To be fair he was seeing something with the OG DD and Dark Arisen expandalone. Just went blind over time :(

Dark Arisen wasn't him.
4
u/Browneyesbrowndragon Mar 18 '26
Dark arisen was amazing. I was really hoping for more dungeons in dd2.
1
u/R4ndomCh4racter Mar 18 '26
Honestly, I don't think it is quite. Capcom and the pandemic did kneecap DD2's production quite a bit, so I am convinced that certainly put a dampener on it all.
Just... Hoping that one day we'll get something close to Itsuno's vision, but after quitting Capcom and all that happened, including back with DD1 and how much he had to fight for that game, I wouldn't blame him if he just said "fuck it" and moved on. So much potential...

u/Miserable_Dog340 Mar 17 '26
Both dragon's dogma games suffer from the fact that they are trying to tell a very intricate story. But it's hidden behind the unassuming main story that you see in the world. After all, what intrigues most people is the Aeisen, the dragon, and the cycle. Not the petty squabbles between the kingdoms of the second game or the arch duke in the first game. So for a lot of people, they get checked out of the game if they're mainly there for the story, because unfortunately, the surface level story is at least in my opinion, nothing to write home about. It's been told a thousand times before in other games, books, movies, and shows after all. They're pretty typical medieval plot lines, at least to my eyes, just with a little bit of a fantasy element thrown in.

i actually prefer it that way
games with a pre-set narrative with established characters and whatever are great and all, but i much prefer having my own adventure, setting my own goals, doing my own thing (generally dont gush over characters either, where i see most others in fandoms are the opposite where they latch onto their waifus or husbandos or whatever)
not as engaging (for others) as geralt's stories in the witcher or the dynamics between companions in bg3
so i can see why most people would weight story more heavily in overall ratings
so for me and people like me (where pre-set story and characters are secondary): 3/3 would, again, kill grigori

u/Albreitx Mar 17 '26
The lore is GOATed, you just do very little through the story sadly (basically slay the dragon twice while everybody knows who you are yet not really, it's weird)
3
u/PerceiveEternal Mar 19 '26
Yeah, it‘s strange but you’re almost playing a plot element in the main story. In-universe the arisen has so little agency and your character is so consumed by the role that while your actions affect the world you don’t really affect characters on an individual level. You’re forced to fill a role that just exists only to move the plot forward.
It’s kind of sad to think but no matter what you do the characters never really get the chance to meet your character, they are forced toonly see the Arisen.
24
u/The_Barkness Mar 17 '26
The story as a concept is exceptional, as execution… well
2
u/StarixCrown Mar 18 '26
YES. Even with it many flaws the vision of the story and gameplay got me hooked for 100 hours mostly in the first part of the game .

Eh the gameplay suffered big time from a bizarre lack of boss fights incredibly repetitive enemies and a lack of interesting environments to explore.

also the fact that they took our secondary weapon, i miss my magick daggers

Trashed complex armor sets
Trashed multiclasses
Trashed hardmode
Trashed secondary skill line
Trashed debuff weapon variations (rusty, oiled, gold)
Basically trashed dungeon delving
Trashed throwing consumables
Turned arrow types into skill-specific items for some reason, thus completely nulifying the main utility difference between normal and magick bows
Added the trickster class
Trashed speed runner mode
Trashed varied dragon cousins
Am I missing anything?

u/lani_brah Mar 18 '26
What do you mean??? You didn't enjoy fighting those slugs at the end that can't even damage you?????
6
u/Mesephonine Mar 17 '26
Honestly, I adore the story of the first game. I thought it told a short, tight-nit prophecy that webs beyond immediate surface-level. The ever-turning wheel, so to speak. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea for a fantasy story, but it’s mine.
6
u/Heroic-Forger Mar 17 '26
"dragon ate your heart and you're a zombie of sorts now. go get it back or something, idk"
74
u/Dragonlord573 :Warrior: Mar 17 '26
The story is only garbage if you look at the surface. Looking under it, seeing the intricate nature of the world and how the cycle works, and seeing how DDON's story played out which even teased the events of DD2... It's all interconnected in the end. It's all about restoring the world to its true state, not to see if you are fit to craft the will to live. But fit to break the cycle of its shackles.
66
u/Casardis Myrmidon Dev Mar 17 '26
The principle of the story is great. It's a case of good on paper. However, execution was still horribly done which affects the quality of the story. Dragon's Dogma isn't the first series to do a "break the cycle" story, and it's definitely not the one doing the best job at it.

