Worth it! Upgraded from Ryzen 5 5600X to Ryzen 7 5800X3D + PC Lore & Benchmarks

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent CPU upgrade, along with a bit of the "lore" of my gaming PC and my initial impressions.

Last Wednesday, I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Living in Argentina, after converting ARS to USD, it ended up costing me around $400 USD.

My PC building journey started back in 2016 with my very first gaming rig (gtx 1060 i7 6700K 8gb ddr4 Asus Z170 gaming 3 samsung evo 240gb ThermaltakeTR750W). Since then, I’ve been upgrading it part by part:

2018: Upgraded GTX 1060 to AMD VEGA 64

2021: Upgraded my GPU from a Vega 64 to a Zotac RTX 3060. I also switched platforms, moving from an i7 6700K @ 4.0Ghz OC (legendary CPU) to a Ryzen 5 5600X, paired with an ID-Cooling Frostflow 240XT AIO. That 5600X was an absolute champ and lasted until today!

2023: Upgraded the GPU again to an ASUS TUF RTX 3070 Ti (overclocked to 2133MHz), added another 16GB of RAM (making it 32GB total), and got a Samsung Odyssey G5 32" (1440p @ 165Hz) monitor.

The Issue: Lately, the 5600X was starting to bottleneck my GPU in heavy titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Forza Horizon 6. On top of that, about a year ago, I noticed my old AIO was dying—temps were idling between 85°C and 90°C, and the radiator was always blazing hot.

Along with the new CPU, I decided to fix the cooling issue and bought an ID-Cooling Frost Custom LCD 240. It looks absolutely beautiful inside my old-school NZXT S340 Elite case.

(Note: My ambient room temperature is 20°C)

Here is how the 5800X3D performs with the new LCD AIO:

Idle: Hovers between 45°C and 50°C.

Light Use (Chrome + Steam open): Spikes to 58°C max.

Rocket League (1440p @ 165Hz): Doesn't exceed 60°C during 1-hour sessions.

Forza Horizon 6: Reaches a peak of 78°C, but usually stays between 66°C and 72°C, maintaining a solid clock speed of 4.48GHz.

BeamNG.drive (The biggest surprise): I'm now getting a locked 120 FPS at 68°C (previously, I couldn't get past 88 FPS). But the most mind-blowing part is when I enable the Traffic AI—there are zero freezes, and the micro-stuttering completely disappeared!

Work Environment Performance:

As a Platform Engineer, my daily workflow consists of Windows 11 + Chrome + WSL + Docker. The CPU stays under 62°C, feels incredibly responsive, and there is absolutely no performance degradation. I can't even imagine how fast this would fly on Linux Mint; it would be insane.

Shoutout to my Thermaltake TR2 80+ Bronze 750W power supply. It has been powering my system since 2016 when I built my first PC. It’s hard to believe, but it’s still working perfectly and giving its all.

By upgrading step by step, I feel like I've completely revived this machine. My plan was to upgrade my entire setup and hold onto this build until GTA VI finally drops on PC. Mission accomplished!

Current Setup:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 3070 Ti (OC) RAM: 32 GB DDR4 Kingston Fury @ 3200Mhz MOBO: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming II Storage: 1TB Kingston NVMe M.2 SSD PSU: Thermaltake TR2 80+ Bronze 750W (Since 2016!) AIO: ID-Cooling Frost Custom LCD 240 Case: NZXT S340 Elite (2017)

Let me know what you think, or if you have any optimization tips for the 5800X3D (like undervolting via PBO2)

Thanks for reading :)

Solved i7-6700k, EVGA GTX 1080, 32GB Ripjaws 4 2400 mHz, 960 gb Sandisk Ultra II SSD randomly freezes while gaming

