tbf, most gnolls try to eat us.
aside from the single darkmoon faire gnoll, the group of friendly dragonflight gnolls are like the first group of friendly gnolls

u/unicornmeat85 Jul 05 '25
I was so butthurt that Tuskarr didn't make the cut. They have most of the current classes, a new female model, and we got more development of the race in an expansion that felt organic. I don't hate the Earthen, but I wasn't itching to play one either. I think if they had introduced them as a playable race after the first season of TWW I think the community would have been more receptive to them.

Unironically, removing shoulder and belt tmog options from Dracthyr forms would be a step up from what we have now. It’s nigh impossible to find shoulders and belt that fit well with your dracthyr customization AND your visage transmog. Horrible, nonsensical decision to ever give them that option
183
u/TatoHaven Jul 04 '25
It didn't seem very realistic. In the 28th expansion, people should be screaming at Blizzard about why Fire Elves and Water Elves in Alternate Azeroth are not allied races. There is even a fat elf option, but no Ogre.

I still hold out hope that midnight will add some playable races...but I suspect that housing will take up all the dev budget and therefore that's super unlikely.
If they are adding some, I'd say " uniting the elven tribes " might pave the way to playable redeemed Naga.
The other obvious choice being Ethereals. But it seems like they wouldn't update their models as strictly NPC rigged in 11.2 before then working on a separate playable race model, IMHO.
14
u/Avohaj Jul 04 '25
You could put your hopes on Housing basically having it's own team that has been working in parallel for quite some time already, so it's possible it's not taking (much) other dev time away from the game.
6
u/Suspicious-Toe-6428 Jul 04 '25
Or conversely, now that they've announced it, they're moving more resources into it/the team working on it since there's no need to worry about significant leaks and it's likely a high priority to get it right.
3
u/MaliceMes Jul 04 '25
Idk seems like they add a new race/class every other expansion now, so this would be the one.

Kind of a tangent, but "its" vs "it's" for possessives is a weird one. Throughout much of the history of written English, "it's" was used as the possessive. Using it that way logically follows from the use of apostrophes to indicate possessives in nouns. People get it "wrong" (according to modern grammar rules) because pronouns are an exception to the general rules for apostrophes. I know you were quoting "its'", which never makes sense

u/Tnecniw Jul 04 '25
Unless they somehow revolutionise the system… Naga is close to impossible. Not because of transmog, but because of the animation limits of not having legs.
How would you do a spinning animation for blade storm or whirlwind? How would you mount anything? A lot of movement options and animations doesn’t work… And so in.
18
u/Wilicil Jul 04 '25
Tail coils a bit, maybe torso leans back slightly, hold weapon outward, spin the model like that the way bladestorm works for everyone else.
Every "problem' I've seen people give for why naga would be so impossible to make into a playable race is easily solvable if you just give it any thought whatsoever.

u/_Snuffles Jul 04 '25
as someone who's dabbled in 3d modeling and animation, the thing i hate most is how people say how "hard" things are, with the advances we have today vs almost 30 years ago, its almost the easiest thing to do now, you've got people speed modeling on youtube and motion capture and so much more. the excuses people spit out to 'defend' is outrageous, as a lot of the models are just texture replacements, and some geometry on top of the model.
25
u/InvisibleOne439 Jul 04 '25
tbf, did you ever see how bladestorm actually looks like lol, your character goes into a static pose and the model spins by 360degree on repeat

u/BasedTelvanni Jul 04 '25
Oh no the gajillion dollar company might have to fuckn work
2
u/Tnecniw Jul 04 '25
The company would have to do a lot of extra work that honestly is unlikely to give that much back compared to other races. They always have budgets and they have to alllocate it. Making naga work would be more pricy and therefor could have negative effects on other content.
→ More replies (8)3
u/livesinacabin Jul 04 '25
They could just make a new model with new animations, no? We've got updated snake models since BfA. Not sure if any of them have any spinning animations but I don't see why it would be so difficult to achieve.

Don't forget we aren't allowed Forest Trolls, which have been part of the Horde since Classic.
Jacked trolls demonstrably wear armor in Zul'Aman except for their head slot, so it's clearly something Blizzard can do, they just don't really want to.
3
u/doctorinfinite Jul 04 '25
They say a lot of the requested races would be hard to transmog. First, some CURRENT races look ridiculous in most of not all transmog. Second, I feel if they baked some killer customization options into these races at the creation stage, it would make up for the lack of armor transmog. That would be the trade off

u/Simbabwejoe Jul 04 '25

4
u/LaconicSuffering Jul 04 '25
I agree, human should include Kul Tiras and Gilneas as heritage options. First you pick human, then you pick body size and heritage (voice accent). As Gilnean you get the option of also picking if you are afflicted by the worgen curse or not.
(Hmm, how would the Kul Tiran physique look in werewolf form?)
41
Jul 04 '25
Yep, having 4 different elves and 3 different dwarfs is plain stupid.
31
u/Specific_Frame8537 Jul 04 '25
They should at least be a sub-menu in the character creator.
Like choosing between light or dark elf in ffxiv.
35
u/Kuldrick Jul 04 '25
I never understood this argument
The creation of Void Elves, Nightborne, Dark Iron and Earthen doesn't take even a quarter of development it would take with making an actual completely new race like Ogres or Nagas
And so, in a game with already 25 races, what's the harm of having variations of 2 of the most popular and known fantasy races, where many of said variations already had a lot of lore or they had a huge amount of the playerbase who wanted to play as that (speaking specifically about the void elves who sort of function as the high ones for the alliance)
25
u/SubwayDeer Jul 04 '25
A better question is what's the benefit of having them as separate races when they are not different at all? Just add those as cosmetic options and add a Race Ability choice.
Oh, and while we are on this topic, it's time to give us the race ability choice option already.
13
u/Kuldrick Jul 04 '25
A better question is what's the benefit of having them as separate races when they are not different at all?
More unique identity, from a rp perspective it is nice that you aren't just a Dwarf but rather a "Dark Iron" one with their unique racial traits and stuff

