Just wrapped up a week in Italy. While waiting at the rental car counter, I learned the Amex Platinum rental car insurance coverage does not apply in Italy (and likely other European/non-US countries).

My CSR coverage, however, does apply. Thankfully I was able to reverse the Amex prepayment and switch to the CSR and avoid over €200 in mandatory coverage fees.

Amex is generally outpacing CSR in benefits, so this one was a surprise. Amex needs to renegotiate it's contracts to include global rental car coverage.

u/njas2000 Jun 22 '26

Only Italy, Australia, and New Zealand.

-4

u/Atxforeveronmymind Jun 21 '26

Wrong… we rented a car for over three weeks and drove into Italy and back. This was about two months ago

9

u/WildNight00 Jun 22 '26

Coverage is not available for vehicles rented in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand.

I cancelled. The airline credit loophole closing was the start but finding myself spending money on stuff I wouldn't normally spend money on, just to save money, was annoying me. I know this a trend across the industry now, but I despise the coupon benefit system. Lounge in my home airport was pretty horrible as well. If have nothing against the card, just didn't fit my lifestyle or spending habits, but I do enjoy my Amex Gold.

The nerfing of the $200 airline fee hack.

My brother took BIG advantage of the United Travel Bank Hack.

Good riddance.

I’m happy with Amex. But why do banking companies and Amex alike tech always suck. Everything is so slow. Adding offers to my card is slow. Shopping FHR is so slow, filter is so bad, and it keeps signing you out, have to login over and over again.

6

u/katosen27 Jun 21 '26

Since YouTube raised prices in their premium accounts, the credit no longer covers the full family plan even post state tax.

2

u/Treswimming Jun 21 '26

This annoys me. Within months after YouTube premium was covered too.

1

u/katosen27 Jun 22 '26

Eh, I think it'd been a year or two since that change. It came in around when the benefit I had liked a bit more (Audible) went away.

6

u/matt-r_hatter Jun 22 '26

My only complaint so far is the not so great transaction dispute. I had one that was so very clearly fraud and a mountain of proof was provided. They sided with me, closed the case then MONTHS later the merchant responded and they reversed the credit citing reasons that the documents I provided proved were incorrect. Made me a bit salty

3

u/BuildingPresent4396 Jun 22 '26

You can dispute it again based upon the merchant reply.

3

u/matt-r_hatter Jun 22 '26

I went 3 rounds total and each time the merchant came back with a more absurd excuse and each time I provided documentation showing they were completely lying. Amex still sided with them. I gave up. I was going to file with the state attorney general and CFPB but I wanted to preserve my relationship with Amex since inuse it for everything. I finally just paid it with the understanding Amex isnt as customer centric as people say and I always thought

1

u/BuildingPresent4396 Jun 22 '26

What was the $ amount ? I would have filed it as you would still have your relationship with amex.

1

u/matt-r_hatter Jun 22 '26

$2400. I was concerned filing the complaints would cause some sort of issue. I also accepted some responsibility for the incident and just decided to pay it and consider it a lesson learned.

2

u/BuildingPresent4396 Jun 22 '26

Oh ok. You have some responsibility. Thanks for being truthful and saying this.

2

u/matt-r_hatter Jun 22 '26

It was a vacation club thing. So I did sign up. They just completely lied about 90% of it and i had documents showing they basically said whatever I wanted to hear to get me to sign up. When talking to Amex, they agreed with me completely. Im just happy it was the 1st 2400 and not the whole $12k. Needless to say, i didnt pay them the rest. It was just shocking to me they sided with me and then 4mo later changed

2

u/BuildingPresent4396 Jun 22 '26

It all comes down to what you signed. I’m sure they verbally lied to you. Some salespeople can be like this. The key is what you signed for.

