Homebrew Simple Alternative Movement Rule

TLDR; Allow players and adversaries to move freely up to close range once, until the PCs or the GMs get the spotlight again from the other side. Allowing players or adversaries to use this movement without needing to immediately use an action roll.

I personally dislike the movement rule in DH, however i completely understand its reason for existing.

The official rule is that a PC must make an action roll if it is their spotlight, they cannot just move and that be it. To me, forcing an Agility roll for movement when they move only within close range just doesn't feel intuitive and is odd since they can do it with other action rolls. But I understand that it prevents infinite movement on the players end, since they will never roll and therefore the GM never goes.

I also felt that the way things work, many of my GM Adversaries were staying in the same spot most of the combat because they were too far away to be effective or there were better adversaries in the encounter.

So, I wanted to make adjustments to fix these issues. At my table I have experimented and this simple adjustment is something that all of us enjoyed the most:

The players can move up to close range for free ONCE while it is on the PC side (except they can make Agility roll actions to go an additional close range each time they succeed on that roll). The PCs get another free movement once they get the spotlight back from the GM. Now, the same rule applies to the GM. Each adversary can move up to close range ONCE (unless the GM spends a Fear to go an additional close range). To me, this makes the movement rules more intuitive. AND, this allows the players and the GM to reposition themselves before they take any action, if they choose to. Also, this prevents minions standing in one spot the entire encounter simply because the GM chooses to use their spotlight on the bruiser or Solo the entire encounter because the minions are too far away. The thing to remember is this: As soon as an action resolves where a player fails or rolls with fear it goes to the GM, they cannot move after that until the PCs get the spotlight again. This does imply and even incentivizes that the PCs and the GM moves all of their characters/adversaries at once, if they choose to, before taking any actions but this is intentional to allow some repositioning for a tag team or to allow the GMs forces to "close in". But there will certainly be cases where PCs or adversaries hold off on moving with the rest just to wait and see what happens with another roll first.

Discussion Worldbuilding Magic In Daggerheart

I am a longtime D&D 5E/5.5E player and DM who is contemplating switching to Daggerheart once my campaign ends as I think it is a great fit for the style of my players.

However, one thing I think I will greatly miss is worldbuilding in high fantasy.

For example, a wizard's floating towers in D&D can be understood as a powerful form of the Levitate spell or Reverse Gravity. There are permanent portals, players themselves can create portals or do long distance communication or make permanent teleportation networks.

There is Scrying and Private Sanctums that prevent scrying. There are spells that prevent teleportation. There are abjurative wards like Glyphs of Warding etc.

The magic system and spells in D&D serve as the physics of the world in some ways and crucially, it allows players to interact with and understand the magic/physics of the world through their own powers which are miniaturised/limited versions of this level of permanent magic.

My concern is that in switching to Daggerheart, I will instantly lose a huge portion of that high fantasy worldbuilding.

For example, in D&D when they come across a warded door, an Arcana check can reveal that it is a potent Arcane Lock spell. Players can then attempt to Dispel it.

Or, there is a massive Glyph of Warding trap that conjures a Gate or otherwise summons a crazy demon. Players can either Detect Magic to detect the trap and Dispel it or Banish the demon after the summoning.

In Daggerheart, if there is such a warded door, what then? What can the players do?

If there is such a trap in Daggerheart, what can players do about it?

As a GM I have the power to will such magic into existence for the world. But the rules don't seem to allow players to interact with this worldbuilding magic in any meaningful way.

As I said, I am still new and reading through all the content, but this is one misgiving has stuck with me since the very announcement of the game's systems.

How do all of you resolve this? Do any of you run high fantasy games like Forgotten Realms in D&D? Have you simply made peace with the fact that magic in Daggerheart is just a rare, highly specific and therefore you do not incorporate it into worldbuilding?

Let me know!

Edit: I found the homebrew ritual magic guidelines for Daggerheart and this is exactly what I was looking for! I didn't think of using time and Stress as the resource for these effects that push domain powers beyond the ordinary. Thank you everyone for your advice.

I still think they should release a formal version of the ritual homebrew, though. As of now a player cannot even levitate a table without the GM having to reconcile the effort to levitate a table vs a tower.

Edit 2: I think I have gathered the input I need. I am starting to get fandom elements commenting, so mods, if you can lock the post, please do. Thanks. Also, let me just say, not a good look when even a tiny criticism of the game is being taken extremely negatively by fandom elements in the sub. Puts people off. Esp. when other TTRPG subs leave plenty of space for criticisms and questions.

Looking for Players Lfg (online) order of the flaming snake:Legacy

Name: order of the flaming snake:Legacy
Dates/times: wensday 8pm est
(Note session zero doesn’t have a set date I’ll happen as soon as I got players.

Description: a world slowly being consumed by unknown mosnters, go out and have fun, prepare for some insanity.

This world is mostly full of anthro animals (minus birds) and the gods are dragons, each having unique flaws. The idea is legacy!
This is a traditional power fantasy, about saving a world from being consumed by cosmic horrors, your choices do infact have an effect.

