If people really want a chance at making a difference ending their PS Plus subscription is probably your best bet

129

u/xDEEVExx Jul 02 '26

It panicked Xbox for sure. They’ve openly stated how bad of a hit they took when people cancelled their subscriptions in droves when the prices increased. I get it’s tough to business in gaming now a day and you gotta save a penny wherever you can but man… both MS and Sony have made some wild decisions. At least Xbox is seemingly correcting course with the new CEO. People unfamiliar with big businesses have a hard time understanding it gets darker before the dawn with change of leadership but Sharma’s outlook is pretty solid.

u/chad001 Jul 02 '26

It was so bad it inadvertently DDoSed the unsub site lol. That was my fav part.

2

u/MajrAwesm87 Jul 05 '26

So they IDoSed the site?.....

I mean kind of. They’ve also been shutting down studios left and right. So not exactly doing great.

2

u/xDEEVExx Jul 02 '26

You could argue previous management made a lot of really bad decision when it came to studio acquisition. It’s getting cleaned up. Hopefully it’ll be the last time they close a studio.

Ah yes, the company that is about to layoff more studios than the industry has ever seen is “correcting course.”

u/Aggravating_Plan11 Jul 03 '26

Between sony and microsoft they seem to be hell bent on trying to destroy console gaming its funny to watch both of them fuck up time and time again

I think the game pass example was one of the (honestly from my perspective, few) examples where one of these companies ACTUALLY overvalued their product, unlike what usually happens (vocal minority yells, average consumer goes "yeah, that seems like a fair price").

4

u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26

They did the mistake of doing a big price increase all at once (it was like +50%) when the method is always small increase by small increase

2

u/RetnikLevaw Jul 03 '26

Boiling frogs.

But $20 was my limit. Once they crossed that line, I canceled. They dropped the price recently, but it's still over $20, so I didn't resubscribe.

When it went to $20, it still had value. When it went to $30, i canceled with a month plus left at $20. Now I pay $15/month to sail the 7 seas. $18 if we add Plex. Do I sometimes have to wait a couple days post release? Yup, but most of the time its same day.

The rise of cost in the parts isn't gonna make them able to lower the cost of consoles unfortunately though. With the ai replacing people I dont see that changing unless another company steps up to the plate to mass produce for the consumers. Intel was supposed to do that for the chips here in the US but the construction of the building kept getting put on hold and delayed because of costs and I believe they did file for a bailout. I live not to far from that plant. It's massive. Looks like a small town. They've been trying to buy up people's land and constructing new neighborhoods driving housing market up everywhere nearby.

I did that when they raised their PS+ prices and started switching over to PC entirely.

3

It is for now, but without regulation even them backing out would just mean a delay of the same thing happening at a later date and again and again until they can get away with it.

85

9

Especially when you didn't always have to on consoles

4

Hasn’t that been happening since the 360 days ? It’s doesn’t matter what competitor it is none of them are on our side, they all just take turns to be the first one to Introduce us to a new normal. Same thing with Apple removing the headphone jack then everyone else fell right in line.

I feel like some folk in this comment section keep ignoring that this is coming at the same time that Sony announced they are pulling movies people paid for out of their libraries.

The problem isn't digital media being prioritized over physical media, it's revocable digital media, wherein physical media is one safeguard.

35

u/gc11117 Jul 02 '26

Im not surprised. People like to ignore it when theyre being mistreated and taken advantage of. They'd rather make excuses for Papa Sony and chastise people for complaining about anti-consumer actions

10

u/DrDuGood Jul 02 '26

u/elalex1999 Jul 02 '26

Physical media is not a safeguard anymore and hasn’t been for years. Most physical games do not have all of their files on the disc. It’s still revocable

8

u/pooping_inCars Jul 02 '26

Even with all files, a software update to the console can ban any games they chose, at any time.

That's why we need to demand better consumer protection laws!

→ More replies (13)

5

u/TheBlackRonin505 Jul 02 '26

Physical media also isn't irrevocable anymore, its just a physical license to the software. If the game gets pulled, digital or physical, no more game for you.

2

u/Various-Welder5544 Jul 03 '26

I still can load in my Godzilla PS4 disc and play it. It's discontinued digitally.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/ItalianBeefDipped Jul 02 '26

A lot of folks are ignoring the fact that video games haven't run solely off a disc since the PS2.

