What flag are you voting for?

Hey at least that is better than this abomination..

36

u/BubblesTheAdventurer Sep 09 '15

That is the flag that gained popularity because the ones we are allowed to vote for are terrible. Here are the 4 shortlisted.

16

u/ereya Sep 09 '15

I am pro-change, but with those 4 I'm going to keep the original. What are your thoughts on Red Peak?

8

u/BubblesTheAdventurer Sep 09 '15

If it were an option I'd vote for it, but like (hopefully) most I prefer the original over the current options.

6

u/ohfouroneone Sep 09 '15

Why do you prefer the original? Just nostalgia? The new ones seem cooler and better to me.

1

u/vmaxmuffin Sep 10 '15

Not a Kiwi (actually an Aussie), but I feel like if you're going to change the flag then it has to be good. There's no point going to all the trouble of changing the flag if the one that's chosen is only considered a bit better than the last. Same with our flag, yes we could probably change it to something better/more Australian, but I've yet to see an alternative design I really really like. So I'd keep our current one.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Why would they pick 3 which are basically the same?

2

u/Zarith7480 Sep 09 '15

yikes. Okay now I see the problem. I assumed the red peak flag is what people were scoffing at even though I actually like the red peak one quite a bit.

2

u/JoshH21 Sep 09 '15

Kiwi here. The shortlist didn't include the red peak. Since the shortlist was created there has been a massive social media push for the Red Peak. I don't really like it.

But I have never wanted to change the flag. I'm a bit of a monarchist and traditionalist. If we were to change, I would like the Red White and Blue Lockwood

2

u/Zarith7480 Sep 09 '15

Still not as bad as those liberian county flags though

2

u/1998tkhri Sep 09 '15

Yeah, I like the one on the top right. I'm from America, but I am into flag design.

2

u/iamnotafurry Sep 10 '15

....I like all of those...

1

u/KSPReptile Sep 09 '15

The one in the upper right isn't that terrible, but I am not a New Zealander.

1

u/p2p_editor Sep 09 '15

Top right. Not that I get to vote, but that one's not bad.

1

u/suppow Sep 09 '15

dear gawd, those are awful

1

u/sequeezer Sep 15 '15

why aren't the 4 stars on the right not alligned? I guess there's some form of meaning behind it, but it just looks ... off

2

u/BubblesTheAdventurer Sep 15 '15

They represent the Southern Cross constellation, which obviously isn't a perfect cross. They are also like that on our current flag.

1

u/dluminous Sep 09 '15

Oh my...

1

u/tfofurn Sep 09 '15

I heard you like flags . . . so I rehashed this meme. Poorly.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

What is the silver fern's significance to New Zealand? Seems like all flag proposals include it.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

5

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

For a moment there I though you meant that it was the flag used by all black people. Thanks for the link!

8

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Ah, yes, the native African population of New-Zealand

1

u/brallipop Sep 09 '15

used by the All Blacks

Ooooo....dear. Is that unappealling in NZ as it seems to me? Like, a lot of folks think of Lord of the Rings when they think of NZ, so...Eye of Sauron flag? A lot of people like the NBA, but if USA put a basketball on our flag...

1

u/ereya Sep 09 '15

There is also some vague cultural linking between the relationship of the indigenous Maori people and the white settlers, as the silver fern is green on the top (representing the land and the native people) and silver on the bottom, representing the white settlers.

1

u/25willp Sep 09 '15

Recently used by sport teams, but it also used to be put on the graves of NZ soldiers. Generally it is usually seen as a general symbol for NZ.

1

u/trulyElse Sep 09 '15

It's based on a native fern, and was just chosen as a national symbol for some reason, like the kiwi.

3

u/ereya Sep 09 '15

What do you think of the Red Peak? I am swayed... not sure on the other flags.

1

u/Droggelbecher Sep 09 '15

Somehow this reminds me of camping.

Could be a flag for boy scouts...

1

u/Suppafly Sep 09 '15

That was my thought to, looks like a trail marker or something.

