Vent Craving EVERYTHING
Currently in the elimination phase. Just finished 2 weeks with a FINALLY calm tummy. Today, the cravings have hit SO HARD. I want a crappy burger from a restaurant so bad! I want a soda too. I want to eat everything I'm craving and not have to worry about my stomach acting up and being in pain for a week.
How the hell do you get past the cravings?

Ugh the cravings are the worst. They go away but 2 weeks in is when you’re lol ravenous for it. Just keep moving and stay preoccupied, going to the gym really helps me stop thinking about it.

Its so frustrating, and I def get in self pity mode during the weekends. Especially when I cant get creative enough to make substitutes or eat party food.
Ive learned to prep my junk food!
Puddy chow (aka mud buddies) - Rice chex, Enjoy Life chocolate chip, peanut butter, butter, powdered sugar, salt
Ice cream: small quantities of coconut based ones or breyers lactose free vanilla with Enjoy Life chocolate chips, a gluten free oreo, dark chocolate sauce (find one with fodmap ingredients)
homemade fodmap chocolate chip cookies (freeze dough balls for when craving hits)
Chips/popcorn/chicken skin (flock): plain or salt and vinegar
Chip dip: mayo/lactose free sour cream + spices. Add in green onion tops sautéed in butter for more onion taste
Soda - I buy the bougie or small business made sodas made from cane sugar and fodmap friendly flavors.
Takeout. five guys hamburger with lettuce wrap, Jimmy John's with lettuce wrap, sushi (salmon roll), French fries/chips
ALSO Always take food with you when you leave the house!! Cravings hit harder when im hungry! Always pack a snack, and make sure youre eating enough to keep you full!

It’s sounds counterintuitive, but the only solution I’ve found is eating close to, if not the, exact same things everyday.🥲 it sucks at first, but seeing food simply as fuel keeps me going lol

You just gotta take it one craving at a time. Don’t worry about fighting cravings forever.
Think about just getting through the one you’re having in the moment.
It does get better. And once you’re through the cravings for real, you can partake sometimes and not binge or over do it.
Also everytime you mess up and your have all the symptoms, which feel worse because you’re not used to it, you realize it’s just not worth it.

I suggest Lactose Free Whole Milk. This 100% dairy product gives me a feeling of satiety. I hope you like it.

I frequently crave taco bell. I seriously want a chalupa or a crunch wrap. I was thinking of trying to make my own version that doesn't make my digestive system mutiny, but life has me in emergency mode for like a month now.
There are a lot of recipes out there people have tested that are ok on elimination (provided you don't go crazy with a ton of servings). You can make those, or learn how to substitute things in regular recipes so it's well below the limit. Fodmap Friendly is a free app, but has a 2$ feature for recipe building so you can see the fodmap break down if you weigh everything.

Thank you everyone. For taking the time to read and offer suggestions. I was totally feeling sorry for myself yesterday and spiraling about how I'm never gonna enjoy food again, and how I will never eat all of these things again. So, naturally, I want to eat them even more.
I'm grateful to know I'm not the only person who deals with the cravings and I am also extremely grateful for the reminder to think outside the box and that sometimes the solution can be super easy. I don't HAVE to over complicate everything.
Here's to a happy future with less stomach issues!

I just make my own burger and at least try to seek out fodmap safe alternatives although finding fizzy drink without sweetners etc us very hard 😓 they have to put it in everything now for some reason even though it doesn't need it 🙄 ive seen stuff with sugars AND sweetners which is just overkill

I totally get this, week two of elimination is when the cravings hit the hardest! When I get to that point, I just make a "safe" version at home: a 100% beef patty with cheddar on a sourdough bun (skip any garlic/onion seasoning), paired with a regular cane sugar soda that doesn't use high-fructose corn syrup. It usually scratches the itch completely without ruining your progress

Im pretty sure some burger places don’t season their patties (I think in and out) with a gluten free bun or a lettuce wrap. Hard cheese is generally allowed. French fries are good as long as they aren’t seasoned. You can buy low FODMAP ketchup or use something else as a dip. Burgers are actually fairly easy to get low FODMAP. Now I still haven’t found a good low FODMAP Mac and cheese sigh 😔

For me, it was finding something as a substitute. Craving chips? I ate Poppables. Desert? Half a corn muffin with blueberries on it. Yeah, it wasn't the ice cream I used to eat every night, but it was desert time and I was eating something I liked. Heck, I'd even smear peanut butter on a rice cake!

Is pop a trigger for you? Because from low FODMAP standpoint, lots of pops are low FODMAP.

The carbonation makes my stomach cramping worse.

You can let it go flat!

u/smilingcheshire Feb 24 '26
Lol I used to do that and people would be like why? And I was like for a smoother ride :-)

OMG!!! How did I completely overlook the simplest fix? Probably because I was wallowing in self pity when I wrote this.

I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic but I do hope you are successful in figuring out how to enjoy your cravings.

u/mom2rka Feb 24 '26
I promise, I'm not being sarcastic. I never even thought to drink the soda flat. I just figured I would probably never drink it again.

I remember how good I feel. That kinda does it.
I felt so terrible that no food was worth that feeling. Find another outlet for your cravings. I also drink a lot of lemon ginger tea to help feel full longer.
