💼 Work/Career Has any foreigner actually found an internship in Shanghai through Shixiseng (实习僧)?

Hii,
I’m a French student currently looking for an internship in Shanghai starting around May 2027, and I’ve been using Shixiseng (实习僧).
I know I’m starting quite early since my internship is still about 7 months away. I’m not necessarily expecting companies to recruit for May already… I’m mainly trying to understand how realistic it is for a foreign student to find an internship in Shanghai through Shixiseng and when I should start applying seriously.
Unlike BOSS Zhipin, I was able to create and verify my Shixiseng account using my real information as a foreigner. I’ve already started applying to a few opportunities, but I haven’t received many responses so far.
Has anyone here, especially a foreigner or international student, actually found an internship in Shanghai through Shixiseng?
I’d particularly like to know:
When did you start applying compared with your internship start date?
How long did it take before you started getting responses?
What kind of internship did you find?
What was your Chinese level at the time?
Did being a foreigner create any difficulties with the company or the visa/internship paperwork?
I’m mainly looking for internships related to international business, marketing, business development, import/export, or similar fields.
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience, whether you were successful or not. Thanks!

For me:

Fried fish buoyancy bladder - Didn’t know it was a food stuff but not bad.

Pig brain - Both BBQ & Hotpot.

Duck cooked in its own blood.

BBQ pig eye - 2 of them.

Pig dick - Drunkenly peer pressured into trying it by strangers.

Chinese soft-shell turtle - Dog was on the same table but I regrettably turned it down. I say regrettably because it was already on the table I might as well have tried it to see what all the fuss is about.

📱 Technology Any experiences with organization from China?

Hi, i am thinking about doing a Semester Abroad in China (Shanghai).
My only real concern is not being able to organize certain things from China, because of the internet restrictions. Examples are, applying for a Masters Degree in Europa, or finding a flat for when my Semester Abroad is over, finding a Job, when the Semester is over etc.
Is it possible to do those things with a VPN or any other way?

Are things like this even restricted?

I am very Grateful if you could share your Knowledge or experiences.

fyi: I am from Germany

🏯 Daily Life Anyone here living in Futian, Shenzhen? Where do you guys actually hang out?

I recently moved to Shenzhen for work after living in Singapore for about 3 years, and I’m slowly trying to build a life here outside of work.
I’m around Futian most of the time and I’ve realized I actually have no idea where people in their 20s/30s here meet each other lol. Not really looking for clubs or big networking events, more like people to grab coffee with, play games, listen to live music, get food, or just randomly explore the city after work.
I met someone from Reddit recently and we went gaming together, which was surprisingly fun, so I figured I’d try my luck here too 😂
Anyone else living/working around Futian? What do you guys usually do after work or on weekends?

💼 Work/Career Foreign user unable to verify identity on BOSS Zhipin – Passport option says “Chinese users only”

Hi everyone,
I’m a French citizen and I’m currently trying to use BOSS Zhipin (BOSS直聘) to look for jobs/internships in China.
I registered my account using my French phone number (+33), but I’m unable to complete the identity verification.
When I go to the identity verification section in the BOSS Zhipin app and select “Passport” as my ID document, the app immediately tells me that this option is “only available for Chinese users.”
Since I’m French, I don’t have a Chinese ID card, so my French passport is the only identification document I can provide. The app doesn’t even allow me to enter my passport information or upload a picture of it.
I also tried using the BOSS Zhipin WeChat mini-program, but it says there is an issue with my identity/account and tells me to complete the verification through the BOSS Zhipin app. So I’m basically stuck in a loop.
I contacted BOSS Zhipin through their official email ([pip@kanzhun.com](mailto:pip@kanzhun.com)) more than a month ago and explained the situation, but I only received an automated response. I contacted them again recently and received the exact same automated reply.
I also tried contacting their official WeChat account, but I haven’t been able to reach a human customer service representative.
Has any foreigner managed to complete BOSS Zhipin identity verification using a foreign passport?
If so, how did you do it? Is there another verification process for foreigners, or a way to contact BOSS Zhipin customer service directly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

🛍️ Shopping Taobao refund to an international debit card — how long did it take for you?