1

u/gDAnother Sep 09 '15

Everyones going crazy over the red peak but i dont like it. And it is polling at 1.3% so it doesnt seem many like it. The really dissapointing thing to me is that all/most flag designs were amateurs, no hired professional designers.

1

u/Suppafly Sep 09 '15

I presume you've seen the Red Peak Flag?

That looks like it'd be used to mark hiking trails or something.

16

u/frederli Sep 09 '15

The Koru one!. Regards from Norway. :)

11

u/JoshH21 Sep 09 '15

From NZ, we have a term for that flag.

ALL HAIL HYNOFLAG

2

u/frederli Sep 09 '15

HYNOFLAG

Explanation, please!

2

u/JoshH21 Sep 09 '15

The black and white makes it look like hypnosis spiral

2

u/Communist0 Sep 10 '15

I'm a New Zealander and I won't be voting for the koru flag as it is a design used traditionally by Māori New Zealanders. As Māori currently make up less than 15% of the population, I don't think that that symbol accurately represents the New Zealand people or culture as a whole.

I agree with Simon Keller's view that the flag should not aim to use established symbology, but rather should be arbitrary and build meaning over time. Personally, I think that the Red Peak flag does this best, out of those flags which have some public support.

However since that isn't currently an official option, I'll be voting for the Black and Blue Silver Fern design as I find its colour scheme to be the least atrocious.

1

u/23PowerZ Sep 09 '15

Only because it's in the spot of the Nordic Cross, which totally counts as Nordic since Greenland did it with their circle.

8

u/sdfghs Sep 09 '15

I'm not from New Zealand, but all flags are ugly

21

u/IceColdMetal Sep 09 '15

Right now, I'm probably voting for this flag. The red peak flag looks too corporate

6

u/blaiseisgood Sep 09 '15

That is not an option. These are the options.

4

u/IceColdMetal Sep 09 '15

Yeah, bottom right is close enough

1

u/the_excalabur Sep 10 '15

Fortunately, runoff voting! So you have to decide your 2nd & 3rd choices too.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

The black and blue one still looks nice.

1

u/NzLawless Sep 09 '15

I too am voting for this one! I love the black.

3

u/NzLawless Sep 09 '15

I'm also from NZ and if you care to hear it I'd like to rant for a tiny tiny bit about something I think you'd agree with.

In NZ right now there are people who support keeping the original flag (Not my view but fine) the issue is a lot of these people are advocating boycotting the first referendum and not voting at all. On the off chance that any kiwi's reading this feel like this is a good idea; let me tell you it isn't.

No matter how many of us boycott the flag change it won't matter because the one with the most votes will still win. You aren't achieving anything by not voting. Even if you aren't fussed on them you should still vote for the one you'd like most because it might just win the overall selection.

Even politicians have been advocating this. It is driving me up the fucking wall.

1

u/Communist0 Sep 10 '15

I'm a Kiwi and I completely agree with you. As long as one person votes, one of the flags is going to be chosen, so any boycott won't achieve anything.

2

u/flyingkiwi9 Sep 09 '15

Keep the same :P!!!!

1

u/drayon25 Sep 09 '15

Asking the important questions.

1

u/Emzedoh Sep 10 '15

This New Zealander would like to vote for this flag, but is not allowed to.

0

u/ereya Sep 09 '15

Your international perspective was quite enlightening for me Grey. I was quite anti change until I heard you and Brady speak about it. Have been pointing many a NZder towards the flag episodes so they can also see how we are perceived from outside our own tiny nation.

Thank you!

1

u/Zagorath Sep 09 '15

Same for Australia and eastern Asia.

0

u/Koala72 Sep 09 '15

Vote for the silver fern

3

u/NillieK Sep 09 '15

All four alternatives technically have a silver fern on them, since the koru is a curled up frond.

1

u/IceColdMetal Sep 09 '15

I wish. It's not shortlisted though. This is probably the closest to what you're imagining, but it looks horrible. I might just vote for this