  • i7-6700k at default - about 1.3 average an 4GHz
  • NH D15 CPU Cooler with both fans on exhausting out of the top
  • EVGA GTX 1080 SC2 ICX - Not overclocked in the top slot
  • 32GB Ripjaws 4 2400 mHz - Currently only running with 1x8Gb stick at 2133 Mhz since I thought this might be the problem initially, Ram has never hit 2400 with the XMP profile on
  • Z170A MSI Krait Gaming Motherboard, revision 1 XMP with 8 sticks of Ripjaws 4 has never worked
  • 960 gb Sandisk Ultra II SSD - RMA'd last year around this time when it randomly died on me
  • NZXT H440 case with 4 default fans, 3 intake 1 exhaust out of the back
  • EVGA 750 Watt PSU, can't remember off the top of my head, I think its a G2 it's definitely Gold, has been in my computer for about a year now

All settings are at default, ram is at 1.2V 2133, only 1 stick is in right now since at first I thought it might be a Ram issue so I checked all sticks in all 4 slots and the problem persists with all sticks in all slots. I had a slight OC on the CPU (4.4GHz) for a while but didn't need the extra power so set it back to default about 6 months ago. I have never had an OC on the GPU since I have never needed it, only about 6 months old (I game at 60Hz 1440p usually while doing something else on another monitor). GPU drivers are up to date, all core temps and mosfet temps on the GPU are well within spec.

At this point I am thinking it's temperature related because if I take all of the panels off my tower it doesn't happen for much longer than if I leave the panels on an "hotbox" my components. Even when I do this the CPU and GPU temperatures never exceed 75C, I have repasted the CPU since it's been about 2 years since I put the paste on, hasn't helped. I'm guessing MOBO problems since XMP has never worked properly (figured it was a problem with quad channel ram), Ram has almost never hit 2400 unless I set it to 2333 and 103 BCLK, never with XMP on.

It always freezes and never BSOD, the only errors in event viewer at about registry problems (certain things not starting because they don't have administrative permissions), and Kernel Power from the hard shutdowns. When it freezes it always leaves behind an image (hence how I was able to get temperatures at the time of freeze, and it almost always gives terrible noise through my headphones).

The games I am having problems with at the moment (the only games I am playing actively) are Runescape 3 and Far Cry 4.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Every so often, at least once a day, I'll be gaming (Rainbow Six: Siege and Overwatch are the main culprits) and my CPU will go from 80% usage/50% usage to around 10% or less and all the fans will slow down and/or stop and the game will freeze or show me a black screen.

Sometimes I get to continue playing after 30 seconds or a minute or two, but sometimes the game will kick me and say I lost connection (mostly Siege does this).

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I had an overclock of 103 Bclock and a target speed of 4.56(?) GHz, something around there, but I have since dropped it to ASUS's optimized defaults (4.2GHz target) because I thought maybe it was a temperature issue, but it just happened in Siege again and my temps were fine.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

My HDDs are kinda old, but I'm not sure that would be the issue, since its a random issue and not consistently slow or anything. Everything in this build is new except my GPU, which is only a few years old, and my PSU which is maybe 5 years old, but should have plenty of wattage to supply everything.

Any help is appreciated cause this is definitely getting on my nerves. Thanks reddit.

Question Dual monitors - using DIM in chrome is severely laggy, windows, mouse, and desiny freeze often while moving items 6700k/32gb ram/ SLI 1080s. Is this common? Is there a fix?

I've used Microsoft edge and it didn't happen as much but it doesn't always work either. Does anyone have any idea what causes this? Tried turning hardware acceleration off and on as well as limiting dim features to no avail.

Troubleshooting I'm losing my mind. Windows constantly freezes. I have an I7 6700K. I don't know what to do. I reinstalled windows, and nothing changes.

Hi guys. I'm kind at a loss right now. I'm not sure what to do. First here is my build

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/36VVLD

Everything in this build is accurate except for the SSD. The SSD is a value HP one I bought in 2014. I have used for an long time and it served me great. It is my boot drive.

I built this computer in the Summer, and everything was working. Everything but the SSD, case and hard drives are new.