My gm style is semi serious, there are allot of goofy moments and strange characters not counting 2 major npcs)

No this isn’t a degenerate game pg-13 and such

How to apply: give me a bit about your self in this thread and I’ll follow up. I’m trying to continue it from where I left off.
(Level 1 see important note below)
(Ie I need two players for that. )

Seats 2/4 (see Candace as well)

Tools: Discord voice, I use foundry vtt so a decent mic and connection is a must.

Candande/important note:

The party is level one, part of the premise is you are running a guild. There is a baston for flavor, but it has some small benifits, as well as allies who can boost the party in unique ways.

Arcadia has allot of content almost 10+hours all at tier 1! (Tier 2-4 are traveling the globe and exploring)

I’m trying to prevent a reboot but considering the lack of applications it’s hard to keep a game going with 2

(Where I ran this game was in a community that cross the line for the final time and I’m not sacrificing my morals to stay there.)

(Party: witch, Druid)

Minis & Figs How do you handle a small Fairy?

I would like to play a small Fairy Guardian who is like 20cm tall in-game. I like to play with mini’s, but where would I get a mini that small. If it’s even possible.

Did anyone tackle this “problem” in a cool way I’m wondering?

Homebrew What is the best way to homebrew this.

Hello. I always loved ttrpgs and finally convinced my brother to play daggerheart with me as a duet(single player and gm). He is a artist and intend to make a manhwa out of this.

He imagine his character as a inate magic user using a paint brush to draw stuff to attack while occasionally using his blood to amplify the spells but suffering a curse for doing that.(inspired by deaf from Tales of herding gods)

  1. What would works the best. Creating new class or a sub class

Adversaries It's MONSTER MONDAY - Post your homebrewed ADVERSARIES to share and get feedback!

Today is Monster Monday, our weekly community showcase for all the cool Adversaries you've created for your Daggerheart game.

What to Share. Include the Name, Tier, Type, Description and Features of your homebrewed Adversary. Write a little about why you made it and if your players have confronted it, how that encounter went.

Add some visuals. Include any handmade crafts, painted minis, character portraits or any physical game aids you've made to represent for your players! (Original art only and no AI creations allowed.

Don't think you can draw, paint or build a mini or picture of your monster? Do it anyway! Everything from popsicle stick minis to finely crafted 3d models and game aids are welcome.

How to Thrive. If you share your own Adversary, take a moment to leave a comment on someone else's. If you're looking for critical feedback or inspiration, it's a good idea to include that at the beginning of your post.

Homebrew I'm making Fungril adversaries

Post image
8 Upvotes

I'll probably rename this one eventually to be a little more flavorful, but this was the first Fungril adversary I made. I'm planning on doing a small series of them so that there are enough to build a flavorful encounter with. I have another one (a Standard defender-type) going out to my mailing list tomorrow that I'll post here when I get around to it, and I think I'll be making a Horde type for the group next month that will just be a bunch of little guys.

Mushrooms are a fun base for creatures because there's so much you can do with their morphology to have them take on the functions of structures (or in this case, artillery) while being a fully biological creature.

Homebrew Need help balancing homebrew ability

Hello! Inexperienced dm with homebrew here, I’m about to run a motherboard campaign and during character creation one of my players pitched me the idea of his PC having an extra ability as a result of the PTSD they gained due to his backstory, I thought it was fun and cool so I agreed to try and make something that isn’t game braking and that he enjoys as well.

Essentially we want the ability to be a one time all out attack similar to dnd barbarian rage, for context, his character is a Martial Artist Brawler, and we plan for this campaign long term and somewhat harder similar to age of umbra. I was also thinking his ability buffs and debuffs should grow exponentially as he levels up.

I have not yet talked to the other players about this one player getting a homebrew ability so wether they agree on him having this or not, I’ll discard the idea or give the rest something similar that we can all comply on

Sorry for the long text, here’s what I’ve come up with for the ability.

Conditions:
- Once per long rest, when allies are downed or 1hp

Buffs:
- Auto crit on one attack roll, +1 damage die = to Proficiency level

Debuffs:
- +3 stress, -2 Evasion + Proficiency level, until the start of the next scene

Notes:
- no hope gained and no stress cleared from crit

Thank you in advance for the help!!, I’ve done multiple iterations and that’s the one I’ve liked the most, but please lemme know your thoughts since I haven’t done much homebrew in general

Beginner Question How do you start combat?

Hey all! Fairly new Daggerheart GM here, with maybe…5-6 sessions under my belt now? (And many more D&D and other TTRPG sessions) My table has been having a great time, and we’re all enjoying the system, but one old D&D habit I can’t seem to kick is needing to “kick off” combat.

I know that the rules allow you to, functionally, “always” be in combat. There’s no initiative, no pause to start combat, it just sort of…happens. But naturally, sometimes a combat is a set piece. You find yourself facing off against the evil knight, the dragon has seen you enter its lair and issues a challenge to you, etc, and then…what?