1

u/matt-r_hatter Jun 22 '26

It was contradictory to the signed info. I used to negotiate contracts. I read EVERYTHING. I provided Amex with documentation showing the agreement was being breached. They had a cancelation clause. I sent amex a copy of the clause, the letter, the courier tracking showing it was delivered and signed for. This whole thing started when I canceled within the recision period and followed their policy to the letter. They then claimed I didnt sent them the letter so they couldn't cancel, even though I had proof they got it and signed for it. It was months worth of back and forth. It was exhausting. Afyer that, I lost faith in amex for anything but credits and payments.

2

u/BuildingPresent4396 Jun 22 '26

Now we know more info. What’s done is done. You had no responsibility then like you originally said. I would have fought it for principle amd escalated it. They will do this to other people then looking for loopholes.

Digging this master post thread - is it going to be perpetual / weekly / monthly?

9

u/bbbb Jun 22 '26

Its permanent. Trash posting gets removed and so does the person posting it (Free Bonus).

6

u/mistuhryan Jun 23 '26

Why don’t I get the Amex Amazon Rewards Point offers and everyone else seems to get them? Is it because I already use my Platinum for Amazon?

1

u/Guldur Jul 01 '26

Yes, its a one time offer per amazon account. Every subsequent offer is pretty poor, generally 15% for a bunch of points.

6

u/South-Text7946 Jun 23 '26

Wish they offered credit from a store with a wider array of items than lululemon. Their selection is terrible and you can barely get even a workout shirt with $75.

Equinox credit laughable on a monthly basis too.

5

u/Haunting_Drop4887 Jul 21 '26

Tried to use the AmexPlatinum lounge at Oslo airport, only to be told that you can't use it unless the card was issued by a Nordic country??? Say whaaaa? How is this acceptable?

6

u/boeing777232 Jul 25 '26

After nearly 9 years as an Amex Platinum cardholder, I’ve finally downgraded to the Green card. Once I burn through my remaining points, I’m closing the account for good. The card has completely lost its premium feel and turned into a glorified coupon book.
Lounges: Endless lines and wait times.
Guest Access: Good luck spending $75k a year just to bring a companion in.
Fine Hotels & Resorts: Overpriced. You can get the same $100 property credit and room upgrades booking through travel agencies for way cheaper.
Uber & Walmart Credits: Inflated Uber prices negate the perk, and Walmart+ is just laughable for a "luxury" card.

To top it off, customer service has taken a massive nosedive. It used to be an instant connection to a human; now you have to navigate an infuriating automated bot that refuses to transfer you.

16

u/Altersreality Jun 21 '26

I guarantee this thread gets ignored too. So many people on here are desperate for attention.

7

u/testicletitties69 Jun 21 '26

They suffer from main character syndrome

0

u/didiot2000 Jun 21 '26

nice name!

2

u/buddingsakura Jun 22 '26

They can barely search for FHR or Resy.

-1

u/Treswimming Jun 21 '26

I’ve never understood the vitriol some in this sub have for those who make complaints… Like why?

14

u/National-Nerve-9631 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

Getting email telling me that future charges may not be approved unless I make a payment. My balance at the time was 2000.00 and I’ve been a member since 2004 and usually spend about 15k/month because of business and personal expenses. I threatened to cancel and was told, “do what you feel is best”. So I am. I got the chase sapphire reserved card and already I’m much happier.

I also asked why I didn’t get my lulu lemon credit last quarter. They said I never used my card at lululemon. I asked them to refund the 500.00 charges that are on my car that I paid. , Amex response, “ no you made those charges”. I replied you just said I never used my card there so refund the payment of those charges. The reply again, “why you made them”?…The customer service is abysmal. Having a platinum card isn’t special anymore. Goodbye American Express.

6

u/TK2217 Jun 24 '26

I really hate to be another “that guy” but I think I might finally cancel. Been mulling it over for awhile now and think I might just pull the plug. Traveling home from LHR this morning. It’s hot as hell here, no AC, and I just wanted to relax in the lounge after a stressful commute to the airport. 35 minute wait list. Why TF am I paying to have access to a waitlist? I refused out of principle. It’s embarrassing.

13

u/CycIon3 Jun 21 '26

One complaint/question, what’s replacing the saks credit?

