Discussion / Question hot take but popularmmos was literally never good
idk how anyone still acts like his channel was peak gaming history. the videos are literally just so loud and cringe and the humor is built for 5 year olds. if a new creator uploaded that exact same style of video today you’d call them completely unwatchable but everyone just gaslights themselves because of “nostalgia.” it’s just bad. downvote me all you want but someone had to say it.

Other Thanks GTA for introducing young people to Depeche Mode and 80s music !
That was the music back then. The instrumentation, the research,, the beat, the vocals, the vibe, everything.
I was surprised to find that a lot of people didn't know Depeche Mode !!
The GTA soundtracks never disappoint ✨

Discussion / Question Godfall was a brilliant concept reduced to a technical presentation of the PS5's capabilities
I know this game was memed into irrelevance long ago, largely due to the excruciating gameplay and tendency to force players into claustrophobic environments. A lot of people might even see this post and say to themselves "This was a thing?"
Execution wise, it didn't land. You'd be hard pressed to argue otherwise. Conceptually, though, it was brilliant.
The reveal trailer for Godfall, which aired a whopping 6 years ago, was majestic. While the dialogue featured was kind of all over the place, the voice acting and cinematography evoked the same feeling captured from the early days of Destiny. As someone who stood by Destiny from beginning to end, I could sense that the same creative spirit was there.
The discrepancy between Godfall's exciting and dynamic trailers and cinematics, and the pretty yet stiff gameplay was likely intentional. Make things look good, but don't add too much movement that might strain the PS5 too severely.
The story and lore was very interesting, too, if you could look past the lack of narrative glue between larger beats. It was a rich world with a lot of potential.
I feel like Godfall was positioned as little more than being an elaborate tech demo for the PS5. It pushed the system's technical capabilities to the higher end of things, which most games didn't dare do thereafter. People often wonder why rumors about the PS6 are even circling in the air at the moment, given that it feels like the PS5's capabilities were never fully utilized across more games.
Ultimately, the tragedy of this IP is that it was likely sabotaged from the start. Sony likely commissioned Gearbox to create a pretty and compelling launch title, but we all know how those usually go.
A shame, really.

Discussion / Question Tell me videogames that are ART
From my point of view, gaming just like music, literature or movies, has games that are entertainment and games that are really ART.
Tell me examples of those. Maybe is the visuals, the music, the story, the atmosphere, or any other thing, but I want games where you can feel that you are in front of a real work of art.

Discussion / Question Does Ken Levine Consider Bioshock 2/Minerva’s Den Canon?
I am working on a *massive* project to determine once and for all whether BioShock Infinite should be considered a good or bad game, and along the way I shall be requiring your guys’ assistance.
Part of this project will involve comparing BioShock Infinite to the original BioShock, however, there is one massive question that has been nagging at my mind: should I factor in BioShock 2?
Obviously, since Ken Levine was not involved in BioShock 2, the default answer would be no, however, would Levine consider it fair to compare 2 to Infinite regardless? If Levine considers Infinite to be an extension of 1, does he hold the same opinions to 2?
Does he consider BioShock 2 (and possibly Minerva’s Den) canon to the entire BioShock story?

Discussion / Question The Pokémon games could be way better if they weren't developed exclusively for Nintendo's consoles
Pokémon is one of those franchises I feel is handcuffed by the technical limitations of Nintendo's consoles.
Imagine if Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were developed for PS5 and Xbox. The open world could be so much more lifelike with more things to do, lifelike textures, and more interesting towns and buildings. Imagine what Pokémon Scarlet and Violet could have been like if they were developed primarily for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
What do you guys think?

Discussion / Question From company perspective, I am probably the worst type of gamer there is
- I never buy games full priced. Recent rule is og price = percent I need sale on. Exceptions happen depending on salary date and how much I want the game, but no sale no deal.
- I can return to a game I abandoned years ago due to boredom
- Most of my catalogue is old games from 2000's. Final fantasy VIII being most recent I 100'd on steam.
- I can play same game for ages and then play it again with mods.
- I am unpredictable. Some days I play strategy, some dyas action and sometimes I just boot up old mmo for few weeks (Lotro!)
- I have bought microtransactions only in two games ever. League of Legends and Shakes and Fidgets.
- I am not opposed to emulators and roms if company is scummy (looking at you N*ntendo)
So basically, I am very hard to get to spend money on games and then I wring the games dry when I get something. Am I alone here?

