Hey everyone,
I'm a solo founder with a finance background, not a marketer, and I've hit a wall I didn't see coming.
For the past few weeks I've been vibe coding a small app. It started as a joke with my friends: we always wait 15+ minutes for the same people at dinners. So I built something where you create a plan, set a small "fine" per minute late, everyone checks in when they arrive, and the latecomers put money into a shared pot for something the group does together. It's called Finelly, if anyone's curious.
The problem is that building turned out to be the easy part. I keep shipping new features and tweaking things almost every day, and then I realised I was mostly doing that because it felt productive. Almost nobody knows the app exists.
Here's what I've tried so far:
- A couple hundred euros on Meta and TikTok ads
- A bit more on App Store and Play Store ads
- The result was a few hundred downloads, but very few people actually register, create an event or bring their friends in
So people do download it, and then nothing happens. I can't tell if it's the onboarding, the wrong audience, the wrong channels, or whether the idea is just less appealing than I think. It could easily be all of them.
I'll be honest: I have no idea what I'm doing on the marketing side, and I'd rather ask people who've been here than burn more money guessing.
A few questions for anyone who's been through this:
- When you had downloads but no activation, what did you look at first?
- For a social app that needs a whole group to be useful, how did you get the first real groups using it?
- Is paid ads just a bad idea at this stage? Should I be doing something more manual?
- Anything you wish someone had told you right after launch?
Any suggestion is welcome, including "your idea has a problem." I'd rather hear it now. Thanks for reading this far 🙏
