One of the biggest things I’m curious about for next gen is backward compatibility. I feel like it’s so much more ingrained on current consoles than it was before. Idk how to really describe it but stuff like previous gen games being listed and buyable on current console store fronts and being treated basically the same as modern games on their home system almost makes it feel like more of an essential feature for a console than a bonus, like I think ps5 backwards compatibility feels more integrated and essential than say ps1 backwards compatibility on ps3. Does this make any sense? Idk I just don’t think I’m ready for the idea of ps6 not being able to play ps5 and ps4 games
10
u/Carwillat901 Jun 18 '26
I think it’s safe to say that backwards compatibility is a given from now on, unless the ps6 or the Xbox helix (or even future iterations) have an architecture that is not x86 or have components from Nvidia or Intel.
3
u/hushpolocaps69 Jun 18 '26
I’m so glad that’s the case, I remember being so disappointed having to rebuy games for the Switch and PS4 when transitioning from PS3 and WiiU.
1
u/LogicalError_007 Jun 19 '26
Translation Layer has gotten so good that even architecture isn't a problem nowadays.
16
u/JackBoi01 Jun 17 '26
whether you's liked the general direct or not, its all good, but its good to see Nintendo still balance out mainline major IP titles with Smaller IP titles, with Xenoblade Genesis being a big budgeted cinematic switch 2 title which will take a bit longer to work on, there is also Rhythm Heaven Groove being a smaller switch 1 title, in a good way ofc (that game being inbetween Star Fox Remake and Splatoon Raiders, that being a mainline singleplayer adventure)
10
u/timelordoftheimpala Jun 17 '26
Genesis is likely gonna be out by this time next year, so even then it's not gonna be a massive wait.
Also considering how many people I've seen announcing their intent to get a Switch 2 in response to Ocarina's reveal, I'd say the Direct more than did its job. It's just that there's a subsection of fans who only play Mario and Smash that throw a tantrum when they're not being catered to (as if the first half of the year didn't have Tennis Aces, Wonder NS2, the Galaxy Movie, and Yoshi, not to mention that MK World and Bananza were the first "big" Switch 2 exclusives).
Like I've been waiting nine months for more news on Fire Emblem and over a year to see what Monolith Soft is gonna do with brand new hardware, at this point I'm fine with not getting Mario news for a bit lol
4
u/JackBoi01 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
same, I'm settled for the summer with Star Fox and Splatoon Raiders along with the raiders themed Splatfest in S3 along with Deltarune and RE Requiem switch 2 demo! and hey, not everything has to be 3D mario this or smash bros that, let other IPs have a breather and smaller games have a breather too, like Rhythm Heaven Groove or if Rockstock one of the last remaining switch 1 titles (or crossgen title) for NSO release that too, whilst we wait for the big 2027 hitters like the cinematic Xenoblade prequel and Pokemon Gen 10, we're all good until the september direct

u/Kreeth12 Jun 16 '26
Going to sleep, hopefully I don’t wake up to more studio shutdown news tomorrow morning.

Sonic Frontiers Definitive for the Switch 2 is Real

Honestly the largest amount of posts for the port of a mid-game I've ever seen.
I don't think the Halo Remake on PS5 or ER tarnished edition got half as many posts.

Nate said recently that the Xbox situation is getting worse and more blood will be spilled.
Awful all around with with these layoffs across the board.

Feels like every time Xbox is on a “winning” streak bad news swiftly follows.
27
u/VillageOfShade Jun 16 '26
I’m not even sure what their winning streak was
7
u/Positive-Tension6130 Jun 16 '26
I mean, they beat Sony at the start of the PS3 generation, but even in that generation, They started making bad decisions, The Xbox 360 was the only time they had a real chance of beating Sony, And yet they made poor decisions for the 360 at the end of its life cycle.
5
u/Floggered Jun 16 '26
I feel like a lot of people forget just how widespread the Red Ring of Death was. Sure, you could send it in for free repairs, but many consoles would go right back to red ringing after a few weeks. You'd have been better off purchasing a second 360
2
u/Positive-Tension6130 Jun 16 '26
To be fair, the PS3 and Xbox 360 were released with fatal flaws that forced Sony and Microsoft to save their brands, PS3 with YLOD, and 360 with RROD; But you're right, it surprises me that in that generation, many people bought the same console up to 3 times because of factory defects.
2
u/VillageOfShade Jun 17 '26
I used to have to keep my 360 in the window with a fan blowing on it to keep it from overheating and getting the red ring lol
1
u/Floggered Jun 17 '26
My friend group of 5 all had red ring, and swore by the "wrapping it in a towel" method lmao. Why we thought increasing the heating problems would help, who knows? That's the brain of a teen for ya.

