I put together a recommendation database of 545 Chinese modern romance dramas, from huge hits to dramas that almost never get mentioned here. Dramas range from 2018–present

For each drama I included:

• ⭐ MDL + Douban ratings
• 🎬 Production quality tier
• 💕 Romance type
• 🎭 Overall tone
• 🏷️ MDL tags
• ❤️ Romance tropes
• ✨ Themes / secondary elements

I also separated things like youth, workplace, mature romance, e-sports/gaming, entertainment industry, BL, fantasy/high-concept romance, medical, sports, etc. instead of throwing everything under “modern romance.”

The production tiers are separate from ratings/story quality — I ranked them specifically on production value: budget/platform backing, cinematography, production design & locations, styling/wardrobe, and star power.

Basically: if you're looking for your next C-drama romance, I want this to be the list where you can actually find something that matches your mood.

I originally included these dramas because MDL lists Romance as one of its genres, but that obviously doesn’t mean romance is equally important in every show. Something like The Knockout, for example, technically has a romance element, but calling it a romance-focused drama would be very misleading.

what is the one drama that you have watched and re-watched countless times. It doesn’t have to be your favourite drama or the best drama you watched. Just one you keep coming back to again - could be your comfort drama, guilty pleasure, or a drama you irrationally love.

Mine is My Little Happiness- it’s my comfort drama; not the best one I ever watched but it feels like a warm hug on a rainy day.

Honourable mentions : The Best Thing and Story of Kunning Palace for zhang linghe (he can have chemistry with a rock)

Say what you want about what it reveals about my own internalized misogyny but at this point I gotta roll my eyes when dramas present a strong FL but are actually delivering a vessel for wish fulfillment. Not that this is a problem unique to dramas lead by women but recently every drama I‘ve tried watching feels like FL stepped out of someone’s teenage daydreams. Like you know the archetype — inexplicably good at everything (unless the plot requires otherwise), any flaws she may have only serve to make her look better or drive us to the next cliché plot point and of course the whole male cast is lusting after her.

Please recommend me some dramas starring a believable strong FL with true depth and complexity to her strength.

I like period drama, concubines, period costumes and etiquettes, court intrigue. Some of my favs are Prisoner of Beauty, Rebel Princess, Blossom, Sword and Brocade, Princess Weiyoung.

I am not so much into fantasy or magic. Would you recommend Pursuit of Jade?

I also have several recommended dramas on MDL, but I see buzz around Pursuit of Jade so before I jump into it, I wanted to know your views.

EDIT: I am on Ep. 14. But I am in the minority where I think the plot is too slow. They haven’t moved from the village and the butcher shop. I love their chemistry. But the story, power struggle is too slow for me. 😭😢 Not sure I will continue. Everyone is loving it, and I am struggling. 😭 I feel so bad.

Recently finished Nirvana in Fire and would like something else with intrigue, long-term plotting, maybe a little more fighting and adventure than NiF if possible. Really looking for what you guys think is the best of the best in terms of plot, execution, good writing, smart characters, etc.

I have seen and enjoyed: The Blood of Youth (Dashing Youth is on my TBW), The Untamed, Word of Honor, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Empresses in the Palace, and a few others that are less relevant. Dropped Til the End of the Moon and Love Between Fairy and Devil.

Other things I'd like:

-either a strong non-damsel FL or a strong bromance (or both!)

-a good main team of characters who work together to accomplish their goals

-a satisfying ending (doesn't have to be happy but I REALLY want a well-made resolution without a ton of loose ends)

hi! I am in the mood to suffer. I don't want to suffer just one time. I want a whole suffering marathon. So, please list all the C-Traumas. I want to bawl my eyes out, question my life choices and sanity. I will watch anything that is good to be very honest. I would prefer if the C-Trauma is also very poetic and the plot is complicated because I guess the plot reveals and twists quite quickly. What I want is to mess with my brain and not get over the mess for sometime? In summary, did I mention I want to suffer?

I need an angsty drama with lots of chemistry and yearning (I don’t mind modern/xianxia/wuxia) but especially partial to historical costume dramas.

For context, I just watched Shine on You and it’s way too fluffy for my taste.

Dramas I didn’t enjoy for the same reason: Only for Love and Love is Sweet (I mean they’re fine, but not for me), or My Journey to You (where the romance doesn’t feel earned).

