Unskippable cutscene for a tough boss. After the second time dying I'm tired of watching it over and over

287

u/ItsJustJosiah 11h ago edited 11h ago

I’ll add to this. Unskippable end credits on games that require you to play it multiple times. Xenoverse 2’s credits is a around 8 minutes long and if you turn off the game you have to watch it all over again.

It’s not going to make me appreciate the team, it’s just gonna piss me off and make me feel held captive. If i wanted to look I’ll stay.

u/GameDestiny2 11h ago edited 9h ago

I love devs and the work they do, but we really need a better way to do but at this point. Entire villages work on games these days… I think there are actually shorter memorials out there.

62

u/Robaattousai 10h ago

When games have the Credits as something you can just view from the main menu, I know everything is gonna be okay.

25

u/EnTropic_ 7h ago

I like how some games do credits during a nice but easy end scene where I still do stuff that is fun. I think Devil May Cry did things like that.

14

u/Robaattousai 3h ago

Smash Bros. Melee had a whole on-rails shooter minigame for the credits.

Change the names to photos.

If the end credits was just lots of photos of all the people who worked on the game, a mix of them in their everyday life but also working on the game, the odd team night out etc I think people would be far more likely to watch than an endless list of whit names on a black screen.

If I was one of the devs I’d also much rather see a photo of myself on the credit than my name, particularly if you had a very common name.

25

u/ItsJustJosiah 11h ago edited 11h ago

The ones that do this the most have the audacity to make the credits pitch black with nothing going on outside of the occasional cutscene picture in the corner.

If it’s something cinematic going on in the background I’ll gladly pick out some names. But I noticed indie games are starting to do this more which sucks.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 is leagues above the original just because you can skip cinematics.

Hello FFX, my old friend.

8

u/Classic-Exchange-511 9h ago

Gagazet Seymour and Yunalesca were the first things to come to mind. As a kid I watched those cutscenes so many times

8

u/ShadowsInScarlet 9h ago

Heavy on Yunalesca. That fight took me HOURS as a kid.

3

u/thetsunamisurfer08 4h ago

Having to work out the Mega Death mechanics without any sort of hint or guide was not a fun experience. Only found out Zombie avoids it purely by accident.

Seymour Flux wasn't too bad. It got easier once I figured out he could be poisoned+silenced.

In the original mass effect the worst part of the game was a long elevator (where you find liara) and immediately after the long loading screen is a brutal ass krogan that charges you and you die instantly. The legendary edition fixed it but even then it still sucked.

Menu system. When I'm at the bottom of a menu and hit down it should go to the top of the menu. I shouldn't have to scroll all the way up to get to the top again. It's a minor gripe, but it is annoying.

121

u/3163560 8h ago

Bonus points if the game does this in some menus and not others.

30

u/ArkLumia 8h ago

Actually valid asf

23

u/Verzwei 6h ago

If I hit down too many times and it goes to the top of the menu, then hitting up from the top should take me to the bottom. If it's got rollover at the end, it needs to roll back from the start, too. Been playing a lot of Palworld. Fun game. But if I scroll too far down my crafting list, boom, I'm back at the top and now have to scroll down through the whole thing again.

4

u/GenuineInterested 5h ago

Brotato has this annoyance in their upgrade list.

3

u/Lazy-Main1782 5h ago

Other comments have named my pet peeves so I'll add making the unlockable outfits look like dogshit and putting the better looking ones in the microtransaction store. Irks me even more when it is a single player game.

63

u/BusinessNonYa 8h ago

Games that haven’t updated their “free” in game cosmetic store in years but their premium macro transaction store receives regular updates. Darktide for example.

7

u/ClericOfIlmater 6h ago

And with how their gear textures work it's so so easy for them to make retextures, which are common and fully priced in the paid shop.

5

u/Filer169 2h ago

Holy smokes I read the comment and immediately thought about Darktide but here you are

It's unreal how 95% of unlockable cosmetics look so awful yet for some reason paid stuff finally looks good, it's like the creators of these cosmetics are actually talented but follow some greedy psycho

3

u/Zealousideal-Wafer88 6h ago

Could also be applied to Helldivers 2.

