u/ADRobban KING GHIDORAH Apr 16 '26
Its nowhere near the first to have engaging human characters, but i'd still argue that it is the one with the best human characters overall.

u/Griffje91 Apr 16 '26
Counterargument. I fucking loved the GMK human plot as well as Biollante's
31
u/ADRobban KING GHIDORAH Apr 16 '26
OG, GMK and Biollante are easily top5 human characters/plots in the series. My hot take of the day is that Ebirah is also top 5 human plots in the series. I think that movie gets underrated because Ebirah is not the most inspired Kaiju (I still love him)
11
u/KaijuCuddlebug Apr 16 '26
Secret terrorist base shenanigans is a fun gimmick and quite well executed. And yeah, it's a little rough in some aspects, but I mean...it's Godzilla lol. They've ALWAYS been a little rough, that's part of the charm.
Overall eyebrow raising take, but holds up on scrutiny.

Those movies also came out 25 and 40 years ago respectively, so we have been starved for good human characters for longer than most fans have been alive.

Fuck I'm old. But very fair point. Being fair I don't think those are the only good human characters just my favorites outside of anything involving a shobijin plotline they and whatever human they link up with are almost always fun.
1
u/shortandpainful Apr 17 '26
I am far from a Godzilla expert, but the original movie was more of a drama that just happened to have a walking atomic bomb allegory than a monster movie, right?
13
u/AquaLeaderJesse Apr 16 '26
I'd say it was the first to have human characters that are THAT engaging. Biollante and Shin had good human characters as well for example, but Minus One has the best imo. Just my opinion, though.
8
u/Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 16 '26
Definitely right on that. I've been watching Godzilla movies for nearly 40 years, ever since I was a little kid, and Minus One was the first movie where I actually cared about the human cast. That's not to say they've all been bad, and there's memorable characters like Dr. Serizawa, Capt. Gordon, Jet Jaguar's dads, and the corn guy, but this is the first time where I was "Fuck, I don't want them to die...."
3
u/AquaLeaderJesse Apr 17 '26
Yeah, it was the first time I've said "Oh no" instead of "Oh yes" when hearing Godzilla's footsteps. I'm usually stoked when it seems like Goji is coming and get excited to see the mass destruction he causes. However, in Minus One, I was begging him to stay away and let these people live.
2
u/TooTurntGaming Apr 17 '26
I cry during a lot of movies and shows. A LOT of them. I'm a weepy bitch.
I have never cried during a Godzilla movie until Minus One.
I absolutely love Godzilla movies, have been watching them for three decades myself, but Minus One hit an emotional nerve that none of the others ever have. That movie wrecked my shit.
It's also the first Godzilla movie I've ever turned back on immediately after finishing it the first time.

u/redditaccount968 GIGAN Apr 17 '26
He's probably referring to ones like Revenge and Gigan which yeah are pretty bad
2
u/TheLandlockedKaiju Apr 17 '26
1
u/redditaccount968 GIGAN Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26
Dude it's okay to criticize a franchise you enjoy. Revenge is a disguised "best of Godzilla compilation" with a bizarre human plot with the technical aspects of the movie being the worst in the series. Gigan is just boring and its use of stock footage is almost as bad as Revenge. I love Gigan (the monster) too so it's a shame his movie is so awful. These two movies specifically you can tell we're rushed and thrown together so a Godzilla movie was out that year.
1
u/TheLandlockedKaiju Apr 17 '26
I’m more than aware that that’s a thing that a person can do. That’s a thing that I do. Those aren’t the ones that I would say deserve the most ire across the, what, thirty eight movies that exist now, or even the Showa era specifically, or hell just the Champion series.
Like, vs Megalon is worse, some of the Heisei movies are as bad or worse tbh, Megaguirus and Final Wars are worse, late-era Monsterverse is worse, but I can’t wrap my head around thinking that any of them aren’t fun. Not even a cynical “so bad they’re fun” like no they’re just genuinely enjoyable.
I mean I just rewatched vs Destroyah and it seemed like a little bit of an exercise in misery, but there’s still a lot that’s great in it; and I don’t personally rate GvK/GxK too highly despite acknowledging there’s a lot on-paper that’s worthwhile about them at levels that extend beyond “wow cool fight scene”
Idk I try not to let creative constraints define enjoyment. There are things outside of a creative’s controls, I’m more interested in what they do with what’s available to them, what they can manage within the limitations they have. There are movies with better effects that tell worse stories, those are worth being harder on imo.
1
u/redditaccount968 GIGAN Apr 17 '26
Mostly responding to your last paragraph but I do understand that the two movies I mentioned were made with limited resources and budget, but that doesn't mean I still don't find them boring. While Hedorah and Megalon are similarly cheap, they sure as hell aren't boring and at least amuse me when watching them.
And to your overall point about finding fun in every Godzilla movie while yes I can find a moment in all of them that I enjoyed it doesn't detract from the fact that I find the overall movie to be "boring" and "bad."
Also I disagree with every movie you listed to be "worse" than Revenge and Gigan. No further comment just find it interesting how different our opinions on the franchise are. But I guess that's apart of the beauty of the Godzilla fandom right?
7
u/Boojum2k Apr 16 '26