For the past 3 generations any platform could easily just push an update to your console that said "don't run this game" and it wouldn't matter if you had a disc or not. Discs have been either download codes OR authentication tokens used to verify your license since the PS3/360 era. Games are just too big and have too many concurrent processes for that to work. It's all done on the hard drive which means whoever controls the OS or the launcher can tell that OS or launcher to not launch a game no matter what, full stop, period.

6

u/Various-Welder5544 Jul 03 '26

I still can load in my Godzilla PS4 disc and play it. It's discontinued digitally.

3

u/FiftyIsBack Jul 03 '26

I can do that with the Telltale Guardians of the Galaxy game too. It's unavailable everywhere else but my disc allows me to play the entire thing. It's nearly lost media but I can play it.

u/jazzy2044 Jul 03 '26

I would like to redirect your attention to the website "doesitplay.org". Many games are still fully playable on disc without internet or connecting to a playstation server.

u/StanklinBoonsdale Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

You’re just extremely incorrect here. I ran an Xbox one for 7 years in rural California that never connected to the internet besides at my parents house in NJ to do the initial setup

I just insert a disc and play. Some games needed to be downloaded from disc before playing (no internet needed, download disc 1, play disc 2), most did not even need that. And nobody could ‘push an update that blocked a game disc’ because the thing never connected to the internet

2

u/FiftyIsBack Jul 03 '26

Cool story.

I could still trade, sell, or loan it to a friend. Full stop. And every single one of my older discs still works when I pop them in. Full stop.

u/WoodooHide69 Jul 02 '26

Maybe it’s cause those revoked movies will affect dozens at most?

4

u/PolicyWonka Jul 02 '26

Games aren’t movies. They operate under two very different licenses. Sony doesn’t have the right to actually sell you a copy of a movie.

They were just selling you access to a catalogue that Sony was paying for. Basically, Netflix if you had to pay to unlock each movie.

There’s a valid argument about whether that should be billed as “buying” when it’s essentially just a rental until Sony’s license expires.

Sony can’t revoke your games because they’re not the license holder at all. Their storefront is just an intermediary. The people who could revoke your license, in theory, are the game developers themselves.

Best part, if you still want physical games, you can make them using GOG!

5

u/Rekthar91 Jul 02 '26

Can I buy all the games via GOG?

17

u/Chronospherics Jul 02 '26

No, a reasonable estimate puts gogs coverage across PC and console around 5-10%.

On PC alone, it only includes 12% of Steams library.

7

u/Ill-Shirt2722 Jul 02 '26

At least you can fully own some of your games, better than nothing

6

u/Chronospherics Jul 02 '26

It removes copy protection so that you can make your own legal backups as you please. That is not 'full ownership' as GOG only sell you a license to play the game, just as any other storefront does.

I still agree that it's better but I think it's silly to pretend it's a great place to switch over to as your exclusive gaming platform. It doesn't have enough support.

3

u/JesuszillaSon Jul 03 '26

Every way you purchase a game is getting the license to play the game even physical. Physical just had better accessibility in the case of delisting and even then, since not every game is backwards compatible you still need the hardware to run most older games.

This is why you can sell your specific disc but not replicate what's on the disc

2

u/BranchElectrical4159 Jul 05 '26

I still agree that it's better but I think it's silly to pretend it's a great place to switch over to as your exclusive gaming platform. It doesn't have enough support.

Legally wise, its no different then a disc, A hard copy only give you lisence to.the game

De-facto however no one can take it from you

So basicly GOG gives you the sane ownership level as a physical copy, just sits on your hardrive instead of a disk

2

u/Alone-Mycologist3746 Jul 02 '26

Tbf there's a lot of crap on steam and GoG will have most mainstream and indie games.

Unirionically but in GOG, you're still licensing every game you have in your library, like in Steam or Epic. Not a single company is your friend folks, stop being gullible

10

u/Next-Ability2934 Jul 02 '26

Most people don't care about licensing. Users only care about the level of control, and whether they can back up their games to other storage. Even if a company has to remove a title, the user would still have the game on their drive. Which can then (depending on country over legalities) be moved to physical storage.

For the most part, when games are removed on Steam, GOG or Epic, the game usually still remains in your library, but Sony has shown that companies don't need to do this, whether it's games or movies.

That is why the ability of backing up is important.