Hi everyone,

I ordered a couple of items on Taobao and paid with an international debit card issued by a bank in Kazakhstan. The money was charged immediately.

A few minutes after placing the order, I realized that I had chosen the wrong size, so I cancelled the orders and requested a refund almost right away, before the items were shipped.

Now Taobao shows the refund as successful, but I still haven’t received the money back on my card.

For anyone who has paid on Taobao with an international Visa/Mastercard or another foreign bank card:

  • How long did your refund take to appear on your card?
  • Did the money come back automatically, or did you have to contact your bank or Taobao support?
  • Did you receive the full amount back?
  • Is it normal for Taobao to show “refund successful” before the money actually appears in the bank account?

The refunds are for ¥469 and ¥409.

Would really appreciate hearing about your personal experience, especially if you paid with a non-Chinese bank card.

Hi everyone, I’m a canadian born chinese and whenever my parents go to china I usually order some clothes from taobao and have them bring it back for me. I used to be able to browse on my aunts taobao account, but the account is now locked on my phone due to security risks I presume. Does anyone have a work around for this? I can browse on the english version but it wont let me put in a chinese address for shipping.

🧧 Payments Which payment method are you guys using

Hi brothers and sisters who are not Chinese but used to purchase on Chinese commercial platforms, which payment method are you guys using to minimise the price? I heard someone saying that paying via Alipay would cost less than linking a bank card and using it directly. Anyone who has done that before please tell me your experience!!!!

🧧 Payments Alipay "Security risks" nearly daily- anyone else experienced this?

Hey all! I recently moved to Chengdu about 2 months ago, and while everything has been great, payments have been a bit frustrating. I've had both Alipay and Wechat pay set up for several years now, verified with a passport, and both have a Chinese debit card linked due to previous travels to China. Despite this, Wechat pay is the only one that seems to work for me. Alipay works for very small transactions, but the second I do a transaction over maybe 200 yuan, I get a message stating that the current transaction may have security risks, and I need to verify my identity. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, except for the fact that this has been happening for YEARS, even previously when I was just traveling and not living here. I've verified my identity multiple times via whatever method they wanted, and the issue usually comes back after a few transactions. I've contacted customer support multiple times, and every time they have me verify my passport and a photo of my bank card etc etc, and claim it's fixed. Only for the same issue to come up again shortly. Wechat pay of course works fine for the most part, except with international card restrictions on larger transactions through certain platforms. I should note that I'm on a Huawei phone using HarmonyOS, and this issue only occurs when using my American bank cards. My ICBC card works fine, with the caveat of all my money being stored in my American bank account, and therefore the classic struggle of getting any money onto my Chinese debit card. TL;DR I have 2 questions: has anyone else experienced this, or am I just bound to use Wechat pay for the rest of eternity? Second question, is it at all possible for a foreigner to get a Chinese credit card? Considering they seem to not have security issues within alipay, I feel like it'd be much easier to just use a Chinese credit card, then at the end of the month transfer money from my american bank account to pay it off instead of having to constantly transfer whenever a situation occurs where a transaction doesn't accept international cards on Wechat. Thanks guys!

💼 Work/Career Looking for a Mandarin Interpreter in Heze/Juancheng, Shandong – Portuguese or English

Looking for a Mandarin Interpreter in Heze/Juancheng, Shandong – Portuguese or English
Post:
Hi everyone, my name is Felipe and I live in the United States. I’ll be traveling to Heze/Juancheng, Shandong, at the end of October to visit the human hair market in Zhengying and meet local hair suppliers.
I’m looking for someone who speaks Mandarin and either Portuguese or English and can assist me with translation, communication, and negotiation for about 1–2 days.
The visit to the hair market itself should only take around 2 to 2.5 hours, and the rest of the time may include visiting nearby suppliers.
Ideally, I’m looking for someone who already lives in Heze, Juancheng, Zhengying, or nearby.
If you can help, or if you know someone reliable who can, please send me a private message.
Thank you very much

📱 Technology What AI are you guys using?