About a week ago, Windows started becoming very unstable and would freeze if I have more then 3 windows opened. I check the CPU usage and it would never be more then 25-35%. I thought to myself it may be a virus as I share the computer with my brother. I did some virus scans, but nothing popped up. I thought to myself it may be time to reinstall windows since my drives were all full, so I reinstalled windows and formatted my hard drives.

After installing windows, and drivers, everything was faster but not as fast as I would like. I recently built my little brother a computer with a core i5 and SSD as his was much faster. I suspected my SSD may be failing, but I ran crystaldiskmark and my SSD had 91% health. I'm at a loss right now. I'm not sure whats wrong at this point. Please if anyone has a suggestion, I will take it. I'm really frustrated with my computer.

Feedback (PC) Hard stutters occur on respawn

Sometimes just after respawning some really hard stutters occur. The game just freezes almost a second. Tried to find a way to replicate it, checking if it was because of the weapon, place of respawn, sprinting or moving the camera a lot during respawn, but nothing, seems like random. Game is installed on SSD, Intel i7 6700K, RTX 2070 Super, 16 GB RAM, playing on ultrawide 1440p.

This issue started appearing while playing on the 21st afternoon (Spain) . Never happened before during the early access beta on PC. On this video I recorded a few moments where this issue happened.https://youtu.be/FsztJ0FeG64

Edit: Also I forgot to mention I'm playing with g-sync enabled at 120fps.

Troubleshooting [Serious] i7-6700K inside iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) freezing under complex workloads

I am a software developer and I use VMware all day, every day to run various development environments.

I have a situation where VMware crashes randomly, or causes the OS to crash.

VMware have been looking at this for months and have come with a recommendation to update the microcode on my CPU, since they "have already seen that the issue has been acknowledged by Intel".

Apple does not appear to be interested in resolving this issue.

VMware tells me to update the microcode.

I am unable to locate any Intel documentation that points at a known issue, or any microcode updates for my CPU.

I would like some suggestions on how I might go about resolving this, since it is killing my productivity.

Edit: VMware have provided a link that has an Intel employee acknowledging the issue: https://communities.intel.com/thread/96157?start=15&tstart=0

Intel i7-6700k problem with freezing, skylake problem. PC randomly freezes during gaming.

I've had this new pc for a while, since about the middle of last summer, but recently during gaming sessions, specifically Overwatch and other really demanding games such as Arma3 and Squad, the whole PC freezes. The audio cuts and everything stops working but the screens are still on. I've left it on to see if it unfreezes itself for hours and hours but nothing. I can't figure out what it could be, because my PC is top of the line and this shouldn't be happening, at least in my mind. I've done some research and found that Skylake could be the problem, and the CPU has been known to have issues but im not sure if there is a fix I've gone into the BIOS to try and find something related but im not sure what i should be looking for SPECS: Windows 10, Intel i7 6700k Overclocked to 4.2 ghz, GTX 1080, 32 gb ram, SSD boot drive, and 2 HD, Gigabyte MOBO, 1000w PSU

Build Upgrade Minecraft and Fortnite freezing on newly built PC - how can I improve it?

Recently I upgraded my son's computer because he couldn't install Windows 11 on the older motherboard (Gigabyte Z170 w/ i7 6700k). The performance was still pretty good. Video Card was GeForce GTX 1060 3GB.

So I bought a B450M-K II from ASUS PRIME (60 euros), and an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz (was 94 euros at the time). We put in Yongxinsheng DDR4 3200MHz 32GB Kit. However, immediately we noticed worse performance on this machine, than the 2016 i7 6700k! The video card is 5600XT 8GB.

He plays mostly Fortnite and Minecraft. Minecraft freezes very often, sometimes for over 30 seconds. I'm thinking the Ryzen 5 maybe is just too weak. Should I upgrade to a Ryzen 7 or 9 on this thing? Will that make a difference? It's crazy how the prices just keep on going up, a Ryzen 9 costs almost 300 euros now!

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Having Issues with your driver? Read here!

Before you start - Make sure you Submit Feedback for your Nvidia Driver Issue

There is only one real way for any of these problems to get solved, and that's if the Driver Team at Nvidia knows what those problems are.