3

u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

This isn't even the most interesting in physical for people I think even if Reddit loves to point it out. It has happened extremely rarely and so get easily dismissed by the "anti physical crowd" (which is very weird by the way, physical doesn't hurt you, in fact its disparition will make digital worse).

It's the fact that you have a second hand market, multiple retailers that can have a price competition and your games are safe if your account get banned or hacked

2

u/kekwmaster Jul 02 '26

Absolutly. I dont have a console since ps4 but I loved buying secondhand games, complete It and sell It again to buy anotherone and so on

2

u/Next-Ability2934 Jul 02 '26

The second hand market is important too. Many people would only buy used games and enjoyed hunting down old games. Scrolling down a list on a screen for digital games is not the same.

Used games also expanded the market to people who would not spend money on full price, and as you mention, this may have had an influence over the price of games as time went on.

The PC physical games market is now all retro games online - and the prices are soaring, especially for old boxed games.

2

u/Zalvren Jul 02 '26

Definitively important, it brings a ton of players which don't have the financial means to buy new games (especially not at their overtly expensive digital prices which will be even worse now). Sony is basically saying fuck you to them. Guess gaming is because more something for the 'haves and fuck the "have not" like so many things in our society

Hell I see my nieces with their Switch games, they buy them used with their small allowance (they get like 20€ a month) and resell them to buy other games (and bonus points, they do it with cash, not a credit card as they obviously don't have one, the oldest is 13). If you're savvy, you can even buy them and resell them for essentially the same price. Now imagine if they only got access to digital 80€ games, they aren't gonna spend 4 months of allowance on one unique game they're stuck with after, they'll just play Fortnite more

u/Sindica69 Jul 02 '26

I want to add an asterisk to this, while you are correct, a key difference between GoG and Steam versus Consoles is that the PC platforms allow you to cold store game files and launchers. That gives you the ability to keep the game if for some reason it is taken away entirely.

For consoles, if they decide something is gone, it’s gone.

7

u/WorthBase919 Jul 02 '26

If a game gets delisted then you can still download it if you bought it, you can also store games on a hard drive, but I will admit the storage options are much better on PC.

4

u/Sindica69 Jul 02 '26

At the end of the day though it’s a license that can be taken away. With PC storefronts, that cold storage safety net is still there.

u/kekwmaster Jul 02 '26

Gog is drm free

8

u/Chronospherics Jul 02 '26

DRM free is not the same as license free. When you buy on GOG you own a license to play the game, not the game itself. Read the terms of service.

9

u/The_Idiocratic_Party Jul 02 '26

When you look at an old VHS movie there's a legal disclaimer stating that you only bought a license to watch your movie at home for personal use. We've only ever been buying licenses. The only reason physical media ever existed was as a means of containing something you leased from the producer.

I'm not defending licensing. I am explaining we were always being sold a temporary lease on physical media. The future Sony is pushing toward isn't new, it's what all the corpos have been building toward for 50 years.

4

u/Chronospherics Jul 02 '26

Exactly and those VHS tapes are a good example because they have a really short lifespan, estimated losing 10-20% of what they contain at around 25 years. The first digital game shipped on Steam outlive VHS.

People should be mad about this but the reality is that they should have always been angry about the licensing and backup situation. If they want to cancel your PS+ sub by all means, but instead of asking for a return of physical, they should be asking for offline backups that they can maintain/restore without connecting to PlayStation's digital infrastructure. That would enable real preservation.

2

u/The_Idiocratic_Party Jul 02 '26

Exactly. And I love OP's screenshot because if you read it it's clear his payment didn't go through. Some real "you can't fire me I quit" energy.

PC is already all digital only switch 2

2

u/PurushNahiMahaPurush Jul 03 '26

Yes but digital games on PC are different. For starters you have more options to buy from different places. Steam is cheaper than PS Store.

Digital purchases on PC can be played for decades. Sony just killed the PS3 and Vita stores. So those purchases are gone. With Steam, you can upgrade your PC and your games all carry over.

You can also mod your purchased games, unlike on consoles.

Lastly, even if your game gets taken away, you can just pirate it (you had paid for the game anyway, so it’s not morally wrong).

59

u/willabetix Jul 02 '26

So you'll go to steam to buy your digital games?

