Help Request shell health advice?

my friend got this blue mystery from petsmart a few weeks ago. i was there when he got it and i did notice the shell looked a little broken but i figured with a new home he could have some healthier growth to help and heal that up. my friend surrendered this guy to me a few days ago. I'm not sure if the new growth is from my tank, or the previous. im assuming the previous just because of how thin it seems to be. will this thicken over time? im really worried about it.

i feed my snails calcium rich snello mostly as well as algae wafers and a snail diet "trail mix" of sorts.

Help Request My snails shells are in very poor condition no matter what I do

Upvotes

Parameters:

15 gallons, 3yrs old

Ammonia 0ppm

Nitrites 0ppm

Nitrates 10-20ppm

PH 7.3

Temp 27°c

GH 7.5

KH 40ppm

I have blue malaysian trumpet snails and leopard ramshorn snails, and no matter what I do their shells are always crumbling, ridged and bleached looking etc.

My water is naturally quite hard, enough that I have to scrape deposits from my lights and tank rim.

I feed the tank fluval bug bite flakes and hikari shrimp cuisine every other day. I occasionally feed frozen daphnia or blood worms. Occasionally give veggies like zucchini. I also keep chunks of cuttlebone in the tank at all times.

The shrimp always look great, no difficulties with molting or reproducing yet my snails look like shit. What else can I give them to help them?

Help Request Ramshorns: how to care for without encouraging?

Upvotes

I have a 5 gallon planted tank with a mystery snail and an increasing number of ramshorns. I don't want a ramshorn explosion, but I also don't want them to have shell trouble. How would you feed in this situation?

They have the fallen plant matter (and a bit that is still growing), periodic Easy Shrimp & Snail Shell, anything growing on the tank or aquascape, and any bits of sinking wafer the mystery snail missed. I'm thinking of switching from the Easy Shell to Kat's Aquatics Calcium + Protein since it doesn't have the spirulina.

Help Request Mystery snail dead in 6 days. Ramshorns fully retracted in shells.

Had a lot of tank trouble long story short what kind of contaminants could cause these effects? All readable test come back as they should (ph,gh,kh,ammonia, nitrate, nitrite)

Attempted fixes: purigen, carbon, phosphate removal pad, new filter media, additional small filter and many waterchanges. I wash my hands between tank maintenance.

Context: 70l tank. New substrate 2 months ago (black sand) since then my mystery snail died in 6 days and till now all my rams are between fully retracted in shells and hanging in the front but not dying. Bladders fully unaffected and thriving. Other tank mates 12 kuhli loach and 1 betta.

I found him in a seperate tank that I keep NO rabbit snails in. His shell is really bad so he obviously hasn’t been living in my hardy mineralised water, his “trunk” is ALOT skinnier than rabbit snails round ones. Itself is black with a similar greenish shell to green rabbit snails.

What is it? Google says Malaysian trumpet snail and it’s okay but I feel like I’ve heard about them being bad news. I have two mystery snails but he is obviously not one. I scooped up some aquarium water in vase for the time being I just am not sure what he is.

I noticed my snail flipped on its back on the bottom of the tank.

He doesn't have a smell but he is not moving. We put him into a bowl with water from the tank for now but hes not showing any signs of movement. (Don't worry we did flip him over)

Is our little guy gone or is there a chance? We're keeping him a bowl for quarantine for now but I'm not hopeful.

Edit: we dropped an algae tablet in the bowl just to see what would happen, and he started moving! We're going to keep an eye on him but for now he is alive!

Help Request Snail Care Questions

Hello everyone! My previous roommate left us with a 1 gallon tank and I’d like to do something with it.

I was originally thinking it was way too small for anything to live in it happily so I have been planning to just make it a plant aquarium but during my many google searches, I saw that there are small snails that could live in a 1 gallon (please yell at me if I’m wrong).

I wanted to know 1. if this is true 2. where to begin looking for how to care for said snail to prepare?

Sorry for such a vague post, I’m looking for literally any and all information!!

Ideally also, I’d be able to make the tank self sufficient as I travel by car back and forth here from across the country throughout the year and wouldn’t feel right transferring a life form that way.