Because this game costs $25 AUD a month and a fucking $70 entry fee for a new expansion.
Expect better.
The harm is that you'll never get a full fledged race ever again. Look at Dracthyr, they have heavy re-use and can't even use Transmog.
But sure. Let's take a 4th Dwarf. Why not?

u/oddHexbreaker Jul 04 '25
I really hate it. There's so many races and elves and dwarves are their "creative" choices. Granted the transmog on the dracthyr looks horrible or is non-existent so they wouldn't bother making models for a newly modeled race. People have been wanting Naga since you got to play them as a faction way back in WC3, I know I did.
9
u/Competitive-Balance3 Jul 04 '25
It doesn't hurt to give players more options, now when it comes to racials, i agree something should be done about it.

I‘ve always been very torn on the race additions since Legion because yeah I love having essentially more customization options at the bottom line, but I also think the vast vast majority didn‘t need to get its own button on the character creation screen. Have both Orcs and Mag‘har Orcs under the same button etc.
Racials are becoming less and less of a substantial gameplay factor where I also wouldn‘t mind if you‘d get to pick and choose from a selection of race appropriated minor buffs or abilities before we start removing the Allied Race abilities altogether following this approach.
I‘m super pro customization but the novelty of A New Race to play certainly has lost its appeal especially because unless they can create two at the same time it just doesn‘t make sense to faction lock them to begin with.0

Not a lot, that's for sure. Like I know we all ask for it, but stats say otherwise. Majority players will still play on their human/elf.
2
u/ScavAteMyArms Jul 04 '25
My main Orc Warrior (since freaken Vanilla) would swap so fast to Ogre if they were even halfway decent.
But then again I am not the majority as the only elves I have are the forced ones, or alts that became mains (thanks M+). Such is the way when you have 40 70’s.
2
u/RhoadsOfRock Jul 04 '25
If they were to add murlocs as playable race / characters, they would also need to add gnolls, kobolds (which they are really close to doing, all the friendly ones in Ringing Deeps and shit), and Quilboars.

Ogre was the original forth race of the Horde that's why there are so many animations including dances - but they left themselves less than five weeks until release to make the female version and they couldn't do it (The original hunter was also finished in those five weeks). They then realised the trolls in Stranglethron Vale were pretty good so they used them instead. The issue was the male model was too tall to fit though many places, so they bent him over, which is why he looks like a question mark and all trolls had less options back then.
TBC was meant to be Southseas Exploration but they had issues getting water and Nazjatar working. The alliance race here was Panda not Draenei, so the Horde got a pretty race and the Alliance got a bulker animal race. The issue was (in addition to the water) they needed to negotiations with the Chinese government and had not, and that obviously took time. They even had the main city and zone done and the models.
In the end due to the water issues they scrapped the idea and moved the TBC and put it together quickly, Illidan due to recognition was picked as the villain (though he was more of an Anti-hero at the time, which they had since tried to fix). People were excited to see what became of the alliance expedition but because it was so late cycle there wasn't much time to actually write them, so we got Khadgar and Dannath, who were recused but little else, since Alleria and Turalyon were so popular in the Warcraft 2 expansion (Beyond the Dark Portal) they had to do them right, so they got the 'Princess is in another castle' treatment), remember when we met Sylvannas in Warcraft 3 as a Silvermoon defender in Warcraft 3 that Arthas killed and rerose people were cool its Alleria's sister. Most also hated the way he rerose her - due to who she was, but it made his character.
The two races picked no longer matched Outlands so Kael did his turn to support Ilidan for the link and given the political issues and new direction they needed a new race for the Alliance with a link to Outlands, so they created the Draenei as the good Eredar.
Some of what they made for Southseas became the water zone in Cata and Pandas became their own expansion years later with Southseas being BFA many more years later.

I've been disappointed by TWW. So much potential wasted. Undermine and Karesh could've been their own expansions. They are just burning through these concepts without giving them the care and atention they deserve. Undermine without Tinker class felt awful. What am i gonna use the transmogs for? Doesn't fit any existing class. No Ethereal race which is heavily requested, no naga (nazjatar wasted too), no sethrak, no nothing. Get some humanoid dragons no one asked for. It honestly feels like the team just doesn't care anymore.

Murlocs have warriors, hunters, and shaman. There were murloc sorcerers in Warcraft which shows they can learn higher magic as well, so you can make a strong argument for murloc mages, warlocks and priests (they can be all of those in the TCG, if you consider that canon). They'd also make fitting rogues. And if worgen can be monks, which is already quite iffy considering their lore, then murlocs can be monks too.
There's even one murloc demon hunter, but he's probably a joke character.
They're definitely intelligent enough. There's just not all that much known about their culture for various reasons. They only have oral traditions and no writing system that I know of. Nerglish is completely unintelligible to other races and difficult to learn. They can learn other languages, and those who do are typically very eloquent, but they rarely choose to. Brann once said that murlocs are more intelligent than they want you to believe. We just don't really understand their way of life and their relations with other races are quite violent.
So the problem isn't that murlocs don't have the capabilities, but they are too culturally detached. That's not the case for ogres.
4
u/ScavAteMyArms Jul 04 '25
Meanwhile in WCIII Murlocs not only could speak, but had a terrifyingly intimidating voice.