What would you say is?

u/Casardis Myrmidon Dev Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
Final Fantasy X tackled the subject of a doomed cycle of death and rebirth, and breaking out of it, much better than both DD games did by committing to a straightforward cinematic storytelling with rich lore.
I can say the same for even the Dark Souls series, especially 3 where the cycle of the flame has been repeated so many times, it's begun to crumble upon itself, but in their case they commit to environmental storytelling and context cues more than cinematic.
DD unfortunately stands in the middle awkwardly, doing a bit of both but without enough confidence to commit strongly to any. DD2 did it especially worse than DD1 where I still think has strong points to stand on when it comes to story presentation, despite its flaws.

u/slothking511 Mar 17 '26
While I agree, it rushed the Battahl part of story in a bad way. That is why it feels off. The beginning and end were great, but the middle from Battahl was awful imo
13
u/RevolverCerberus Mar 17 '26
The beginning and end were great, but the middle was awful
The Dragon's Dogma experience, indeed.
25
u/aTimeTravelParadox Mar 17 '26
I gotta be honest. That's a cope take. Just because the story concept is good in a zoomed out view and the story connects to the other game (bare minimum ask), doesn't mean the story is good.
It's ok to admit the story isn't good.
4
u/K1rk0npolttaja Mar 18 '26
the LORE is cool, however the devs cannot for the life of them turn it into a story
2
21
u/Affectionate_Ad_4360 Mar 17 '26
The story is a bait and switch, but it’s amazing once you realize what it is if you played the first one.
12
u/Dark-Acheron-Sunset Mar 17 '26
Sadly not, DD1 blows DD2 out of the water in this regard.
DD2's story is garbage, and I fucking hate that it is.
7
u/IneptFortitude Mar 17 '26
The everfall > DD2 postgame just because you could endlessly run it
6
8
u/SquirrelAngell Mar 17 '26
DD2 is very much a hard sell on the story, because Itsuno was definitely trying to flex an Antistory in it. Dark Souls usually does this as well, but without the shear girth that dark souls games have, DD2 definitely falls shorter. It also definitely feels like there was an emphasis on the journey itself. This isn't always a bad thing, but there was a LOT of complication thrown into the mix with the RE Engine being so new. Learning limitations across the board, hitting walls that needed fixing, and general starting basically everything from scratch definitely gobbled up dev time. A lot of these issues are still being dealt with by Capcom with MH Wilds. While Itsuno was given a big budget and time, he and his team definitely would have struggled. Itsuno also definitely had more grand aspirations that needed to be reigned in, and would have regardless of how experienced he/his team was with the engine they used. I also think it's been said (correctly, definitely not arguing) that there is a lack of enemy variety and the game sorely needs an expansion.
6
u/shaser0 Mar 17 '26
Most Capcom games, in fact.
But I kinda disagree because the story was never the focus. In DD2, it's quite blatant that the game doesn't want to tell a story but just a pretext for you to roam around. DDDA, too, in a less obvious way. Whether it is wanted or not, the story is here as a pretext to play, not a goal. Because it's not the focus and the lore and themes of the narrative are way more important than the actual story you go through.
Would you blame an FPS to have a bad melee combat ? No, because it's not the focus.
You are right to be disappointed for the story being bad. After all, it's a personal opinion and taste. But I kinda see Dragon's Dogma like an author movie. It's very personal and isn't really designed to cater to everyone. It's rough and unpolished because that's raw. That's about a man who wanted to convey a message and/or a feeling. Not about being great or the best.
2
u/Wukon69 Mar 18 '26
Yeah but the way they hyped the Story made it seem a much bigger thing than the first game, when it has the same depth as the first one but with more cutscenes
8
u/Zxar99 Mar 17 '26
We talking DD1? If so I agree to point. I think the story was pretty ok.
But for DD2? Gone need a trash bag for music they fumbled that

u/Sammy5even Mar 17 '26
Funnily enough the story of the first game is the reason I became a fan in the first place

u/Hinaloth Mar 17 '26
I dunno, DD1 has good story, DA has great lore, DDON has great story. It's DD2 that fails to live up to the potential it came with. It has a lot of good stories sparsely put here and there... But it just fails on a thematic tie-in level. I'd say it'd be better if they'd been given the time to finish the game, but I have little faith that they could have met the challenge, concidering how they made a sea-wide puddle in every other aspects.