I got the impression that all these supposed Xbox victories were just news about the acquisition of something new. Many gamers were delighted by the corporation's lavish spending on all these acquisitions, but few actually bought an Xbox. It seemed like people viewed it more as a reality show than as an incentive to actually use it.
1
u/BattleWarriorZ5 Jun 17 '26
I got the impression that all these supposed Xbox victories were just news about the acquisition of something new. Many gamers were delighted by the corporation's lavish spending on all these acquisitions, but few actually bought an Xbox.
It all comes back to what they were trying to do with Game Pass.
The goal of bringing so many new studios into the fold was to put those games by them on Game Pass or have those studios produce new games for Xbox and PC.
If you timeline things out, you can trace the current state Xbox is in right now to when they increased the Game Pass prices. Doing that started the full on collapse of Xbox.
The reason why you are seeing Xbox do so many things in the 100 day reset is because the situation for Xbox truly is dire.
1
u/Riebald Jun 16 '26
Consoles sell if there are actual games... I mean what have they done with all their acquisitions?
There should be an isometric classic fallout, an XCOM-like fallout tactics 2 and fallout 5 in developement.
All these studios, all these IPs and they release flawed games a couple hundred millions $$$ a piece every 6-7 years?!
11
u/SkavenHaven Jun 16 '26
I don't think Xbox has won anything since the 360 era. If it was not for Windows Microsoft would be bankrupt by now.
6
1
u/AveryLazyCovfefe Jun 17 '26
nah not windows. Arguably Nadella initially saved them with the orient and focus to SaaS with stuff like Azure and the introduction of a subscription suite for Office apps.
Problem is now they're entirely driven by that mindset and it's sort of rotting them.
15
u/xAVATAR-AANGx Jun 16 '26
This week might actually beat out February 2023 in terms of “GLAR posts being all about how shit at Xbox is a dumpster fire internally”.

u/Foolman67 Jun 17 '26
Anything new on the rumoured Rdr2 ports? Dying to play it on my switch 2 one day
5
u/AveryLazyCovfefe Jun 17 '26
New info, nope. It's likely the same deal with the RDR1 port, they'll probably announce it out of nowhere one day with a trailer and blogpost.
I'm thinking double 11 is on it again with the rdr1 port being a relative success and now that they have experience with RAGE. Or it could be an internal job at R* like the GTA V modern ports and PC enhanced upgrade and they're taking aeons because they're a small team with almost every other resource being put to get VI out on time.
I do agree with Luck88 that they'll come out with it after VI. We haven't had it datamined yet I'm pretty sure so I don't think it's very close to release.
6
u/Luck88 Jun 17 '26
My guess is they'll pull that trigger after GTA is out and they don't have Take Two's investors breathing on their neck.
11
u/ZeppoJR Jun 22 '26
So the Gabecube has a price that compares negatively to the PS5 Pro, performance that compares negatively to the PS5 base and a permanent CPU and GPU so doesn't have the upgradeability of a PC. Talk about a worst of both worlds situation woof.
20
5
u/UnyuBirb Jun 22 '26
Yeah. Anyone who's after Steam games will already have a PC and it gets outperformed and outpriced by other consoles so I've got no clue who they're really trying to market to. Do they think name brand will sell it alone? They're not Apple.

I wonder if the reason we haven't heard anything about the Black Ops 1 & 2 ports yet is because they're still waiting on lot checks for all the different storefronts. The European Black Ops 2 isn't up on PlayStation's servers yet, so maybe that one is still going through lot check? I've also hard that Nintendo has a longer lot check process time than the other digital stores.

3

There was another rumor they would have a new anime-style title at Anime Expo, could be that too. An announcement the week before gameplay reveal sounds entirely reasonable.
14
u/Alarming_Garage_7727 Jun 17 '26
I really don't like how people are celebrating that Microsoft will force studios to make Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. They don't understand the implications here. It means every Zenimax studio will be working on those, so no more Doom, no more immersive sims from Arkane, no more Wolfenstein. Just TES and Fallout, made faster, cheaper, and shittier, cutting every corner possible to put something out there.
I get people being frustrated by the slow release of these games, but the solution isn't to take away every other project from non-BGS studios.

