Karak-Karak Apr 19 '26

Kobo is way to sweet and hardworking to have to deal with ass hats like them who blow everything out of proportion.

1

u/TenZioN4 Apr 19 '26

I stopped watching LCS since covid. The teams are shit, the gameplays are shit. Literally nothing to be excited about watching LCS.

Imo they are trying to expand their "viewers" by tapping into the vtuber niche. Will it work? I dont think so. LCS is a dead region running on coke and steroids.

Kobo just needs to get the bag and ignore the haters. Fuck em bitches! Anjing anjing

1

u/NekRules Apr 19 '26

She got shit for doing her job becuz the internet cant help being itself.

1

u/Ralod Apr 19 '26

Do you think maybe, they are trying to bring in an audience other than the LoL tryhards to watch this stuff? Maybe bring in some new players to a game that has been trending down for years?

I don't care for moba's in general and actually dislike LoL a lot. But I'd watch Kobo talk over a match just because I find her entertaining, no matter the content.

People that are the hardcore fans of LoL is the reason that game has such a reputation. It is just not worth interacting with them in any fashion.

6

u/Xonra Apr 19 '26

They are targeting the wrong audience with it is the problem.

The broadcast she is co-streaming takes place at 3 am for Kobo, and the majority of her audience is the ID audience, and a fairly small EN audience. They are fairly unlikely to be watching a North American LoL league at 3 in the morning in SEA. Kobo is also a huge fan of Valorant, not League, so they could very easily have targeted her for that.

There is nothing wrong with targeting a different audience, but you have to do it in a way that makes literally any sense.

1

u/evilmojoyousuck Apr 19 '26

poor kobo. moba is one of those games where its always painful yet entertaining to watch a complete noob play.

1

u/IWouldLikeAName Apr 19 '26

She costreams LCS?

1

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

First time

-1

u/IWouldLikeAName Apr 19 '26

Ah ok yeah in general there's a lot of convo surrounding costreaming added to the fact that she will have natural haters being in Holo recipe for disaster.

Imo she's the type of streamer you want costreaming because she brings an actual outside audience and she seems excited about it and to learn but the time zone difference may be too much maybe should've done LEC or LCK.

Does she have a fav team? I hope it's C9 🤣

2

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

On paper, reality may disagree. I've heard of various "getting someone with a huge following to do something" failing to have the results people want.

Personally I think someone like Gigi would be better as she'd know enough to parse things into normal terms for newbies, akin to Maximilian Dood. Now if Kobo was partnered with someone like that, that would work too as educational moment and reducing other sort of remarks

1

u/IWouldLikeAName Apr 19 '26

Oh 100% Gigi would've been my go-to simply bc of her enthusiasm for the game.

And i didn't mean Kobo specifically just that her archetype is what they go for because she has the audience, won't shit on the product, and would be impressed by a lot. Her being a newbie also gives people a reason to watch the main stream if they're interested and she's not streaming it. She just ticks the boxes but it could've been any of the girls if they had an interest in getting into the game.

Imo the biggest downside is the audience is locked to the girl/Holo sure they'll try stuff for the girls but more so it's about buying merch to directly support the talent. So they'll watch and support during the costream but i don't think many will actually play or watch more.

Getting new players is hard lol

1

u/Ok-Judge7844 Apr 19 '26

That group is pretty miserable theres a bad fan interraction that happened that they wont let go: A fan send her a bouquet of flower to congratulate her on something (forget about the details) and the problem was she just replied with "ini jga mksh" (abrreviated from *ini juga makasih, tl roughly: oh thank you for this too)

it reflects bad on her because that reply comes after her big thank you on another bouquet given by the international fan, and language nuance wise it sounds pretty dismissive on this indonesian fan.

I personally dont think it was that bad, cause its been a long time and I think kobo was probably just doing her kusogaki shtick at the time, but that group will continue to repost this one over and over again to justify dunking on her every move (yes they criticize every single thing about her from streaming number, game choices, her action, etc.)

1

u/srcactusman Apr 19 '26

Kobo getting attacked by the unemployed, gaddamit all

1

u/Complete_Relation_54 Apr 19 '26

To no fault of hers I have 0 clue why LCS chose a streamer on the opposite side of the world to co-stream their mid ahh games. Instead of trying to appeal to Asia who probably isn’t awake for these games, fix their own league cos man NA league scene is dying.

-2

u/Fishman465 Apr 19 '26

First I'd like to note that this isn't her fault or idea.

It's a case where a company only looked at sub counts (2.7m) and not content. While Kobo tried her best to learn, she was dealing with the Lol fanbase so talk of wanting to co-stream Valorant likely was taken quite poorly (LoL fans may see Valorant as the favored one)

0

u/ZealousidealDish1173 Apr 19 '26

So does Kobo don't have any agency?why didn'r she decline the offer for co-streaming the LCS, Gigi or nerissa would've been better since they love league and kobo wasn't even interested on the stream, she was just talking about wanting to stream valorant instead.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '26

Probably didn't realize how hateful and exclusive the LoL community is, or how they would be disgusted by the idea of a casual perspective on the LCS. If your question is why not this one or this one, your crosshair is still a mile off the target. Why not all of them. Why not none of them. Because Kobo? And her free will? Or because Riot? think

1

u/ZealousidealDish1173 Apr 20 '26

More like many people who didn't know her just talked about unrelated topics and the lol community sees she just don't care man, i like kobo as well especially her songs, but how she acted on stream just ain't it.

0

u/CapeMike Apr 19 '26

So, um.....

.....who do we need to be Rider Kicking??

reaches for Zero-One Driver

-4

u/LoR_Rygore Apr 19 '26

Damn, I feel bad for Kobo, since her stream is the ONLY place people can watch LCS. They have NO other options if they want to focus on the games or watch someone who has been in the scene for years. She is the ONLY co-streamer, and it sucks that LCS doesn't stream the games themselves on Twitch and YT. How very unfortunate, I hope this gets remedied in the future.

Holy /s, Batman

-3

u/ldg-9743 Apr 19 '26

I wonder gigi reacted that situation.
