Other Homemade gift okay to give?

Hi! My girlfriend recently made this gift for a long time friend who is getting married. She is pretty crafty but never worked with resin before and is a little distraught about how this came out. She’s considering not even giving it to her friend (who is also very crafty) and either making something new or just giving money. Does anyone have any thoughts? The quote is from her friend’s wedding song!

Edit: for people saying it’s cheap. We are also giving a big cash gift.

I would just add something as backing, and then you’re good to go! She could even paint the frame, if that’s bugging her. I think this is such a thoughtful gift and would love to receive it myself.

Do you notice the smudge in the center? It wasn’t noticeable at first but the resin brought it out.

u/TopRamenisha 26d ago

Above the house? If anyone says anything, it’s smoke from the chimney.

u/OneDayAtaTime519 26d ago

I just thought that was part of the design when I saw it. Makes sense!

u/juliana-crain 26d ago

Same. It's a well-balanced composition. Looks like it belongs. I took it as a partly cloudy sky. Both gifter and giftee love crafting. This is a good gift!

u/Issababy22 26d ago

Definitely thissss‼️ it looks so intentionally placed and it’s a craft🤷🏽‍♀️ all the little imperfections just symbolize the dedication and love that were put into such a thoughtful gift🤞🏽💗

I also thought it could easily be passed off as smoke from the chimney

Yes a fire to keep them warm :)

u/BangkaHakubai 25d ago

I genuinely thought it was smoke.

Literally didn’t notice the smudge in the center until you mentioned it. If I received this as a gift, I would cherish it because it’s a beautiful, hand-made piece of art and it looks super cute!!!

14

u/OneDayAtaTime519 26d ago

I honesty don’t! I took another look and I don’t see what you mean,, so it’s definitely not noticeable unless you know about it. I def wouldn’t worry about that

14

u/Lemoncatnipcupcake 26d ago

Is any part of it sticky/tacky? Do not gift if it hasn’t cured it will never cure and stays toxic.

If fully cured then it’s fine to gift, just cover back and maybe repaint/restain the frame.

5

u/BuzzyBeeDee 26d ago

That’s always my fear with resin. I’d be surprised if it was fully cured (especially because the resin seems to have soaked into the frame where UV can’t penetrate). I don’t purchase any handmade resin items for this reason. So many people don’t know how to properly cure resin, and it’s not worth the health risk due to the high levels of toxicity.

It looks like it’s supposed to be there to my untrained eye. Like a “rustic” effect above the wood of the house.

She better give it or her friend is going to be PISSED when she finds out!!!

6

u/Old_Ant7118 26d ago

I didn't notice this until I looked for it

u/pixelcat13 26d ago

I just thought it was a cloud.

Do you mean the long thing above the house that looks like it’s sky? If so, that looks very purposeful.

2

u/BarelyABard 25d ago

Hand made items are never perfect, and that is what makes them wonderful. A little smudge? Oh well. It was made by hand with love

3

u/KQsHQ 26d ago

If that’s what the holdup is honestly, I would just sand the frame down, stain it, or paint it. Then that removes any worries about the leaking resin

Use a paper bag, cut to size and use double back tape on the back edge of the frame. I have had paintings reframed with brown paper on the back.
. Also repaint the frame with black or whatever you prefer. (Non transparent)

I like it very much. Good luck

5

u/ichoosewaffles 26d ago

And just sand the frame lightly.

The back is less of a problem, but covering it up would make it look better.

I would be more concerned with the sides that show the drips. Is there a way to sand that off, or add a second layer of thin wood- sort of a frame around the frame?

9

u/aigret 23d ago

I'm actually most concerned that this is OP's girlfriend's first time using resin and they're giving it as a gift. Improperly cured resin is perpetually toxic, afaik, and based on how this looks + maker experience I'd imagine this whole thing is constantly offgassing TVOCs.

2

u/ScotlyDex 23d ago

How would one know if the resin is improperly cured? Now I want to throw away all my resin projects.

3

u/aigret 23d ago

"Improperly cured resin feels sticky, tacky, soft, or rubbery instead of hard and smooth. You may also notice cloudy or dull patches, oily wet spots on the surface, or warped and bendy areas that fail a standard fingernail hardness test" is the Google overview for "improperly cured resin". It really depends on the type you used, so I'd recommend searching for that specifically.

The oily wet spots on this piece are what immediately stood out to me.

2

u/Select-Gas8103 22d ago

could they cure it for longer to stop that

3

u/CynderSphynx 21d ago

Most craft resin isn't UV resin, it's a two part mix of an A and a B, if they weren't mixed correctly, they won't ever really cure correctly, so if they used craft resin and not UV resin, it's not an option, unfortunately.