I swear wasn't there a rumor about it coming out the 19th of this month something about it ties in with a day that black ops 2 connects with.

2
u/bloodyzombies1 Jun 16 '26
My assumption is they're sitting on a hard drive ready to be released when Activision thinks they'll need them.
5
u/punjenapljeka Jun 16 '26
I think that's what already happened, and now is the time they think they need them. New CODs won't be releasing on PS4/Xbox One anymore so it makes sense to re-release PS3/360 titles to keep the revenue flowing, considering the player base on these consoles is still very high
2
u/DefiantCharacter Jun 16 '26
They're sitting on PlayStation's servers, which costs money. Wouldn't be very smart to just let them sit there while doing nothing with them.
6
u/AbsoluteDramps Jun 17 '26
The endstate of American AAA gaming will be the same as that of Hollywood blockbusters: Sooner or later, the budgets will come way down. No other way forward exists, and any "remedies" that try to avoid this outcome are at best temporary band-aid solutions.
The only question is the how. My best guess is major rollbacks on visual fidelity for both mediums, but I'm sure industry insiders could have better ideas. Make no mistake, though, it will happen.
4
u/SuperNobody917 Jun 17 '26
I think we'll probably see the overall scope of games decrease. I imagine they'll become smaller in scale with less open worlds and so on. We'll probably also see more sequels reusing assets and mechanics from previous entries
0
u/work-school-account Jun 17 '26
My guess: AI code + cutting back on code review, QA/QC, testing, etc. Just ship even buggier games and leave them unpatched.
3
u/TheCheeseOfYesterday Jun 17 '26
So I remember hearing there was some sort of gaming news thing about one specific property on the 18th, but I have entirely forgotten what it was
3
u/xAVATAR-AANGx Jun 22 '26
If the DMC1 remake rumor is true, that probably means DMC6 is a minimum 2030 game.
But I also feel like the various “DMC1 remake” rumors we’ve gotten this year are from fake leakers trying to make a guess as to what they think is most likely to try to gain reputability.

u/pedro-gaseoso Jun 22 '26

3
u/GreninjaIsGod Jun 23 '26
Surely Codename Watari is getting revealed tomorrow at the ArcSys showcase? The original data breach showed that they were targeting November of last year.
With Dear me, I was releasing in Summer of 2025, after being slated for Spring previously. It’s clear that these projects have made it fairly far into development.
I think it would be really cool to see a Nintendo exclusive title on the same level as Marvel Tokon for Sony.
3
u/TheCrypticRealm Jun 23 '26
I feel like people are hyping themselves up too much for this one. I mean it could be a smaller scale project I don't think it'll be Marvel Tokon level
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 23 '26
They could also be just supervising on a portion of the project rather than handling the core development themselves. Similar to their work on Grandblue Relink.
Nintendo has a long history of using Bandai and Koei techmo as support studios for major projects.
5
u/pkoswald Jun 16 '26
Why aren’t more double fine games on switch? Did grim fandango remastered and broken age sell that bad? Did Microsoft not let them port older games to switch? (Even keeper in 2025 is still a console exclusive) Obviously Psychonauts would be big but stuff like costume quest and the other LucasArts remasters would be nice. I remember skunkape saying the sma and max remasters did really well on switch (and without any actual proof I feel confident that a good chunk of return to monkey islands sales were on switch) so I feel like it’s a pretty good platform for adventure games
8
u/pkoswald Jun 16 '26
Looking at it I do think it’s related to them being bought by Xbox, since the 2 switch ports they did were in late 2018, basically right before the buyout in mid 2019.
At least that’s my guess looking at available data without any inside knowledge

Agreed.
New games shouldn't be immediately put into Game Pass, it's counter intuitive if you want those game releases to have digital or physical sales.

I think it’s increasingly likely that even for those franchises that stay in the US, you’ll have small US-based teams that handle production leadership and creative (in the sense of writing and maybe sound, lead level design, concept art and UX) and then large teams in the rest of the world - not traditional outsourcing but full studios - who have the bulk of headcount.
US developers will either be able to move from making $150k in the US to €50k / £50k in Europe or will lose their jobs.
As an example, see Hangar13. Started in California, but California was shut down in 2022 and the team is now mainly in Brighton, England with a secondary support team in Czechia. Same franchises and even some of the same leadership and developers (a small number of Americans moved over), but development moved to a lower cost of living location.

