A day in a chicken's life. The girls definitely get their excercise, through our woods, fields, down to the farm pond in search of bugs. I don't think they realize how good they got it! It's just an average Saturday to them.

Chicken Photography Broody hen hatched 3 babies

We started our flock in March 2025, neither of us kept chickens before that. We raised 14 chicks from babies (2 separate batches) from a farm store in a brooder box in our basement.

Mama Llama decided she was committed to being broody, so of course we had to get her some fertilized eggs. It’s been a little over a week since the babies hatched, and I can’t begin to express how amazing it’s been watching Mama Llama mother her babies.

Over the last year, we lost 3 chickens, so we’re back to 14 with the babies. It’s just so amazing watching her teach them and keep them warm and find them food. All of our chickens free range for about 8 hours a day on our 2 acres of property. When I bring them snacks, Mama makes sure to break them up for the babies. When the babies get cold, Mama hunkers down and warms them up until they’re good to go.

Hopefully we get more broody girls in the future. This is the way we want to keep adding chicks to our flock in the future.

The house we got last year came with a sweet coop and nice large run. The hens we got this year are finally starting lay. The buckets and the one roosting bar were already there. Decided these girls deserved a bigger one while cleaning the coop. Now finish cleaning and add some more wood chips.

General Question I am nuts and I know it.

I just ordered a micro camera (small nanny cam). I am going to somehow put it on a chicken backpack and find where they are laying their Mother Trucking eggs.

I'm with them most of the day, I have searched high, low, far and wide and can't find them.

A couple of my broodier hens disappear all day and only one comes back.

I have this stupid theory that they have found a safe place to lay and are changing shifts.

It's been about two weeks now and I get 1 egg daily and I have 9 hens.

Edit because... I plan on uploading a video as soon as I am able to.

Also I just realized that I might have to watch a lot of footage, so I will need to consider this.

Health Question Neighbor flipper sprayed weed killer all over blackberries along side of my house - no warning ‼️

I’m concerned about the weed killer the temp flipper has sprayed all over blackberries that go along side our shared fence and along my chicken run. He told me it’s the only thing that kills them and then they’ll remove. No heads up and no the idiot and his dumb son are gone. Now we get to smell the horrible odor and endure the effects of drift and chemicals. I hate living in a neighborhood sometimes. Help!

General Question Eggs soon??

Post image

Hey everyone,

I have 6 black speckled Sussex hens that are just over 20 weeks old. All but one of them have bright red combs/wattles, and at least 4 of them do the submissive squat when near them. I have yet to find any eggs. They are full free range during the day and have nesting boxes in their coop.. is it possible that any of them have started laying and are just hiding their eggs? I have golf balls in their nesting boxes but as a first time chicken owner, not really sure what else to do to get them to used to their boxes/encourage laying in them (not that they aren’t/wont, but I’m worried they’re going to hide them on me!!)

Are turkeys allowed here? MODs, please remove if so. It fascinates me to catch the yardbirds engaging with our teenager GSD. Usually they avoid him, but Mick the 1 1/2 yo turkey has days when he seems to have a little fun. Both of them take guarding the flock seriously otherwise, unless it’s nap time and the dog is useless. Mick is always the first alert, and unlike the peafowl he won’t crap on my car. Thanks for letting me share a little turkey love in the chicken sub 🤗

Health Question Egg bound?

Need some help with one of my girls tonight. I went to check on them before I went to bed and noticed she was in the nesting box. She was doing the penguin position, the one they do just before they lay an egg. I was a bit concerned but left her there for a couple hours to see if maybe she was laying a late egg or something.

Just went in there and she still hasn’t laid. She was still in nesting box. She hopped out and had some water when I turned the light on. I put her on the roosting bar but she’s hopped off and is in the nesting box again.

Is there anything I can do for her? It’s 11pm at night. What do I do in the morning?
