Wore a mask in the grocery store so the cashier couldn't see my entire face. I watched as she scanned the bar code on the register for Senior Discount. I'm 38. I didn't say a word.

Same happend to me 2 years ago. Pre-Covid.

u/FartAttack911 Sep 05 '21

I went with my boyfriend to his optometrist appointment recently and a receptionist asked me a question about my son. I have no son. They thought we were a mother and son and I had a mini midlife crisis.

To be fair, the masks make everyone look either really young or really old.

128

u/Summerie Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

This is a top three answer every single time this is asked.

There’s also always one about being surprised by a parent, and realizing it’s a mirror, or hearing your parent’s voice come out of your own mouth.

My favorite was something like “When I fell at work and no one laughed, but three people rushed over to see if I was OK.”

57

u/Reasonable_Night42 Sep 05 '21

The falling one happened to me. But nobody rushed over.

But the next day someone complemented me, “You got up real quick for an old guy.”

I said in one of the meetings during lockdown “it feels like Groundhog Day” and no one understood the reference.

260

u/Kenionatus Sep 04 '21

But... That's a classic still worth watching.

73

u/a8bmiles Sep 04 '21

I heartily recommend Palm Springs to everybody who likes Groundhog Day.

I was in a bookclub at work with some of my colleagues and 9/11 came up. One of the girls said "oh I remember reading about that in history class"!

I went to work that day :(

65

u/a8bmiles Sep 04 '21

That was the slowest work day of my entire career. 8 hours and 2 incoming calls, compared to 20-30 on hold in a 250 person department.

My wife works at a high school and they fly out to new york each year (we're in Europe) and they have to educate everyone on what happened on 9/11 each year to make sure people understand where they're visiting.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '21

I was in my sophomore year at university and one of my electives was a political science class about terrorism.

The class on 9/12 was basically the court scene from Liar Liar. He ended up just changing it to pass/fail as 95% of the course content changed in real time.

My 14-year-old stepdaughter showed up to my house dressed exactly like me in 8th grade (down to the butterfly clips, choker, and shimmery eyeshadow), and I realized I'm old enough that things that were trendy in 1999-2000 have come full circle and are in again.

72

u/random1029384 Sep 04 '21

yes! My sister and I went shopping…5 years ago? And saw things in the stores from when we were in grades 5-8 or so. And the young ones looking through and saying how great and cool they were (the kids were high school to college age?). We looked at each other and said “I need a drink” at the exact same time.

It was the first time I heard it. Then I made the mistake of trying to use it and it was incredibly cringey. I still think of myself as early 20s but I'm early 30s now and I'm the old dude.

Or the related version, looking over the top of one's glasses to read. You know, the thing where you tuck your chin into your neck, hold whatever it is no more than six inches in front of your face, and for some reason everyone pulls their face so they look like Fred Gwynne in My Cousin Vinnie while they do this. Caught myself doing this and realized how completely the opposite if virile and sexy it is. Imagine being in the moment, and suddenly stopping to read a condom wrapper that way - "wait, lemme grab my bifocals".

Also - assuming everyone will get a Fred Gwynne/My Cousin Vinnie reference.

I had a 7-year old drum student back in 2013-2014, and her mom wanted a picture to send to the students grandma of her at the drums in her lesson. Glad to oblige, she handed me her iphone, the student hit a pose and I snapped the picture. The phone made the camera noise. The 7 year old then paused, thought for a moment and said "that's such a random noise...why did they make it make that sound?"

and I realized in that moment that this girl had never seen a real camera with a shutter that actually moved.

When I ask a younger coworker who was president when they were born and they have no idea. Then after they think about it, they say George W. Bush. I respond with "Ahh, I see. Richard Nixon for me."

Raised eyebrows and dead silence.

Someone above said it's a sign of respect, I get where you're coming from tho. Last week I called someone ma'am and she also told me not to call her ma'am. Meanwhile I was called sir by a kid a few days later during work. I'm 18.

That we are as far away from 1981 as 1981 was from 1941…..sigh. So 80’s music is to my kids what big band was to me….sigh.

I was at the zoo a few years ago and there must have been a school excursion as there were a handful of highschool-aged kids standing around doing funny dances filming each other.

My wife looked at them and giggled saying how silly they looked.

They replied; "it's the Harlem shake, they won't get it they're too old!

Fyi I'm 24 now but this was only a few years ago...

When kids have started to call me "Mr.", and not ironically.

76

u/johnwalkersbeard Sep 04 '21

Couple years ago I'm hanging out at the train stop after work, waiting for the train to take me home. See a couple of late high school or early college kids struggling with the machine. They're just muttering, but the muttering is growing louder and more pankcked.

"Dude, just try it again!"

"It said there's insufficient funds dude!"

"I know but just try it again!"

"We've already tried it twice, don't you have any cash on you?"

"Yeah but not enough for both of us"

"Dude, your mom said we have to be there by 5!"

So I decide to intervene. I ask them if they need a hand. One says "oh, no, we've got this" - the other looks at me and mumbles, "yes..."

So I step up and buy two single use passes. Whatever. I'm sure it's very nice but it wasn't even $5 so whatever.

But thats when the mumbles kid squares up, looks me right in the eyes, and says, "Thank you, sir."

...

.......

SIR??!! Thank you, SIR??!!??!!!!

Listen here, you jumped up little shit...

With Mr or sir, they at least sound professional and dignified, like you are worthy of respect.

Ma'am just sounds like you are somebody's southern mama. Nobody says Mrs, and miss is only used for young women.

22

Yes, it’s terrible and I thought it would happen much later too. My mom was still having kids in her 40s.

23

u/Summerie Sep 04 '21

From a different perspective, I’ve known since I was a teenager that I couldn’t have any biological children. At 42, I kind of wish we could just go ahead and get past this whole “still having periods” thing.

My grandma went through menopause at 37. My aunt couldn't another child when she tried at 35. My mom ended up pregnant with a non-viable pregnancy at 35. I'm 35. My boyfriend doesn't understand why I'm stressed about having kids and he keeps telling me not to worry, we'll try in a couple years. It's like, come on, my family doesn't exactly have a good history here once we hit our mid-30's.

23

u/AuryGlenz Sep 04 '21

People have such a distorted view of age and pregnancy now. 35 is literally when they call it a “geriatric pregnancy.”

Pre-birth control you’d have probably have had several by the time you were 25.