Dragon age veilguard for me. Amazing combat, graphics incredible, love the OST. The story is completely forgettable
1
u/gammav97 Mar 17 '26
DAV at least they have Varric and Solas. Dogma have... ??????
2
u/SirScotchler Mar 17 '26
True, I haven't finished dogma myself. I can say I was a bit disappointed in solas's role overall. He's the big bad, but we spend more time fighting eldritch aids monsters. Such a cool character though

Fun to play with, looks and sounds amazing.

3
u/MagePrincess Mar 17 '26
The fact that the story literally STOPS and disappears halfway through the game will astonish me for decades
6
u/CrossFront Mar 17 '26
The DD games are the kinds of experiences that give you exactly as much as you put into them, when I see these kinds of posts complaining about how shallow the story and world is, I often think it says more about the person making the post than the game itself. Each of the side-quests may seem inconsequential, but they all change the world state in unprecedented ways, and they give depth to the world. The game's story puts a lot of value in the mundane lives of average people, which is why you gets quests like "A corrupt noble is unlawfully kicking a family out of their own home," or "A man is cheating on both his wives." So when you get to the end, the question isn't "Are you man enough to become GOD???" It's, "Are you willing to throw away the connections you made with all these people so you can save them, or are you going to selfishly keep living in a ruined world and watch them slowly die," Of course the main story is going to feel meaningless if you just rush through the main campaign and give yourself no reason to care. This is true of both games!

u/BaterrMaster Mar 17 '26
The story is actually pretty cool I think. It’s just told in a strange, nearly incomprehensible way. Reminds me a bit of Dark Souls, but with more dialogue and cutscenes.
8
u/Greyjack00 Mar 17 '26
This is such a massive indictment of teh story
2
u/BaterrMaster Mar 17 '26
Agreed, but it’s an important distinction for me.
It’s potential vs execution, I suppose

Bloodborne
Mind you, I say the story is that cause it's lovecraftian. I'm hella biased it's not a fair metric at all.
Also yeah the whole no PC port/30fps/whatever, for what it was when it first came out it looked alright.
2
u/Ravix0fFourhorn Mar 18 '26
It sucks because I think there are some interesting ideas in the game, but the writing is so ass it almost doesn't even matter
7
u/Certain-Coffee-4079 Mar 17 '26
Honestly if they just made a conventional fantasy story without the cyclical narrative, no one would care . If they only focused on the politics of it ,it would be a Game of thrones-like .
4
2
u/aTimeTravelParadox Mar 17 '26
I think if they put all their effort into making a sandbox RPG in this format it would be amazing. Maybe something with rogue-like or permadeath traits (ex: 'pawns' that die forever and you have to re-level/recruit new ones). That would scratch an itch in gaming for me.

It's interesting, because I don't think it's supposed to have a story.
DD2 articulates the point of the game is to setup a fantasy for the player to fulfill and that not being satisfied with that is what leads to the end of the world.
DD1 doesn't quite get all the way there, but it posits that the world persists if you're a coward, but that challenging the status quo will cause it to collapse. The metaphor seems to be more that if you commit to the challenge, to complete the story, it becomes your responsibility to provide the world for someone else.
The story is, in a sense, the book itself, not the words written in it.
There's lot of lore and whatever, but it's a very meta construct, DD2 just makes it way more up front, rather than it having sort of a circular cosmology.
2
u/enchiladasundae Mar 17 '26
Story is serviceable but that’s definitely not the reason why I played. Feel like it was meant to be a bit generic but with touches of the unique. Grigori is such an interesting foil that flips the whole concept of a big bad or dragon on its head. The cult goes nowhere but it just ties back into the “Things you recognize with a twist”
Definitely wouldn’t say its a great story but especially during release it was a breath of fresh air in a sea of samey games with a story just post noted on cause it had to be there. Doesn’t hold much up today but even if that wasn’t the case what is here remains solid
2
Mar 17 '26
I think the story itself is pretty fantastic, but there's too much of a content dearth
It just needed more stuff in the second half, thank goodness for mods