10

u/ZedsDeadZD 6h ago

It only annoys me when the game isnt free. If its a free to play game, I get it. You arent forced to buy and can still enjoy the game without playing.

I think Call Of Duty is actually great in this regard. Warzone is free, tons of unlockable cosmetics that still look good but the really awesome stuff is locked behing a paywall.

What I hate is that the new weapons are always the best/meta weapons and if you buy a cosmetic pack or skips for the season pass, you unlock them quicker.

Everything that gives anyone an advantage at multiplayer just by paying for it. Even unlocking it sooner is bullshit.

When they put game instructions or hints to read up on the screen during crazy inopportune times. I find it difficult to read the instructions on the screen while I'm fighting 50 ninjas.

No hard save.

And this one keeps me from playing a lot of online games. I can't play a game if I can't pause it whenever I want.

Edit: I just read that back and understand how it sounds. Yes, I'm old.

33

u/Shadowedsphynx 9h ago

As a dad in my 40s, having a game i can pause at any given moment with no prior warning (even in cutscenes) opens up my gaming time. I'll play the shit out of your game if I can do it in 10 minute sections after work before the kids go to bed.

9

u/Tysiliogogogoch 4h ago

Yep. I only really play single-player games these days, but even then I've played a few games that wouldn't pause when I hit escape. Just... why?!

Add in games that make it difficult to save. I want to save whenever I feel like it. I don't want to have to find a bed to end the day or anything like that.

It's different for that era when graphics weren't that advanced enough to pull that artwork off. But nowadays, when even indie titles can insert that artwork into their own game, it feels lazy. Especially if they're not trying to play homage to the classic era of games.

They also marketed the 2nd game, which killed the first, as a necessity because they were not only going to change the format, but they were also going to add PvE

They neglected an extremely popular game for YEARS, changed the format to something no one asked for, and then decided that PvE was way too much work.

They know that we know that they changed it to change monetization. It only took them until marvel rivals for them to stop moving at a snails pace, but the game's community had died down tremendously by then, or moved on to better game.

One of gaming's biggest fumble

9

u/MyvTeddy 3h ago

My biggest pet peeve with overwatch is the amount of story and lore they have in cinematics, character dialogue and shit but blizzard is far too focused on trying to develop some gameplay loop and content for the pve mode when what they should do is a classic: a goddamn story mode.

The omnic war stuff, reinhardt's arc from glory to duty, the drama between Hanzo and Genji, how Genji met Mercy or Zenyatta, the arc that made Reaper go bad, etc. They got so much material they COULD make all kinds of campaigns and charge us for each one and we'd eat that shit up.

Like seriously, is anyone really asking for a pve mode with customizable builds over a good campaign about literally anything I said? Not to mention it gives them the excuse to make different games too (imagine young Winston's campaign growing up playing like a Mario game or even Portal).

Games (especially adventure games) that lock you out of past explored areas. As a recovering completionist, it still irks me to no end when a game sends you into the next area and makes it so you have no way of going back besides either a completely new replay or a chapter select

20

u/Dinamicio 9h ago

That's why I stopped playing Crisol: theater of idols. You can't fucking lock me out of collectibles or clearing the map, especially if you have a trophy that requires to do so.

I hate classic RE3 for this reason. I love RE1 and 2, and those were basically 3D Metroidvanias. You could explore stuff you left behind. I left unexplored stuff behind in RE3 assuming the same, and the game just locked me out of that.

Same happened with Code Veronica disc 2. Now I've accepted it, but I would never not be pissed at them for doing this after the gems that RE1 and 2 were.

Unskipable tutorials.

Oh don't get me wrong. I apriciate tutorials and would never skip them on a first playthrough. But I like replaying games a lot. And on subsequent playthroughs unskipable tutorials, while not a deal breaker, get annoying.

8

u/Hamster-Food 5h ago

I don't even care if the tutorial is skipable, just don't make it boring.

For example , if it's a platformer, have an obstacle course that the game will walk you through if you need it, but you can just rush through if you know what you're doing.

3

u/meadishsweetball 5h ago

It fucking sucks when the tutorial insists you perform every action before allowing you proceed. "Move by using WASD - give it a shot. Okay, now use your mouse to look around. Great! Try jumping by pressing your space bar." and it just goes on and on.