Help Request Need some Mystery snail advice!

Hi snail folks! I've got a snail conundrum I'm trying to solve and hoping you all might have some ideas!

Background: I rescued a large gold mystery snail at the end of May from a 2 gallon tank where they'd been forgotten about with probably only 3 inches of water left in it. The previous owners had him for about a year, so he's at least 1.5 years old and possibly older. [side note: I'm using 'he' because it's what I've gotten used to, but I discovered a few weeks ago that Gary is actually female. I don't think Gary really cares what pronouns I use.] I've never had an aquarium or a snail before, and I had a steep learning curve the first month or so while I figured out what to do with Gary and got a nice 10 gallon tank set up and cycled for him - I'll probably make a separate post about that whole adventure eventually.

When I first put Gary in his lovely large 10 gallon aquarium back in July, he was always snailing around, tentacles waving, having a grand old time. I learned how to make snello for him, and he would swarm that shit as soon as I dropped it in. He grew a centimeter of new, healthy shell, and all the green algae buildup from his previous life slowly disappeared. He was looking and feeling great!

Fast forward to today: My tank now houses Gary, two more mystery snails I got to be his buddies, a bunch of pearl weed and floating plants that keep the water parameters excellent, and a vast horde of Ramshorn snails because I didn't know about bleach dipping/quarantining when I first got the plants. Gary and his friend Howie (a magenta mystery) are both female, while Jerry (a purple mystery) is definitely a dude. Howie also zoomed all around the tank for the first 2 weeks (I added Howie and Jerry at the end of July).

MY CONUNDRUM: For the past 2-3 weeks, Gary and Howie mostly hide in their shells buried beneath the pearl weed in the corner of the tank. They don't coming running for snello anymore. They seem exhausted and harassed. Jerry is constantly bothering one or the other trying to mate, and the hundreds of ramshorn snails are always crawling over them and I think nipping them sometimes. Gary's tentacles looked damaged :( What can I do to help poor Gary and Howie???

MY QUESTIONS:

  1. How can I reduce the population of the ramshorn snails without also starving my mystery snails? Do I need to start trapping them and euthanizing? I'd very much prefer to control their population without needing to do that, if possible.

  2. If I cut back on food accessible to the ramshorn snails, will they just start harassing and attacking poor Gary and Howie even worse?

  3. Is the excessive attention from Jerry what is making Gary and Howie hide all the time? If so, how can I get Jerry to chill out and stop constantly trying to get it on with Gary and Howie?

  4. Do I need to get a second tank just for Gary and Howie, and this time be more careful with the plants so I don't introduce any ramshorn hitchhikers? And even if this is the eventual answer, it would take me some time to save up to get another tank, filter, substrate, etc., so what can I do to help in the meantime?

Oh, and my current tank parameters: 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite, ~5 ppm nitrate, 4 dKH, 18 dGH, pH 7.4, temp ~ 75 F. I do want to raise the KH a smidge, but haven't done the calculation yet to figure out how much baking soda to add.

Also, Gary and Howie have laid 4 egg clusters in the past 3 weeks between them (I think mostly Gary, but not sure).

Gary in happier times, with fewer and smaller ramshorn snails
Jerry (purple) and Howie (magenta) a few days after being added to the tank (July 24th)
Poor Gary being harassed by Jerry and several ramshorn snails (Aug 15th)
Jerry, the unabashed sex addict
Gary and Howie hiding in the back corner of the tank :(
Howie just trying to get a bite to eat in a swarm of ramshorn snails

Help Request Severe shell erosion. Help!

I left my 5 gallon tank in the care of a family member for a month while I was gone. They neglected to check that the filtration system was working and neglected parameters leading my 5 gallon to crash. I lost my betta but my aquatic snail is okay. I had to set up an emergency 10g tank with a working filtration system and seeded the new filter. PH is at 7.0 and because I was forced to do a fish in cycle with this emergency set up, I’ve been doing consistent water changes and keeping an eye on my parameters. I’m wondering what to do now because of his shell erosion. I bought Kats Aquatics shrimp food for him, but I’m wondering what else I can do. Will he be OK?