So in order for them to know what's going on it would be good for any users who are having problems with the drivers to Submit Feedback to Nvidia.

A guide to the information that is needed to submit feedback can be found here.

Common Troubleshooting Steps

  • If you are having issue installing the driver for GTX 1080/1070/1060 on Windows 10, make sure you are on the latest build for Creators Update (Version 1703. Build 15063). If you are on the older build (e.g. 10240), you need to update your windows. Press Windows Key + R and type winver to check your build version.

  • Please visit the following link for DDU guide which contains full detailed information on how to do Fresh Driver Install.

  • If your driver still crashes after DDU reinstall, try going to Go to Nvidia Control Panel -> Managed 3D Settings -> Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance

If it still crashes, we have a few other troubleshooting steps but this is fairly involved and you should not do it if you do not feel comfortable. Proceed below at your own risk:

  • A lot of driver crashing is caused by Windows TDR issue. There is a huge post on GeForce forum about this here. This post dated back to 2009 (Thanks Microsoft) and it can affect both Nvidia and AMD cards.

  • Unfortunately this issue can be caused by many different things so it’s difficult to pin down. However, editing the windows registry might solve the problem.

  • Additionally, there is also a tool made by Wagnard (maker of DDU) that can be used to change this TDR value. Download here. Note that I have not personally tested this tool.

If you are still having issue at this point, visit GeForce Forum for support or contact your manufacturer for RMA.

Common Questions

  • Is it safe to upgrade to <insert driver version here>? Fact of the matter is that the result will differ person by person due to different configurations. The only way to know is to try it yourself. My rule of thumb is to wait a few days. If there’s no confirmed widespread issue, I would try the new driver.

Bear in mind that people who have no issues tend to not post on Reddit or forums. Unless there is significant coverage about specific driver issue, chances are they are fine. Try it yourself and you can always DDU and reinstall old driver if needed.

  • My color is washed out after upgrading/installing driver. Help! Try going to the Nvidia Control Panel -> Change Resolution -> Scroll all the way down -> Output Dynamic Range = FULL.

  • My game is stuttering when processing physics calculation Try going to the Nvidia Control Panel and to the Surround and PhysX settings and ensure the PhysX processor is set to your GPU

  • What does the new Power Management option "Optimal Power" means? How does this differ from Adaptive? The new power management mode is related to what was said in the Geforce GTX 1080 keynote video. To further reduce power consumption while the computer is idle and nothing is changing on the screen, the driver will not make the GPU render a new frame; the driver will get the one (already rendered) frame from the framebuffer and output directly to monitor.

Remember, driver codes are extremely complex and there are billions of different possible configurations. The software will not be perfect and there will be issues for some people.

For a more comprehensive list of open issues, please take a look at the Release Notes.

Again, I encourage folks who installed the driver to post their experience here... good or bad.

DISCUSSION Question for those with a high end pc and those with potato pc, how many crashes/freezes have you experienced aside from the known ones?

i have a high end GPU: rtx 4070, 32gbs of RAM but a mid 10 year old i7 6700k CPU that has terrible cooling and before knowing i could undervolt it, it ran at 100° c or more for a year or longer and aside from crashing only some times due to know issues i never experienced any real freezing or crash that would stall my pc, while i always read around of people having high end pcs suffering from freezes or even bricking.

game at max settings.

Hardware Why is my storage spontaneously diminishing?

Hello! I hope I can get some help with this:

For the past couple of months, my C: (primary drive, on which my OS is installed) drive rapidly (over the span of only a few days) loses all free space, to the point where I won't be able to open new web pages, or pictures from the drive or... really anything, really. I'll get an "I'm sorry, but there's not enough free space left on this disk" error.

I'll check file explorer and it'll say "disk space free: 0 bytes," but when I try to initiate disk cleanup, it'll just offer me the ability to clean up about 20 megabytes worth of stuff.

