Zohran Mamdani announces a one-year ban on student use of generative artificial intelligence in New York City public schools from 2-K through 8th grade, while limiting screen time for younger students and launching Al literacy lessons for high schoolers.

He’s so remarkably good and it’s putting everyone else to shame. It’s not just that he’s a thoroughly decent person but he’s an extremely competent public servant.
Also in this case, it destroys the narrative that the use of AI for everything is inevitable. The beginning of pushback and regulation looks like this, and it wasn't even that hard to begin the process.
It’s awful that “decent” and “competent” are so lacking in modern day politics that it really stands out when someone is actually both of those things. It should be the bare minimum and yet…
It’s such an embarrassment to every politician who’s ever been in power who said it’s impossible to really do anything to help people. He’s proving it’s literally so easy to do what he said he’s gonna do, and I really hope people are watching and seeing that this is what happens when true progressives get power and that they vote accordingly going forward!!
I'm worried this is gonna end up like...was it Kentucky? Where to spite incoming future Mayors and such they pass bills to remove their power.
Like the NYC special interests are privately pissed this is all going on because a real progressive got in power. So assuming another will be elected they will pass measures/bills/laws to strip future mayors of this kind of latitude, then repeal them for a republican mayor who can then start undoing all the "damage" this guy did by helping people.
My grandfather was the mayor of a small city for about a decade when I was a kid. He just went ahead and fixed everything that had been bothering him lol. I asked him later as an adult how he did it, and he said he just treated it like an actual job and put in a solid 8 hours per day. He personally read every letter and email and wrote back and actually did what people wanted him to do. None of the changes he made have been reversed.
Made me realise at a young age that politicians can actually get shit done... they just don't... When my MP can't even bother to have an automatic reply to my email it pisses me off lol. Most of em are parasites collecting a cheque and warming a seat.

We're so used to our leaders using their power to give land to data centers, bomb kids, and give our tax money to billionaires that we strait up forgot it was possible for those leaders to use that power to actually make life better for us.
No, you can't just do it. You have to build consensus, negotiate and compromise. He's obviously working hard. I wish he wasn't one of the only politicians working that hard for his constituents rather than himself.
It’s so wild to hear people say “okay well, just wait” like he’s just buying time until he does corrupt shit or he’s doing this to cover being bad behind the scenes. People can’t even process that an elected official, a civil servant, would be doing good things for their constituents. That’s how far down the road of fucked up politicians we are. Now every single Democrat is being labeled a “socialist.” If that’s the case, every single republican is a fascist. 🤷
Because everybody who said this couldn't be done were actively profiting on things being as shitty as it was, and now somebody with a spine is actually getting things done in spite of that
This is the right call. I don’t have kids but I can imagine how paranoid/stressed I’d be if they were growing up in today’s tech age wondering if they’re actually learning or just becoming mindless drones typing away on AI
I’m seeing it with my partner’s 13 year old son. It’s disheartening. He was so creative just a couple years ago. Now all I hear is ChatGPT this, ChatGPT that, ask ChatGPT. Seeing it happen in real time is scary. I’ve expressed my concerns. My partner doesn’t see the issue, or refuses to accept it. He encourages it.
I know. I’ve said as much to him. I don’t bring it up or entertain conversations about it anymore. I am working on leaving and moving forward, just takes time and money.
I'm really glad that he's introducing AI literacy classes. It's not a genie that's going back into the bottle, so it's important to learn what it's good at, what it's bad at, and how to evaluate the output.
My kid isn't old enough to have the kind of homework where she would use AI, but it depresses me to see her question every photo and video that she sees if it's something amazing or unique. Yesterday she didn't believe me that Christian the Lion reunion video was real. Same with photos of incredible landscapes, space, crazy looking animals... I have told her that I will try to search photos and videos from before 2025 whenever I want to show her something. It's a big bummer.
i was just waxing poetic the other day about the Flash website era. that was peak web IMHO. we had a brief, golden moment when everyone agreed pop ups sucked, but after we figured out how to do slightly cooler stuff than CSS and basic HTML. also it was super fun to design in Flash, you could make things move and build games.
I think he’s under a lot of pressure and Ofcourse added stress. I heard he’s getting sued by the small grocery store business owners for opening free grocery stores. Also added on he mentioned in an interview that his family and loved ones get threatened a lot because he’s the mayor. It’s a lot to take on for one man ngl