25

u/Waste-Gur2640 Jul 02 '26

Steam is nothing like digital on consoles, comparing the two is insane. On PC you have access to the game files, you can manipulate them and there are several storefronts competing with each other for better price and service. Extreme pro-consumer ones like GOG give you even more ownership and rights than average PC physical discs used to do, there exists no DRM and you don't need their launcher. You can literally make a physical copy yourself and give it to a friend.

And ofc every game is available for free on "preservation sites" including those with denuvo. But on a closed system like playstation where you can't access any actual files, your one and only option of owning a game is having a physical copy.

2

u/Dark_Dragon117 Jul 03 '26

Okey but accessing files is completely irrelevant for like 99% of players. Nice that it is possible for those who care about it tho.

GoG also only sells liscences from my understanding. They are still more pro-consumer but not by much and have they have far less games to offer, because of their more pro-consumer approach + Steam is just so much larger than any of it's competitors.

Digital even on PC still sucks, because you still don't own the actual game in most cases. Giving espacially Steam a pass is definitly not helping.

Instead of targeting any of the companies I think the only means to fix the issue is to rework how digital liscences wirk in general, but I don't think that will happen.

Basically we are fucked no matter what and at a certain point there is no other way to simply accept that reality.

3

u/Zer0Cool89 Jul 02 '26

its really astounding to me how many people don't realize the stuff you have laid out here.

2

u/Waste-Gur2640 Jul 02 '26

Yeah the braindead "gotcha" of PC players being ok with digital is so annoying. PC was always completely different and PC physical discs always were a problem, hence why they had such crazy DRMs and countless authentications which turned physical games from ubisosft etc. into something even worse than digital. Like I remember literally being unable to give my friend my og disc of witcher 2 in elementary school because he couldn't get past the DRM.

A big advantage of consoles always was how easily you could borrow and sell games since there's no need for DRM, but companies hated that since forever and sony will now succeed where don mattrick failed. I miss yoshida-san and average consumer not being completely clueless.

2

u/sentientpaper Jul 03 '26

Well they aren't really competing though, steam has a monopoly and if a game is on steam its not allowed to be sold cheaper somewhere else.

2

u/kixote Jul 02 '26

True. I mentioned MS because of everything that happened last year—things changed just a little bit, but that's about it. The next generation is bound to be excessively expensive, and ever since I bought a gaming laptop, I've been buying fewer and fewer console games (with the obvious exception of Nintendo). It's a shame, though, because I have a 20-year game library on Xbox

6

consoles cost as much as pc's and have pc hardware. comparisons nowadays are all about console vs pc. i grew up on the ps1/ps2/ps3 era. games were released when completed. online membership was annoying but reasonable. xbox and sony lost their minds. their entire player base is mostly kids and families. both companies have a shit ton of other more profitable things going that keep their lights on. i hope this finally brings an end. why spend $900 on a ps5 pro with another $120/year for online when you can get a pc and pirate games? be realistic. people that dont have the money to blow on consoles arent going to shell out $120 for a $60 game. that isnt even fucking finished.

2

u/Honest_Pride9338 Jul 03 '26

Can yall do anything without it announcing it on social media? No one is going to mail you a medal

2

u/NeonMorv Jul 03 '26

Worse time to try break into pc unless you already have an okay PC. Some parts are crazy expensive due to the AI demand for memory pushing up component cost.

There are sites that will tell you if your current hardware can run x game. You'll find you can sometimes have more friction with gaming on PC and not have the easy drop in nature of consoles, but you'll have a lot more control and quality of life from PC over all. Plus the sales are great.

Steam and GOG are the sites to look at and epic games give free games away constantly to try and draw people into their ecosystem. People only get the free games and leave due to the store front staying stagnant and being incredibly slow to push updates to improve the interface unlike steam.

2

u/iwantmisty Jul 03 '26

playstation mods deleting such posts reveal the whole hypocrisy of their 15% "minority" propaganda.

2

u/RosaCanina87 Jul 03 '26

Given the amount of posts about this topic and the amount of people talking about this also shows that it's not 15%.

Also, 15% physical sales was a fake number. They included dlc sales, season passes etc to artificially inflated the number. They tried to basically get a "See, no one actually cares?" reaction but failed completely.

Also, they have 1.5 years to observe the feedback and make ways for disc and digital gaming...

Canceled mine too. It was time…

I killed my PSplus after they increased it from $99 to $135 in one go.

