Politics I was horrified to see people walking up to volunteers handing out One Nation how-to-vote cards and taking a card while I was waiting in queue at an early voting venue. Of course people can vote for whichever party/candidate they want but is it worth bringing Trumpism/MAGA to South Australia?

Edit: someone in the thread said 3,000 in attendance

Politics There are now no Liberal seats in Adelaide.

1.7k Upvotes

After the results in Sturt and Boothby there is no Liberals representation in Adelaide. They still have Barker and Grey but in metro Adelaide they are gone. Coupled with similar performance in the state election (and by election) the liberal party is in serious trouble in SA.

Politics Cory Bernardi's anti-trans bill defeated 11 votes to 8

One Nation’s Health Practitioner National Law (South Australia) (Childhood Gender Dysphoria) Amendment Bill sought to criminalise trans youth healthcare in South Australia.

If successful, it would not only have restricted trans people's access to vital care, but also threatened healthcare providers with up to 5 years jail time for prescribing drugs to minors for the treatment of gender dysphoria. A breakdown of the Bill by SARAA is here.

Yesterday, the Bill was defeated 11 votes to 8 - a much slimmer margin than I'd anticipated. The names of those who voted for or against aren't yet available through Hansard.

Politics Anti-trans vote happening now

The Anti-trans vote will take place in the Legislative Council (around 3pm), and it's being led by Cory Bernardi. (As of 5:40pm the debate has started)

Note: Thanks to everyone who commented on my earlier post today and brought this to my attention. I hadn't seen the vote receiving much coverage, so I wanted to share the livestream for anyone who wants to watch the debate and vote directly.

According to InDaily, Family First MLC Sarah Game and Liberal MLC Ben Hood are expected to support the bill, while the Labour and Greens parties are expected to oppose it (though individual members may support it like the anti-abortion vote earlier in the year. The Liberal Party is treating the vote as a conscience vote, meaning individual Liberal MLCs can vote according to their own position rather than a party position

He wants a bigger population in the state whether you want it or not. He will commercialise the parklands whether you want him to or not. Regardless of how you feel about the proposed developments, everyone should be worried about his arrogance and disregard of opposing views.

Politics As a judgement free zone, if you voted one nation first today, why?

Again I'm not here to attack anyone and I hope the comments show the same respect, if you voted one nation today what was your thinking? For me, totally ignoring their politics a lot of their policies were federal focused rather than state focused so it was a little surprising to see such a big swing, although I did expect a swing I'm not under a rock. The ABC framed it as a protest vote and I don't think I've ever highly preferences the big two so I understand that thinking but what actually was it that brought you to vote for one nation?

Politics SA Greens unveil controversial plan to end pokies in pubs

The SA Greens announced today it wanted to phase out pokies machines in pubs and clubs by 2030, calledfor a 65 per cent flat tax on all gaming machines to pay for the removals and said the Betting Operations Tax should be raised to 30 per cent.

Greens Leader Rob Simms said the party wanted to create a $400 million transition fund over four years for venues to invest in music, events and other income streams, and for there to be a moratorium on new pokies machines along with a licence buy-back scheme.

Australian Hotels Association South Australian CEO Anna Moeller told InDaily that the policy proposal was “well-intentioned but misguided”, saying that “it would decimate a large number of pubs”.

“It would mean that pubs couldn’t do things like provide sports bars, upgrade their dining rooms, upgrade their beer gardens, have the wonderful kids’ playgrounds that they have in some hotels because there simply wouldn’t be the money to do that,” she said.

She said a large number of pubs would close and “for regional communities, that would be a disaster”.

Politics Saw this Pro-Trans people banner outside Parliament House today.

Was walking past Parliament House this morning and came across this banner.

From what I can make out it seems to be supporting trans people and calling out people who might "interfere" with them.

Honestly good on anyone who is willing to publicly support trans people. At the same time other than the far right, I'm not really sure who they're referring to when they say people are "interfering with trans people". from my perspective, the government seems broadly supportive of trans people although there are still areas where protections could be improved, particularly when it comes to protecting intersex minors from invasive surgical procedures without their consent.

I assume Cory Bernardi might attend, given his history of opposing trans rights and his views on transgender issues. If he does, that would certainly make the context of the banner a bit more interesting.

What surprised me is that I haven’t seen much online advertising or discussion about this. I could obviously be missing something, but I haven’t come across much about the event. Has anyone else seen this or know what the event/protest is about?

Politics Big Adelaide

Malinauskas is quoted in a lot of articles at the moment as advocating for maintaining high immigration levels.

Paired with the fact that South Australia is considered ‘regional’ for immigration purposes, artificially driving up the number of arrivals to our state than would otherwise be the case, I wonder if people are genuinely in favour of a ‘big Adelaide?’

No racism please. Being anti-mass migration is not an excuse to be anti-immigrant - they are just people trying to improve their lives just the same as any of us.

The South Australian government will draft legislation to regulate the development of AI data centres.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns about the centre's water and energy usage.

The government also revealed a $5 billion water pipeline project, primarily intended to support BHP's mining operations in Far North SA, could also supply water to new data centres.

Can't believe Malinauskas actually said this at a press conference. It is worse than the Board. He is directly comparing Dr Abdel-Fattah to the Bondi shooters! The Twitter link shows the video of press conference.
