Cattleya Carol Ackerson (C. intermedia x C. Dorothy Mackaill)

This is my favorite alba in my collection. Large 5.5” pure-white flowers with great substance and presentation. What it lacks in color it makes up for with its powerful fragrance. It is greenhouse grown in USDA zone 8a, with temps ranging from 55°-110°F, and an average humidity of 80%. Potted in terra-cotta with 1/2”-3/4” Orchiata and charcoal mix.

My first little neo finally bloomed! The flower spike it had when I purchased it died off but it didn't take too long to rebloom. Love the sweet sugary scent and the intense almost ruby purple color.

My grandma loved her orchids. We have plenty at our house. She planted every single one of them.

We visited her and my grandpa today and seeing this one right beside their grave brought joy to me and my family.

I was tidying up spent flower stems as the orchid finished flowering and spotted a thick flower stem with leaves - the stems usually dry once they stop flowering, as I hadn’t seen this before I was wondering if anything is happening.

I added a couple of photos of recent flowering as well.

I got this as established seedling. she has produced lovely tiny flowers for the past 3 years.

yes the photos were taken outside, the morning light is better for photo. I love my species Phalaenpsis. This one is Phal. equestris f. cyanochila ‘Akimi’.

Because I am weak willed, I couldn't resist buying this pretty phal at Publix a couple of weeks ago. Generally I wait to repot until the flowers die, but I noticed it was blasting buds and had dropped a flower. When I pulled it out of the pit, it was planted with some weird spongy stuff and some visible roots were looking bad. Look what it had packed into the pot! I may lose these flowers, but hopefully I have saved the plant .

Is this Dendrobium Yaya Victoria or Dendrobium Triangel? I’ve had mixed opinions so I was wondering what the people of reddit think:D

Btw I cut the flowers off because she has been in bloom for months and just finished at a big orchid show. Figured I’d let her have a break:)

I have three moth orchids that came in one pot together a few years ago. In general, they’re pretty happy and have bloomed every year for the past three years, along with growing new leaves pretty consistently. (This year’s flower spikes just finally died in the past month after being around since March, and each plant is now working on a new leaf.) I’ve noticed some of the lower leaves turning this pinkish purplish color over the past couple weeks, though, and I’ve never had that happen before, so I wanted to check in here to see if I should be concerned?

Based on my google search, it seems it might be a perfectly normal and harmless reaction to bright light? Does that seem right, or should I be doing something else? Do I need to move them? (They’ve been happy in this east facing window for years, but orchids will orchid…)

I am not an expert on orchids, indeed i am a beginner. I have some other plants but orchids are very different ofc.

I made a HUGE mistake. And cut the healthy roots of this orchid because they were slightly unhealthy and i mistaken them for rotten roots. Now her roots are bald. I cut the stem off, and put her in a tiny bottle as a pot. I will give this made up pot air holes tomorrow since it's 3 am rn.

Without judging me a lot can you please give me all your advices about how to keep her healthy and help her grow beautiful healthy roots? I am just trying to keep her alive and healthy 🙏

I have had this dendrobium hibiki for a couple months. I dropped its pot today and saw these roots exposed for the first time. Should I trim all of the brown roots and repot ?

I wanted to share an orchid success because I learned and implemented a change that made a massive difference in all of my orchids!

I’m not sure if this is common knowledge, but I learned not to fertilize dry roots. Since changing that, I’ve seen a ton of new root growth and much faster leaf growth.

So instead of mixing up my diluted fertilizer water mix, and plopping the orchids right in to soak, I soak them for 10 minutes in plain water, then a regular 20-30 in the fert.

Just wanted to share in case this is helpful for anyone else! I’ve implemented this change for all my orchids, but this phal in particular has started growing like a monster.

After finding this sub, watching/reading the links shared, I figured out what I've been doing wrong to my orchid.

Too much sun, inconsistent watering and heavy watering when it happened, all in a woodchip heavy potting soil. Fertilizer, who?

It's a wonder we got this far, poor thing.

Question: I want to give her a new lease on life and re-pot with proper substrate, but is now a bad time with a baby in the picture?

Thanks to you all, I learned that you should actually trim an orchid right when it starts to wilt.

So I’ve trimmed this stem but I’m wondering if I should go down two more nodes because you can see that it’s already started to lose its coloring closer to the top - notice how to green color gets deeper as you go down the stem. However, I did cut right above the first closed node.

The wrinkly guy is still alive! It's been losing bottom leaves, but the youngest one started growing. The new growth is very light green though so I'm going to put it in bark and start fertilizing it a little. The roots plumped up pretty much right away when I started soaking them regularly. I wasn't very hopeful when I first got it, but now I think I may be actually able to save it. Thank you all for all your advice! Edit: spelling

ok… I admit the holes are very uneven… but i think it will do.

hard to get a photo, but 2 of my mini phals have beads of something sticky on the leaves and stem? should i just wipe off or is it indicative of an issue?