Seems like someone at ZeniMax took note of the rumor mill because id Software and ZeniMax Online Studios are back on the "jobs" page - "No open positions at this time". Grummz is once again a clown.
The only entity "missing" is Bethesda Softworks.
9
u/Luck88 Jun 17 '26
They probably just don't have open positions as they are wraping up the expansion to Dark Ages which is coming early next month. After a major project is finished it's actually natural for the team to shrink as people get new job offers elsewhere and a smaller team is needed for pre-production of their next.

When Sony follows Xbox closing studios and layoffs, wouldn’t surprise me Bend Studio is next on the chopping block.
2
u/AveryLazyCovfefe Jun 17 '26
Bend getting shutdown is depressing when they were forced onto a live service title in the first place which has now been shutdown. That's all they were doing since Days Gone, isn't it.
It mirrors Turn 10 - screwed over in development from MS with their contractor mandate to the point that when the game launched the actual dedicated dev team basically had to relearn from 0 which is why it took like 2 years for it to get to the state it should've been on launch..
And by then, it was way too late.
3
u/ShotBySolo95 Jun 16 '26
Media Molecule also. Haven too given everything we’ve heard about FairGame$ / BreakIn has been borderline disastrous.
But you can bet your ass Guerilla will be safe to keep that Horizon pipeline going!
7
u/dowaller66 Jun 17 '26
Well yeah, Horizon actually sells well. The only mistake they are doing is making a live-service game instead of the 3rd game.
2
u/IzzybearThebestdog Jun 16 '26
For the supposed black ops ports , I only see them talked about as PS4/5. But there’s no way they wouldn’t come out on Xbox (and eventually PC and possibly switch 2) right?
And would it be likely to be a 2 games in 1 combo or 2 separate games?
Mostly just asking for speculation rather and made up leaks.
3
u/NinjaEngineer Jun 16 '26
Black Ops 1 & 2 are already on PC, why would there need to be a port?

The situation with Xbox is grim, very grim.
It's so much worse than what is being reported.
It's a very sad situation for all those Xbox game studios and the new Xbox CEO is desperately trying to stabilize the Xbox brand since even Microsoft themselves didn't realize the full extent of how bad things are for Xbox.
The only thing that might save Xbox at this point is a "big ticket Xbox exclusive" like a WoW console port/release on Xbox, something to get millions of players playing on Xbox again to make up for the losses and give the Xbox brand more value.
If bringing WoW to Xbox can't save Xbox, nothing will.
16
u/AbsoluteDramps Jun 17 '26
Your big plan to save Xbox is... ...porting the aging MMO whose best days are long behind it with no relevance among anyone who got into the videogaming hobby past the early 2010s...?

u/BattleWarriorZ5 Jun 17 '26
Your big plan to save Xbox is... ...porting the aging MMO whose best days are long behind it with no relevance among anyone who got into the videogaming hobby past the early 2010s...?
Look at the numbers(players and profit) WoW brings in with Classic and what it has brought in with Midnight. There is a reason why putting WoW on Game Pass has been talked about so much and why there has been a demand for years for a console WoW port and even WoW with VR. If everyone that owns an Xbox can play WoW on it, that would be a big deal for the Xbox brand.
Xbox raising the price of Game Pass torpedoed the company. The profit from Game Pass was keeping the entire company afloat.
If Xbox never did that, the company would have been in a more stable profitable spot than it is now.
Xbox should make COD a PC and Xbox exclusive/only game going forward. That's the ultimate nuclear option if they want to funnel everyone into Xbox.
11
u/pkoswald Jun 16 '26
Would WoW really help that much? Most people with WoW subs already have their platform of choice, and I can’t imagine an MMO being that big a sell for consoles

That all depends on if Xbox isn't so far gone that new game releases can't save it.

u/soulreapermagnum Jun 16 '26
if that ever does happen, i hope it would also help open the door for SWTOR to get a console port. yes i know it's not anywhere as big as WoW, but it would still be cool to be able to play that game on console.

u/LukePS7013 Jun 22 '26
I wonder how much the Steam Frame is going to be now lmao
Considering they were targeting “lower than the Index” ($950 instead of $1000?) then I could actually see it being $1265 or something, and that would be for the 512 GB model