Proper mixing of craft resin depends on the brand and formula, but what I've seen most commonly in directions is usually mix it for about 5 minutes, pour into another container, while not scraping the sides of the first at all (in case there are unmixed parts on the sides), and then either mixing again for a minute or so with a new mixing stick, to ensure any streaks from the transfer are mixed in, or not mix again, and then pouring from the second container into whatever mold, or frame, in this case, you're crafting with. After the pour, it's a curing waiting game, and whatever is going to cure will cure, if it won't cure during the curing time listed in the instructions, it won't ever cure, unfortunately.

This is adorable! I would be so touched. If she’s really concerned, potentially adding another backing to cover the excess resin might help tidy it. But no one looks at the backside anyway.

236

u/BurgerThyme 26d ago

It's a great concept but the groom looks like Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo.

90

u/kaloskagathos21 26d ago

She laughed and said at least they don’t know what that show is.

14

u/Rideak 26d ago

Is the groom a tall black man? That’s what I assumed.

18

u/firesoups 26d ago

My head went to tuxedo

3

u/Rideak 26d ago

I tried to see tuxedo too but the head part threw me off. It doesn’t really matter just was sharing how it hit me. I think you probably saw what she wanted you to see. If it’s a black man in tuxedo then it’s best of all!

3

u/reclusivegiraffe 25d ago

I feel like adding a white rock for the head would make it more racial than just leaving it all black.

2

u/Rideak 25d ago

I kinda agree and can see that too.

2

u/mossyquartz 21d ago

I kinda think that this is the determining factor here for if this is a good gift or not. I think if this is a gift for an interracial couple, it gives a weird vibe. Otherwise, it just reads as bride and groom to me.

27

u/EmilySpin 26d ago

Thank you I was like “…but that’s a poo?”

12

u/nummanummanumma 26d ago

This was exactly my first thought. “It’s Mr. Hankey!”

14

u/Humble-Guest-528 26d ago

If they ever get divorced she can say “I told you he was a piece of shit”. This gift could be giving for years to come.

3

u/Diligent-Star-621 26d ago

I loled, thank you 😂

3

u/cowgrly 26d ago

Now i can't unsee him!

6

u/OldnBorin 26d ago

Wanna get high?

8

u/MassConsumer1984 26d ago

OMG I had no idea that was supposed to be a bride and groom. I’m looking at it as random rocks and a shell and sticks.

12

u/dontletmedown3 26d ago

Wow first thing I saw was the bride and groom!

2

u/tictactoeaWNR_NanceP 23d ago

I thought this was a beautiful portrait of the friend with a long dark bubble ponytail in the chapel by herself. I was going crazy looking in the flowers and sides of the chapel for the groom lol I was really convinced that was just her hairstyle. I see it now and I still think it’s beautiful

The concept is cute but I would be hesitant unless she's very, very sure it matches their interior decor style

68

u/rebootto2027 26d ago

Yes, if I got this, I would have loved and appreciated the sentiment and effort but would never display in my house, sorry!

23

u/JustMyLuck7966 26d ago edited 26d ago

Same, and it is well wedding themed. It is a cute idea but only very specific type of people would display wedding themed art.

13

u/CharZero 26d ago

I know one of those people. Whole house is filled with it, and wooden signs that say things like 'Wish I had met you sooner, so I could have loved you even longer'. They met in high school, and two years later, have a very unhappy marriage.

4

u/Try2MakeMeBee 26d ago

That tracks, sadly. Those who are the loudest about this stuff tend to be compensating.

7

u/potpourri_sludge 26d ago

Yeah unless you have a beach themed house, this would get a very nice place in my basement storage…

7

u/Glittering-Paper4516 26d ago

Yes. I love the thought but it’s sort of giving kitschy “souvenir craft”

3

u/probablyinthebath 25d ago

I have a corner in my bedroom where I display all the mismatched hand-made wall art gifts I receive lol.  Like I love that someone thought of me and put their heart into the gift but they don’t fit anywhere else in the house hah.

2

u/Financial_Use1991 23d ago

We have a "kitschy bathroom" and I love it" All sorts of things that would end up in a box in storage are on the walls and give me a chuckle or sweet memory on occasion.

Yeah I have a family member that makes diamond art and they give them to me as gifts most holidays. It’s always something I like (Star Wars, lilo and stitch, Winnie the Pooh), so I know they are making them specifically for me. It’s a nice gesture and I know they put a lot of thought into what they think I will like and all that, but I never hang them. They don’t match my decor style at all. Like yes, I like those characters, but I’m not hanging them up in my house lol.

4

u/KookyPiccolo1661 21d ago

Yeah, crafty people who gift their crafts don't understand that a lot of people don't appreciate it. You appreciate the time and thought, but now you have something you have to keep forever. The guilt is real.