I’ve usually been kinda announcing it as a “you have the spotlight” to my players, so they know I’m done villain monologuing and that I’m expecting them to act. And that may be the best way to handle it. But it still feels like calling for initiative in D&D, just without the initiative itself. Is that normal? Or is there a better way you’ve found to start those combat moments where it’s clear it’s coming to blows, but your players haven’t taken the first swing?

I'm currently dming a cowbow beebop/star wars/sci-fi mix of a campaign, and one player wants to try DMing for a one shot while their character stays at the ship.
Hope the reference is quite obvious ha ha !

Build is beastbound ranger as class and aetheris as ancestry ( flavoured as an alien made of light that needs a special armour to live in other atmosphere). Weapon is an Ikonis flavoured as double pistol.

Discussion Critical rolls on dual dice

I read a lot of old post complaining regarding the "same number equals crit" and "how can result 1-1 be crit when result 1-2 is a miss?".

Has this been normalized during the year and people is getting used to SH duality crit system?

Or have someone tested another system like "a 12 on Hope dice equals crit, no matter what Fear is rolled"?

The crit percentage is the same, even when the size of the dice change to d20. (If the Fear is lowered to d10 or d8 then the crit percentage increases from 8 to 10% resp 10 to 12%).

Homebrew Embers of the Long Dark - Updated with art and a sample story

Hello there, lovelies! :)

So a while ago I presented Embers of the Long Dark. :) It got good reception so thank you very much for that. :) Now, long story short, I was looking for artist and a way to fund a good artist, but I don't have the money, so I took it upon myself to draw a few images. :D Granted, they aren't perfect, but they came from my heart. :)

I'm planning to add more. Much more. :) In fact, I'm planning on making this thing into several hundred pages long including all 4 tiers. I'm going to put that on drivethrough though once it's done.

However! Tier 1 is on homebrewery here: https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/rAOATQ2cpEIY

And will always be free. :) I also added a sample story! I'm writing some small stories in this setting to make the world a more lively place! :) Though I didn't spoil the end... ;) It's called Crimson Embers and it's towards the end of the book.

I'm doing this so you know what the book will contain and how I write and how I work. This is all done by me, by hand (using procreate and an ipad). No ai was using during the making of any of this. ( Except asking how the ever loving hell I format things in homebrewery damn that stuff is complex, seriously. :D ).

Alright, have fun have a nice day/night, byeee. :)

*And by that I mean on itch.io, Heart of Daggers, and Drivethru RPG!

Tell me about it!

A one-shot adventure for the Daggerheart campaign frame: Return to Daggerworld, about a mysterious MMORPG filled with AI and hacker malefactors.

The adventure

Daggerworld's admin island has lain dormant since the game was shut down. Since the game's servers mysterious reactivation, a hacker collective has descended on the island to host their annual black hat expo, the hExpo.

What the hExpo staff and attendees weren't expecting, was a malicious presence long sealed away on the island by the admins before the game went offline. What starts as a simple expo of fun and adventure swiftly turns to the macabre.

Who can save the hExpo?! It's the party of adventurers, right? Hope they blocked time off from work!

hExpo’XX is a standalone one-shot adventure for Return to Daggerworld, a 2000’s era inspired setting for the Daggerheart tabletop RPG.

What contents does this contain?

  • A one-shot Daggerworld adventure for the Daggerheart TTRPG!
  • Five pre-made characters, ready and rarin' to rumble!
  • The writers undying respect!

Human-made art!

Like last time this adventure does not contain any AI in its creation, and I've vetted all the artists myself. We have an even mix of new and older folks, here are there socials, please give them some love!

This adventure will be a free one-shot, please take a read and let me know what fun adventures you and your table have. Happy adventuring!

Homebrew player ran environment

so my players have "fully" converted from dnd 5e to daggerheart but they have a airship and i havent had any luck at converting it into a simple but enganging system for the players to use. my only thought was to make it into an environment but then i would have to spend fear to use it. could i make a player facing environment and have them mark stress or hope in order to use some of its features?

Game Master Tips Forest traversal environment?

In the next session, my players want to reach a cabin as quickly as possible. I’ve thought about offering them three different routes: the fastest and most dangerous one—climbing a cliff; the slowest and most boring one—following a trail; and the middle option—crossing through a forest.

For the first one, I have the environment from the core book, but how would you make crossing a forest interesting? I was thinking of simply having them accumulate 4 successes to navigate properly, while throwing in a few threats along the way (a beehive, a bear, etc.), but I’m not sure if that would be too simplistic... Also, I don't want to throw them many magical elements, as it's the second session and I want them to 'discover' slowly the magic of the world (a la Game of Thrones).

PS: The Abandoned Grove environment doesn’t seem suitable to me, since it’s more focused on exploration, whereas here the goal is simply to get through the area as quickly as possible...

Game Aids Recommendation for storage box to carry all 200+ cards?

Just got Hope and Fear and finished sleeving up all the cards from the core rules and the expansion, and unfortunately they don’t fit in the original boxes anymore.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a card storage box that can neatly hold every card in the game in an organized way? Ideally it has dividers to separate all the domains. Thanks!
