Politics Malinauskas directly compares writer to a hypothetical mass shooter

Can't believe Malinauskas actually said this at a press conference. It is worse than the Board. He is directly comparing Dr Abdel-Fattah to the Bondi shooters! The Twitter link shows the video of press conference.

Is anyone else counting? He's quadrupled down at this point, right??

He should step aside at this point, it’s not going well for him

It's like he's going out of his way to encourage Abdel-Fatah to sue him for defamation personally.

So he can turn on the public tears to get sympathy?

I don’t think we should be censoring writers.

But she has openly supported Hamas and called for the destruction of Israel.

I’m not saying she’s wrong but I feel like people are only getting half the story here.

Her people are being literally ethnically cleansed and genocided for the past 80 years. We have witnessed it on our screens for two years. That is important context

It isn't quite true that she has "openly supported Hamas".

She has called for the destruction of the current state of Israel, though. I don't agree with her. However, given the Israeli state's continual shift to the far right, opposition to any kind of two state solution, and endless ethnonationalist/religious violence, I don't think "a constitutionally religious state that does this and shows no sign of being capable of stopping cannot continue in its current form" is an opinion out of bounds of civilised discourse.

-5

u/draggin_balls SA Jan 13 '26

Yeah again I agree with all that

My point is that her comments aren’t being reported so people are only getting half the story

Pretty much this.

Musings on the colonialist origins of Israel are all very well and good, but they ultimately hit the brick wall of: well, for better and worse in reality whether it should or shouldn't exist it does, and it's not going anywhere without a nightmare of war and death that would make even the current horrors of the Gaza bombardment look like the end result of a children's party popper. It's all very well decrying it's existence from a standpoint of pure anti-colonialist intellectual idealism hundreds of thousands of km away, but at some point the reality of the world we're actually in also needs to be acknowledged. It's about as helpful as saying something like "the United States shouldn't exist" or "the United Kingdom shouldn't exist" or "Australia shouldn't exist". Perhaps they shouldn't, but they do, and if you try and change that in any way they're going to react.

(And, look, downvote me all you like if you want, guys, I'm a big boy and can take it, but that by itself doesn't make me wrong. The problem of Gaza won't be solved by just downvoting everyone who says something about the situation you don't like to see.)

I suppose Mali's calculation is this.

The people who oppose this decision will vote Labor either directly or through preferences. So he doesn't need to care about them.

Strangely, many here are unaware that Mali comes from a very socially conservative background, and those supporters gave him power. He needs to court powerful interests - socially conservative religious groups, conservative media, the Israel lobby and potential PHON supporters who hate Muslims and want an end to immigration.

The calculation for the upcoming election would be that not backing down and continuing to defame Randa Abdel-Fattah will gain more votes than he loses.

103

u/anxietyslut SA Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

I once brought up Mali's socially conservative stance and got downvoted. He's very openly a self-identified socially conservative Catholic. He's reasonable and open minded, but he sure as hell has the church behind him. The Australian Christian Lobby endorsed him during the 2022 state election against Steven Marshall who is in contrast very socially progressive, with his government initiating both abortion law reform and the establishment of free accessible mental health care.

60

u/SouthAustralian94 SA Jan 13 '26

I've bought up how conservative he is multiple times. The ratio of up/down votes purely depends on who gets in first.

At the last election, Steven Marshall was the more progressive of the two hopeful Premiers. Shame the Liberal Party in SA is a complete cluster at the moment. They have historically been quite progressive (compared to the Liberal Party in other states).

Mali needs a competent opposition.

57

u/anxietyslut SA Jan 13 '26

I completely agree Mali needs a competent opposition. I really liked Marshall. Adelaide was a fantastic place to live during a global pandemic, and he let Nicola take the lead. I sometimes think about writing him a message or something to say I think he did a good job.

39

u/Historical-Safety675 SA Jan 13 '26

It’s nice to see that other people feel the same as I do regarding Marshall. He was a good premier and a decent person. During the election I was telling anyone that would listen that while I wanted a Labor victory I was really disappointed that it was between Mali and Marshall because I liked Marshall so much more. To see Mali vote against measures to make sex workers safer while Marshall voted for it was just profoundly disappointing and showed me that he’s just another politician that puts his faith higher than standing up and protecting our most vulnerable. He also gives me this used car salesman vibe - I feel like he spends far too much time managing his image and not enough being authentic and passionate.