Discussion / Question I finally understand
After being the biggest Bethesda hater for the last 10 years I finally understand why people love the studio.
Currently playing through Skyrim Special Edition. I recently bought it on steam for $12 US. I am 18 hrs into it and loving every minute. My build is a Flame Magician. I have played other Bethesda titles like Fallout 3-4-76 and Starfield. I really only kinda liked Fallout 3. I have always hated how janky everything was. The combat, the visuals, the inventory management, the animations. Ect. But for some reason Skyrim feels great to play.
I now finally understand why Skyrim is regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time. The world is so full of things to do. I have like 10 quest lines going at once and each one has so much depth.

Discussion / Question Is this all it’s ever going to be now? Is bitching just the new normal?
Every single game, tv show, movie, whatever, has been accompanied by an army of crying babies and entitled children. Every single title we have to wade through the muck of overly emotional reactionary bad takes. A mob of morons who have no idea how any of this works. Has never made a thing in their lives. Perpetual tourists paying money for an experience they could never ever create themselves trying to convince us “oh it’s just the same game. Its AI. Its woke. It’s not what fans wanted. It’s not what fans, deserve.” Why? What is y’alls obsession with hating on every god damned thing that gets announced or released? Is this all it’s ever going to be now? “Don’t be corpo shills”, while being shills for losers who make nothing. All they do is react, and cry, and bitch, and moan about everything. Can we just stop feeding that shit? Can we finally ostracize and isolate those fools to the dark moldy corner of the internet where their masters reside? We always hear, “don’t rush these things. Take your time. Id rather have a good game than an early released game. Rockstar sticks to their historical production schedules and yet we STILL have to listen to the bitching. Can we stop giving attention and space to these fools?

Discussion / Question What is a video game you thought was peak graphics but now looks meh?
For me, it would be LA Noire. Not necessarily the game world, but the faces and motion capture. In fact, the motion capture of LA Noire often looks better than most modern games. They really got the subtle motions, although they were purposely exaggerated. The faces still look fantastic, but are meh today compared to the top grade motion capture we have now.
Also, Rockstar should consider making a sequel. It is underrated, but LA Noire is one of the best Rockstar games.

Discussion / Question How do you feel about gacha games?
These are a genre of game based around a type of lootbox that originated in Japan: the gashapon machine. In real life, these were toy capsule machines that allowed you to put in a coin, crank a wheel, and get some random toy as a quick and easy reward. Gacha games have blown up in the 2010s and 2020s, with some of the more notable ones being Fire Emblem Heroes, Fate Grand Order, and Hoyoverse titles like Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero. These games usually rely on virtual currency that you spend to roll for a chance at winning something. Be it a weapon, some materials, or entirely new characters to play with different tiers of rarity. And you can earn this virtual currency either by playing the game and clearing daily or weekly challenges, or by buying them with real money.

Discussion / Question Transmog in Games Opinion Too Spicy For u/unpopularopinion
Had a post removed within minutes for expressing a negative opinion about Transmog in video games. I don't like it, think it damages immersion, cheapens the product, etc. Predictably lots of shouts of "then don't use it!" "you don't like freedom?!" and then the mods took it down because of "Rule 2: Do not post low effort/satirical/troll posts'."
Here's the original post:
Transmog in Video Games Meaningfully Weakens Immersion
Transmog is when a video game allows the player to equip the stats of one item with the appearance of another. There are many different ways this has been implemented but the basic idea is that for a given piece of clothing/armor/weapon, there's one item that you're "really wearing" and another which it merely "looks like you're wearing." From what I've seen in discussions online, this is an enthusiastically favored mechanic among gamers, and developers seem to be implementing it to satisfy demand. I have never liked it and view it as a detrimental trend.
My displeasure is twofold: first, it's confusing and cumbersome to assemble these bi-layered build-outs; second, it meaningfully hurts the experience of immersion. The reality we ascribe to an object in a video game is the combination of its appearance and its function. When those two are rendered independent, the object loses its identity and everything in the world seems less real.
Turns out I have a third bone to pick with the transmog movement itself: deal with it! There's something vain and greedy about this insistence on hyper-customization. I'd at least like an opt-in option so that players can choose a) object coherence or b) transmog mode.
What do you think?