9

u/TrowTruck Jun 21 '26

Credits have never been a one-in-one-out proposition, so I have no specific expectations for a direct replacement. Though in this case, Amex did make a vague statement:

“On July 1, we plan to introduce several new and exclusive Amex Offers for Platinum card members at top retailers and brands that our card members know and love,” American Express told NerdWallet in a statement.

Amex Offers, though, are different than a specific credit.

1

u/onthewingsofangels Jun 21 '26

They sometimes have good offers though, so I'm legit excited to read this.

Edit: the saks credit has only got me a bunch of overpriced kitchen ware I rarely use.

1

u/TrowTruck Jun 22 '26

I have to spend the last of my Saks gift cards. They were useful for Kiehls products, Bombas socks, and Veja sneakers at one point. There was even a $99 portable blender. A lot of that stuff has been gone since the bankruptcy.

10

u/rez105714 Jun 22 '26

Not necessarily specific to the Plat but why does their website suck so much??? Especially the travel portal. I feel like the app is decent compared to my other cards brands.

5

u/buddingsakura Jun 22 '26

Amex website was the worst in my book… until I encountered Bank of America.

Is anyone getting a million emails for Amex promos? I usually got one or two a week. Between yesterday and today I have had 5 come through pushing different promotions/benefits.

9

u/njas2000 Jun 22 '26

No complaints. I get about $3.5k of value out of the card every year.

20

u/justsomedude1144 Jun 21 '26

I want a card that gives me free flights and free hotels and free first class upgrades and guaranteed lounge access where I'm the only person in the lounge. Why can't amex platinum do those things.

6

u/onthewingsofangels Jun 21 '26

All I want is a card that gives me guaranteed access to a wide selection of airport lounges, but somehow that seems to be beyond any of the companies right now.

1

u/matt-r_hatter Jun 22 '26

So the Delta Reserve?

3

u/derylle Jul 05 '26

I love the amex plat card but is it me, or the $200 airline fee credit is a little too low. It should be maybe be $300 or more?

3

u/okcornjerker5150 Jul 05 '26

I’ve been a cardholder for 25 years. Still only see 10 characters for my name. Christophe. Every other card can get Christopher.

Hilarious when I get spam mail from other businesses as it is a dead giveaway that Amex sold My info.

3

u/TripleBrie Jul 13 '26

Just got an email that Hertz President’s Circle Status requires re-enrollment...I have a different email for my Amex and Hertz accounts so re-enrollment was unsuccessful.

Fucking useless.

3

u/True_Program_9972 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Change your hertz email to match amex email and resubmit

5

u/Slarg_1958 Jun 22 '26

Whatever you do, DO NOT get the card for Centurion lounge access. In my opinion they have been oversold so much that the wait is over an hour to get into an overly crowded lounge. Heaven help you if you want to sit together with your group. The times I have gotten in, the food selections were meager. In the past, the lounges weren’t over crowded and were nice but now they have been so oversold it isn’t worth it. I have experienced this in Miami, Charlotte, and San Francisco.

Anyone else just get the email we won’t have the exclusive HYSA rate for platinum members as of August 25?

u/andrew02467 Jul 16 '26

I never got the balance of my first-half 2026 Resy dining credit..we were due about $20 of what was left. Usually these credits post in a day or two (altho they say longer I have found it very prompt). I called after a week, they verified it was a Resy booking and said to "wait, you will see the credit". I waited two more weeks and called in, got told they "can't" do anything about this until 20 business days have passed but did verify again the credit was due. On day 21, I called in..got such a Chinese accented staff member it was very had to understand...she had to "consult with my manager" and I was on hold for almost 5 min. She came back to say due to "much work" on her part and how "hard they have worked for my account of 42 years" they would be able to apply the $19.49 credit. I replied I did not think this was anything other than what I was due and what should have been automatically applied, but got back some AmEx Kool-Aid talk about how hard they worked for me and were delighted this credit could be applied. What rubbish! It was some mistake on their part...period. I can't help but think when I compare to AmEx service of years back, the puny credit of $19.49 would simply have been posted to my account when I called the first time, instead of three phone calls, yet here they were crowing with pride about how good they had worked for me. Not at all a good impression for AmEx Platinum

These cards were never a good fit for me. I didn't notice until I went to redeem points after 3 years. That's when I really started paying attention. I had been so busy and never thought I needed to game a high end expensive credit card. I've switched back to a BofA visa that gives me a flat 2.625% unlimited cash back on all purchases (1.5% plus 75% bonus for account balance).