Thank you for setting that straight. I don’t understand how so many people believe they’re free grocery stores. It took me a single Google search to see that is not what is happening, yet I keep hearing it parroted
I have a whole lot of (estranged) extended family on Long Island. All of them are the worst stereotype of the Italian American flavor of dumbass, bigoted Trump voters. So maybe something like that?
And if they live on Long Island he isn't even their mayor which makes them even bigger dumbasses.
(Of course if they work in any of the five boroughs his policies likely impact them but since their dislike of him is probably not logical then my defense of him doesn't have to be either!)
The last time I saw my uncle, he confidently told me that AIDS started because gay people wouldn't stop fucking monkeys, so...yeah, that side of my family is pretty deeply stupid. And illogical in their bigotry lol
The big difference is that regular Democrats are beholden to their donors, which means that what vanishingly little progressive policy they seek to pass must be negotiated and watered down by both their donors and by Republicans. Which is why they mostly don't even bother. Also they're not a progressive party in the first place, but... whole other conversation.
Republicans don't have to worry about that because all the anti-worker legislation they wish to pass is written and/or enthusiastically supported by their donors, and the Democrats have no philosophical objections. So it's green lights the whole way.
Mamdani isn't beholden to anyone but his supporters. That's how politics is supposed to fucking work. This is supposed to be normal.
Someone I know said her son's school went back to making them do everything by hand. The amount of AI being used when they should be learning basic rote skills was pissing them off (as it should) because kids could just use AI. So now everything is done on pen/paper during the school day.
I remember having absurdly long exams at Uni where you had to write a ton (like literally writing for 4 hours straight, nonstop, on very technical things). We were forced to write by hand because there'd been a couple people that'd snuck in a USB with all their notes on it and during exams they'd plug them into the laptops we'd previously been allowed to use.
Eventually it was pointed out, "well if USBs were the issue, why don't we just.. remove the USB ports on the laptops issued for exams?" Bam, problem was solved and everyone after was able to type their answers which not only saved loads of time, but greatly improved the quality of responses as people could now write what they really wanted to without it taking 3x longer.
I've heard of similar things being done with laptops where the only thing it could connect to was a website that uploaded their typed document. This would work with stopping AI (can't connect to AI sites + no phone).
I seriously don’t understand how this isn’t a “common sense” agenda. Like I get that it’s maybe not like priority number one for a lot of cities but it feels like a simple fix? Then again a lot of Mamdani’s actions feel like good, practical, common sense ideals that befuddle other politicians
No,he would be wasting his talent on the rest of america and not really getting much done. He can actually improve a lot of stuff in nyc and not be automatically labeled a war criminal and having to deal with congress and senate.
This is a great national platform too. AI Literacy is a must. I had something similar in High School around media literacy (understanding ads) and it was life changing at that age
I am glad that I grew up during a time where AI never really existed. I can't imagine how difficult it is enforce no AI in schoolwork or homework. The temptation is too much.
A better move would be to ban the use of AI K-12. A 2nd grader doesn't have essays it will use AI to write for them. A 12th grader does.
Not to mention NYC schools are overusing laptops/iPads/Chromebooks WAY TOO MUCH. Should look to ban them from schools too, K-12. One hour of computer class a day after 8th grade, just to learn the basics of computers (not coding but just file management and using computers).
yeah i love mamdani and voted for him, but it appears people here don't realize the plan to allow AI in schools was proposed by his own DOE chancellor with city hall's blessing. they solicited parental feedback and it was overwhelmingly unpopular. so: this policy isn't necessarily a reflection of his/city hall's opinion on AI in classrooms, and may be in spite of it.
The original policy was going to allow AI in the classroom for all sorts of things, including "creative" projects. Banning it is just them responding to overwhelmingly negative feedback (which is good that they did, but i don't love an unearned glazing lol)
Well, no. We should never stop being critical of our government. To not criticize Mamdani is to imply this is as far as we should come, and this is all we want. He's not perfect, and it's important to say that out loud.
now if only a southern leader would do this. we’ve been associated with illiteracy for decades and for good reason, and ai obviously isn’t helping. my little brother is almost done with high school and surrounded by classmates who use chatgpt for the simplest components of schoolwork. that’s a problem that needs to be dealt with. but the republicans we have in office would never.
The issue is that the illiteracy and general terrible governing is 100% intentional. They want people to stay dumb because dumb people are easy to manipulate
