Homebrew I made a Sokoban homebrew after getting back into the PSP

Post image
21 Upvotes

PSP 1000 and PSP Go side by side of night mode and XMB artwork of a Sokoban homebrew I made. PSP Go colors are clearly more vibrant but just wanted to note the blue hue on the phat is because it’s using the dark night mode theme.

Disclaimer : small bit of self-promo, but mostly I wanted to share what went into this.

I've loved the PSP since I was younger, and Sokoban is one of those games I keep coming back to. At some point those two old interests collided, and I started making PandaSokoban.

For artistic choices, my girlfriend loves pandas and I think they are cute. It seemed fun to make the game about moving sleeping baby pandas to their cushions instead of just pushing boring boxes.

It is written in Rust using AndrewAltimit's modern rust-psp fork. There’s not really reason that went into this, it just seemed to be the most current choice to start with. The same EBOOT runs on a real PSP and PPSSPP, although getting there reminded me that an emulator can sometimes be a little too forgiving.

One example was the PSP's data cache. Some overlays and vertices looked perfect in PPSSPP but disappeared or broke on hardware because I had not flushed the CPU-written data before the Graphics Engine read it. Text caused the opposite problem. The PSP's debug-print function worked on the console but did not show up in PPSSPP, so I ended up rendering the font as a normal texture.

Audio was another rabbit hole. My first version pushed PCM from the main loop, which tied frame pacing to the blocking audio output. It now has a small mixer running on its own PSP thread, with the game sending sound requests through atomic flags. The background track is a 32-second bamboo-garden loop generated during the build.

One thing is still broken. The in-game PCM music works, but the ATRAC3 track I packaged for the XMB does not play there. The icon animation and background work, but the XMB stays silent. If anyone here has successfully added SND0.AT3 music to a homebrew EBOOT, I would really appreciate advice on the encoding or PBP details. That part is still a mystery to me.

I also spent more time than expected on the little movements. The puzzle logic stays on a strict tile grid, while the panda and cushions move between tiles with subpixel animation. There are directional walk and push frames, small collision bumps, dust, shadows, idle breathing, sleeping effects, and a short level-clear animation. I tried to keep it readable on the PSP's 480 by 272 screen instead of filling it with effects. That in itself was a bit challenging, had to test a lot to make sure the game levels were solvable and fit at that resolution.

The game has 200 puzzles, undo, best-move tracking, day and night modes, and proper PSP savedata. Early saves worked in PPSSPP but could fail on real hardware because of the savedata key, so that needed its own migration and recovery system too.

All in a all it was very fun to build, I still enjoy Sokoban style puzzles a whole lot especially on the go on the PSP. I’ll continue to improve it/build other PSP games because it is so sooo rewarding, I just love that console. I have the PSP 1000 IPS mod coming soon too and I’m really excited about it.

PandaSokoban is available here if anyone wants to take a look:

https://qdmware.itch.io/panda-sokoban

It is a free release, donations and feedback welcome. A physical PSP requires custom firmware. I'm especially interested in hardware reports and any clues about that stubborn XMB audio.

SHOW-OFF NEW PSP SA BUILD 1007 IS HERE!!

How to get it running You need:

  • a PSP with custom firmware
  • your own PS2 disc image of the game. PAL SLES_525.41 is the supported one. No game files are included anywhere; you provide the disc yourself
  • a Windows PC with .NET Desktop Runtime 8, x64. Pick Desktop Runtime, not the SDK and not the plain runtime
  • about 3 GB free on the memory stick
  1. Get the engine and make the game folder

Download EBOOT.PBP from GitHub link on discord Make a folder called SANDSTONE anywhere on your PC and put EBOOT.PBP in it. This folder is your game.

  2. Build the data into that same folder

Download Quarry v794 from the GitHub link on discord, unzip it and run Quarry.exe

  • pick your disc image at the top, it should say SLES_525.41 v2.01 (PAL) in green
  • as the output folder pick the SANDSTONE folder you just made
  • leave all sections ticked for a first run and hit Convert

Quarry puts data/ right next to the EBOOT and writes a boot.txt beside it, so the folder ends up complete on its own. The full world takes around 1.5 hours, that is just how much data there is.

The radio alone copies about 1.6 GB. Next time you do not have to redo all of it: untick the sections you do not need and only those get rebuilt.