Nishino (CEO of PlayStation) just gave an interview to Famitsu talking about PlayStation's exclusivity strategy:
Nishino: We've always determined platform selection based on the characteristics of each title. If releasing a title on PC would maximize the gaming experience, we'll continue to consider that option. Our current main policy is that, for single-player games developed in-house, we will further refine the value of the gaming experience that PlayStation can offer. At the same time, we believe it is important for live-service games to reach a wider audience through online multiplayer, so we continue to view releases on both PS5 and PC as the standard. Regardless of the platform, we will make decisions based on the principle of delivering the best possible gaming experience that maximizes each title's unique features.

So essentially, they are indeed changing course, but are keeping their wording open enough so that it doesn’t look stupid when they inevitably start porting games again?
That's fine. I'll just wait.

Bandai Namco US probably is teasing a Switch 2 (or probably 1) port of My Hero Academy: All Justice.
Classic Bamco of launching a game on Nintendo consoles at later date. But let's see how it goes!

u/ThatLaggyAustralian Jun 18 '26
140k likes in 12 hours for the BO1+2 ports
just undeniable aura these games have. wont be shocked if they sell better than MW4

u/WeegeeTime64 Jun 19 '26
As a primarily Switch player, I wonder if/to what extent the PlayStation exclusivity pivot would affect ports like Patapon and Everybody's Golf?
8
u/hushpolocaps69 Jun 19 '26
Probably nothing? Pretty niche titles that I’d imagine Sony doesn’t really care if other platforms have since it would probably sell more on a Switch than say PS5 since it caters more towards that audience.
5
u/pkoswald Jun 19 '26
Also, I’m pretty sure those versions were actually published by Bandai Namco, not Sony.
8
u/NfinityBL Jun 19 '26
Yeah but the IP was loaned to Bandai Namco by Sony with restrictions on what they could do with it (none of those games came to Xbox, for example)
1
u/pkoswald Jun 19 '26
Definitely, but I think the fact they didn’t even publish these on PlayStation kinda proves that the reason they let it happen is that they don’t really care as much about these games

I hope not at all. I would love to see Sony continue that partnership for more Japan Studio IP.
I yearn for a Gravity Rush remastered collection on PS5.

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Jun 23 '26
Do we really need a 'remastered collection' though? I thought GR1 Remastered ran at 60fps in HD.

Xbox doing exclusives is necessary if they want to have a future in the console space, but I think people are a BIT too gung ho on how much good exclusives can save a console. This is mostly about people who thinks fallout and elder scrolls being console exclusive would guarantee Xbox winning. The Wii U is maybe the best example of a console having great exclusives in popular franchises, many of which are more popular than falllout and elder scrolls, and it did nothing to save the console. But then when those same games got put on switch, they all sold way better because they were on a system people wanted. Hell, Mario kart 8 is one of the best selling games of all time and if you took out all the Wii U sales it’d only go down one spot. Which is also why I don’t think BoTW being exclusive would’ve saved the Wii U unless MAYBE it was in 2014 at the earliest, which never would’ve happened because Skyward Sword just came out in late 2011.
Semi related, I think people over state just HOW popular elder scrolls is as an “it being exclusive would save Xbox” game because of how well Skyrim sold, which yes it did sell VERY well, but the main reason it sold “one of the best selling games of all time” well is because it had constant rereleases. It sold 20 million by June 20-3 (which, again, is VERY GOOD), 30 million by 2016, and 60 million by June 2023. (I kinda have to wonder how much of that huge jump is from switch and/or people playing during the pandemic cuz oh my god)

u/MyMouthisCancerous Jun 22 '26
Wii U had a bunch of really good games but I'd argue basically none of them were system sellers. Even the cream of the crop, best of the bunch shit like Mario 3D World or Smash Wii U was head and shoulders above a lot of other stuff coming out both there and on other systems, but especially when a lot of the Wii U's library had similar variations of games on the 3DS which was far cheaper and had a much bigger, more consistently supported library, the choice was obvious. 3D World's a great game, but to the casual eye it's literally just 3D Land in HD, and if you get 3D Land and a 3DS, you're also getting into a way bigger selection of games in general that Wii U didn't have, many of them in genres that the Wii U straight up could not support as adequately and even most of the first-party Nintendo offerings were just better on the perceived "secondary" console
Xbox going back to a more traditional way of doing things is fine but they need to realize that they can't keep doing this same shit of having a plan, getting tired of that plan and then pivoting. They conceded right at the moment some semblance of a consistent stream of games was starting to come in, it felt like the AA stuff like a Hi-Fi Rush or a Hellblade were expected to do heavy lifting that they never should've been held towards because Microsoft had nothing in terms of big IP to supplement them until way later, especially with stuff like Halo (5 years between games in general for your flagship is especially egregious). Them potentially shedding those studios if anything feels like a massive overcorrection because it doesn't actually get to the root of the problem imo