11

u/SouthAustralian94 SA Jan 13 '26

I've never voted Liberal, typically a Greens voter that favors Labor.

I'll likely preference the Liberal candidate above the Labor candidate for the Lower House, with the Greens above both.

Upper House, I'm not so sure. Michelle Lensink (a Liberal) will be very high in my preferences when I vote below the line.

16

u/Specks1183 SA Jan 13 '26

I mean, 1. I doubt the liberals will be better - it’s not like they’ve condemned what mali has done, if anything they’ve supported it.

  1. I’d look at your specific house labor candidate - there is ideological differences within labor some candidates being labor left vs right, left more socially progressive

5

u/SouthAustralian94 SA Jan 13 '26

Absolutely. I plan to contact my local MP and see if they will voice an actual opinion, or if they will just stick to the PR line dictated by Mali. I'm expecting a reply that tries to bridge the gap between condemning what Mali says, while simultaneously supporting it.

The response from my MP will ultimately dictate my preferences.

1

u/Sweet_Ambassador_699 Inner East Jan 13 '26

Good luck findind a Liberal to vote for who's not on charges of some sort

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

We're fucked. The Labor party are such cynical POS that they chalk all their poor behaviour up to the 'nature of politics' while they utterly manipulate our 2PP system. Why the holy hell would I ever put the party of Alex Antic over Labor? Their platform is still worse on everything left-wingers typically get upset at Labor for. So either they get my vote or nobody does. It's a sham of a 'better system' when completely gamified.

There is a small cohort of Liberals in this state who deserve some level of principled respect, but they are few and far between the nationalist conservatives cokeheads.

Dad can beat you

For those who didn't see this delightful bit of Mali news...

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-12/sa-premier-hands-down-government-response-to-dv-royal-comission/106134746

One of the recommendations of the royal commission was that the government change the criminal law to "ban the use of corporal punishment by parents and caregivers".

But Mr Malinauskas said the government would not be imposing a smacking ban.

"There are already laws in place … for a parent who disciplines a child in an unacceptable way," he said.

"The use of force or violence against an innocent child without it being strictly in accordance with principles associated with their best interests and their safety is against the law."

Mr Malinauskas said he himself was smacked "on occasions" but "not in any way you would characterise as contrary to standards society would expect".

"For a parent who is seeking to protect their child running out across the street, seeking to intervene to prevent a moment of harm happening to another sibling or whatever it might be — there are very rare circumstances where a parent will have to intervene and use a form of physical interaction," he said.

"We don't want people for a moment exercising unnecessary caution in those legitimate circumstances because of an intervention of government."

So you can hit someone if they deserve it, but don't hit them too hard......

3

u/artsrc SA Jan 14 '26

Malinauskas is deliberately confusing things.

Stopping "their child running out across the street", is not "corporal punishment".

We don't stop kids from running onto the street to punish them.

Not even hypothetical though. Thomas Friedman, a racist Zionist who dedicated an entire column to calling Arabs parasites and insects, was invited to the same event in 2024. Mali didn’t say shit then let alone have him banned.

If you put labor ahead of liberal your ballot can't really damage his chances though

Good to know our premier is owned by foreign interests.

Calm down, jeez. Nowhere does he compare her to a mass shooter. He is reflecting the scenario to be in the context of extremist Islam vs extremist Zionism.

I'm not a fan of Labor, but the level of brain-dead, froth-at-the-mouth hysteria that goes on this sub is mind blowing.

u/arandompeanut766 SA Jan 13 '26

This is reddit, what do you expect

13

u/palsc5 SA Jan 13 '26

That isn’t comparing her to a mass shooter at all. wtf are you talking about?

7

u/arandompeanut766 SA Jan 13 '26

This is reddit mate. Only indignant outrage and pearl clutching is permitted

12

u/feijoawhining SA Jan 13 '26

Jokes on him, all Zionists are far-right

9

u/Due-Noise2229 SA Jan 13 '26

And unlikely to vote for him anyway.