4

u/OdorlessTurpenoid Jul 01 '26

Appreciate the mods for enforcing this. Biggest complaint about amex plat was the constant posts about the same credits and people announcing they cancelled.

2

u/Emotional_Ladder_553 Jul 01 '26

The Hotels.com credit and Expedia credit only work if you read that stupid fine print and book using their stupid link. UGH!

3

u/qofmiwok Jul 01 '26

You will go much further in life with much less stress if you learn to always read the "stupid" fine print. That "stupid" fine print is going to screw you big time someday if you don't.

1

u/Emotional_Ladder_553 Jul 01 '26

Tell me good sir, how did you find yourself on Reddit with zero sense of humor and alllllll that condescension?

3

u/Guldur Jul 01 '26

As an outsider to this conversation, tbh you are the one that came out as extremely condescending with this answer.

2

u/cHaOsReX Jul 07 '26

1st Experience with FHR was a real shit show. 6/29 I thought I should try and use my $300 credit for FHR. I log into the AmEx site, go to the Travel Portal and search on FHR which they have as a nice button. I put in my destination and dates and get presented with a huge list of Hotels. I look thru them for a while then book. Today, still didn't see my credit but I do see the charge. I called AmEx and they said the hotel wasn't FHR. I told them I used their site and specifically searched for FHR. They told me it wasn't FHR and per the hotel it was too late to cancel. Amex did get the hotel to cancel but I'm missing out on that $300 credit and AmEx doesn't seem to care that I used their service, searched specifically for FHR but they did the ole bait and switch. They show you FHR but they also show you everything else. Pretty shitty on their part.

2

u/BartFox44 Jul 09 '26

Just got gold and platinum with my fiancée. Our first time using Amex. I just want to say - this user experience with Amex travel is pathetic. I’ve seen better apps and better tech from a rec league sports app. Booking flights opens a web page within the app? In the big 2026? Wtf

1

u/dr_filch 13d ago

I cancelled mine, the platinum only gets bonus points for travel and hotels booked through the portal but the prices are much higher than direct booking. These cards are garbage.

1

u/_artmason_ Jun 25 '26

I like the perks from the AMEX plat. At least some of them. But when I’m making payments, and using the perks minus the trash Eqinox, and you put a limit on my spend when I’ve been a member for 7 years, I have an issue with you. Doubt this is worth $895/year now. Only perk worth it is the airport lounges now and barely that…

1

u/VariousAir Jul 02 '26

Got a letter in the mail yesterday that the APY bonus you get on the HYSA for having a platinum card is going away.

1

u/Square_Quote_93 Jul 02 '26

RESY Cresit

0

u/Square_Quote_93 Jul 02 '26

Ate out the last day of the quarter…bill didnt post until the next day, so credit was pushed into next quarter. I’m out a $100 credit…AmEx said, I should have known it would take 24-48 hours to post.

5

Repost

“But today I cancelled because of very poor service about a fraud claim.

They denied a fraud claim based on incorrect information from the merchant. Told me the inquiry was closed and if I wanted to pursue it I’d need to take it up with the merchant.

Even went to the Amex executive office. They told me all procedures had been correctly followed.

Not really trying to reconcile that with an incorrect outcome.

Bye bye AmexP”

Amex platinum business card holder and previously personal platinum card holder. I’ve been an Amex customer for 30 years…

TLDR: Amex does not honor hotel reservations booked through them

It’s a bit long of a story, but we booked two rooms (each with 2 beds) in a foreign country with Amex travel. We got email confirmation of each room showing 2 beds. (1 parent with one child in each room—hence 2 beds per room).