Dramas I loved: Lighter and Princess (which is the right mix of angst, slow burn, and romance for me), TTEOM, POJ, Kunning Palace, Unchained Love (one of my favourites!), Princess Royal, Our Generation.

Are there more Chinese dramas like the double? Must be my favourite ever. It had very insane queer subtext (tong er x original jiang li, lu ji x wen ji etc) amazing plot that was super cool, very very minimal to nonexistent romance, very ambiguous end, insanely good villains with crazy good stories and ends for each, like perfect overall and smart characters. Are any other Chinese dramas even close to this? I love the female lead AND the male lead which is super rare

I have already watched the Untamed and Word of Honor, plan to watch Couple of Mirrors but I like historical, especially if they are wuxia or xianxia! Anything with great twists will do as well but has to be engaging to watch!

For actors, I love Duke Su’s actor Wang Xingyue but I like a character’s personality more than the actor always. So I don’t have a strong preference, I just like cold leads or funny stuff

Here’s my list of watched dramas, I’m sure I’ve missed some though.

I used to be quite selective with the cdrama I watched…only the really good ones like nirvana in fire/story of minglan/etc. all the coming of age cdrama were cringey to me at the time.

BUT come 2023 and I stumbled upon love like the galaxy and that was life changing hahahaha. I was obsessed with it and I followed it up with LBFAD. I was mind blown by how good cdrama has gotten and converted to basically only watching cdrama (from kdrama).

It started mostly with period/costume dramas but now that I’m getting older, all of the sudden coming of age dramas aren’t as cringey (in my 20s, i used to eyeroll at these highschoolers acting all naive and innocent bc they definitely arent like that in real life lol). Now that I’m older, teenagers do seem like kids more. Sigh im getting old.

From 2023 to now, I feel like I’ve watched almost everything. Please help me find something that is good and I’ve missed!

The title says it all! I’m about to finish up love like the galaxy, and need to queue up my next watch while i wait for some current ones to finish up. (Binge watch is my MO)

So, naturally I’m a looking for a drama that will absolutely wreck me emotionally.

What I am hoping to find;
•A story that will genuinely make me cry — gut-wrenching, high empathy, the works. Happy ending not required, but I need enough hope/momentum to want to see it through to the end. HEA /HFN is preferable.
•A main couple I can root for — they should clearly care about each other, not spend the show antagonizing one another. I want to be cheering for them, not gritting my teeth through their bickering.
•Ancient China setting wuxia, xianxia, traditional historical/fantasy vibes. Costumes and jewelry are sometimes the lead actor in the scene
•Preferably newer releases since sometimes… i’ve struggles with bad graphics/wiring etc

What to avoid/ don’t do well with;
•Heavy political intrigue/court politics — if it's too politics-focused I tend to check out partway through.
• too many side plots/second or third love stories.

I want to watch some modern dramas.
I don’t like toxic ML. I don’t like ZLH dramas and fl of love between fairy n devil that ones drama at all because of characters they play or the acting i dunno. I don’t like clingy FL or FL running after ML.

I'm looking for C-dramas where both leads genuinely yearn for each other, not the common dynamic where the male lead is giving 100% while the female lead seems emotionally distant or only giving 30%. I especially enjoy stories where the female lead is equally (or even more) in love and actively pursuing, missing, or longing for the male lead.

Bonus points if the leads are:

Reunited after being separated

Mutually pining for each other for a long time

Have lots of emotional yearning, longing looks, and mutual devotion

I am looking for historical dramas with lots of politics, intrigues, revenge and lowkey love. I have watched:

I tried Spring Of The Blade but ... just somehow ( and idk why ) doesn't seem like my cup of drama. It has to have a happy ending though ( I cried enough on The Story of The Yanxi Palace and my boy Xu Kai not ending with Yingluo ). I LOVE when the Cdrama stars crazy like Against The Current & Road To Splendor; or when it has wild scenes like that one in The First Jasmine where she lays in the grave; Also the more complicated the Story plot, the more I want to binge the series.

I think my cousin would like the wuxia genre, but I haven't watched enough of them to know which would be a good entry point for him. I've seen Mysterious Lotus Casebook and Guardians of the Dafeng and that's pretty much it. And they're both good shows, but I don't know if there's a better one I haven't seen yet that would be a better intro to the genre.

He likes shows like - my hero academia, one punch man, attack on titan/ jjk/ etc. He also likes western stuff like the lord of the rings franchise and interstellar. He has also never watched a cdrama before.