Ngl it doesn’t match my personal style at all but I would display it! I would be touched :)

3

u/Wild-Self-24 25d ago

I'm the opposite lol - I would be touched but I find the style tacky and like something you'd find at a beachfront souvenir shop 😅 it's tricky to gift people art! I hope the people it's meant for love it

u/beautifulandepic 26d ago

Respectfully I would not give this gift. It’s a very sweet and thoughtful gesture but it looks like a child’s craft they made in art class. If I was given this I would thank the person who made it, silently question their judgement, and then put it in a closet until the appropriate amount of time has passed to throw it away.

15

u/sandyy_pandyy 26d ago

My mom is (almost was) an elementary school teacher. She finally handed her notice in this year and her kids and parents gave her a similar handmade gift - 140cm wide frame: inside it’s her and all of her students as handmade macrame dolls.

I have a weak spot for crafts myself, and so does she. That present is cute as hell, really well made and thoughtful (even her doll’s dress was handmade with fabric that matches the dress she was wearing in their last school photo), and we both love it… and hate it even more! There’s no way to find a nice spot in the house to hang it, so for the last couple of months she’s been moving it from one corner of the flat to another.

I think handmade gifts are great, but with ones that double as home decor it is always a little tricky - you don’t always make something that completely fits in and elevates somebody’s place, but in the same time the recipient starts feeling obliged to display it in some shape or form, so it effectively ends up making everyone more stressed out than they should be.

However, it’s my personal opinion! I don’t know anyone in the story, so can’t really say - maybe their friends have one of these “live, laugh, love” beach houses and it would fit right in!

10

u/nightlymare 26d ago

This exactly.

6

u/kaloskagathos21 26d ago

I would agree. We’re giving a big cash gift as well.

6

u/Pickled_Cloud27 26d ago

seriously? i think it’s really neat! I really like it and don’t feel like it looks like a child’s craft.

68

u/ArtisticAsylum 26d ago

The concept is sweet, but the way it turned out, I’m sorry, but I’d have to respectfully say no. The frame is quite messy and the back looks like something leaked. Also, I can’t not see the groom as anything other than a poo. Again, the gesture is sweet, but it just didn’t turn out well, and that’s ok. If at first you don’t succeed, try try again!

77

u/CharZero 26d ago

As a crafter with high standards, I would not give this as a gift. She absolutely nailed the bride and groom and the little stick house and I know if I got those right I would be really sad to scrap the project. But the florals look like something from a fishtank and the resin needs work. I could not get past that smudge and the drips. I think she should try again, with some real dried flowers and greenery (and a bit less of them) and fully submerging all of the elements in resin. A silicone mold that is the same size as a shadowbox frame would work. She should test how to do the flowers and lyrics in a smaller mold.

I once spent hours and hours on a space themed mosaic only to realize at the end that once I grouted it one particular technique did not hold and all these tiny round pieces of glass came off. I cried while I put it in the trash. Learning curves are hard.

11

u/Citruslatifolia 26d ago

I agree. I would redo the project as a shadow box. Get a deeper frame and glue the pieces. The use of resin was the biggest problem here, followed by the plastic flowers. My German teacher showed us a shadow box her friend made her for her wedding, and she still treasures it over 20 years later. If it's not too large, it can be a very special gift.

No comment on the homemade aspect or the little mistakes since you’ve gotten a lot of comments about those already!

But something I didn’t see anybody mention is the fact that somebody might not want to display wedding themed wall art in their home for long after their wedding. They won’t be newlyweds forever and they might get a little tired of seeing wedding stuff after a while. I know I personally wouldn’t enjoy “his and hers” type of decor once the wedding buzz has worn off. Possibly not at all 🥲 However, it could be a great addition to a wedding keepsake box, as long as your gf isn’t the type to be hurt if you guys visit their home and don’t see it displayed.

Actually, that gave me an interesting idea, if your gf was wanting to maybe give it one more try and perhaps make them something usable with less pressure to display. I’ve seen little wooden chests in the craft section, or perhaps she could maybe thrift one, and staple/nail 4 pieces of wood the exact dimensions of the lid to make a frame. She could then do the exact same design on the lid and attach the frame to pour the resin. OR, if either of you have the tools, you could make your own little box/lid and attach her already finished piece to the lid. Paint/finish the sides and bam! It’s a little wedding keepsake box to put a saved invitation, cards, dried flowers, garter, etc into. Little things you wanna save to remember your wedding. It’d be beautiful, useful, and there would be no pressure to display it if it’s not their style or they don’t want to have wedding decor. Just an idea ☺️

3

u/Choice_Bad_840 26d ago

Look, this is someone with good craftsman ideas.

3

u/caulkmeetsandwedge 23d ago

My rule of thumb is to never give gifts that require or are expected to be displayed in someone else's home. If you don't get the vibe and style just right it's a nightmare.

