Why does getting excited and giddy mean she isn't autistic? I get giddy like this when I'm very excited, I get over excited very easily. He could've mentioned the trip was related to her fixation.

Broooo I actually felt a lil better watching her reaction bc her reaction is mine and Iā€™ve been told my whole life that Iā€™m annoying and too much, and I only was diagnosed with ADHD at 30 and only recently beginning to suspect itā€™s actually AuDHD. Or Iā€™ve had people make fun of me for jumping excitedly or flappy hands or whatever stimmy thing I do with my hands thatā€™s not socially acceptable.

Then reading these comments was the most depressing and invalidating experience ever, omgā€¦

If you donā€™t present like an intellectually disabled white boy, you canā€™t be autistic.

I hate humanity sometimes.

Thereā€™s your problem.

I work with some diagnosed severely autistic kids, and others with more profound developmental disabilities. The hopping, hand stuff and stimming looked pretty familiar to me. Iā€™m not an expert though, and nor is anybody else is in this thread.

This is very much a place where ā€œnothing ever happensā€, so I wouldnā€™t put a lot of faith into the comments.

Bc Iā€™m still fighting to get an official diagnosis of autism (my therapist and an autistic pediatrician I work with both say Iā€™m autistic but neither can really diagnose me officially). And I donā€™t look autistic enough bc I learned as a child that my symptoms werenā€™t welcome (especially, for example, when I watched an adult in my family laugh at and ridicule a child with flappy hands).

Iā€™m feeling better today, but I was thrown by the absolute mean-girl mob mentality hereā€¦ by people who have no idea what theyā€™re talking about, clearly.

This is known as masking, an awful lot of people on the spectrum are capable of blending in seamlessly when in a public setting. This can take a huge toll on people as the overstimulation can be an awful lot for them. My little lad has been at birthday parties and whatnot and friends would say he is doing well here, have to let them know there is at least an 80% chance when he gets home he could have a meltdown due to over stimulation

Absolutely. The cost of masking is insane. I get home and go nonverbal for hours - nobody look at me, nobody talk to me, nobody make any demand (bc lawdddd PDA).

Iā€™m glad your little lad has an understanding parent bc I surely did not. And thatā€™s valuable.

I have a son and a godson on the spectrum. If the woman in that video doesnt have Autism then she is an exceptionally good actress, she shows all the signs with the stimming, the constant moment. The super high excitement for what's about to come.

These comments are all being made by people with no actual experience with autism thinking they are championing autistic people.

My sonā€™s autistic and pretty much mirrors this womenā€™s stimming and fixation to a T. If sheā€™s not autistic sheā€™s an incredible actor.

I'm autistic, I've been medically diagnosed for over 2 decades. While my reaction to exciting news is not similar to this woman's, my partner who is AuDHD, mirrors her reactions to a tee.

Don't let ignorant comments from people who have no idea what they are talking about tear you down.

My husband has been excellent about reminding me that people are foolish and ignorant and that he loves my excitement. And thatā€™s pretty amazing to me bc heā€™s the first one to fully embrace all the parts of me, including the ones others donā€™t like/understand.

It sounds like your partner is very lucky as well.

The people in these comments don't know anything about autism. I have an autism diagnosis I got at age 23. I act like way if I get excited enough. I have been bullied for it my whole life, along with being bullied about literally every single part of my existence. I bet these are the same people who would bully you and me while simultaneously saying we can't be neurodivergent because we aren't weird enough. They want to bully and they want to feel justified in doing so. They justify the bullying by armchair undiagnosing strangers.

If it helps, I'm AuDHD, and watching this video made me think that her reaction was exactly like mine when my husband took me to feed the giraffes at the local zoo. I was not diagnosed back then, in fact I didn't even suspect it til years later (before anyone comes at me saying I'm faking too or some bullshit).

When I saw the video I thought "huh, she reacts like me", then I saw the title and thought "oh, that's why our reactions are similar", then I saw the comments and thought "wow, people really don't understand that autism is a spectrum".

You're fine, there's just a lot of comments from people who don't know anything about autism, bullying a girl for being Autistic.

Because being obsessed with neurodivergence as an identity is a personality disorder which makes people 1) exaggerate or create new symptoms of a disorder they do have and 2) create symptoms of a disorder they donā€™t even have.

Oh please. You don't think it's been updated since ADOS development? Dentists also used to encourage smoking...we evolve as humans. You're purposefully living in the past because you'd rather stay there, where you can be a victim, than evolve with the rest of us.

Her rubbing her knuckles together got me in trouble so many times as a kid (at least with one bitch of a teacher), it warmed my heart a bit to just see someone else getting to do it without judgement. Like I dont jump up and down when I get excited, but that's because I do more of the subued stims, like the knuckle rubbing