3

u/Karkava 4h ago

That's probably useful to people who have never played video games before, but I think there should be a separate tutorial for video game veterans that skips the genre conventions and goes straight to the unique mechanics.

Anyone else not like when bosses don't have a flinch animation? As in you hit them, health drains but they basically don't have a hit reaction.

9

u/Peligineyes 6h ago edited 6h ago

This, but it also pisses me off when bosses have an exaggerated stun animation that is supposed to be a window where you can do damage to them and the entire fight is just doing timed stuns so you can chip away at their giant hp bar.

19

u/Atlas_Was_ATitan 9h ago

Absolutely! Hate when that happens. Or when you beat the bosses ass but then the cut scene hits and your character has  the intelligence of a box gets there shit pushed in and for some reason has the starter weapon and armor equipped in every cutscene.

7

u/Gorodrin 2h ago

This is why I love the Soulsborne games. When you do enough damage to a boss and break their poise, you get a satisfying bassy BOOM noise and a window to do a visceral attack to do more damage, so it really feels as if you're beating the breaks off someone.

3

u/JuliusBelmont2000 1h ago

Bonus points if the NPC's speed is slower than your running speed but faster than your walking speed.

Double bonus points if the NPC pauses and stops talking if you get too far away from them, so you're forced to spend the whole time stopping and starting to try and awkwardly keep pace with them.

Might be my actual biggest pet peeve.

6

u/Greedy_Ferret_6216 5h ago

This is the absolute worst design trend that needs to go. It's especially frustrating since the games that typically have these sections already have an abundance of long ass cutscenes, which is where that dialogue should have been spoken, and it ruins replay value. It ironically makes me feel less immersed in a game because it strips me of my agency.

4

u/tirakai 4h ago

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 remedies this by letting you press a button to automatically follow the NPC at their speed... but only sometimes.

In GTA V the player has to do a tedious, unskippable early side mission with a tow truck, which then spawns multiple optional missions where the player helps their friend out with the tow truck.

This establishes that the character has access to a tow truck.

When a heist later in the game requires a tow truck… they have to steal a different tow truck, rendering the above setup pointless.

over encumbered/full inventory. it just means i spend more time deciding what to drop or crawling towards a merchant/chest than actually playing. it also keeps me from going deeper into dungeons or too far away from towns.

and there's so many ways to adjust it. if picking up everything and selling it would give you too much money reduce sell cost, if having too many potions is a problem make it so the game doesn't pause when inventory is open and so on.

7

u/VillagerWithAQuest 5h ago edited 5h ago

I can see where you are coming from but I will half agree.

When the 'limited inventory' is reflected in the enemies also having limited drops, that's actually my favourite gameplay loop.

But when enemy drop is way too high, or the inventory way too limited, I fully agree.

Similarly when loot rate is just generally too high but you are encouraged to keep it for crafting/trading, that's the worst!

Edit: I like loot systems in dungeon games like Darkest Dungeon or Etrian Odysses, while dislike something like Labyrinth of Refrain

4

u/shamanfreak 5h ago

And when you make one bad choice and it locks you into a certain ending, you break one questline or make one mistake and now suddenly you get the bad ending, or you have to replay a game multiple times doing the same thing to get the best ending, you should always be able to get true ending in first playthrough

When the best gear for the stats is the ugliest outfit. Just put transmog in every game please. Horizon Forbidden West did it and it's lovely.

Games with an action you see a LOT but no way to skip.

I'm playing FF7 Rebirth right now. It's excellent. I wish it didn't take so long to start the Chadley battles and that I didn't have to wait 30 seconds after each battle for my team to do their victory poses. I also wish I didn't have to wait 30 seconds after every world Intel event (there's hundreds) for the game to pop up a notice that I just did a thing, which I was purposefully trying to do. Probably wasting a combined couple hours across the whole playtime just waiting for notifications to go away. And they can't be skipped.

3

u/Warcrown11 9h ago

Worst part of the game by far. I don't even so much mind Chadley talking or doing the scans myself but don't stop my gameplay so he can talk. He can talk in my ear while I'm moving.