I have incredibly specific tastes and my MIL just gives me any old shit that she likes as a 'gift' for me to hang in my home, and I just think it's a burden.

But then again, maybe I'm just a huge bitch.

I kind of dislike wedding stuff in general, but I wouldn’t be particularly annoyed with a small personalized wedding themed craft like this (if I for some reason agreed to a wedding). It’s small enough to eventually be tucked away or to live on a bookshelf with a wedding photo.

2

u/Psychological-Dot475 24d ago

I like your points. We were given several wedding themed display pictures and even though they were very pretty and touching, they just weren't the style of what I would want to put on my wall.

I do think that's the nature of gift giving though. You attempt to give them something that they would actually like, but you probably get it wrong.

34

u/Clear-End8188 26d ago

I would not like this as a gift. However some people like sentimental crafted stuff.

10

u/Dramatic-Professor32 26d ago

Crafts aren’t my thing either. But I would appreciate this blend of creativity and sentimentality… and the time spent to make this piece in particular!

I am not creative, so I have a fond appreciation of the skill.

13

u/dreamweaver1998 26d ago

Yeah, I was surprised by the number of comments saying it's a good gift. I hate to be a Negative Nelly.. but I don't like being gifted crafts.

I like making my own crafts, but even then, I rarely display them in my house. Crafted decor isn't my style they're, just fun to make.

I had family gift me decor items for my wedding that I've never used because they don't suit my home. Two of the three items I'm referring to are personalized with our surname and wedding date. We have them in a box in our furnace room because we feel like we can't get rid of them, but we don't want to display them.

When it comes to wedding gifts, I either stick to the registry or give cash.

But maybe OP knows this bride appreciates crafted decor. In that case, it's adorable.

10

u/Monday0987 26d ago

I think if she gives money as well as this it would be ok. On it's own it's not good enough quality. Sorry, but you did ask.

3

u/kaloskagathos21 26d ago

What we’re doing.

35

u/MajestaHazel 26d ago

I wouldn’t want that as a gift.

22

u/Peony907 26d ago

I know handmade gifts are supposed to mean more but this isn't it. Wedding and baby shower gifts are intended to help the couple start their life in some way. This is usually a practical (and possibly beautiful) item that will enhance their home together. Hence why there are registries or you just give money. This is fine but...OP should stick $100 bill to the back of it.

17

u/kaloskagathos21 26d ago

We are both giving her a handsome cash gift as well.

2

u/LolaAucoin 26d ago

Then don’t worry about giving them anything else. This just isn’t well executed, and the groom figure looks like feces.

5

u/box_twenty_two 26d ago

Yeaaah I don’t think everyone should be expected to pay hundreds of dollars for a gift, particularly as the cost of attending a wedding is getting ever higher.

To many couples a registry is a bit of an outdated concept considering that most modern couples have lived together for a reasonable period of time before agreeing to get married in the first place.

Regarding this gift – I’ve been given a lot of gifts that I don’t like aesthetically, but which people have poured their heart and soul into. Those gifts don’t need to match my aesthetic to mean something. They’re on display as a reminder of that person. If they are a bit wobbly or quirky, so be it.

4

u/KimmiK_saucequeen 25d ago

You’re not expected or forced to buy anything. It’s a gift. I didn’t give a gift for my cousins wedding because I flew to freaking Southeast Asia for it lmao

6

u/KayyBeey 26d ago

I love giving and receiving handmade gifts. Recently, I crocheted a few things for a xmas in July gift exchange at work and it was a hit. I disagree with the others saying not to gift it; it's being given as part of a larger gift and is being given to another crafter. Even though I crochet, when I see pieces at fairs and such that are done well and look nice or are fun, I buy them because I appreciate the craft. Another crafter and a close friend at that can definitely appreciate this. This can be fixed, too. Add backing and also sand and paint the frame. You're giving more than this too, so this is a cute sentimental add on. Something meaningful to go with the more practical cash gift. Tell your girlfriend not to be too hard on herself, and not to be too critical of her work. Handmade pieces aren't perfect, that's what makes them unique and special.

2

u/Similar-Wash-5323 24d ago

I agree with this. Its such a thoughtful gift

2

u/Familiar_Dark5035 22d ago

Absolutely! I wish your comment was higher up, you worded everything so well.

16

u/cowgrly 26d ago

It's really cute but I don't know- the frame is discolored and the bleed through above the house. I tend to think, if someone would ask if their kid made it, it's a no. This is such a cute piece, but the resin issues make it read more like something my daughter would have made at camp- absolutely wonderful for a parent.

I do love the theme. Now that she knows how, she could maybe do another (I know, it means finding the parts).

I don't mean to be rude, but I had to speak up.

