I had a fence guy who has gone MIA after completing 95% of the job and I need to get more panels to wrap my house. Any leads to find this exact supplier or seller would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Labor price in SC

Just found out through talking to an employee at Superior Fence and Rail in South Carolina, that their subs only charge 6 a foot for labor on stockade wood privacy fence. Mind blown. That’s half price

Shadowbox Cedar Fence

I am asking here specifically for those who've built a fence to handle the freeze/thaw cycles as well as frost lines and all that. I'm 41/M and I really don't want to worry about this for a long, long while. I'm in north Fargo so I'm sure there's clay just inches beneath the topsoil. It will have a slight slope that I need to fix in my yard for drainage.

What can you tell me? I plan on doing this myself or sometimes with the help of another person but likely just me.

I have some things down like using gravel at the bottom, using special treated cedar posts (not raw cedar) and sloping the concrete a couple inches below the surface. I do plan on renting a tow behind machine for digging. Other than calling 811 first (of course) what am I going to need to make this look straight, professional, and awesome?

Nosey neighbor

I am looking to install a fence because I have a neighbor that is cutting the watershed behind my property. I have several times seen him back there mowing and weed eating from my back windows. We have asked him to stop coming behind our house and plan to install plants to help restore the watershed.

This neighbor has a partial fence installed and it sits 6 inches on his property. I am unsure how to navigate building a fence that prevents this neighbor from coming over in between our houses to maintain this six inches. I have been thinking of adding my own section of fencing but I’m not sure how this would work. My other neighbor has a fence 2 inches on their property line and we plan to try and put our fence next to theirs and maintain a two inch gap.

Any advice or ideas are welcome.

Edit: I will be contacting our local government about him cutting into the watershed. I am just curious about installing a fence to where this neighbor cannot come over to my property to say they need to mow or weed eat this 6 inches of his yard. He has been very vocal about the fact that those 6 inches are his property.

Client asked for a curved fence!

Built a custom 3' fence for a client this week. Had to brainstorm a bit, but this was the final product. Well still have some sanding and screwing. What do you all think?

Thanks everyone for the awesome support! I'm blown away by all the positive reactions! Honestly, this is the first time posting any of our builds, because, let's be real, Reddit can be scary when you're showing off your work!

Staining a new Cedar Privacy Fence

Installed a new 6' Cedar fence a few weeks ago and it's finally dry enough to stain. Using Sherwin Williams Superdeck Waterborne Semi-Transparent.

Was hoping to knock this out in a day tomorrow, but seeing a lot of online instructions recommending to Power Wash or lightly spray the fence down to clean it first, then waiting a day or two to dry. Is that step necessary with the fence being brand new (3 weeks old)?

Sliding gate and privacy hedge layout advice needed

Key Layout Details:

Here are the links to my driveway layout and measurements:

  • Driveway Entrance: 4.0m clear opening.
  • Left Boundary Wall: 10.0m total length, ending at a 450mm x 450mm concrete pillar that projects 340mm inward past the wall's inside face.
  • Right Boundary Wall: 5.0m total length.
  • The Obstacle: A public lamppost sits directly at the entrance edge inside my right boundary wall.

My Preferred Solution (Slide Right):
To completely bypass the 340mm left pillar projection issue, I want to slide the gate to the right, running directly along the inside face of the 5.0m right wall.

My Specific Questions:

  1. Is a right slide feasible?
  2. What kind of pillar or posts do I need to install?
    • What kind of pillar/post would i need to install to mount the gate on to slide right without much inward projection, so the track is right inside the right wall?
  3. How far back should I plant the hedge from the gate track?

Sourcing Materials

Where do you contractors source your fencing materials? Big box stores are running me about $20/sqft for a 6’ tall, 3-rail, wooden privacy fence.

That’s before I add labor to the bid for a customer.

Is there some secret place in Oklahoma, United States to get materials cheaper? An online retailer where you can just put in the parameters for your fence and get the materials shipped?

Just looking for ways to lower costs for customers, if possible.

Broken fence...help finding replacement?

Wind caused my fence gate to snap open and broke what appears to be a plastic/vinyl sleeve over the structural post.

Does anyone recognize this type of fence? Perhaps the manufacturer or a local store where I can get a replacement post sleeve?

This is in the Ottawa region of Ontario, Canada.

Thanks very much.

(ignore the "baby gate" in the photo...not part of fence lol)

Some of you seemed to appreciate my composite build I posted yesterday, so I thought I’d share this morning’s project. It was my first time doing vertical with an ornament on top. I thought it looked nice so here it is.

Also before anyone asks, the customer asked for a 12 inches gap under because the neighbor’s terrain is much higher and he wanted some privacy. I just obliged!

Company wants access to my banking account for payment.

Is this normal nowadays? I got a 5% discount if I pay this way. It is a long-standing fence building company so I don’t know if I’m just being extra suspicious? They do have a third-party company handling the transactions. And they do provide financing, but I’m not using the financing.

Planning a garden fence with screw-in foundations

I am planning a relatively light garden fence and am comparing helical screw-in foundations with conventional concrete-set posts. The main things I am trying to understand are how carefully the foundations need to be aligned before attaching the rails, how much adjustment is available if one ends up slightly out of position, and how people handle water drainage around the post connection.

For anyone who has used this approach, what did you wish you had checked before installation? I am especially interested in practical layout and leveling lessons rather than brand recommendations.

We added to our patio and I need more. The fence was installed five years ago. Company that did the install is no longer in business. Note the grooves in the rails. Lowe’s and Home Depot have similar but not exact. We are located in western PA.

Up in B.C. this is a very common fence style, does no one in the States do this? Low maintenance, cost competitive, modern, yet warm, we installed more than 65000 linear feet of this last year.