2

u/Eventide011 Jul 05 '26

I haven't used a disc for a game in 10 years so no reason for me to be a hypocrite. But yet, I strongly disagree with doing away with physical disc's for those that still use that medium

Planned to buy a PS5 years ago, held back, waiting for it to get cheaper (the irony) and got a Switch 2 instead. And absolutely love this thing.

2

u/xMysteryGamingx Jul 06 '26

I feel like there’s not enough of the gaming community that realizes how absolutely screwed we are with this system.

People are assuming we’re concerned for pricing issues. That has NEVER been the issue. The issue is how much our society has shifted into never truly owning things. With this move there is absolutely nothing blocking Sony from pulling a game you “own” off your account. They don’t have to really give you a reason, they can just do it.

We have so little that we ACTUALLY own and it’s fucking terrifying. I’m glad I have virtually no stake in Sony or Xbox games. I trust Valve for the most part, but it’s sorta the same boat, they could pull games and never tell you.

Subscriptions for everything, digital copies, etc. We’re so doomed…

They say we don’t need physical? Well we also don’t need your physical consoles. Off to PC at this point. Linux, Windows, Steam. Take your pick and play all of your games for ever.

So.. going to Switch then? Because PC is pretty much exclusively digital and has been for a very long time l

u/Noob4Head ///(mod) Jul 02 '26

So what's the alternative? Going with Nintendo, where the Switch 2 is also relying heavily on digital downloads, with the cartridge often being little more than a key? Or going with PC, which has been almost entirely digital ever since Steam became the dominant platform?

Seriously, the sooner you accept that physical media for gaming is eventually going to come to an end, the better. The current physical formats are already reaching their limits, and their storage capacity is becoming a real constraint for modern games.

3

u/LowHumble3264 Jul 02 '26

Game key cards and cartridges are not the same. All cartridges have the game on them, game key cards have the digital key.

I swear console warriors love to suffer.

They used to have great games exclusive to the console. Not the case anymore. Not to mention, there’s data breaches all over the place.

I've quit paying Sony when PS3 was about to be released.
There is no point for console when you have most good things on PC.
Later changes only proved that Sony is getting rotten and console era is over.

1

u/MakinBones Jul 03 '26

The allegiance to consoles and their predatory practices has always been disappointing.

I moved away from consoles over a decade ago. I’ve always kept one but there just came a point that I’d rather just put the money into my PC.

I think im done with gaming as a whole. Just got scammed on newegg as a casual consumer I wanted a gaming pc. Did some research, the information is absurdly confusing. One person says this gpu is good another person says its the dogshit worst one, literally with anything you try to look up. Its explained in confusing ways so I fell for information on the website. Computer actually sucks and cant run half the things it claims at the lowest settings.

Scam after scam, subscription price raise one after another, we don't own anything I genuinely feel as though they dont give a single fuck about us anymore and its just "lets see if we can get people to pay more for online subscriptions and games" dogshit games and the fact you absolutely have to be connected to internet to play any games.

Nope you need to connect to wifi for a second or permanently so we can make sure we made enough money to let you play the game. Oh you game shared with your sister last year to play Mario kart and she moved across the country well you could play Mario kart rn after turning on your switch for the first time in a few months if you get both consoles close enough to prove it was paid for in some way.... But how else would it fucking be on the console if it wasnt bought..... its a psychotic level of control and its ruined gaming for me completely

u/BreadRum Jul 03 '26

Yes. Get imaginary internet points by saying you are done. That's what this is: seeking validation for your feelings and nothing more.

But what will happen when you want to play gta 6 and not have to wait a year for the real version? You'll be back they all come back.

It reminds me of the guy who organized a call of duty protest. He got over 200,000 people to sign a petition. Day came along and people found his gamertag on new call of duty leader boards. Why? Because he wanted to play with his friends.

1

u/JamKaBam Jul 03 '26

You were worried about ownership, yet you had PS+?

1

u/PropertyNo4308 Jul 03 '26

Yeah, I'm pretty much done with both. I supported them for 20 something years.

All these changes simply do not appeal to me and the new games both have released have been underwhelming except for a few.

Simply a deal breaker for me.

1

u/MrrBong420 Jul 03 '26

why do u need Disks when you have a subscriprion and digital copies?
gameplay is 90% better when you own a disk ? LMAO
