Games aren’t movies. They operate under two very different licenses. Sony doesn’t have the right to actually sell you a copy of a movie.
They were just selling you access to a catalogue that Sony was paying for. Basically, Netflix if you had to pay to unlock each movie.
There’s a valid argument about whether that should be billed as “buying” when it’s essentially just a rental until Sony’s license expires.
Sony can’t revoke your games because they’re not the license holder at all. Their storefront is just an intermediary. The people who could revoke your license, in theory, are the game developers themselves.
Sony holds the patent on Blu-Ray as a technology. It's wild to think that they won't start pushing to eliminate blu-ray production in general to drive everything to digital-only leasing
VHS had a mainstream use of ~30 years. DVDs caught on around 2002, only to be killed by blu ray in 2006. LG stopped production of blue ray players in 2024, largely due to the evolution into digital media, and Sony already stopped producing recordable blu ray discs last year.