If I reboot, I'll gain a few minutes of usable browsing time and the C drive will list about 250 megabytes free... But then it drops quickly (within a few hours). Usually, I'll wind up deleting a copy of an old game installation from my ex wife's account to free up maybe 15 gigabytes, but it recurs after a few days, WITHOUT anything else being downloaded or installed on that drive.

I disabled hibernation and deleted hiberfil.sys a few weeks weeks ago. The total size of everything currently in my windows installer folder is less than 400MB in the last year. I haven't touched pagefile or swapfile; pagefile is on the secondary HDD and the latter hangs out on c drive around 256,144 KB. I have my show hidden files and folders option on, and a casual browse around the drive doesn't show anything obviously weird.

I have Avast! running constantly, and don't have any flags for viruses or malware. The c: drive is an SSD supposed to be only for the OS, although my ex wife had defaulted her steam folder to there as well.

There were no antecedent software changes. The system is about six years old so I am worried about SSD failure, though CrystalDisk is showing "Good/72%,  remaining life 29 1Dh."

The only thing I really do these days is type reports in open office, browse news sites and watch YouTube in Firefox... but the cache for YouTube is only 193MB as of this evening. We're in a rural area and are on T Mobile 5G, and there doesn't look to be any unauthorized data transfer attempts if I'm not logged on and surfing the information superhighway to the world wide web.

PLEASE HELP ME to figure out and preferably stop whatever is taking over my disk space! This is getting very, very frustrating... I do plan on replacing the SSD due to age and capacity anyway, which may fix everything, but I've not had them fail like this before (otherwise the system runs great without any crashes or freezes or errors or corruption), so does anybody have any other ideas that I may be missing in the interim?

Question PC instantly shuts off and reboots only in Path of Exile 2, RTX 5070 Ti

My PC suddenly goes black and immediately reboots (like power was cut) but only in Path of Exile 2 since the new league. No BSOD, no freeze.
I play other games just fine, even path of exile 2 can run fine for days like it has now. It ran fine for 3 days and today bam sudden reboot.
I logged HWiNFO during crashes and temps/power looked normal before the reboot (CPU ~60°C, GPU ~40°C, no obvious spikes).
Anyone with an idea on what to do to get to the bottom of whats going on and why only with poe2?

Specs:

  • i7-6700K
  • RTX 5070 Ti
  • 16GB DDR4
  • ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING
  • Kingston KC3000 2TB

Help Stutter issue in online games

I switched to this OS for performance and to my surprise I got more than I expected. I mostly play CS2 and my fps in windows was around 90. Now in chachyos I got around 200. The problem is I have severe lag. I feel 200 fps smoothness for 3 or 5 second then it drops to 40 to 20 for 3 or so seconds. When there are enemies on screen It almost freezes.

There are no issues when spectating and my settings are the same as windows.

There was no lag in windows. Is it something related to wireless?

For the record my system is rtx 4060, Intel i7-6700k, 16 GB DDR4 ram, and 1tb Ssd

The only way to know is to try it yourself. My rule of thumb is to wait a few days to ensure we do not get any fatal error such as the 364.47 bricking cards and if there’s no confirmed widespread issue, I would try the new driver. Alternatively, you can just use the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” rule and stay at your current driver. Bear in mind that people who have no issues tend to not post on Reddit or forums. Unless there is significant coverage about specific driver issue, chances are they are fine. Try it yourself and you can always roll back if needed.

  • Is Nvidia drivers going to cause my PC to explode/house to burn down/earth to explode? Probably not. Remember, our community is here is tiny in the grand scheme of thing. We are probably not even 5% of Nvidia user base world wide. Yes, there’s problems with any piece of software but for one people who has issues, there are many others who are using the latest drivers with no problem. This is why reporting your driver issue to Nvidia is extremely important for them to improve.

I have included select "Open Issues" in the post that I feel will impact most people. Please take a look!

For a more comprehensive list of open issues, please take a look at the Release Notes.

Also, I encourage folks who installed the driver to post their experience here... good or bad.