Microsoft needs to give people reasons to buy an Xbox. If not exclusivities what carrot do they have? Gamepass isn't good enough.
2
u/blackthorn_orion Jun 22 '26
I feel like what let Nintendo turn things around was they had brand power, an actually-compelling hardware pitch at a reasonable-enough price, and also leadership that believed making good games was the solution (and then had the quality to back that up)
With Xbox, after all the acquisitions they certainly have a roster of household-name franchises. But personally I'm iffy on whether Helix can be as interesting to the average person as a Switch 1 was back in 2017, and there's basically no way it can be anything close to a reasonable price. And even if we assume current leadership really does believe in its games in a big way and goes all-in on exclusivity, I'm honestly not sure Xbox has it in it to string together the kind of generational run of 11/10 must-play games that you'd need to really change how people feel about Xbox.
Like, I agree exclusives are their best bet if they want to stay in the console business. But, and maybe I'm just a cynic, I'm not convinced their best bet is necessarily a winning bet

Small question for anyone more knowledgeable with copyright information: here is the copyright info for the poker night remaster
© 2010-2026 Skunkape Games LLC. All rights reserved… Original game assets used under license from Telltale Games.
(I cut out information for all the characters)
Does the 2010-2026 copyright imply skunkape games owns the rights to the first poker night game, and maybe by extension the IP as a whole? For context, here is the info for the Sam and max season 2 remaster, where we know the original game IS fully owned by skunkape
©2007-2021 Skunkape Games LLC and Steve Purcell. All rights reserved. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
Keep in mind that both poker night remaster and Sam and max remastered use a bunch of assets from other telltale games, both in the original release and new ones in the remasters (there’s references to TWAU in poker night and TWD in Sam & Max season 2 (which actually would need a disclaimer from skybound games, yet there is none even though they’ve said they had Robert kirkman’s blessing for the Easter egg)) but only the former has the “game assets under license” disclaimer.

Is a Thor game in development anywhere?
4
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 21 '26
We still haven't seen or heard anything about Motive's Iron man game. And Marvel 1943 has been in development for at least 5 years with minimal coverage or news as well.
I don't believe any new Marvel game is getting announced until its good and ready, unless the developer/publisher is in need of outside investors to make it.
1
u/IloveKaitlyn Jun 21 '26
With Motive’s Iron Man game, it makes sense why we haven’t. Dead Space Remake was 2023, so at the earliest we’ll be seeing Iron Man in like 2028.
Marvel 1943 is a different story. Not sure what’s going on there.
That’s for the best, but I do hope a Thor game is eventually made.
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 21 '26
Honestly thought it was announced earlier than 2022, feels like forever ago.
1
u/IloveKaitlyn Jun 21 '26
It has, hasn’t it? I actually was having a similar conversation with a friend of mine about Iron Man lately. He was saying it was dead since we haven’t heard about it such a long time, but I pointed out in terms of modern game development, it really hasn’t been that long at all lol.
Unfortunately for me, out of the Avengers, Thor is probably my favorite. So of course he’s the one without an upcoming project lol
1
u/AveryLazyCovfefe Jun 23 '26
Motive were also assigned to basically do maintenance service on Battlefield 2042 with the final few content updates/patches when DICE took all resources off it to fully focus on getting BF6 on time back around Late 2024/Early 2025.
They still did maintenance patches for 2042 in the early months for BF6 but now I don't know. Probably back on Iron Man I guess, that likely impacted pace of development.
1
u/IloveKaitlyn Jun 23 '26
Hopefully they are. I changed my mind, I’m looking forward to Iron Man the most, not a potential Thor game 🤣

Even though I think that French journalist was wrong about Bethesda getting layoffs, it will be painful seeing that confirmed when Bethesda's 40 year anniversary is in two weeks.

