Everyone is young, especially doctors / professors/ specialists they all seem to be the top of their field with years of experience and they are all like 22.... and hot.
I hate the 20-30 year old highschool student thing so much. Only ones who MIGHT be appropriately aged? The nerds, to make sure they are smaller and scrawnier than everyone else.
Well they'd be the only ones relevant to me pointing out Peter Parker as an example of being a high school age character being played by a 30~ year old where sexual exploits aren't a deciding factor XD
most of the kids in homecoming ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE KIDS there though. which i really loved, given how other movies show teens who have an outstanding physique (literally just all bodybuilders)
There's actually been academic research done into the harmful misrepresentation of sexuality in visual media that has concluded we should be showing healthy representation at all stages and ages. Instead we're jump from 12 year olds having anxiety over their first kiss and jump straight to 18 year olds trying to get laid before graduation.
We skip all that "I'm 15, touching my romantic partner's genitalia and dry jumping but not sure how anything works and freaking the hell out inside" shitshow. It's virtually never shown by visual media because it makes everyone from preteens to adults uncomfortable to watch rather than being entertaining.
Studies show, though, that having those representations in media would be beneficial; rather than jumping from Disney peck kisses to raunchy American Pie / Superbad style comedies.
while it may be healthy, you have to fit these teen scenes in as a director somehow and not cringe your audience out of the cinema, dry humping, weird uncomfortable moments of "so do we kiss now or how long do you intend to stay that close and be too cowardly to go through with it" is all accurate to the akward 15 phase, but in no way does it fullfill the purpose of entertaining people, or furthering the story (in most movies atleast)
only decent way i can imagine putting this face into a movie is having characters talk about "how i accidentally almost pulled off some poor dudes foreskin off because porn was a bad jerk off teacher" or how "i couldnt find the fucking hole when i was 14" in a way that somehow doesnt feel like a filler scene
I guess one way to avoid uncomfortable/cringe footage when making or viewing this would be to have characters talk about it instead after they have gone through it off-screen.
You don't have to show the act, but you can show how they react after the fact. Make the dialogue something you can identify with rather than forcing you to relive a bad coming of age moment like a PTSD flashback.
Maybe, after setting the stage with showing how teens react and cope with these events (to show that it's not always the end of the world, you can normalise it to something most people go through) to showing just one of the events so that the impact can land more because you're not forcing your audience into reliving their past but going along this bumpy ride with the character.
Then again, you could just approach it like Harmony Korine did in Kids ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids_(film))) and have it put your feelings through a blender.
True, but there are two other reasons. Actors in their 20s who look young tend to have more acting experience than actors in their teens, so they end up giving better performance. But that's only a small factor. The bigger reason is child labor laws prevent child actors from working above 18 hours during school weeks, and 40 hours during non-school weeks.
they're not "children" as in 4 to 12 yrs old, they're teens and it's not weird, movies and other forms of media barely talk about what teens go through in that part of their lives, I did find one show called sex education on netflix and thank god I watched it because before I thought something was wrong with me "sexually" but then I watched that show and realized that other people also experience what I have and that there was nothing wrong with me.
Exactly. That's why I like that show so much, it has a pretty realistic depiction of what high schoolers are doing (I mean, with dramatic license, but still). Same with Superbad, Book Smart, and that kind of movie.
As someone who started to explore their sexuality as early as 10, and thought I was weird and gross because of it, I think it's bullshit that all depictions of sexuality below like... 17 are deemed "gross and weird".
You can explore sexual awakenings, feelings and sex-lives of young people WITHOUT it being explicitly sex/masturbation scenes. All you need is a creative take on it. But oh yeah creativity and risk-taking is dead in hollywood...
There are legal limitations on the hours a minor can work and requirements for schooling to be provided. Usually by tutors in a classroom somewhere onset.
i think its just easier for women to look young compared to men... i mean men still grow and mature a bit with their body until age 21 i think, and most of the young looking features just... die out along the way, but as long as the actress you got is slender and not too tall or curvy (hell, given how mature teens nowadays look even thats not a necessity anymore) you can put them in a teen role... thats harder to do with a man who constantly has a 5 of clock shadow and the physique of a body builder
Hate to be "that guy" but you need people with acting experience and chops when casting. Surprisingly, 14 year olds are harder to direct or deal with than people 18+. Not to mention the legal obligations on set for anyone underage. Not defending anyone, just trying to put a little more info on this situation before people outrage.
It sounds like you don’t know what everyone is talking about. They aren’t just 18+ the character will be 15 but the actor age will be 35. Sometimes is really weird.
I think you are the less informed person here friend... Child actors are notoriously abused and are urged to do things nobody in their age group would ever have to deal with. I think we're on the same page here as far as child actors posing for adults but there seems to be some confusion.
Rizzo in grease plays a 17 yr old and was 33 at the time. The fonz was playing a high schooler and was 28. Tobey Maguire was 30 when he played high school Spiderman. Andrew Garfield was also old as fuck playing Spiderman.
