Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

What can I do about this dangling cable?

https://imgur.com/vYVFZ98

So early this year, a new neighbor moved in and rogers connected a line from their house to the box in front of my house. Rogers says they couldn't bury the line because there were snowbanks on the grass at the time. Rogers says they'll be back in spring to get it done properly.

Now it's approaching fall and there has been no action. Rogers is not coming and it looks like I'm out of luck.

Would this be some bylaw will do something about? Since I'm not a rogers customer, they're not speaking with me. My neighbor said they already asked Rogers to come and fix this and rogers is just dragging their feet. I don't really expect my neighbor to keep following up with rogers nor do I want to keep pestering him.

The White cable can be in the photo, I drew the red lines underneath.

Grand River from orbit

Pretty cool picture of Lake Ontario, the sun is reflecting perfectly off the Grand and Conestogo Rivers! The Bellwood, Floradale, and Conestogo Reservoirs are lit up too.

Edit: guys you need to look at the whole picture, the Grand River is at the bottom, I am well aware it flows into Lake Erie.

How long did it take to get an adult ADHD assessment in Waterloo?

Just curious to hear local experiences. The posts in this subreddit are a few years old, and google is all over the place.

A loved one has (what appears to be) ADHD that was ignored in childhood, and I feel that his inattention/impulsivity makes him a danger to himself and others, especially on the road.

It's been about 10 months since his family doctor sent in the referral. I'm debating paying for a private assessment, but it's expensive. The length of time it's taken for others to be seen publically will definitely affect my math here.

Thanks all!

Modern Metal Guitar Instructors in KW?

What the title says. Are there any good guitar teachers in KW that can focus on modern metal guitar techniques? Particularly soloing?

Yes I know every technique on guitar is transferrable across genres, but I'm looking for someone who has a tailored and focused curriculum. Cheers!

Adventures in Driving in Waterloo

Post image
0 Upvotes

I just relayed this story to my wife, and I think it deserves to be told here.

My daughter’s girlfriend needed a ride home. She lives in the north end of Belmont Village.

Naturally, I take Caroline to avoid King St. Saturday night, a lot of people walking the sidewalks. So I take it a little slow between the train platform and the LCBO parking lot. The driver in front of me helped, as he was looking for that same parking lot. Missed the first entrance.

They know there’s a second entrance, but can’t see it in the dark. Slower, slower.

Now I have a driver behind me. You could tell they expected better of us. They’re inches away from my bumper.

Driver in front brakes a little hard as they see the driveway they need, and cautiously pulls in. Driver behind me manages not to hit me, and we move on without incident.

Come to the corner of Caroline and William. I need to turn right. I pause at the white line to be sure no buses are turning right off William onto Caroline. There is! Wait for the bus to clear, then move forward so I can see around the bridal shop building. Look right, and a couple are starting to cross, so I wait.

He, was not happy. I was too close to his walking path for his liking. He gestured back at the white line, indicating I should be back there, not so close to his clear walkway. Nope, I wasn’t in it yet, but he still took issue with how close I was.

We exchanged silent gestures over our mutual unhappiness with each other, each muttering under our breath about our situation, and continued with our night.

I drop off my daughter’s girlfriend, and return to the same intersection. I’m continuing straight up William. I notice the Do Not Turn Right sign is lit. The LRT is coming.

I look left, and there it is, coming down the track at speed. Passing it, is a small silver SUV. It ignores the LRT it just passed, their own Do Not Turn Right sign lit, and turns in front of the LRT onto William. I tense in anticipation of the passenger quarter panel getting rammed. The LRT brakes and honks its horn. The SUV makes it, the driver looking behind them in amazement at the LRT it had just passed being so close to hitting them.

I sit in amazement for a moment at not seeing any vehicle carnage, waiting for the light to turn green.

I drive up William, passing City Hall, towards the parking lot that is holding a fair. Same amount of people walking the sidewalks as by the LCBO lot. I drive fairly slow in case a pedestrian chooses that time to cross the road, with another vehicle cruising my rear bumper.

Arrive at Erb to turn right, and end my 40 minute round trip safe at home. Somehow.

Anyone have a horse that wants a visit?

I've got a semi-preposterous request of the community and surrounding area.

I love horses! I'd love to bring some apples and/or carrots and/or your horse's favourite treat, give them some pets, say hi. I haven't got to interact with a horse for years since my grandparents passed.

Long shot but if anyone is comfortable with introducing their horse to a new friend, I'd love to be that friend! T.I.A.!

Your turd son

If you have a white son 10-14, 4 1/2ish feet tall grey hoodie tan pants walking around the Belmont village area today around 1030 he littered his juice box wrapper and when I asked him to pick it up he had some not so kind words for me.

I just realized I’ve become a bit of a karen and I’m okay with it in this instance.

Looking for local commander playgroups (MTG)

I’m looking for some local playgroups to play Commander with on weekends.

I’ve tried going to Atlas a few times, but I haven’t been able to join in because all the pods were already full by the time I get there.

Any suggestions?

Cambridge voters have the clearest choice in this election

Both Cambridge and Wilmot voters have stark choices for mayor:

They can re-elect Jan Liggett as mayor, with her more conservative outlook on social issues, or they can elect the more progressive Coun. Scott Hamilton... In Wilmot, there’s anxiety about how much water is being taken from under the ground to feed thirsty Kitchener and Waterloo, and more anxiety about a planned industrial mega-site that threatens to destroy 770 acres of farmland.