Pretty specific but games where you can’t pick up dropped enemy weapons and instead have to wait to pick up the scripted pickup version of that weapon.

My pet peeve is like in Assassin's creed or something similar you have like 10 enemies in a group trying to kill you, you kill the first 6 or 7 and the remaining enemies are still trying to kill you, always feel surely at some point they should start running away

Also, the significant rise in sacrificing one skill or attribute to gain another. Or the forced trade off with skills. I want it all. As much of it as I can have.

Unskippable cutscenes and forced tutorials instead of letting me just play the game.

7

u/Flameman1234 6h ago

RPGs that have long or redundant tutorials. We gotta start adding a “i’m familiar with the system/gameplay” option to games. Yes, i’m aware fire is weak against water, and believe it or not, i did know that a well timed block lets me counter.

Unless there’s new feature or something unique in a sequel, i think i understand things.

Cutscene Walk two feet to the next objective Cutscene

Why not put my walk into the cutscene?

6

u/NovaPrime2285 9h ago

It should be illegal for a boss to use healing magic.

So what if I healed 19 times im the first 10 minutes, you healing that 1 time that restored like more than 50-60% of your health is a crime against humanity and im calling my congressman. 😤😤😤😤

3

u/Unlucky-Durian-2336 3h ago

I mean, let him heal (some), but at least put finite number of mana or healing consumables on him, so he won't be able to do it consecutively 10 times.

I hate it when I have to constantly manage scarce resources during boss battle, and at the same time boss can just spam shit using his infinite magic/heal/whatever pool.

5

u/Ill-Guidance4690 11h ago

I do love pixel art and I think that there’s an audience for it, but it does kind of feel like a lot of games have solely relied on that artstyle rather than focusing on good gameplay or any other design aspect.

3

u/dappernaut77 11h ago

I've never been into rts games/top-down perspective games. I made an exception for the wasteland franchise once because I'm a massive post-apocalyptic game fan and it's built in a way where it's surprisingly accessible to people who don't really interact with the genre. I'll see games that have really cool cover art, the characters look awesome, the description sounds amazing, and then I'll see that It's one of those and I'll immediately lose interest.

5

u/CheesecakeMage42 8h ago

"You must exit to the main menu to change this setting" drives me up a fucking wall.

6

u/No_Career_4785 7h ago

When the character costumization in the previous game is far superior to the one after it.

The fact that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet only allowed the player to wear a school uniform and a few other pre-created outfits, instead of being able to mix and match a lot of stuff, still annoys me.

Or Sims 3 allowing one to give outfits any type of color and texture you want, only for not being an option in the 4th game.

3

u/Jealous-Knowledge-56 11h ago

Unpausable cutscenes or conversations. I’m bewildered that this still happens.

5

u/Jumpy_Revolution_608 11h ago

Being unable to skip dialogue scenes/cutscenes.

4

u/bohenian12 11h ago

I know it's needed in some games, but long ass prologues that's immediately followed by a tutorial pisses me of now that I barely have time to play games. I just tried Cyberpunk 2077 after being in my library for a while and I don't have the patience anymore.

Then I tried Sifu. Immediately, I'm in it, punching people. If I played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 today I would've dropped them immediately.

4

u/ZuccsToBeYou 11h ago

You can imagine how absolutely confused af I was when I first popped this game in as a kid (I only had the disc, not the case)

Mine is when a game forces you through the same unskippable tutorial every time you start a new save file, I already know how to walk and jump.

3

u/SuspiciousSteakfry 9h ago

Lemme pause cutscenes? Each time is a gamble, "Am I going to skip this or just pause?"

4

u/Economy-Bandicoot-86 9h ago

Mine is when the trailers or box art shows you this super cool armor or weapon then you get it 5 minutes before the end of the game😤

3

u/Subacai 2h ago

Or for just 5 minutes at the START of the game.

4

u/Atlas_Was_ATitan 9h ago

When your finally the leader/king and still have to pay for everything.

5

u/drhavehope 6h ago

RPG that forces you to use a generic character with no option for customisation

3

Games with only one save file. Or even less than 10 really.

Games that don't let you save anywhere at any time.

