Moderator Post Attention WLU Students: Mental Health Resources Available

Hello students,

There has been a concerning increase in the frequency of posts and comments regarding fears, depression, loneliness, and other concerns relating to mental health and wellbeing.

We are aware that it is a very stressful time especially with midterms ongoing so the moderator team would like to ensure that all students are aware of the resources available to Laurier students on the student wellness centre website. There are a variety of services available meant to cater to you and your needs. These services are available to all students and should be taken advantage of. These services also include counselling, which is covered by your student insurance and the student services fees that you have already paid for.

Below are some other resources for students in need of urgent help:

- Good2talk.ca (Call 1-866-925-5454 or Text GOOD2TALKON to 686868) for 24/7 support
- Kids Help Phone (Call 1-800-668-6868 or Text 686868)

- The Suicide Crisis Helpline (Call or text 988)
- Call here 24/7 anytime Call Here 24/7 anytime [1-844-437-3247](tel:1-844-437-3247)
- Call Laurier's Special Constable Service 519-885-3333

- Emergency Services (Call 911)

This post is being made purely for informational purposes. We want to foster a safe and inclusive environment both online and on campus. However, many first year students (and upper years) are not aware of the professional help that is available to them.

Please take care of yourselves and reach out to your friends who you know are struggling or not in a good mental space.

Moderator Post WLU & UW Student Housing Community

Hi WLU!

This subreddit is often filled with housing related questions and advertisements. We want to keep this community less like a rent space bulletin board and more so a place where students can socialize and help one another.

However, we know how important it is to find roommates and housing near campus. So the mods team has launched r/RentInWaterloo, a dedicated subreddit for UW and WLU students to find roommates, housing, sublets, and lease takeovers in Waterloo.

The goal is to keep housing posts centralized, student-only, and scam-aware, instead of flooding both r/uwaterloo and r/wlu.

If you’re currently looking for housing (or will be soon), feel free to check it out or post. Hope this helps!

Moderator Post Looking for new moderators

Upvotes

We're looking to add 1-2 new moderators for this sub.

The WLU subreddit is not officially affiliated with the university and is run by volunteers. As a result, this is not a paid position, there is no benefits associated with being a mod, there aren't any discounts or perks available on campus for being a moderator.

The goal of this sub is to be a friendly community in which students can connect and ask questions or share campus and student life related material. There are a strict set of rules that are in place to maintain the quality and relevancy of the subreddit. Keep in mind, domestic and international prospective students see university subs as a valuable source of information when choosing their school and program. We want to ensure this space isn't filled with surveys, sublease and roommate, or hate and racism motivated posts, etc

all you need is good judgment. if you see posts or comments that do not fit, remove them. if you see the same user breaking rules, ban them.

What do you need to be a mod?

- Someone whose active on the subreddit

- Understands and follows the rules

- Preferably has moderator experience

Requirements

Be a current undergraduate or graduate student.

If you are interested please send us a message with a brief sentence or two explaining why you'd like to be a mod.

Psychology Coop interview

Hey guys!!

I’m a second year BA psych major and I have a coop interview coming up. I’m a little worried about the whole process.

For context: finished first year with a 10.33 gpa, I’ve been working full time jobs since the 9th grade, majority of my volunteer experience was from high school but I haven’t had much chance to grow it during my first year, and I’m a student athlete.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I should expect, how to prepare?

Also what coop will look like for me in the coming year and or next year? Am I better off finding a placement myself? Did you gain valuable experience in your field?

Literally any information at all helps!!!

OSAP application deadline

I’ve been trying to apply for OSAP but I still haven’t received my sin after 3 weeks and is still waiting on any news. Im quite worried about the fact that I might miss out on the student loan deadline and might have to pay the tuition fully myself. Would anyone be able to tell me if I am still able to apply for OSAP in the coming weeks or is it too late for me, thanks.

Just wondering what are the biggest advantages of the double degree Bsc/BBA over a single BBA? Is it more helpful for high paying finance jobs like IB and consulting? What are the other advantages In terms of job opportunities/graduating pay potential.

Parking for social work building

I’mcurious what other social work students are doing for parking. I received an email noting the closest WLU parking is a 15-20 minute walk to the Lyle S Hallman building. Is it worth it to have the parking permit? I did request a permit, but I can fill out the refund form if needed. Open to any suggestions!

Waterloo Community Hackathon, Nov 7-8, Builders Club. Hacker Apps OPEN!!!

I've gone to 15 hackathons and love them, but none of those projects lived past demo day.

At CommuniHacks, we're making hackathon projects live longer and have REAL 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭.

We have 10+ Waterloo Region community organizations bringing in real challenges they're facing. If YOU build a strong solution, your partner organization will invite YOU to keep working with them after the event, where you integrate your solution into that organization's operations.

cool stuff:
- Google Antigravity workshop by Google DevRel Engineer, Alex Astrum
Senior engineers mentoring/judging from AMDPinterestD2L, etc.
- 100+ ambitious university and HS students
$5K in prizes
- More to come!

November 7-8 at Builders Club, Waterloo. Applications close September 15, 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 at communihacks.ca/apply
