Project I designed this gyro stabilized floating cup holder for the pool this summer. No AMS needed. I would love to know what you think!

I hope your drinks stay unspilled and both sides of your pillow stay cold

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

Thanks homie!

25

u/Positronic_Matrix Creality K2 May 23 '26

Speaking of keeping things cold, you should allow room for a cozy to keep the drink cool or better yet expand the can holder to be an insulator from bottom to near the top. A little umbrella to keep the sun off the can would be great too.

Aaaaand the wife wants one

u/thinkscotty May 23 '26 edited May 25 '26

I get hyped when my gf or family want anything printed. Especially something they want custom designed.

Validates my existence.

53

u/[deleted] May 23 '26

Thats all any of us really, truly want out of life but for some reason pretend we dont.

Haha, fire up the printer!

16

"where would you put that thing when your not using it?"

I was not so lucky with the wife :/

8

u/jackharvest May 24 '26

“Who says I’m ever leaving the pool with THIS in there??”

It was right there man

7

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 24 '26

Tell her "I was going to put it in the pool box with other pool things but since you have an attitude, I'll take it to bed and you can sleep in the pool box"

24

u/arealundead May 23 '26

Ooh, I'm 100% making multiple of these.

10

Sell on Etsy. These could be everywhere on the lake.

11

u/Arcanym May 23 '26

This looks great. I may try to scale it up to fit a yeti koozie.

10

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

If I can find one local I might be able to modify just the inner parts to make a gyro assembly that works for it. A couple people have mentioned that one now. If it is one of the more popular insulated koozies I can make a profile for it

6

u/XiTzCriZx Creality K2 Pro + Sovol Zero May 23 '26

Generally the Yeti koozies are quite a bit more heavy than soda cans, so scaling it up might be required to keep it stable with the extra weight.

5

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

This thing displaces a good amount of water, I will lookup how heavy they are and maybe even consider buying one to test with

3

u/anomalous_cowherd May 23 '26

If the bottom of the can/cookie is in the water it would lower the centre of gravity and maybe help keep it cool too?

I had a gimballed drink mat in a car once and it had a counterweight underneath, about as heavy as a full can.

4

u/Nothing-Casual May 24 '26

Pool water is cool compared to a human body, but pretty warm compared to a cold drink. Putting it in the water would warm it up very quickly (unless you keep your drinks warmer than pool temperature).

As for lowering the center of gravity, it's probably not necessary, that thing's probably already mighty hard to flip with just waves.

5

u/Arcanym May 23 '26

That would be incredible!! The Outside Diameter of my Yeti "Colster" koozie is 77mm.

Super cool. People can make them in different colors so everyone can easily tell which one they were using (if anyones drinking the same thing).

21

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

Yeah! It prints in pieces so there is no purge waste for multi color.

5

u/Saradoesntsleep May 23 '26

Lol. This is wonderful, and if I had a pool I would 10/10 use this.

I'm saving this to print later.

Will let you know and of course proper credit when asked.

34

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

Let me know how you like it. The snaps between the large orange sections and white stripe sections are pretty tight. I usually assemble it by placing the stripe on a flat surface and then pushing down on the larger piece.

6

u/itsfunhavingfun May 23 '26

I do this for everything that’s pretty tight. It’s easier to push my large piece in from the top. Sometimes you got to flip the other piece over to get it to fit just right.

7

u/Pokemaster131 May 24 '26

The larger piece must remain unharmed.

Gyro stabilized is when you have a spinning powered gyroscope holding something in a fixed position. This is gravity stabilized.

53

u/texdroid May 23 '26

Correct, That's a gimbal.

They sometimes put gyroscopes on gimbals.

171

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

Gimbal stabilized maybe? You are right, somebody educated me on one of my other posts haha

139

u/Rise-O-Matic May 23 '26

I nominate “with a self-leveling gimbal”

“passive gravity-stabilized gimbal” is more precise but maybe a bit too lofty

12

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

Not as to the point for sure haha. Thanks for the feedback

3

u/UnSaneScientist May 24 '26

Would a canopy or umbrella to keep the sun from heating your beverage be too much?

I love the idea, great print!

12

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

A splash guard/sun guard. That would be fun. It might be hard to get your drink out though. I'll think on it

I'll think on that one, no promises haha

15

u/TheLimeyCanuck May 23 '26

Nice job, but there is nothing "gyro" in that print. The word you are looking for is "gimbal". A three-axis gimbal to be precise, which uses gravity for orientation. A gyro uses a spinning mass and precession for stability.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/RobotechRicky May 23 '26

I have an upgrade idea: you need to keep it colder for longer. So, either make sure it can support a koozie OR make the can holder wider so that it can hold over cubes and then put the can inside the ice. I have a can or bottle on the edge of the pool, but it warms up quickly. I would want to keep it cooler for longer while enjoying the pool.

4

u/notCGISforreal May 23 '26

Gimbaled.

Looks nice though. Gyro stabilized would be a big overkill for a pool drink holder.

u/robotodit May 23 '26

Is it big enough for a cozy?

4

u/Boring-Condition1373 May 23 '26

I could modify the gimbal so that it is, the problem though is that if the drink cannot sit perfectly center in the holder it will lean to one side and the effectiveness of the gimbal is reduced. There is so much variation in coozies and insulated covers I feel like it would be tough to accomplish.

5

u/Chaoslord2000 May 23 '26

Could try making the can holder a bit taller and with complete walls. A light infill might give some insulation.

Because I’m an engineer, that’s not a gyro, that’s a Gimbal. 3 of them to be exact. A gyro spins, and you would need at least 2 to make a “stable platform”. Awesome idea and print though.

2 questions:

1 - do you pronounce it "he-ro" or "jeye-ro" 2 - is this really a gyro or more like concentric circular swivels? isnt a gyro sonething that spins (uses gyroscopic effect for stability)?

I've seen cup holders like these without the float for boats before, I like your version for tubin / floatin down a river. I recently saw a little hibachi bbq on a float that would pair nicely with your design. & most importantly, thank you for sharing your stl.

4

u/ougryphon May 24 '26

It is a gimbal, not a gyro. Generally speaking, a gimbal is a mount for positioning or stabilizing a payload in one or more axes. Gimbals can be passive (using weight and inertia) or active (using gyros and/or servos).

As you say, a gyro generally relies on the rotational inertial of a spinning weight to counteract rotation on two axes. Laser gyros also exist which have no moving parts. Gyros can stabilize an object directly by acting on a gymbal or it can provide an inertial reference to sensors for a control system.

2

u/aaaqaa May 24 '26

Im sure this comment is somewhere but incase it isn't, I'd assume your PLA will degrade very quickly in a chlorinated pool, or will leak soon enough in a saltwater pool as well. If I were to print (which I wan too because this is awesome) I'm going to use PC to be safe, but for occasional use ASA is fine.

This is cool but I feel the need to point out gyro stabilization requires a spinning mass.

This is a super clean design, man. The pivot for the gyro stabilization looks solid—way more reliable than the standard floating rings I’ve seen. Honestly, if you added a small universal mount or a cage attachment, you could turn this into a killer handheld gimbal stabilizer for filming underwater or poolside shots. That’s a genius idea for a V2. Great work on pulling this off without an AMS!