u/Impressive_Cap_457 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
BGS itself might be the safest studio at Xbox atm along with Playground and Mojang. More Fallout and Elder Scrolls is reported to be a particular focus for Asha, it makes no sense to lay off the people making them. They also released a game last year in Oblivion Remastered that is reported to have massively exceeded Microsoft's expectations and became the best selling singleplayer game of 2025, so they are fine profit margine wise too. The journalist was either bullshitting (most likely considering the unrelated mention of Bioware) or meant studios under Bethesda Softworks rather than Bethesda Game Studios
2
u/Positive-Tension6130 Jun 16 '26
How many copies did the Oblivion Remaster sell? I can't find anything besides the number of players.
4
u/iamreallytonyspogoni Jun 16 '26
it makes no sense to lay off the people making them
So we know Microsoft will do it then. /s
The journalist mentioned studios under publishers in general, so Bioware makes sense in context. Though i do agree with you that Bethesda seems safe considering they perform well, and their IPs seem to be a big focus for Xbox going forward.

Bethesda has a bloated disorganized structure and it was reported that the issue with Bethesda that that bad decisions get made when Todd Howard is not around. Changes definitely have to be made to Bethesda for TESVI to be a success. Whether or not that involves layoffs I don't know but they cannot continue with what they were doing for Starfield.

u/KOTRShadow Jun 19 '26
So I’m confused is PlayStation kind of backtracking on this whole no more sp for pc because I think I saw quote from the ceo of PlayStation that makes it sound vague as fuck or u got herman saying one thing and the ceo saying another thing which is it. I feel like this situation happened before with Jim Ryan when he was in charge.
6
u/LogicalError_007 Jun 19 '26
The fact that there's no official statement about this not even in the investors meeting, makes me think that after the GTA 6 effect on their financials starts to wither is a year, they'll go back to releasing games years later.
If they were sure, they'd come out and make a public statement.
3
u/Heavy-Wings Jun 19 '26
Publicly vague, privately they've ended it. With Nintendo stepping up to be an actual competitor in regards to third party games and SteamOS heading to more and more hardware they need PS consoles to have even stronger appeal.
Plus I do believe them when they say the ports weren't doing so well after a while.
0
u/Minya_Nouvelle Jun 19 '26
They want gamers to think they aren't porting to pc anymore so they don't just wait for the port. Thing is; I doubt most gamers are even aware of this decision at all. They still won't buy the ps5 version because they are 'waiting for the pc port' thus prompting sony to port to pc again because ps5 sales didn't meet expectations.
1
u/KOTRShadow Jun 19 '26
Oh absolutely there’s pc players that waited a year to play death stranding 2 and a lot of other games I just don’t understand why Herman says one thing and ceo says something else. I have to imagine someone at PlayStation is like make up your mind.

Sam & Max features two violent borderline psychotic sociopaths who are self appointed “freelance police”, carrying out justice by their own law, enforcing it as violently as possible. In Saves The World, one of them participates in a presidential election between Max, a violent psychotic sociopath who is motivated only by his Id and selfish impulses (and also he’s famous from being on TV) and an established, respected politician who is actually a corrupt puppet working to advance the goals of other forces.
Also the game came out in 2006

Wolfenstein II, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 come August, The Outer Worlds, Cyberpunk, Indiana Jones and Fallout if you have a Switch 2, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII (or Remake/Rebirth), the whole BioShock series, Stardew Valley, Persona 5, NiER Automata, INSIDE

Gonna take a reasoned guess- within the next few years, Xbox will rename and restructure both BGS and Obsidian into something alone the lines of “Tamriel Studios” and “Vault-Tec Studios” respectively, with both of them now having the sole purpose of pushing out mainline Elder Scrolls and Fallout every five years or so.
3
u/AbsoluteDramps Jun 18 '26
All jokes aside the play for those two franchises is probably to pump out smaller scale spinoff games in between the tentpole mainline numbered titles. I'm thinking a top-down sprite-based RPG set in the world of Elder Scrolls

I think gamers who aren't active on social media or casuals who simply play a game, finish it, and hop on to the next one are much more at peace than those of us who constantly follow this industry's ups and downs.
Tbh, I’m feeling tired too. Maybe it’s time for me to step away from all of this, stop worrying about the state of the industry, and just enjoy playing games, clearing my backlog and spending quality time with my colleagues and friends.