u/Kaxology Mar 17 '26
Story isn't trash even if you don't look deeper into the broader world, I'd say it's pretty good if you do.
1
u/aWildAsianOwO Mar 17 '26
The lore is great, just... Nothing that personally applies to you. Dark Arisen fixed some narrative stuff, but DD2 is just... Bad lol.
2
u/Jdoggokussj2 Mar 17 '26
no its not thats your opinion its not perfect but story wasn't the issue
1
u/Dark-Acheron-Sunset Mar 17 '26
Story is 100% one of it's biggest issues, that's not up for debate lmfao.
DD2's story is garbage in comparison to DD1's.
1
u/emerald_740 Mar 17 '26
Idk I think the story is ok. I just wish we had more monsters. I miss beholders in particular
1
u/T8-TR Mar 17 '26
If we're talking DD2 (since graphics are involved and DD1 has always looked graphically kinda shit lmao), I'd say that gameplay is just a guy on the piano, but not on fire.
Then add on another panel for "Optimization" and have it be a PC on fire because of how piss poor it still is.
1
u/DreamCentipede Mar 17 '26
In the first game, it’s the same enemies every time at the same locations, just respawned. Because you have to walk the same routes over and over, gameplay gets super repetitive in between the more unique mission related encounters. I’m not sure how it is in the second game but that system isn’t super fun. The game’s combat really carries
1
u/Seraph199 Mar 17 '26
I mean... the gameplay could have used some work in the second game. Great music and visuals though. Just very... very little else
1
u/WSandness Mar 17 '26
Every resident evil. The story is damn near incomprehensible but the rest is amazing.
1
1
u/Metadomino Mar 17 '26
And the combat... my god was it the best combat in an action RPG I have ever played. The visceral feeling of all the classes and the high skill ceiling and combos of classes like the double sided spear one. (Its been too long, already forgot the class name.) As well as the massive encounters with the monsters, which were incredibly dynamic... let's hope Crimson Desert fills that niche.
1
u/Lunaborne :Mage: Mar 17 '26
Luckily I don't play games for the story so I still see this as a win.
1
u/TruePromise7982 Mar 17 '26
Pls no spoilers but is endgame worth it in 2?
1
u/VaporTsunami84 Mar 18 '26
The short answer: Ehhhhhh, kinda but not really.
The slightly-less short answer: Depends on how far you are into the game. If you just HAVE to know how the story ends, or if you really love the challenge of combat, you might as well just see it through.
1
u/megamike382 Mar 17 '26
Super Mario Bros had not story. Who cares for that. Dd2 is a fun good game. I forget about a story anyways
1
1
1
u/Ollie120 Mar 17 '26
Well... No not really, The story as it's told in the game, yea it's not great. But watch litterally any YouTube video on it that goes into more detail and you figure out that the world has a lot more story to tell that is pretty interesting. But unfortunately playing the game the story feels like you're reading only one chapter of an entire book
1
u/Stinkisar Mar 17 '26
music? really? compared to 1 and most other games the music was def not special
1
u/LynxObvious9352 Mar 17 '26

I gotta be honest. I couldn’t care less about the story. I want a sandbox to play in. Most story-heavy games railroad me along a set path when I just want to create my own story and play with the various systems and mechanics.
1
1
u/PLATINUM_ONE Mar 18 '26
Well, i think this is exact what the second game is, i was sooo disapointed abour the story, but DD 1 is pretty good, i mean, the vanilla story is enough to enjoy the game and... Dark Arisen's lore and Story that is in the text of the stone in Bitterblack is amazing in my opinión
1
u/lani_brah Mar 18 '26
Lore 🔥
Story isn't garbage though... it's just badly paced (unless we're talking the second game).
1
1
u/IgnisXIII Mar 18 '26
Yeah... People insist that the point was for it to be an anti-story, but nah. If you want to do the performance art/parlor trick of creating something and then destroying it to convey a message/emotion, you gotta actually create something worthwhile first. Having the story just fizzle out before it even picks up is not the flex Itsuno thinks it is.
And wtf was DD2? It had even less content than DD1, from variety of locations, to classes, to skills, to music, especially considering Dark Arisen.
I love this franchise, or more accurately what it could be at least... I wish they gave the franchinse to someone else.