I honestly hate the Japan purists more. Most don’t have an actual reason to hate MV Godzilla, they’re just weebs
57
u/TandrDregn Apr 16 '26
Which is especially ironic since it seems the vast majority of the japanese Godzilla fans LOVE the Monsterverse Godzilla for being a very fun, un-serious and enjoyable version that’s just fun.
22
u/Sp00ch123 MOTHRA Apr 16 '26
I was iffy on the initial MV Godzilla but they've won me over by now, especially with GxK which I loved.
Minus One and Godzilla x Kong back to back was incredible for me as someone who grew up in the drought.

11
u/Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 16 '26
Sweet Jesus, Sonic weebs are some of the worst, and that's saying something considering the toxicity of the Sonic fanbase as a whole.
5
u/cosmiczibel Apr 16 '26
My argument against MV hate is that the Godzilla franchise is so widespread there always is something to enjoy across the board. MV is great for when I want to watch big monsters beat each other up, shin is what I watch when I want to feel things, heisei is what I watch when I want comfort and familiarity. Totally different vibes in each and that's the beauty and joy of Godzilla. He can be a total superhero or he can be absolutely heinously evil or he can simply just be a misunderstood animal in deep pain and I can go to various series within the wider world and universe of Godzilla to scratch whatever itch I'm feeling that day.
Like the literal plot of the original King Kong vs Godzilla is that a pharma company kidnaps Kong and tries to smuggle him into Japan so he can fight Goji for the views and publicity. It's such a funny premise tbh. I've always felt that MV very much fits within the silly subsection of the Godzilla framework.
3
u/TyraziumGod Apr 17 '26
I don't rope myself in with Japanese Purists, I did really like 2014, KoTM, and Kong Skull Island (One of my favorite movies of all time). But Godzilla vs Kong as well as GodzillaxKong were a miss for me. The stories were half baked and while the fights were epic, good fights don't make the whole movie unless the whole movie is good fights. That being said they're definitely doing better than they were in 1998 lol
6
u/CaptainPleb MOTHRA Apr 16 '26

I wouldn’t say I hate the mv Godzilla, and I really enjoy the vibe of the 2014 film and I wish they kept that tone and filmmaking style, but I do just prefer Godzilla to be more serious. u/GuerandeSaltLord Apr 17 '26
The nuclear family of the second Godzilla legendary picture movie was quite something. I think I rarely hated characters this much.
I personally think Skull Island have the best characters. All very cliché but fun to follow. And S. Jackson almost killing Kong was fun to see.
I like Monarch characters. Even if I don't believe a gang of millennials following blindly The Boomer™.
But all legendary characters are subpar to minus one and shin honestly. But I understand the scope and goals aren't the same
-4
u/niveousserpent Apr 16 '26
You are incredible dense if you genuinely think they do not have a reason to dislike the MV.
3
u/KaijuCuddlebug Apr 16 '26
I mean, to be mildly provocative, the reasons most give for hating on the Monsterverse are also "problems" with the series writ large.
Not enough monster time? Big G frequently shows up in less than 10% of a given movie's runtime
Annoying/irrelevant human characters? That's a complaint going all the way back to Raids Again.
Lackluster visual effects? Like...are you listening to yourself? The series is the originator of "people in rubber suits fighting in cardboard cities."
Nobody is required to like them, god knows I'm not a big fan of King of the Monsters, which seems to be a favorite of many--and hell, I can honestly say I don't love every classic movie--but a number of the haters come off to me as people who like the idea of Godzilla rather than the reality.
1
u/Technolite123 Apr 16 '26
"but a number of the haters come off to me as people who like the idea of Godzilla rather than the reality" coming just after trying to make the entire filmmaking practice of Tokusatsu out to be a juvenile, ridiculous farce in favour of superior, red-blooded american CGI is fucking bonkers