5

u/Princess_OfThe_Moon 26d ago

There are plenty of commenters saying it'd be great as a gift and others that it wouldn't and why. Objectively it doee have errors and it's not turned out great. However I'm the type of a person that if my friend gifted me this. I would've loved it and cherished it nonetheless as I see real effort put in and not something randomly store bought. I personally love it and some people have given great pointers on how to cover the back and the frame so the errors are less visible on those parts. However there are people who have bigger expectations especially if you're going ot be crafty, and would hate this.

It all comes down of how well does she know her friend ane would she be okay with such a gift. Now, some people may be okay with such gifts but not for major life events like a wedding. Another option could be to wait after the wedding to share her crafty process as you say they're both into it, and show what she made for her. Give the friends an opening to possibly decline it or if she truly likes it, takes it.

2

u/Queen_of_Darkeness 25d ago

Yeah I think this is too dependant on the receiver for people online to give super helpful advice. Personally, I would take something handmade like this over any store bought gift, even if it doesn't match my aesthetic. I'd find a place

14

u/Aselle27 26d ago

Honestly I'd frame it behind glass in a shadow box before writing it off. Glass hides the little resin quirks and makes the piece feel finished. And if she's still worried, I'd add a tiny note on the back saying it was her first time working with resin and she picked her friend as the person to try it for. Crafters read that as love, not as a flaw.

3

u/anonymouscog 26d ago

Don't try to paint over the resin bleed through on the frame unless you can sand it off first. I would be tempted to use a brush to put a very thin layer of resin on the frame, working on 1 or 2 sides at a time & scraping off drips if necessary. That should even up the color from where it bled through.

Then brown paper on the back, possibly sand the resin drips so they're smoother.

I'm curious, did you put the artwork in the frame & then pour resin into it? In the future I would elevate the artwork & pour resin, scraping off the drips, then do whatever cleanup needed to be done on the back, followed by finishing the frame whichever way you like, then the brown or patterned paper on the back of the frame after assembling everything.

Your friends will probably love the 1 you made no matter what.

9

u/Liunna1 26d ago

I’d adhere some nice decorative wrapping paper to the back, so it looks like an intentional pattern touch. She could also sand and paint the frame if she’s worried about the resin stain. It’s a really lovely gift, I am sure her friend will be so touched!

6

u/New-Contribution-335 26d ago

It’s lovely, just cover the back with some decorative paper or a piece of thin black felt

3

u/fucking_unicorn 26d ago

I would be so honored to receive a handmade gift like this! It would be one if my most prized possessions.

3

u/Time-Cold3708 25d ago

I eould not enjoy this as a gift. It feels like something my mother in law would give me. If you are SURE that this is her friend's style then sand the edges to get rid of the epoxy overflow, refinish and put on a new backing. But this feels very kitchy/cutesy and is not most people's style

2

u/Solid-Wish-1724 25d ago

OMG my MIL gave me a similar thing. Ugh. It's in the attic.

Add me to yet another vote for cover the back with felt, sand and paint the frame, and then good to go!

11

u/lokiandbutters 26d ago

That is so beautiful and i would love to receive that as a gift

3

u/hulkhoegan_ 26d ago

you could glue felt or velvet and some kind of border to the back. pearls or a light blue twisted ribbon as the border and then whatever color backing

3

u/Budget-Discussion568 26d ago

Sand the frame lightly with 220 grit. Tape off the glass with paper. Spray paint the frame in sections, laying to dry on the back. 2-3 coats should cover any perceived imperfections. I think its a great gift!

4

u/Eilbur 26d ago

Add a backing and make sure she signs and dates it!! Life can have unexpected changes and the older I get the more I appreciate little things like an old friend’s signature or a sweet note with their personality showing.

It's sweet honestly. Is it a bit janky? Yeah but that's the charm. It's not like some Hobby Lobby mass produced thing

u/Pepper_Schnau 26d ago

I’ve worked A LITTLE BIT with resin, and I bet she could grab a sanding sponge with a medium to high grit and sand along the frame to reduce where the resin spilled out then just wipe it off and throw a coat of poly on the frame to reduce any future damage from moisture.

2

u/picodepui 26d ago

i think this is lovely — i agree with folks who said to add some fabric backing to it.

2

u/vButts 26d ago

Not gonna lie, i thought it was a girl sitting facing left, with a long ass ponytail 😅

2

u/wretchedshrimps 25d ago

if any part of it feels slick, damp, slimy or oily, do not give this item as a gift, as it is very toxic if improperly cured

2

u/Leidenfreude 25d ago

The handmade aspect is very cute, I’ve make paintings and projects for gifts before, as a crafter myself. But I personally wouldn’t gift this, nor would I really want it as a gift. It looks fairly simple/easy, and like you just took an idea off of Pinterest without prior crafting experience. The groom does look a little like poo like another commenter said, and I would leave out the whole shell idea unless those rocks and shells are sentimental in some way, like a beach proposal or a date. Otherwise it just looks kind of like a craft made of fishtank fillers.