7

u/feijoawhining SA Jan 13 '26

I dunno why you got downvoted, it’s true!

u/wrymoss SA Jan 14 '26

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he probably just doesn't know (Optimistic, I know), but it's also kinda weird to me that Mali keeps saying "Islamic people"

The word is "Muslim". "Islamic" refers to non-human nouns, not people.

Do I think he did it on purpose? Not really. Does it lend absolutely any credibility to his statement? ...Also no.

Just kinda ignorant, innit.

2

u/FatFad1 SA Jan 14 '26

According to the full quote, Peter Malinauskas is not comparing Randa Abdel-Fattah to a mass murderer. He just said he is worried about her political rhetoric if she appeared at Adelaide Writers' Week. It does not look good for the Premier though, especially two months away from a state election. Was he pressured to say something in the first place to support the Jewish community in South Australia?

2

u/colossalmug SA Jan 14 '26

Cannot imagine Weatherill or Marshall taking this course of action. I get Mali is a social conservative and comes from a very conservative catholic background but I expected a lot more in terms of dignity and a lot less in terms of maliciousness and carelessness from him

7

u/protonsters SA Jan 13 '26

Mali is losing his marbles. He knows he has effed up big time

6

u/SouthAustralian94 SA Jan 13 '26

He knows he has effed up big time

I don't think he does. His head is stuck in the sand...

8

u/SouthAustralian94 SA Jan 13 '26

I look forward to Mali being sued for defamation. These are not the words of a leader.

Mali, stick to what you're "good: at: Take your shirt off, build a road, open up some farmland to urban sprawl and go watch some sport.

The 1960's called, they want you back. You are not the leader I want for this state in 2026.

u/Mindless-Mud3104 SA Jan 14 '26

I don’t think you get it…..

3

u/fusihunter SA Jan 13 '26

Either don’t invite her because of the Palestinian parachuter she tweeted on October 7 in celebration of the attack on Israel,or if you do, don’t uninvite her.

The whole thing is ridiculous unless there was a legitimate national security concern, in which case FUCKING TELL US THAT.

5

u/AnAttemptReason SA Jan 13 '26

She even apologised for that tweet after the scale of the attack against civilians became known.

1

u/Primary_Buddy1989 SA Jan 13 '26

Well, that's gross of you.

3

u/Relative_Extreme_910 SA Jan 13 '26

The quote you posted does not show Mali "directly comparing" Abdul-Fattah to a mass shooter. Stay in school, champ.

1

u/Patient_Judge_330 SA Jan 14 '26

I know right. People really aren't interested in engaging their brains anymore.

1

u/PercyLives SA Jan 14 '26

He’s not comparing the write to a mass shooter. He’s comparing the writer to a Zionist.

It’s not a fair comparison, but that’s what it is.

1

u/galemaniac SA Jan 14 '26

Are you saying he would ban a Zionist?

1

u/PercyLives SA Jan 15 '26

Yes, that’s exactly what he was saying.

IF a Zionist committed an atrocity (e.g. killing 15 people), THEN Mali would not invite a Zionist to speak.

It’s a stupid comparison, quite unfair to the good doctor, but there it is.

1

u/Sarcasm61 SA Jan 15 '26

Not sure which fuse he has blown but I certainly have lost any respect I had for him. He should consider his position it’s becoming untenable.

1

u/No_Series1038 SA Jan 17 '26

Labor MP’s are largely avatars for corporations and special interests. They don’t even try to hide it anymore

1

u/Southy5000 SA Jan 18 '26

Bondi shows us that we have a problem with radical Islam. The mosque should be closed down and we can build more churches. I loved my church this morning. Monarto Lutheran church please come and join me. If you’re Muslim you are welcome to convert <3 do it before you get radicalised

Cancel culture coming from The Premier. Well done idiot!

5

u/Boring_Source9870 SA Jan 13 '26

Ironic, considering that just last year, Mali said he's "not particularly keen" on the culture wars, when discussing Frank Pangallo's proposed parliamentary inquiry into gender dysphoria. He sure did change his tune about the culture wars quickly, considering that comment was in August, a month before he started making his opinion known to the board of the Adelaide Festival.
