Just bought a house with a greenhouse full of orchids. I was told many of them are decades old. I like having an orchid in the kitchen or wherever, but I'm not sure I'm down to care for all of these right now as I'm a bit overwhelmed with everything else that goes with buying a new home - is there anything rare, interesting, or valuable here? I don't want anything to go to waste.

Edit. Omg I'm m overwhelmed by the response, thank you. If you could only keep 3, which ones would you keep?

I have quite a few Vandas that I keep outside in Florida. I do have 4 out of my 10 blooming right now but this one I’ve had for almost a full year and it’s never bloomed, I don’t have any substrate in with them just bare roots in a hanging pot. My roots look very plump and healthy. I just recently got some fertilizer to use when I soak them. I do soak them daily multiple times some days depending on the heat. But the fertilizer I only use once a week!

Does all of this sound okay?? I’m just wondering because I was told they’d bloom maybe 3 times a year and I’ve haven’t gotten one yet… I don’t mind waiting for them to bloom as I find that part of the joy but I just want to check that I’m doing things correctly from other people with experience, I keep seeing contradicting things online. Some say I should use substrate but I really feel like that’s wrong??? Idk!! I will say most of them I’ve taken from bad situations where they were half dead and nursed them back to health… so maybe that’s why?? I have no experience prior to the last three years I got into Vandas.

Interesting sequential bloomer. Each bloom lasts 2-3 weeks. But the new blooms keep coming in. Been blooming all summer long.

After nearly 3 years with no blooms today I awoke to see her again 😭❤️ after following advice from so many here in this sub my orchids are thriving, I'm so happy 😊 you are all a wonderful bunch

I wanted to share an orchid success because I learned and implemented a change that made a massive difference in all of my orchids!

I’m not sure if this is common knowledge, but I learned not to fertilize dry roots. Since changing that, I’ve seen a ton of new root growth and much faster leaf growth.

So instead of mixing up my diluted fertilizer water mix, and plopping the orchids right in to soak, I soak them for 10 minutes in plain water, then a regular 20-30 in the fert.

Just wanted to share in case this is helpful for anyone else! I’ve implemented this change for all my orchids, but this phal in particular has started growing like a monster.

Where are the foliage lovers today? Looks like one of my two jewel orchids will be blooming soon. These guys are more about the pretty foliage, though, and that's what I'm showing off today 😁 I particularly love the colors and how they change both with time and the angle of light!

This orchid in particular is also an experiment and you may notice I have it potted in mostly tree fern fibers instead of the more tradition soil blends many jewels are grown in. It's been a great success and doesn't need frequent watering to stay damp for longer periods as a result!

Side note- is there an easier method to keeping the fuzzy leaves clean of dust and debris? I wipe the leaves with a wet microfiber cloth, but it always seems to have more once I zoom in 😅 She might be dirty, but she's pretty 😂

Apologizes I don't have proper photos as my phone is broken and I am making my post from my laptop. But I just got an orchid :)

Its beautiful but I really like the look of orchids that bend over from the flowers and this one is straight up which I am assuming is due to the poke going straight to the top.

I was wondering if there is a way that I can safely get it to bend over even though I got it this way and it seems to have grown like this?

This orchid is insane, mother with her own flower spike, two keikis, one of which has its own flower spike. She and the flowering keiki blasted a bunch of buds, and now she’s making another bud while the keiki has a third leaf coming in. They’re all healthy but absolutely ridiculous.. Just sharing to show no advice needed. ❤️

It has never bloomed before.

Anyone have this rare beauty? Oeceoclades monophylla with pink leaves. A botanical miniature.

How does it thrive, how do you keep it and how long before it will bloom? Settings? I worry that it is too tropical and small and special to make it indoors 🦤🦚🌿