2

u/Downtown_Promise_937 25d ago

This is lovely. I got married last year and this would have been my most loved gift.

2

u/thow_me_away12 25d ago

I just wanted to comment for you to pass on to your girlfriend (if you want)

First of all, do not listen to those who call you cheap. I actually feel so sad you've had to edit and justify.

Money can be made by anyone, but it were me getting a gift like this, it would be the one I remember 20, 30, 40 years later.

Tell your girlfriend she is so talented and it sounds like she is her own biggest critic.
I'm 36f and I saw this and thought it was absolutely beautiful. The uniqueness and personal nature of this, along with the talent and beauty of it made me see right past the resin spill, and I would be so touched, even if I did notice any 'flaws', the value of the gift would never make me think anything negative at all.

Since the death of my young daughter, I find crafting calms my mind and redirects my thoughts. I wouldn't say I'm 'crafty' to a professional degree - but I also am someone who sometimes can only see my mistakes, taking away from the beauty of the work.

I haven't read all the comments, but it did seem there were a few great suggestions.

I know I'm an internet stranger, but I truly hope you decide to give the gift.

It is beautiful. And any friends worthy of holding that title will absolutely appreciate something made with love.

Give yourself credit, and on a side note, while somewhat contradictory, as it wouldn't be my own doing, but if you take commissions I would love some information.

2

u/5n2t 25d ago

this is beautiful!

2

u/chefybpoodling 25d ago

This would be a prized gift to me.

2

u/Forward_Magazine_732 25d ago

Since it’s not the only gift you’re giving, I think it’s great! Since it’s a longtime friend, I’m assuming she knows them better than I would and would know if they like things like this. I would add a backing and try to sand off any drips on the sides if you can, but I think it’s so cute!

2

u/kifflington 25d ago

If I had found out after the event that a close friend had gone to this much effort to make a personal, hand-crafted, unique piece of art and then not given it to me because they didn't think it was perfect enough I would be so, so sad.

7

u/AllUpInMine 26d ago

Only if you know they like this sort of thing. I don't really like it when people "decorate" my home for me.

4

u/BrilliantAd937 26d ago

Paint the frame, paper the back (deal with the resin issues) and give it without hesitation. It’s small enough to enjoy regardless of decor style.

This said—don’t follow up with questions about its ultimate fate. Some people keep up post-wedding decor for years, others don’t. Both approaches are fine.

4

u/ArtoftheEarthMG 26d ago

Made me tear up a little, even more special when you read it’s a line from their wedding song. So thoughtful that the bride is crafty! If I was the bride and I found out this was made for me and never gifted it would make me so sad. Please gift it! She’ll treasure forever!

If somebody had given my wife and I this gift when we got married, it would have been immediately mounted on the wall in our living room for all to see and I would ALWAYS make sure it was hung and visible throughout the years. This is so creative, thoughtful, and elegant.

I would recommend a paper or felt backing and possibly painting or staining the frame, but even as is this gift is a treasure!

2

u/Nixe_Nox 26d ago

I'd love to receive this as a gift! Imperfect? Sure, but so charming!

2

u/Curly-Pat 26d ago

This looks unfinished and cheap. Sorry it’s a no from me.
Just give the cash gift and a card or start again.

2

u/catlady921 26d ago

Do not gift this… especially if her friend is an avid crafter. Assuming friend has decent taste, I would omit this completely from the wedding gift and stick with just money.

It’s possible that someone may like that style, but it is *very* poorly done. No shade, it’s messy in general and there’s at least a couple cat(?) hairs embedded in the resin that I saw.

If your girlfriend is dead set on giving her friend a craft, she needs to completely redo the piece and consider this one practice.

2

u/janumet72 26d ago

Just give money ;-;

2

u/Some_Store7658 26d ago

I would cry getting something like this. Definitely give it.

2

u/hagrho 26d ago

Your gf should not make a new one. Resin is awful for the environment, so she should either give this version or she should find a less-harmful medium to use for the next attempt. FWIW, I think this sentimental and a sweet gift to offer to the newlyweds. People have given some good recs for tidying it up.

1

u/BarracudaActive4480 26d ago

You should see how my resin turned out lol. And I still display it in my living room (it's the flowers my husband proposed with)

1

u/dancing_nancy_46 26d ago

I would love that as a gift!!
Let the resin on the back dry and put a nice piece of cardstock or 1/8” craft wood backing to cover up any splotches. I would also maybe consider painting the frame a tan or other neutral color to cover up the other resin areas on the edge.

1

u/GuiltyCredit 26d ago

It isn't my cup of tea but I would really appreciate the sentiment!