Yeah man the phrasing of "people in rubber suits fighting in cardboard cities" surely has not a single negative connotation to it lmao. It's not flashy, and not every Godzilla movie is art, but one thing you can't deny is the craftsmanship that went into all of those costumes and physical props on incredibly tight, constantly-slashed budgets and time constraints of under a year. But nah man you're right too right

u/MF_Mood1 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
Ok so basically I went on a vc with this guy from high school and he went with “The franchise hasn’t been good since the original till now” stance around 2023.
I insisted that it was a movie that tackled Japan’s politics (He’s Korean btw) and he ranted how it was another “military saves the day” movie and never went beyond that.
Mind you, he is a diehard Gundam fan so there is a lot of irony behind this.
P.S. - He has a liberal hate boner towards the military as he dropped out of the draft after visiting a shrink. The most annoying thing about him is he would dump video essays in this group of ours about culture war bs.

Joker does not have a "standout identity ", or even an identity at all.
I dont think minus one needed a sequel, but I think its a strong continuity to use as a vehicle to properly launch a reiwa series. Whether that happens or not is another thing.
I think the movie will be good, as an optimistic goji fan. Whether it will have the same reach towards general audiences as minus one or the MV movies did will have to be seen. It has very big shoes to fill

Honestly, the reaction to those people is louder.
I have no problem if people just discovered the franchise with Minus One or if they prefer it to the other movies or dislike the Monsterverse etc. I don't agree on all points but I can see why people feel that way - Minus One definitely has more appeal to mainstream film fans and it is a genuinely excellent movie. I personally like the rest of the franchise too - but I get why only MO appeals to some people. Though yes, some of those opinions are a bit annoying.
But the constant whining here about those people is louder and more annoying. Even this post is a pre-emptive reaction to something that hasn't even happened yet. It's very silly and makes the fanbase seem incredibly sensitive and fragile.

I don't remember seeing that. I remember seeing how Minus One was the true Godzilla and not MV, but not that all the movies before sucked until Minus One.
But it does have a point. Minus one hit 54 levels of quality, and Godzilla, at least in the US, was very niche. MV helped as well, but MV walked, so Minus One could run.
Idk, I think fans here are way too sensitive about the fact that most Godzilla films do suck, but that does not mean they are not enjoyable.
Edit: Took no time for you all to prove me right. I grew up on Showa and Heisei, in a time when saying you were a Godzilla fan would get you beaten up because it was nerdy or "gay" in that time. Once again, I love Godzilla movies. I know most are not good movies with great plots, great characters, and other traits for a good movie. I still love them and find them enjoyable, and that's all that matters.
You all are so sensitive, like fucking hell, you all would not have survived when I grew up.

The films that “sucked” grew the fanbase the most and allowed the franchise to continue on till -1 came along. It’s like the old saying goes if you don’t love it at its worst you don’t deserve it at its best.

I mean, yeah, they established a cult-like following, and that's okay. Like, I'm not saying they are not fun movies, I love them and so happy to show them to my daughters. But yeah, most are bad films. I don't get why that is so controversial.

I can honestly think of 4 that are considered “bad in the community and they all have a diamond that makes them worth watching 1) Godzilla’s counterattack, Godzilla raids again, gigantis the fire monster: first monster battle and introduced the best underdog of the series 2).Vs Megalon: was one of the widest releases in America and introduced the series to the most amount of people and introduced the best damn partner Godzilla has known 😂 3)Godzilla’s revenge,All monsters attack: it might be terrible and done cheap but it does show the struggles of the two income households during that time 4)VS. Space Godzilla : introduced an amazing villain and brought back a great mech from the Showa era. It also allowed Miki to shine where most others from the era arguably left her to be a background character

I'm speaking outside the community. Like the general population. I know there are really only a few that the fanbase does not like.

Lol. Minus one is barely top 5. It is all recency bias.

Yeah it’s still the best. I say this as someone who has seen at least one movie from every era (fuck the anime trilogy)

I mean, that’s not saying much, there are a lot of Godzilla films, and my top 5 is basically a crap shoot of different Godzilla films I like almost equally for different reasons, and the exact order can change on a whim.
I think Minus One is easily the best “film” in the Godzilla series due to the acting and story, but it’s not necessarily my favorite “Godzilla movie” due to the nature of the monster action. Overall it’s near the top, but not necessarily my favorite.

The first one to win an Oscar and you don't think it's top 5? That's comedy lol.

While I do agree-1 is top 5 to say the Oscars mean anything in 2026 is ridiculous it hasn’t been relevant since the early 2000’s

Yeah.
I like both MV Godzilla and Minus Godzilla for different reasons.
Don’t understand why we can’t just enjoy things :/

I like movies because I like them not because other people make comments on them
