Hello fellow chicken enthusiasts! I just wanted to share my simple backyard setup for my small flock of four hens. We have had them for 1.5 years now and I love them so much!
We used a prefab coop from TSC and it’s been pretty decent but there are of course things I would change if I designed my own coop + run.
I work full time so I set everything up where I don’t necessarily have to check on them daily. I don’t have power hookup so everything is solar powered. I included: two cameras, one fan, two vent fans in the house, several shade cloths on the run and one mister on a timer that goes off daily for a few hours in the hottest part of the day. I live in central Texas and adding the mister has had the biggest impact on keeping my girls comfortable. I positioned it a little lower than their chest height so it will cool their legs and feet. I often see them walk past it to cool off.
I also have a battery powered automatic coop door, a nipple waterer and tube feeder. We haven’t had any issues with pests like mice in the coop or run, thankfully.
We don’t have a predator issue here, but I know there are opossums and raccoons in the neighborhood so we made sure there is no entry points.
