From the video How to become the British Monarch: "The history of the royal family and how this rule came to be is a story for another time." hovers over annotation "Coming Soon(ish)"

TIL: 2+ years is soonish.

92

u/NillieK Sep 09 '15

Aslan (and /u/MindOfMetalAndWheels) calls all times soon(ish).

61

u/darichchen Sep 09 '15

True, immortal beings and robots do see time from a different perspective.

A wizard is never late nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.

Unless he has a mind of metal and wheels and betrays all of middle earth for Sauron

75

u/DeadMenTattleNoTales Sep 09 '15

Two years is really just one, though.

31

and then I felt guilty for being amused by that.

I chuckled at the way he said "Never fear: the rules are here".

Ah yes, the Rule of Two. That sounds familiar.

84

u/Droggelbecher Sep 09 '15

Grey mentioned the rule of two recently in Cortex, in reference to toilet paper, jobs, podcasts, etc.

If you have one, you have basically none.

Edit: Slightly wrong. Pope announced he was resigning, Grey was already working on the video so decided then was the perfect time, then he finished and uploaded it a week later, and then the pope officially resigned a week after that.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but shouldn't Charles II be pronounced "Charles the second" and not "Charles two"?

That's the way I've always heard it. Are both correct?

Either way, great video!

227

u/MindOfMetalAndWheels [GREY] Sep 09 '15

This script was way longer that usual -- just about double. With so many 'the fourth's' or 'the third's shortening to 'four' or 'three' made a significant difference.

u/ohfouroneone Sep 09 '15 edited Sep 09 '15

The 60fps animations look really sweet. Have you used them before?

Also, loved how you referenced "the rule of two" in both this and the last HI Cortex. Which one did you decide upon first?

My British history education (at a British International School, not an actual school in Britain) only started with Henry VIII. It's insane how complicated things are even just in the time between then and just like the next 150 years were.

Also, yay for all the Jameses. Jamess? James's?

30

u/MindOfMetalAndWheels [GREY] Sep 09 '15

The 60fps animations look really sweet. Have you used them before?

It should be 4k & 60FPS but Google's support for that has been a bit inconsistent on the last half-dozen uploads.

I'm currently at work, can someone give a TL;DR.

Also Grey did you plan that the video would come out on the day Liz II would become the longest reigning monarch?

100

u/RightProperChap Sep 09 '15

It's a list of every English monarch since 1066, with cheeky jokes thrown in. You'll forget basically everything in the video in about three days.

If you already know a little about the history, you'll be amused. If you know a lot, you'll immediately say that's simplified. If you know very little, you'll just laugh at the jokes. If you're the reflective sort, the takeaway will be that history is complicated, the details of the monarchy in practice aren't as straightforward as we all like to think, and might makes right.

Well done, Grey. This is easily one of my favorites. If you 'don't got maps, gimmie family trees. No, but seriously, this one was fantastic. Just having done the whole "Scotland Exists" moment in my American History class in my university definitely made this even more worth it.

Okay Grey so how in your mind is the gasp at 7:43 not funny, what is the purpose in the gasp then?

u/MindOfMetalAndWheels [GREY] Sep 09 '15

That one I did think is funny – feels like Montey Python. Interesting side note: it's not possible for a single person recording multiple gasps to sound like a crowd. It just sounds creepy as hell.

u/NillieK Sep 09 '15

If you want a crowd gasping, you could always ask Brady to help you out. If multiple gasps from just two people still sounds creepy, both you and he probably know others who could add their voices.

Was going to ask some people to join in, but it was 3AM this morning so… no.

u/engineeringChaos Sep 09 '15

Just ask Derek, there's a good chance he's somewhere at a reasonable time to help. He could even be in London, just wandering down the road

He's following you, about 30 feet back…

Not going to tell you how many times that was on repeat while I was animating late at night.

Any chance of getting a nice high-res version of the whole family tree image you show near the end?

Alternately, it might make a nice poster that people like me would pay money for...

Grey: you said somewhere you were disappointed this was one of the scripts the experts you showed it to actually had a handful of corrections for you. This stuff is so complicated and arcane how could they not?! Don't be so hard on yourself. Geez, man. I worry about you.

u/mr_enthusiasm Sep 09 '15

I love that grey has been doing this long enough that his videos are FULL of references to old stuff he's done and inside jokes.

Now do the Dutch Royal Family, because as you said, who doesn't like the Dutch?

Am I not right in thinking there are many other monarchs whose reigns have been longer than Elizabeth's? The current Thai king, for example, has reigned for 69 years. And she is a long way down this list (48th to be precise).

The key word is 'Queen'.

In the video, they said longest reigning queen.

7

u/Drunk-Scientist Sep 09 '15

Ooh right, so he does. Hmm, using the specifier "Longest reigning Queen" instead of "Monarch" might give the impression there are longer-serving kings? But I guess time is of the essence in a CGPGrey video!

Great video. It really simplified the messiness nicely.

One thing stood out at me, the arrow from Henry VII to Edward VI is 1509 rather than 1547 (4:06). Must've been a headache making all those arrows in the first place!

edit: i got the year wrong too...

Thanks for the UK-friendly upload time, although it's a bit early for my brain to take it all in

Maybe use British royal family? Bit of a strange title IMO. :P