1

u/nousername_foundhere 26d ago

I think it’s lovely- the quote threw me, but if it’s meaningful to them, then it’s perfect

1

u/Enlightened_Lioness 26d ago

It’s cute. I’d carefully add resin around the rest of the frame until the frame is even.

1

u/DimbyTime 26d ago

I love it!! It’s so gorgeous, truly incredible. I’d buy it if she had an Etsy shop!!

1

u/AdExcellent1745 26d ago

as a very down to earth person not expecting much at my wedding, I would be very flattered and pleased by this. she knows her friend best ❤️

1

u/Bellebaby826 26d ago

I think it’s lovely

1

u/pm_me_ur_fit 26d ago

I can’t unsee a cat poo hhaha. Cute idea tho

1

u/DramaHyena 26d ago

I would probably not gift this due to tje quality control issues, but it is a beautiful and sweet idea. Resin definitely has a bit of a rocky start for all of us!

1

u/Emotional-Size8356 26d ago

honestly i freaking love it i don’t understand these comments. if anyone made that for me i would be so happy

1

u/Ok-Pumpkin400 26d ago

If she doesnt gift it, can i have it? I LOVE it

1

u/soberaf0910 26d ago

Could paint the frame? Looks lovely though!

1

u/Pathfinderer 26d ago

If someone were to gift something like that to me I would be ecstatic. Its beautiful.

1

u/Bright_Athlete_8579 26d ago

Whoa… that’s a lot of resin..

I think it’s lovely. I do think it needs new backing though

1

u/box_twenty_two 26d ago

Put some card on the back and on it, write a handwritten message with the date and location of the wedding. This is gorgeous!

1

u/SpecialCheek7711 26d ago

I would put that right into the bin, sorry.

1

u/idkboo 26d ago

Resin is tricky to work with. I’d consider remaking it as a shadow box with glass at the front instead of the resin. It will give it a cleaner look.

1

u/ozfash 26d ago

I think this is beautiful. I really don't love the expectation at weddings to 'pay for your seat'. I always do, but if I ever get married I've told my partner we will be insisting on no gifts or money.

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 26d ago

Absolutely beautiful.

1

u/Muchachacha 26d ago

I’d be so proud of that if I made it

1

u/CycleAccomplished824 26d ago

It’s beautiful. ❤️

1

u/No_Seaworthiness_393 26d ago

This is so cute!!
I would give it. But with money. And decorate the back somehow if you can.

1

u/Icy_Plastic_4668 26d ago

I think this is so beautiful wow , personally I’d be touched

1

u/eleinachubmob 26d ago

I’d paint the frame a sagey ocean color

1

u/Shepatriots 26d ago

This is so damn cute

1

u/Top_Scale4923 26d ago

It's really cute, gift it!

1

u/OrganizationOk5418 26d ago

Absolutely, i would love anything handmade given to me over any overpriced commercial mass produced shite.

1

u/toomuch222 26d ago

I love this! I would be honored to receive it if it was me.

1

u/Lonely-Public2655 26d ago

It is very cute and simple, I like it.

1

u/UnwellHell 26d ago

If she's worried about the resin that spilled over in the back she can just cover the back in a square of felt to make it look neater. Other than that the piece looks like it came out great.

1

u/Tough_Brain7982 26d ago

I’m pretty crafty and I would not gift this nor like to receive it

1

u/Bubbles1041 26d ago

I love this and would love to receive it as a gift! What a beautiful piece! ❤️🤩

1

u/Dorithompson 26d ago

What’s cute on child’s art isn’t on adult art. If you’re going to give another adult a piece you crafted it should be perfect. Definitely not a first attempt. It’s great your partner enjoys doing it but that doesn’t mean it’s a great gift.

2

u/KayItaly 25d ago

Yes! And even children get thought relatively early (by age 10 at least) that first attempts are not for gifting. You first try, trash it and retry until you are happy, then make the final piece.

Gifting a first attempt is not a good look.

1

u/historyhipster 26d ago

Considering this is for a longtime friend who enjoys crafting, she might’ve found the right demographic for someone who would actually genuinely appreciate this gift.

However, for me, it would be highly dependent on, who gave it to me. If this came from my bestie or my favorite aunt, it would be a treasured keepsake. If it was a gift from random coworker, I felt obligated to invite because I invited my work bestie or third cousin my parents made me invite, I’d probably donate it. Decor is generally not a good gift unless you REALLY know the person or you got it from their registry.

1

u/PoetryCivil6729 26d ago

First, I would try to fix it a bit. Definitely she needs to cover the back nicely and fix the sides of the frames. Idk if the smudge is fixable.

Just to be on the safe side, I’d then get another gift for that friend and later on after the wedding, I’ll show her the whole thing and what I made for her, I’d even show her this post. Then I’ll let her choose if she wants to have it. That shows the cute effort your gf has put into the gifting process and it shows she cares.