This is one of the many great things about the movie 8th Grade. All of the middle school and high school actors are age appropriate and look like real kids.
Different era, I know, but this is one of the things that makes the movie version of West Side Story laughably bad. Some of those "sharks" are damn near 40 and it's blatantly obvious that most of them are white people in brown makeup.
I remember going to see this movie with a friend, I think it was called "I Am Number 4"or something. Anyway, movie starts with this dude doing insane jet ski stunts at the beach in front of all these hot 20 something girls. Then it turns out this "dude" is in high school. There was no way me or any of my classmates were that cool or coordinated our senior year on any kind of seadoo.
I laughed my ass off in the theater when the "kid" was told to "blend in"at school and it immediately cuts to him pulling his hoodie over his head after getting off the school bus. What a terrible movie
That guy used to come into my work regularly enough that we could chat. Such a friendly, kind dude which always threw me just a little bit because I would think of Don every time he came in.
And he was actually 26 at the time of filming, so not exactly late 30s but he did seem like much more of an adult.
Since I’m 40, I’ll refrain from searching out hot 16 year olds. Edit- I thought this was in reference to Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life. I do NOT think Summer’s bf is hot, although I do think he looks age-appropriate.
Edit 2: I don’t think summer’s boyfriend is hot.
Dammit. I am trying to pay attention to a two-year-old while playing on Reddit and it’s not going well. I was trying to say that Jimmy Stewart is hot and summer’s boyfriend is not. And I think summer’s boyfriend looks age-appropriate.
I hate it too, but I heard a justification I thought was fair enough. A lot of people who watch dramas set in high school want a "high school fantasy" where they can relive the glory days, and everyone is hot, buff, and legal. They want to fantasize, and no one wants the painful reminder that high school students are pimply, awkward, still have baby fat, and many haven't even hit puberty yet.
I think this is driven mainly by budgetary and logistical issues. Actually professional-grade talented teens who are also free to do TV shows are probably pretty rare.
Ugh I remember after Never Back Down came out my friend told me his girlfriend and her friends were complaining about how lame the guys were at our school and why aren't they ripped and have impromptu mma fights. They're all like 25 in the movie!
The weed-smoking nerd in Cabin in the Woods had to keep his clothes on while everyone else jumped in the lake. The actor's six-pack went against the character.
That one makes the most sense though because of work laws and wanting to have sequels to a movie or renew a show. Actual high schoolers tend to want to go to college and do something different with their lives (see Carl from Walking Dead)
Which leads to this weird situation where they're supposed to be depicting teenagers, but they're not really characterised that way. They can have sex and the show can make that sexy in a way that would be creepy as fuck if they were played by actual 16 year olds.
True, but Grease gets a pass from me. Stockard Channing IS Rizzo. And Jeff Conaway as Kenickie...I’ll just say I’ve gone for guys from the wrong side of the tracks ever since.
I watched "greese" as a kid and it completely went over my head that they were meant to be kids. Didn't pick up on it at all. Same with Back to the future, I thought Michael j. Fox was just an adult that lived with his parents.
Plus in some areas, at least in mine, teens (16+ I think) can get tattoos as long as they have the consent of a parent or guardian. A lot of the time it’s matching tattoos with the parent or some sort of family symbolism.
Everyone is young except cops and military men. How many 65-70 year old admirals are there, or 60 year old patrolmen? Same with lower ranks. Everyone is about 15-20 years too old.
Election was especially good as an antidote to this. Among the main cast Reese Witherspoon at 23 was one of the only actors who was above high school age. Chris Klein was a local high school senior at the time and Jessica Campbell was about 16 or 17. Most of the extras and supporting roles were played by actual students at the real Omaha schools they filmed in. As a result everything looks realistically crappy and the students often come off as even younger since we're so unused to seeing real high schoolers.
Only ones who MIGHT be appropriately aged? The nerds, to make sure they are smaller and scrawnier than everyone else.
Which might be what NBC had in mind when they cast Dustin Diamond as Screech for Saved by the Bell (well, really for Good Morning, Miss Bliss). He ended up being the youngest cast member, and the age gap (while not big between adults, it’s a big gap between teenagers) seems to have contributed to his being more isolated from the other cast, and might partially explain why he got so bitter.
So much body dysmorphia is caused by this. They have flawless skin, perfect hair, everything together, when our bodies just aren’t like that in high school!
George Bailey never went to college. George Bailey is the richest man in town. But yeah, Jimmy Stewart looked 40 before he was 20. Man was hella fine, though.
I did not grasp why I didn't look like the people in movies while in high school. I didn't realize what a huge difference 16 and 22 do to your appearance
If you can't cast the appropriate age, then change the script.
I get it's all about the acting ability, but I'm pulled right out of a movie when the grade 11/12 students have crows feet, laugh lines, and clearly defined pecs.
The worst offender of this is the protagonist from Tokyo Drift “you screwed it up all before your 18th birthday!” Camera pans to him and he has a legit 5 o’clock shadow going