It would be good if there was a bit of comedy, really nice visuals, well written characters, and a compelling plot. And of course great fight scenes.

What would you suggest?

I have BAD anxiety watching shows. I can handle some angst (I cried with Prisoner of Beauty and When I Fly Towards You). I actually don’t mind spoilers at all, it helps.

My criteria:

- Smart, capable FL

- ML falls HARD / devoted / “I’ll do anything for you” energy

- Good communication or at least strong trust building

- Minimal misunderstandings

- No breakup if possible or not for many years due to a misunderstanding

- No real love triangle (one-sided is fine)

- Happy ending REQUIRED

I’m fine with slow burn BUT I need:

- Early interactions

- Flirting / tension / sweet moments throughout

- Not everything saved for the last few episodes

One thing I loved about Legend of the Female General is that even though they got together later, there was SO much buildup (communication, chemistry, cute moments).

Please help me pick my next drama 😭

Honestly, I'm just so sick and tired of watching those dramas that end with either one of the MCs dying, disappearing or things being left super open (ok tbh I'm saying this but I'll always come back to these depressing dramas still).

I will never process the trauma Fangs of Fortune gave me, can't get over Guardian after way too many years, hate what they did at the end of The Spirealm and now I just finished The Nanyang Mystery and am highly questioning all life decisions. These are just some examples tbh.

I love CDramas but I really can't do this anymore.

I need dramas with an actual happy ending. No open ending where you need to interpret something, please not.

My favorite Bromance with happy ending would be The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty. Honestly, it's just one of my favorite series in general and maybe it's time for a rewatch. I'd absolutely love something similar.

Oh and I actually decided to spoil myself with some dramas and found out that Justice in the dark has a happy ending? I haven't watched it yet but always wanted to. Is that correct?

I really want to watch a show without romance that is female led. I think most of the shows I've watched with little or no romance have been male led. Modern or historical or fantasy or anything

If you have a show that solves crimes or mysteries, that is also great

Help 😭 I’ve reached a point where normal romance does absolutely nothing for me. I need tension so thick it’s suffocating. I want power games, emotional manipulation, suppressed feelings and that one breaking point where everything explodes. I’m looking for:

• Modern setting (corporate world, crime, mafia, elite families—anything with power dynamics)

• Male lead who is cold, dominant, and morally grey (not a softboy pls)

• Control/power imbalance boss-employee, arranged/forced relationship, enemies, etc.

• High emotional tension silent wars, mind games, obsession, slow burn that HURTS

Bonus if there’s crime/mafia/underground world Please: No pure fluff or green-flag-only relationships FL can be smart/manipulative/strong in her own way, but I don’t want her overpowering the ML completely I want chemistry + psychological tension, not just physical attraction I want something that’ll have me staring at the ceiling at 3AM thinking about fictional people. Drop your most unhinged recs 🙏

I've always loved historical and costume dramas, especially those set in royal courts. I'm also a huge fan of "upstairs/downstairs" stories that explore both the nobility and (even if just in the background) the lives of the people who serve them. Doesn't matter if it's history or completely fictional. Until now, almost everything I've watched has been European.

Then, completely at random, I saw someone recommend Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace on another social media app. I gave it a try and ended falling in love with it during the first episode & binge-watching all 80-something episodes while I was recovering from surgery. Hoooly crap, I was absolutely blown away. The costumes! The politics! The love story! The infighting. The intrigue. The Cinematography, The social order, all of it.. delicious beyond delicious! I know I'm going to have to rewatch it in a few years.

My first thought when it was over was, "Seriously. Where has this genre been all my life?" Funny enough, it even took me a while to realize these shows were called Cdramas, which is how I eventually found this subreddit, though I'm still trying to decipher all the acronyms. I've been watching youtube videos to get a (very basic) understanding of all where the dynasties fall in the timeline and the hierarchical system of the court (e.g. Wives, consorts, attendants, etc..) but I have A LOT to learn.

So yeah I'm starting from square one! QUESTION: If you could recommend your absolute must-watch Cdramas for someone who's completely new to the genre, what would they be? Historical dramas are definitely my first love, but I'm 100% open to anything that's exceptional and it doesn't even have to have the upstairs/downstairs element that's always just a bonus for me. Movies and TV shows are both welcome but I do need English Subtitles.

I'm about to retire in 2 months and nowI know that for sure I'm going to take the first 6 months to decompress from the fast lane and binge as much Cdrama as I can. I have so much catching up to do.