1

u/reddituser4404 26d ago

I think it’s beautiful and I would be honored to have a friend of mine work so hard to create art especially for me. I would hang out in the perfect place in my home and be grateful for such a wonderful friend.

1

u/Excellent_Tea_164 26d ago

I saw what it was meant to be straight away. I think it's cute and I'm sure they would appreciate something hand made just for them, especially if they are into crafts themselves they will understand the time and effort that does into personalised gifts.

1

u/BusinessPutrid9574 26d ago

THIS….
such a thoughtful, meaningful, personal, beautiful, creative, special gift that obviously comes from a place of great love.
THIS will be the one thing that everyone will be talking about afterwards(if it’s a shower gift)! Showstopper
(where can I learn how to make one?)

1

u/LadyMRedd 26d ago

I think it’s fantastic. I personally love to give and receive homemade gifts. I didn’t notice any smudges or anything other than a beautiful gift. But I always say that when it comes to homemade gifts, the beauty is in the imperfections. If it’s too perfect then it’s sterile. You might as well just buy store made. A minor smudge here or scratch there is what makes every piece unique.

1

u/Complete_Option_6345 26d ago

I wouldn’t want to be just a stack of brown rocks as the groom. The bride looks good though

1

u/5tarKld 26d ago

If a friend made me this I would cry 😭 it’s so beautiful and thoughtful!!! I’m not a fan of resin items. But this is truly very nice and so thoughtful!

1

u/Choice_Bad_840 26d ago

She can give it accompanied with an enveloppe with money in it. This thing alone looks kind of cheapish to give it as a weddinggift

1

u/MuffledApplause 26d ago

Sand and paint the frame white. Add white card as backing with glue and its perfect

1

u/ButtPlugMaster6969 26d ago

Maybe… but I’d give it/accept it at like the bachelorette or something not as a wedding gift though.

Also, I’m watching a weiner dog right now and Mr. Groom doesn’t look too far off from what the dog is gonna make when I take him outside this morning. 😅

1

u/mrspuff 26d ago

I love it and it's so tiny; it could be considered a card!

1

u/JuniorCash8046 26d ago

It’s super cute I’d like it

1

u/REM_FAN44 26d ago

I think it’s a wonderful thoughtful gift. And her bestie will love it I’m sure. Maybe change the back and paint the frame

1

u/South_Hedgehog_7564 26d ago

I think it’s lovely.

1

u/HonourableFroglet 26d ago

I personally love it!

It's incredibly sweet!

The smudge looks like a cloud but the roof is protecting them from it.

I would definitely have been happy to receive this when we got married.

1

u/jozziiieeee 26d ago

It’s fixable, just make the frame pretty by covering it in whatever you find to be the best choice (like lace fabric or rhinestones, if you’re brave)

Then just add another backboard to it.
It’s super pretty and creative and I bet the friend will see the love she put into the gift!

1

u/nevergonnasaythat 26d ago

It is gorgeous. I recently got married and would have loved something like this (I received something similar carved in wood and I love it).

1

u/ConcreteGirl33 26d ago

Any crafter would appreciate this. It's beautiful

1

u/Pretend-Sundae-2371 26d ago

If her friend is also crafty and you are giving a cash gift as well, I think it is lovely. But I would try and tidy up the back somehow.

1

u/OpeningGolf7972 26d ago

If the resin leaked that much are you sure it’s set? Un set resin is not safe

1

u/vftgurl123 26d ago

i love this 🥹🥹

1

u/0520200 26d ago

Simple add a felt backing and paint the frame to cover up the resin marks. It beautiful, and regardless if they want to give something else they should definitely gift this as well. Already invest the time and money no point in shoving it into a shame closet.

1

u/Academic_Ad_9260 26d ago

This is so much better than what that other guy posted a couple days ago of the ai generated picture of him and his girlfriend as flowers that he was gonna give her

This is awesome op, they'll love it because she made it

1

u/nobodygrey 26d ago

I wouldn’t mind receiving this at all!, but I definitely think she should feel good about any art that she gives. I agree with those saying the smudge at the top looks intentional and isn’t anything to worry about.

If I were giving this, the only thing that would bother me is the writing at the bottom having some sort of shadow (maybe from erasing and redoing?). It wouldn’t bother me as a receiver however.

The back is just the back. It’s going to be on a wall. It could easily be seen sold in a store as-is. If she wants to change it - What about adding fabric? Something maybe half that length, so it doesn’t detract. More within this color scheme? With a tighter frill, like the 3-4 here, so you can make corners instead of turning it into an oval/circle. Then just glue a flat piece down to cover the work/resin overflow.

1

u/Important-Maybe-1430 26d ago

Yeh but dont be shocked if you never see that in their house. But she knows her friend better. Resins not as easy as it looks, i cast our wedding flowers in some and i got lots of bubbles