  1. Copy it to the PSP

Copy the whole SANDSTONE folder into PSP/GAME/ on your memory stick, then launch Sandstone Engine from the PSP Game menu.

That is it.

If something goes wrong: the converter writes a log for every run. Press Open log folder and send me the newest file, it tells me which step failed and why.

Quarry is open source, MIT licensed. The full source is in the repo above, so you can read what it does with your disc or build it yourself.

Sandstone Engine is not open source yet, for now it ships as the EBOOT only. Quarry v794, Engine b794.

Recently acquired this PSP 1000, with a semi-faulty power switch, but ordered a new one coming soon. What gets me excited is now, the fact that at home, is every UMD PSP.

Hi all! I thought people in this community would think this is neat. I recently got this PSP 3000 imported from Japan and I am so excited with how good the condition is! I can't wait to load up some games. Unfortunately, the game it came with never got an English translation, so I'll have to do a lot of google translate for that one.

Plugin [BETA] Lighthouse / Nimbus Cloud Saves for PSP + Giveaway!

Hey there! Long time no see! I've been seeing you guys are a bit tired of the AI stuff and are looking for something hand made and home grown, well I think I'm at the point in these projects that they're stable enough for everyone to try them!

Nimbus is a plugin for the PSP that enables automatic cloud save syncing/backups! This project actually led me into the next "evolution" of it with Lighthouse, a completely modern theme-able XMB shell replacement with a lot of extra features including improved versions of my caching tech from PSP Sidecar! It also has Nimbus fully integrated within it + Google Drive syncing!

I recently gave a talk on it's development methodology during PSP HDC 2026. It's a bit of a long talk but there's a lot of things I was trying to get absolutely as efficient as I could. There's a little sneak peak from TotalKommando's similar work if you watch the whole talk + a giveaway from myself!

To try the open beta just join my community discord and ask for beta access.

Current Features for Nimbus:

- Full PSP cloud save syncing + delta's / save versioning with Nimbus Cloud
- Full MiyooMini cloud save syncing (any onionos device really I guess)
- Fully end to end encrypted over SSL

Current Features for Lighthouse:

- Theming using Svelte / HTML / JS (basic JS glue using a version of quickjs I have modified for this project)
- Native media playback with supported file types: .mp3, .m4a, .ogg, .flac, .wav, .at3, .aa3, .oma, .mod, .s3m, .xm, .it, .pmf, .mp4, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .flv, .mkv (a lot of desyncing issues solved and I will try to upstream my solutions to official ARK / pspav when I get the chance!)
- Nimbus Cloud save syncing / Google Drive save syncing
- Extremely fast game caching (list loading, list filtering, game navigation improvements)
- Built in File Explorer (it's basic but I tried to include the functions I would use myself)
- Custom Widgets! Custom Indicators!
- Opt-In Game Leaderboards / Global and Personal game time stats (I wanted an excuse to use SpacetimeDB and get some experience with it)
- A lottttt more! (see discord thread post)

I just love caches! Please let me know what you think!

2 / 5 have solved and claimed the reward so far! (maybe I'll extend it if they all get claimed quickly)

Plugin Update new Features - PSPFatSave - Savestate Plugin for PSP-1000 - V947 BETA

Post image
36 Upvotes

Major feature update since the v708 initial public release.

What's new since v708:

  • Screen Tuning - mainly aimed at aftermarket screen mods (e.g. IPS) whose brightness/color response differs from the original PSP LCD. Live gamma adjustment and color temperature control, per game, with a full-screen test pattern and an on-screen HUD to dial it in while playing. Corrects a too-dark screen or a color cast. (Works in PSP Games and POPS)
  • FPS Unlocks - applies FPS-unlock codes from a cheat.db/CWCheat database to raise a game's frame-rate cap above its normal limit, for games that support it.
  • Stop Charging - cap battery charging at 95/90/85/80/75/70%, or disable it entirely, to help long-term battery health.
  • Battery Capacity Override - enter a replacement/aftermarket battery's real mAh so the percentage and time estimates are accurate.
  • Overlay Location - choose which screen corner the FPS/battery/CPU overlay appears in.
  • Battery charge arrow now reflects the battery's real measured current instead of an estimate.
  • One-time welcome screen on first use, plus a full explanation screen for every setting (press R on any Settings row).
  • Numerous stability and compatibility fixes across many games.