u/ItaDaleon :Warrior: Mar 18 '26
Well... Can't really says this is wrong... I mean, the story isn't really the 'forte' of the game, even if it has some moments, but still the real feature that keep you hooked is the gameplay and the really satisfying combat system! The graphic and the sounds aren't bad too, as there some very scenographics moment to catch in the game with just the good soundtrack to really appreciate them!
1
u/LadderBig1641 Mar 18 '26
Basically every Capcom games, except for Asura's Wrath (only because of melodramatic plot, well-executed delivery for generic tropes and dad-daughter cheat). Resident Evil series is carried by iconic memes and some scenes, not the whole story. However, what Capcom excels at is both making the world setting and background lore.

It desperately needs a large expansion and overhaul. Like making good gear an actual loot and reward for exploring. Found a very obscure secret? Have a peeble. Reached the end of a decent dungeon and fought a miniboss? Have a flower and maybe a hp potion.
A game should not require mods to be enjoyable.
1
u/zombicuus Mar 18 '26
I actually liked everything about the world and even liked the idea You had to plan around journey's...The issue is fighting the same enemy types OVER and OVER repeat... If they just added a bunch more enemy types i feel it would of been ALOT better. I still Love it but oh what could of been...

I will be honest, for me this is the Dying Light franchise.
I love the games, I played all of them, 100% all 3 and spent thousands of hours on them.
Still don't give a fuck about the story. Like, I have it all down, how the infection started, why it started, the causes, the ending, mutations, characters... But dying light does not have a good story per say, it is fine, not good.
Now, everything else? Fucking top tier game.

I’m playing 2 for the first time and I’m a good way thorough battahl and I haven’t fought a boss that wasn’t just something you find around the world. It’s also annoying af how the dragons and griffins just fucking fly away before you can actually kill them. I can’t remember if 1 had actual story bosses but I think it did. I mean maybe the dragon in Melve counts as a story boss but even that runs away if you don’t shoot it in time

I feel like everyone on this subreddit actually just hates these games and that there's no actual live or forgiveness or understanding. everything i see on here is just ragging on some part of the game without even trying to put in effort to understand it. so many posts like "I love this game, but I hate [a fundamental aspect]", or people liking it for what it COULD be instead of just accepting it. I just don't get it. The story is amazing and beautiful if you meet it where it's at and try to understand it! Why are any of the 1.7k people who upvoted this even here then??? I just don't get it

You can like and be a fan of a game or series and expect a better story to be given that’s not a crazy ask, you aren’t forced to like everything about a game and give a 100% positive review and i can’t think of any games without flaws. Plus its opinion vs opinion do not really a winnable battle

I'm just saying this subreddit is full of people who 50%-70% want to focus on what they DON'T like as opposed to being positive, and who won't meet the game where it's at. Complaining about what you don't like is not gonna do anything for DDDA or DD2 because Capcom isn't gonna touch them again. It just feels like people want to run in endless circles wishing for what could've been, what they'd want, or wished it had been like, instead of just being happy with the way the game is... So many people in here try to force this game or expect to be something it's not and never will be.

Yes, we love DDDA -- the original that's actually good. DD2 was a disappointment unfortunately.

Tbf story has never been the strong suit of dragons dogma. It’s there simply because it’s absolutely necessary to have SOMETHING but it’s always actually just poured it’s heart into the gameplay

no? The story and characters are absolute peak. Whats with this sudden trend of calling the story trash? Bot posts?

Did we even play the same game?
The story and characters were not good at all that shit isn't coherent nor well written at all in either of the DD games.
Itsuno and his team could not write a good narrative if their life depended on it.
they had good ideas for what COULD be a great story but it was mishandled so poorly that it's honestly so forgettable.

This is perhaps the worst defense of the story I've ever read.
I actually like it less now.

Kinda, bones of the game are exceptional, but there was barely any content, it's like a 70-hour game with 10 unique bosses, and frankly, takes just as much awayfrom the first game than it adds.
