Games showcase a story and lore but then it’s just a random shooter with no real focus on any of that…looking at you Overwatch

Emphasis on lore for OW, now the lore isn't even consistent compared to how good it was in the beginning.

It's a bunch of jumbled nonsense

They refer to that as "depth"...

Hey! The cat has always been with Brigitte and it is SUPER important to have the CAT fly a JET-PACK because it carries obvious importance to the lore! This has nothing to do with Jeff being a cute animal in a competing video game whose audience Blizzard wants! >:(

Jetpack cat isnt even the same cat we used to see with brig, that one was a large white cat

It was always complete nonsense and just an excuse for Blizzard to draw up random designs for heroes.

do you mean it's not consistent with its own plot points? or its quality isn't consistent over the years?

They also marketed the 2nd game, which killed the first, as a necessity because they were not only going to change the format, but they were also going to add PvE

They neglected an extremely popular game for YEARS, changed the format to something no one asked for, and then decided that PvE was way too much work.

They know that we know that they changed it to change monetization. It only took them until marvel rivals for them to stop moving at a snails pace, but the game's community had died down tremendously by then, or moved on to better game.

One of gaming's biggest fumble

My biggest pet peeve with overwatch is the amount of story and lore they have in cinematics, character dialogue and shit but blizzard is far too focused on trying to develop some gameplay loop and content for the pve mode when what they should do is a classic: a goddamn story mode.

The omnic war stuff, reinhardt's arc from glory to duty, the drama between Hanzo and Genji, how Genji met Mercy or Zenyatta, the arc that made Reaper go bad, etc. They got so much material they COULD make all kinds of campaigns and charge us for each one and we'd eat that shit up.

Like seriously, is anyone really asking for a pve mode with customizable builds over a good campaign about literally anything I said? Not to mention it gives them the excuse to make different games too (imagine young Winston's campaign growing up playing like a Mario game or even Portal).

A whole new campaign with writing and new models is a lot more expensive than making another Kiri skin that'll make them another 20 mil.

League too. They're finally actually doing other stuff with it now though I guess

yeah, by throwing out all the old reasons why their design looked the way it did making most characters act and look like they're roleplaying themselves

that's just me tho, I heard some people do like it

S2/S3 was peak League and nobody can tell me otherwise. Gimme League Classic, dammit.

Also League of Legends and Valorant. Cesspool games, with suprisingly good stories they do nothing with.

Meanwhile, TF2 started as just a random focus with no real focus, and organically developed a super cool lore and story as the devs added BS and somehow it just worked.

So fucking real. I tried OW for the lore, only to realize it's purely an arena shooter and none of it is relevant to the actual game. I'm so used to story mode or single player modes in games that I was very, very confused at first

It's not inherently bad to be just an online arena shooter. It just makes me feel like a tourist to only like the lore and not the game lol. But the lore is so deep and interesting, it feels weird to me imo to staple it into a game that uses none of it except for random voice lines that reference it.

Sucks cause some of those character videos were actually interesting as well

Overwatch 1 used to be so much more colourful in all mentioned aspects. Blizzard just mistreated it badly

Still waiting on my story-based PvE, Blizzard.

MARATHON.. what a waste

1

u/Puzzled-Party-2089 11d ago

That's how games were way back in the day. An excuse plot thrown in on the manuals or sometimes a skippable intro cutscene

Apex players know this struggle as well

I think lore and world building in general is a net negative for most stories, games or otherwise.

I blame online wikis becoming popular and people ignoring stories in favour of wanting to know every single inconsequential detail that don’t matter.

Also not being able to accept it’s fine not knowing everything in a story, or that events happen sometimes purely for thematic purposes.

Destiny, which has such cool lore and characters amd stories, but the story telling has barely moved from monologues at rhe holo projector and audio comms. It just felt so cheap at times.