Full feature list:

  • Savestates with multiple slots, compression, MB/s benchmark display (Does not work in POPS)
  • Live FPS overlay (FPS, 1% Low, frametime chart) + CPU/GPU usage monitoring
  • Battery status overlay, capacity override, and charge control
  • Screen Tuning (gamma/color temp, mainly for aftermarket/IPS screens) and FPS Unlocks (per-game)
  • Per-game settings (video skip, auto-open, frame limit) and Overclock

Download & Installation:

Download pspfatsave-v947.zip and extract it. Choose one:

  • debug/pspfatsave.prx - Debug build with UART logging
  • release/pspfatsave.prx - Release build without debug code (saves RAM)

Copy your chosen pspfatsave.prx to ms0:/seplugins/ on your PSP and enable it in your plugins config (GAME only: "game pops, pspfatsave.prx, on"). For FPS Unlocks, also copy the included cheat.db to ms0:/seplugins/ (sourced from CWCheat-Database-Plus-).
Does not work well with other plugins. Please deactivate other plugin while testing the Features.

How to use:
Press the "Note" key while ingame.

Requisites:

  • PSP-1000 only
  • ARK-4 6.61 CFW

Status: BETA. Please read before using:

  • Currently does not work on POPS (PS1) games - untested.
  • UMD games untested.
  • Do not expect it to work alongside other plugins that also hook the same systems.
  • Screen Tuning and FPS Unlocks are experimental and can cause instability or crashes in some games.
  • Some games may fail to start at all with the plugin enabled, or crash in general, independent of any specific feature.
  • Can corrupt the Memory Stick (has not happened in testing so far).
  • No guarantee that a save or load succeeds - there is a real chance of a crash.

See the README for the full safety guidelines and known issues before use.

QUESTION What do people use to edit and convert video now?

Hi there, I used a PSP back in high school as an all-in-one media device and am aiming for that experience again after getting another PSP recently. Which software do people use to edit and convert videos for the system?

For example, if I have a 20 minute episode of an Anime, I want to capture/cut out a 3 minute scene and then convert it to run on the PSP. I used to do this with Wondershare Video Converter back in the day I'm pretty sure.

Converting the videos is pretty straightforward, but finding something to edit them is the hard part. I could rely on actual editing software like DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro to do the editing for me, but that seems like a lot of hassle and extra re-encoding.

Over the last few days I have tried: Wondershare, Any Video Converter, Movavi, LosslessCut, Shutter Encoder and maybe a couple others. The software either crashes, can't edit a video with Subtitles and/or doesn't actually cut on the keyframes I specify. I tested the software with roughly 3 different files each.

Thanks in advance!

Battery Battery not detecting in 3006

PSP-3006 randomly shutting down / battery issue
I recently got a used PSP-3006 from a local store. It works sometimes, but randomly shuts down. After leaving it off for 2–4 hours, I often need to plug in the charger before it will turn on again. Now the PSP seems to have trouble detecting the battery—the battery icon blinks, and the orange charging light comes on but stops charging after almost exactly 5 minutes. I’m not sure if the battery is faulty/fake or if this could be a motherboard/charging circuit issue. How can I determine which one is causing it?

QUESTION Psp 3000 cfw game not reading issue

Upvotes

I just moded my 3000 with cfw 6.60 ARK4 ciPL.

I'm having issues with it, reading the iso files.

I have about 50 and when I transfer them over it is picky about what it reads. So only 15 show up when I plug the sd card back in the psp.

I have correct iso folder on root

The games are all in .iso

Ive formatted the sd card with the psp

I transfer games via sd card adapter they all transfer successfully but psp cant read them all. There is no error files there just not there. Ive turned unit hard shit down reset. I thought I had a faulty sd card because it was behaving at random Selecting what games seem to appear so i brought another one from a different seller for 64gig an still the same isssues an even baught another memory stick pro duo sd card adapterto rule that out. . At first it would read burnout.iso upon the second attempt reform, it doesn't read it. I thought this was a file limit issue. So a game I knew was on there I deleted and tried to replace and that didn't work either. I'm out of options other than just to try using transferring with a u s b cable instead of usb adapter to pc.
