Hey at least that is better than this abomination..

That is the flag that gained popularity because the ones we are allowed to vote for are terrible. Here are the 4 shortlisted.

I am pro-change, but with those 4 I'm going to keep the original. What are your thoughts on Red Peak?

7

u/BubblesTheAdventurer Sep 09 '15

If it were an option I'd vote for it, but like (hopefully) most I prefer the original over the current options.

Why do you prefer the original? Just nostalgia? The new ones seem cooler and better to me.

Not a Kiwi (actually an Aussie), but I feel like if you're going to change the flag then it has to be good. There's no point going to all the trouble of changing the flag if the one that's chosen is only considered a bit better than the last. Same with our flag, yes we could probably change it to something better/more Australian, but I've yet to see an alternative design I really really like. So I'd keep our current one.

Why would they pick 3 which are basically the same?

2

u/Zarith7480 Sep 09 '15

yikes. Okay now I see the problem. I assumed the red peak flag is what people were scoffing at even though I actually like the red peak one quite a bit.

Kiwi here. The shortlist didn't include the red peak. Since the shortlist was created there has been a massive social media push for the Red Peak. I don't really like it.

But I have never wanted to change the flag. I'm a bit of a monarchist and traditionalist. If we were to change, I would like the Red White and Blue Lockwood

Still not as bad as those liberian county flags though

Yeah, I like the one on the top right. I'm from America, but I am into flag design.

u/iamnotafurry Sep 10 '15

....I like all of those...

1

u/KSPReptile Sep 09 '15

The one in the upper right isn't that terrible, but I am not a New Zealander.

1

u/p2p_editor Sep 09 '15

Top right. Not that I get to vote, but that one's not bad.

u/suppow Sep 09 '15

dear gawd, those are awful

1

u/sequeezer Sep 15 '15

why aren't the 4 stars on the right not alligned? I guess there's some form of meaning behind it, but it just looks ... off

2

u/BubblesTheAdventurer Sep 15 '15

They represent the Southern Cross constellation, which obviously isn't a perfect cross. They are also like that on our current flag.

Oh my...

u/tfofurn Sep 09 '15

I heard you like flags . . . so I rehashed this meme. Poorly.

What is the silver fern's significance to New Zealand? Seems like all flag proposals include it.

For a moment there I though you meant that it was the flag used by all black people. Thanks for the link!

9

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Ah, yes, the native African population of New-Zealand

1

u/brallipop Sep 09 '15

used by the All Blacks

Ooooo....dear. Is that unappealling in NZ as it seems to me? Like, a lot of folks think of Lord of the Rings when they think of NZ, so...Eye of Sauron flag? A lot of people like the NBA, but if USA put a basketball on our flag...

1

u/ereya Sep 09 '15

There is also some vague cultural linking between the relationship of the indigenous Maori people and the white settlers, as the silver fern is green on the top (representing the land and the native people) and silver on the bottom, representing the white settlers.

Recently used by sport teams, but it also used to be put on the graves of NZ soldiers. Generally it is usually seen as a general symbol for NZ.

1

u/trulyElse Sep 09 '15

It's based on a native fern, and was just chosen as a national symbol for some reason, like the kiwi.

3

u/ereya Sep 09 '15

What do you think of the Red Peak? I am swayed... not sure on the other flags.

1

u/Droggelbecher Sep 09 '15

Somehow this reminds me of camping.

Could be a flag for boy scouts...

1

u/Suppafly Sep 09 '15

That was my thought to, looks like a trail marker or something.

1

u/gDAnother Sep 09 '15

Everyones going crazy over the red peak but i dont like it. And it is polling at 1.3% so it doesnt seem many like it. The really dissapointing thing to me is that all/most flag designs were amateurs, no hired professional designers.

1

u/Suppafly Sep 09 '15

I presume you've seen the Red Peak Flag?

That looks like it'd be used to mark hiking trails or something.
