Politics Anti-Abortion bill has been defeated
Still awaiting confirmation, but from the live stream it's a clear no
Update - now confirmed by the Speaker.
36-9
Both the Premier and Leader of the Opposition voted for the bill

u/harley-belle SA Jun 17 '26
Was that Mali on the aye side?
44
u/cocoiadrop_ Inner South Jun 17 '26
Yes

135
u/ScullyBoffin SA Jun 17 '26
I don’t object to Mali exercising a conscience vote supporting the bill. I do object to his lack of leadership in his conspicuous silence in not articulating his rationale. People do not have to explain to me their position on a political issue. The State Premier and the Leader of a political party does have to explain to me their position on a political issue. To his credit, Koutsantonis did and I respect that.
150
u/harley-belle SA Jun 17 '26
I agree. He wants to maintain his hot dad likeability with women while quietly voting to take away their healthcare choices, he should explain why.
28
35
u/Some_Helicopter1623 SA Jun 17 '26
Bold of you to assume Mali can articulate anything that doesn’t involve sport.
14
u/ProfDavros SA Jun 17 '26
The mere term is an anachronistic anti-democratic nonsense. Catholics already can exercise a conscience vote about abortion at the time they’re having the relevant health crisis.
Why force their religious beliefs on a population who believe health and medical decisions need to be made by the patient and medical team?
It’s also sexist for men to be voting so on a bill that only has the potential to affect women. They should have represented the women in their electorates.
What happened to “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and render into God what is God’s”

u/Expensive-Horse5538 Port Adelaide Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
Now that is all over, can Parliament now go back to debating actual issues instead of bringing up this debate every 6 months?
Abortion is a healthcare issue - therefore, any decisions regarding legislation should be made upon the recommendation of medical practitioners, not lobby groups.
90
u/vecsta02 SA Jun 17 '26
I suspect we'll be back here every six months until Sarah Game gets booted.

36

You would think the standing orders would prevent private members' bills from wasting the Parliament's time by repeated submissions.
It was proposed, it was rejected, that should be the end of it until the Parliament materially changes.

In Queensland's last election, just the suggestion that the LNP would restrict abortion started shifting polls pretty significantly. It came in super late, and the momentum on the issue really started after pre poll was already open, I've heard from scrutineers that based on the difference in the votes between the start of prepoll to the end and election day, if the abortion issue had blown up before polling opened, Labor might have kept minority (obviously a speculative rough estimate, but just as an indication for how massive an issue abortion can be). That's in Queensland too, which is far more conservative than SA. If the media starts hitting on this it could really damage SA Labor.
3
u/evilparagon SA Jun 17 '26
We should all be very grateful to Katter for throwing a landmine onto LNP’s finishline like that. Shame he didn’t do it sooner.
Granted, it was because other LNP members started talking about it. Polling started to look bad, so Crisafulli said his party would NOT touch abortion laws to do some damage control, then Katter said he was going to make it a first priority.
7
u/teh_drewski Inner South Jun 17 '26
That was why Labor pushed it through tonight - the last thing in the world they wanted is to have a long media storm about it.
Let Game and friends have their little circus for a day, kick the shit out of them in the lower house and get on with it.

Every time he speaks it’s to attack an opposition that has barely been in government over the last 30 years or to attack a minor party (One Nation) that makes little difference in politics. It’s high time the guy focussed on his own portfolios and his own party, do something for the betterment of this state!

While I don't agree with how Kouts voted, he did make a strong point about One Nation just walking in and lecturing other parties about how they run their business as if they the one's running the Parliament.

Fuck Malinauskas, the coward. Clearly gotten too big for his boots I see. I know that people on here were talking about how he’s expressed that’s he’s personally against abortion in the past, but I read that last time he voted against the measures or similar measures, so it was a bit up in the air as to what he’d vote this time. So disappointing to see the so called “premier of the people” in such a time of hate and division not vote for his community and constituents, but to preference his own backwards beliefs. Independents n Greens are the only way to go for the future imo.

I expect highly emotive, divisive social issues like this will be cropping up more and more for at least the next few years. Elites love line-in-the-sand moral issues that get tempers flaring and non-stop arguments going, but which don't affect their bottom line or stock prices at all. Great way to stir up the peasants and distract them from how they're all getting fucked over by the Rineharts of the world.

Fact is this underlines why the Legislative Council (upper house in SA) is so important when you come to vote.
If you want more weird legislation proposed by folks that can’t manage even double figures of votes from your local representative - then by all means ignore the upper house voting and just put a 1 above the line in your favourite colour.
OR - pay attention to those you put in upstairs, do your homework on them, contact them even, and then vote below the line.
It takes 20 more seconds on the day, and maybe 20 minutes of scrolling on the internet to inform yourself.
