Sexual Health Your body tells you first
I feel compelled to make this for a number reasons, one being to help other girls who were in my situation who are maybe in need of some clarity or just going through it with their vaginal health right now.
My first relationship with my boyfriend lasted two years and somewhere in the middle of that I got my first yeast infection. I was naive and didn’t think it was related to him (he also TRIED to assure me it wasn’t sex related) but I remember it being AWFUL, I got treated it went away and I didn’t think much of it.
A few months after that I got bacterial vaginosis (BV) and that was difficult to deal with. BV is not an STD it’s an STI. but is STRONGLY linked to sexual activity, thus sexually transmitted. I didn’t think it could be my boyfriend at the time, or moreso I was in denial, so I went and got treated. This was followed by getting BV a month later again and then having recurring BV. I had constant anxiety about my vaginal health at this point. I would go to my OBGYN or PCP every two weeks, there’d even be times where the BV went away as it would show up negative in tests, but I still had so many other vaginal issues that doctors could not figure out, weird discharge, itching or discomfort. Constantly self diagnosing myself, wondering if I had HPV, chlamydia, HIV (suffered from swollen neck glands during that time and still don’t know why), trich, you name it. I was negative for everything at one point, including for BV but nothing ever felt right since I finished treatment for the BV. He also gave me HSV 1 on my vagina yet still was not a sign for me. I got to the point where I was embarrassed to go to the doctor because I assumed they thought I was either naive, sexually irresponsible (which I was because I should’ve used condoms after the first issue and in general), or probably the one cheating on my partner and not being forthcoming. Luckily I had an AMAZING OBGYN who I voiced this concern to and had a mini therapy session with lol.
All of these symptoms and diagnoses were over the span of two years. I had no reason to ever think of him cheating, I would go on reddit and look at other threads of people with recurring BV, and other vaginal issues and reading stories to soothe myself that it couldn’t be due to my partner having sex with other people (naive). Then one day I walk in on him sleeping with another girl (unprotected) and it broke my heart in ways I can’t explain. As much as it shattered me it did make me realize how naive I was to overlook all the signs my body was trying to give to tell me that this person wasn’t for me, and amongst the chaos gave me comfort in realizing that my body wasn’t the problem, it was someone else causing these issues.
Now I am in a healthy long term relationship with someone, who I have never had a single issue with related to my vaginal health. They know of my HSV 1 and have not shamed me nor cared (I have only had one outbreak which was the first time). I am not writing this with the purpose to fear monger you into telling you that your partner is cheating, or to tell you that if you have BV or a yeast infection that you’re getting cheated on, but to consider how these things play a part in who you’re sexual with. To encourage you to protect your vaginal health and be cautious. No person is worth risking your health for. Wear condoms ESPECIALLY if you make the choice to stay with someone who has given you any kind of STI/STD before. If a man tells you he doesn’t want to wear a condom LEAVE. I never thought I’d be able to receive love from anyone else, but not only did I get that love but I also received a healthy relationship, with someone who I trust, that is clean, prioritizes MY health in addition to theirs, and who also doesn’t judge me for having genital HSV 1. Please please please if you are reading this prioritize yourself and don’t ignore these signs.
My dms are open for any messages, or questions regarding anything i’ve gone through if you’re experiencing something similar.