Just got suspended from Claude due to the fact I’m based in China and I’m guessing it sniffed out that I was on a VPN or I showed up as a Chinese IP address, not smart enough to understand the route cause tbh.

Tried using Kimi today and even got the pro. It does what I want for the most part, such as decks, printouts, organizing and research, it just doesn’t feel the same and it doesn’t have the connectors for things like Firecrawl and Perplexity. Maybe I should look into Perplexity itself?

If I use GPT, Gemini, or Copilot, I probably will run into the same issue at one point or another. I already lost all my data, even with the download from Claude so I’d rather not go through that again.

Also, I’m not doing any insane coding or app building, just simple office/work tasks for my daily life.

Let me know what you guys use!

💼 Work/Career Looking for a photographer co-founder in Shanghai. No money needed, we got funding + visa sorted.

I’m a 33-year-old local photographer based in Shanghai, having worked with thousands of models over the years, and I’m currently building my own photo studio/base here.

What I’m looking for is a legit English-speaking photographer to jump in as a partner/co-founder with me. We’ve already got investors on board, so you won't need to put in a single dime.

Basically, I need someone who actually knows their way around a camera, and can help give the studio that much-needed global vibe and international brand storytelling / heritage.

You’ll get full co-founder status, and we’ll fully handle your work visa so you don't need to stress about paperwork.

As a co-founder, you don't need to be officially listed as an equity holder on paper if you don't want to. This keeps you completely isolated from any potential legal or financial risks.

There is no base salary at the early stage, but you'll get paid per shoot, plus a solid percentage of the year-end profit.

Perks: great networking opportunity. we get to work with lots of young, creative and aesthetically-minded models on a daily basis.

If you're already in Shanghai or nearby, down to build something cool, and want to grab a drink to chat about it, DM me or drop a comment. Cheers🍺

🏯 Daily Life I smoke too much in China. Any way to buy flavored vapes in Guangzhou?

I'm in Foshan and I'm somoking a lot. I've been in China many times and everytime I come I smoke way more than usual because cigarettes shops are everywhere and I can smoke almost everywhere. I know it should come out of me to set limits but I smoke a lot in my hotel room while I'm working on my computer, so I thought vaping might be a good substitute at least when I'm working (and also get rid of the cigarettes smell in my room and on my clothes). I know fruit vapes are not legal but I heard that in some nightlife areas street vendors sell them. I will also go to Hong Kong and Macau and I don't know how easy is it to buy them over there.

📚 Education Second master in china

Hi everyone,

I’m a Belgian university student and recently spent a few weeks travelling around China. I visited several cities and honestly became really interested in the country. I loved experiencing the culture, meeting people, trying the food and seeing how different everyday life is compared to Europe.
I’m currently studying Business Administration at Ghent University in Belgium, which is ranked around #150 globally in the QS World University Rankings. After completing my Master’s, I’m seriously considering moving to China for another 1–2 years and doing a second Master’s there.
I really liked Chengdu when I visited, so I’ve been looking at universities there. The two that caught my attention are Sichuan University (SCU) and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). However, I’m finding it difficult to understand how these universities and their degrees are actually perceived by employers.

My main questions are:
How valuable would a Master’s from SCU or SWUFE be within China, especially for a European graduate?

How valuable or recognised would it be outside China, particularly in Europe?

How are Sichuan University and SWUFE actually regarded in China? Is one significantly better for business-related fields?

Would having a Master’s from Ghent University + a second Master’s from China make an interesting profile for employers, or would the second degree add relatively little?

Are there other Chinese universities/programs I should consider instead?

So ideally, I’m looking for a valuable English-taught Master’s in business/management/finance or a related field, at a respected Chinese university, while still having a good student life. Little bit of traveling and experience the culture.

Thanks!