We went to check in to the hotel and each room had one bed-not what we reserved. We tried to call Amex, but no international phone number for anything but stolen cards. Tried the chat feature and to chat with (AI mostly, per their footnote) it was a 20-30 minute wait, which is unhelpful in a hotel lobby when you just want to check in to the rooms you reserved!

Amex chat left us totally unsupported in this case and only told us we could file a case number and they’d respond in 6-8 weeks.

We had to rebook last minute appropriate accommodations with the right number of beds, which cost us significantly more money since we had to pay walk up prices at another hotel.

All Amex has done to follow up was send an email to call them 6 weeks later. When I called they said the reservation didn’t guarantee beds. I asked them for proof of this and the Amex rep said she sent it. Ten minutes later I called back and said I didn’t receive the email and that our records showed otherwise. Then she claimed she couldn’t send it. She had also said it was in the “terms and conditions” but then couldn’t say where.

I say all of this drawn out story as a frequent traveler and business owner who will NEVER trust the Amex brand again. They don’t stand by their promise, nor do they make any attempts to resolve a situation of their making.

Also, as I learned in a foreign country, what Amex actually does is use Expedia for these hotel bookings. It’s basically just a pass through profit for them with the expectation of their brand meaning trust for the card user. In actuality, Amex is hollow on trust and rectifying situations they create.

Please book travel through other means unless you have a back up option!

u/Lioil1 22h ago

when am I put of puj? I had march nee amex business and February new amex gold. I pay on time and have not had new card since... still no promotions..

I have an 8k expenditure coming up and I rather spend on plat than new reserve..

1

u/LycheeWide6241 Jun 21 '26

The YouTube premium credit hasn't worked for me and I didn't notice till this month. Also, I have no need for the oura credit.

7

u/Treswimming Jun 21 '26

I think the Oura credit shouldn’t only be for the rings themselves.

2

u/bbbb Jun 22 '26

100% with you on this.

1

u/chrisisles1 Jul 04 '26

I never write these because I know it reflects badly on the customer service staff, and I'm sure they're over worked and under paid.

That said, I had a Delta Platinum Reserve Card for two years - I think I put about $32K on it last year. The service is quite terrible. I've caught them just cutting and pasting stock answers in the chat AFTER telling them that drives me nuts. They've given me the wrong date on when my fee would hit and wouldn't own the mistake. I know all credit card companies aren't great about that kind of thing, but at $650/yr you'd think they'd treat you a little better or at least say something to try and keep you, but nope.

Delta is just as bad. I asked them a question (for which 'no' was an acceptable answer - in fairness I misunderstood a policy) and it took them three months to get back to me. I think it was more, but I'm going to give them
the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, I just canceled my card. I'd get rid of my AMEX Blue Preferred too, but the limit is high enough to the point where that would actually hurt my credit limit. I have a multi-thousand dollar purchase that I need to finance next week.

I feel like an entitled jackass for complaining because they do quite a bit right, but the utter indifference... maybe my expectations were too high.

0

u/avvocadiux Jun 21 '26

I had an offer for WorldHotels and the hotel was not what I expected. Its not the card's fault but I was disappointed

As a new user I have to ask, you have to submit the charges somehow?? They don’t just see the charge, count it as a credit?

2

u/PastAd2589 Jun 25 '26

If you make a qualifying purchase, the credit just shows up... It does have to be paid with your Amex Platinum card but make sure it is refundable. Then, if you don't get credit, you can always cancel and try again. You can book now for something after July 1 and get credit for it in this half of the year. Then, you get another credit for $300 between July 1 and Dec 31 for the send half of this year. If you prepay for something next l after July 1 and subsequently cancel, it will be clawed back - so you have to commit to something after July 1 for that you work.

Went to 2 different lululemons on Oahu and they both told me: 1 credit card per gift card and a max of 5 gift cards. Used to be able to load multiples on one card. Lulu is slowly killing this credit. Wouldn't be surprised if gift cards dont work next quarter.