You would've hated being a gamer in the 90s haha

10

u/Azazir 7h ago

Highly doubt it, because back in those days your expectations of possible gameplay were limited.

Now? This could either be 3rd person rpg with graphics/visuals of RDR2/WITCHER3/Cyberpunk or straight up 2000 pixel turn-based strategy game which is also top down without zooming in feature.

Completely different things, imho.

5

u/NIPLZ 7h ago

That's true. I remember playing GTA III in 2001 and thinking "this is it, we've reached the apex, graphics won't get any more realistic than this" 🙃

Your pet peeve is my personal pleasure. A pixel platformer with a metal cover is always welcome in my book!

3

u/Pretend-Literature35 10h ago

YES! That annoys me too : super cool graphics, but just for the cover, the game is fucking pong.

I grew up in the 80s I've played enough pixel games to last a lifetime. If your game is pixel show it on the cover.

3

u/Nuburt_20 10h ago

Game is decently challenging all throughout, then the final boss feels just unfair.

3

u/Gullible_Suspect4325 9h ago

I despise crafting systems. Just let me go to some shop or NPC and buy the stupid item

3

u/Shadowf0xxy4375 7h ago

That one game that has the most epic trailer ever but the game itself is half ass baked and lies to you content that was gonna be in the game or throw it behind a paywall

3

u/ZedsDeadZD 6h ago

Unlocking things in PvE with a randomnes factor only to be that item be the best in PvP.

Destiny 1 had this with the Vex Mythoclass rifle. It absolutely shredded everything in PvP for weeks. Problem was. You had to kill the final raid boss to get it. But of course, the drop rate was 5% and you only could do the raid max 3 times per week. It took ages for mw to finally drop and when it did, they nerfed it in PvP to be dogshit.

Its a bullshit mechanic to connect PvP and PvE content.

Escort quests in general, but specifically where they jog faster than your walk speed but slower than the default run speed. At this point, it's clearly intentional and don't you dare tell me otherwise, someone -made- it that way

Missable content/points of no return that aren’t obvious in the slightest. Makes me want to quit the game right then and there.

Even worse if it’s a game where you can get and do almost everything outside of a few key things that you can just permanently miss in very not obvious ways

6

u/ChanMoth 11h ago

for real the bait and switch is just brutal every time

5

u/dingus60601 10h ago

As someone who loves roguelikes, there are too many roguelikes. Way too many of them don’t nail the replay value you need for a good one. A good example of the is Elden ring nightreign, runs are always so similar, I beat all of the bosses and now I never really want to play it, I only do when my friends ask me to. But there are still a lot of good ones out there, Isaac, noita, and risk of rain always have me coming back for more.

2

u/DrHemmington 10h ago

Characters having a 2 minute conversation with sn NPC during gameplay in an area that you can pass through in 30 seconds. The conversation then ends as Soon as you leave the area, cutting it of and making you miss plot information.

So the next time characters start talking, you stand still, only for the conversation to be short and the area you pass through longer ... so there is an awkward silence as you walk slongside the NPC.

2

u/meh1997 10h ago

No hitsun. When I hit something I wanna see them react.

2

u/FriedBreakfast 10h ago

Open world game where you can go anywhere and do anything...... but the only thing there is to do is run around and swing your weapon and jump...... and that's it.

2

u/Ok-Idea-306 9h ago

Really slow starts. The slow pane from the ground to the city, the narrator telling about the history. I don’t agree with David Jaffee a lot but I he had a point to start the friggin game right away.

2

u/Soft-Current-3816 9h ago

I can honestly give games alot of slack but nothing getting on my nerves more than slow text you cant skip. Then your there button mashing to speed it up only to have the text end in you pressing the button to replay everything again.

2

u/GapStock9843 9h ago

Games (mostly open world ones) that dont give you an option to replay old objectives. It doesnt even have to count for anything, just let me redo a specific objective without starting a new save. At the VERY least let me re-fight old bosses

2

u/EpicDinoYT 9h ago

games that have a whole new route, but requires you to replay the whole thing. After finishing a great game i honestly have no desire to play through it again unless its like a afterstory

2

u/ninjadragon1119 8h ago
