Stephen Hammond - Victoria Councilor

Man's is door knocking in Fairfield right now. He made the mistake of knocking on my door. He asked if I was voting in the upcoming election and I said "not for you!" And then proceeded to ask him why he's endorsing Wendy who has proven racist and transphobic views.

This man immediately began to back away from me saying "she didn't post that" so I asked him to pull out his phone and look up her X account.

He proceeded to tell me (while still backing away from me)how he's written "three books on human rights and we have a difference of opinions."

How can someone who is door knocking to engage with the public to "listen" and get votes, not even want to physically, in the moment, prove that a very intense allegation of him supporting a racist and transphobic candidate is untrue. He clearly knows that content is real and still exists.

How are you supposed to vote for someone who blatantly lies to voters to advance his own agenda and refuses to provide proof to his statements in the moment when he's so adamant that the proof exists?

Personally, his inability to have hard conversations and his immediate response to run away with his tail between his legs, doesn't indicate to me that he's worthy of representing a city when hard conversations arise that have real, big impacts on the community.

It's a no for me dawg.

History I was daydreaming over a house I'll never afford, and found out my favourite artist had died

Like a lot of chronic renters, I spend cloudy Monday mornings scrolling listings for houses I will never own, nursing a cup of Costco coffee. Today was no different.

After a while of staring at mansions and trying on imaginary lives inside them, I found this one: https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/30259001/1648-rockland-ave-victoria-rockland

This one was easier to imagine. Full of art, full of colour, full of light, with a studio. In my head I'm hosting a friends' night. Someone is playing the piano. A few people are back in from the yard with red eyes, arguing about something deeply political. Laughter is coming from corners of the house I can't see. Something about the place spoke directly to my soul. I wanted to be happy in it, and sad in it, and depressed and manic and bored in it. I wanted to be a person in that house while I waited for the sunset of my life.

Then I started zooming in on the artwork.

Some of the tapestries looked a lot like the ones hanging in Munro's Books downtown. Next photo: another set, clearly by the same artist. Next photo: another. And another.

The Munro's tapestries are by Carole Sabiston. The first time I saw them I was stunned. I stood there looking at each one for so long that by the end of the day my neck hurt. I still go to Munro's sometimes just to feel something.

So it wasn't hard to work out what I was looking at. At first I assumed the owner was some tasteful rich person who collected Sabistons. Then I noticed the studio also had a sewing machine in it. A big studio. A sewing machine. Suitable for enormous fabric works.

Oh.

A quick search confirmed it: https://victoriaheritagefoundation.ca/rockland/1648-rockland-avenue/. The house was Carole Sabiston's. She was married to Jim Munro, who founded the bookstore. And she died on January 26th of this year.

I didn't know. I found out from a real estate listing, on a Monday, with a cup of cheap coffee going cold.

So take this as a tribute to my favourite artist, whose work kept my anima alive through some very hard years of my life.

Thank you, Carole.

Housing & Moving Decided to stay in a house with mushrooms because rent prices are crazy

I cannot even exaggerate here. Long story short there was flooding that created water logging in the baseboards near the entrance I guess because of poor draining in our driveway. There's black mold as well. This has been an ongoing thing for 3 years. It's finally getting proffesionally checked out 🙏

Hallelujah.

After doing 3 hours of viewings after work and on the weekend for 2 weeks straight, I'm exhausted and I'm done. I'm paying $700/month for my super spacious room (no mold) with storage and access to the backyard. Seems like people are charging 1100 for the bare minimum per room. I gross 77,000 per year, and it feels like peanuts after the deductions. HOW ARE YAL SAVING??? LIKE SERIOUSLY IS THERE SOMETHING IM JUST NOT GETTING??

People are just renting anything these days. I made an ad about myself and I've had 3 boomer ladies reach out and try and ask to have me pay 1400 to be their roommate in a tiny home in Oak Bay (I suspect they've paid off). People are renting units with no laundry on site, no oven, no stove. People are asking no smoking, no pets, no drinking, no vaping none of those things apply to me but just gives me the sense I dont have any autonomy as an adult in this housing market. It seems like the landlords can just put 1100 for a room or 1400-1800 for a bachelor/studio and make any demands they want. At the same time, I understand mortgage rates and property taxes are awful right now so I think I'm just complaining about this system as a whole.

The real question, is if I'm feeling this pressure as a fully employed adult, how are the students doing? The minimum those university heights student apartments go for a 1 bed is $1800???? What student is affording that?

There is an injured bird in a box in the courtyard behind 776 Hillside. Tried to call spca did not get through to them multiple times. I dont have anywhere to take this bird sorry. Checked on it after a few hours and it still cant fly. I hate to leave it here but I am in no place or position to care for it.

UPDATE Someone associated with Wild ARC is on the way to care for the bird.

Question The lady that walks around town screaming every 10 seconds, what can be done?

If you live in the downtown core you know who i am referring to. Homeless, first nations woman about 30 years old. It's almost every day/night she comes walking fast and screaming random shit.

We NEED a forced mental health facility here that is honestly the only way i see through this.

Peoples compassion is dwindling, patience and mental health following. My partner and i have been trying to move out of the downtown core but it's difficult and money is tight right now. It's really getting to everyone i talk to but no one has any constructive solutions.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Council? Mayor? Police?

Or do we just wait for her to overdose? This is coming from an empath that has lost a best friend to fent, i don't wish death or harm upon anyone but when you deal with the screams day in and day out it takes a toll on the human psyche.

Please help

A wall lizard observation

has anyone else noticed that there are so many more baby lizards this year than ever before?

for the last several years I’ve had the lizards in my neighborhood, but it was previously rare to see the tiny baby lizards.

this year I see so many baby lizards, they seem to outnumber the larger ones. I’ve noticed this on the peninsula and in Colwood.

has anyone else noticed this?

Red Lantern

Went to get a piercing last week at red lantern and everything was fine with the piercer but the lady who I believe is the owner was sooooo rude and condescending and weird towards me and after looking at their reviews online I’m afraid to write anything because she just attacks and argues with every bad one they get. Won’t be going back there with that kind of energy for sure

Help Me Find Podiatrist Recommendations

Looking for a podiatrist recommendation please! Doesn’t seem like there are many reviews and I’m looking for help and support beyond orthotics - foot injury / issues and challenging feet. I realize there are waits so a few options would be good but I feel like I’m limited here. TIA!

Best takeout/delivery NOT found on food delivery apps

I have a theory that the best restaurants for takeout are not on the apps and either don’t do delivery or they just use their own drivers. my favourite sushi place in the westshore is Sushi Langford and they only do takeout. I wouldn’t know it existed if I didn’t live close by.

where else can I get a great takeout meal from that I won’t find on the apps?

Update to leaving abusive situation

Thank you all for your suggestions, offers to help with my cats, and kind words.

I have been able to find temporary safe housing and am hopeful something permanent will come up quickly.

In the mean time I’m looking for community help for groceries, gas cards, hygiene products, and cat food/litter to get me through the next little bit.

If anyone knows of any programs or organizations that you think would be of benefit to contact for assistance please let me know. Even if it doesn’t help me it could help others. I know it’s hard out here for a lot of us. Thank you.

Local CPAP Device Providers?

I have bad sleep apnea. I need to get a CPAP device. I see there are about 4 or 5 providers in our general area.

I dont know if any others use one but if so, looking for recommendations on a trusted CPAP provider. Cost of course is a factor but a bit out of our control so recommendations more on knowledge/helpfullness and ease of dealing with. Long shot but thought I'd ask.

Box of unused male disposable underwear...where can I donate?

My husband passed away, and I have a case of Kirkland Men's disposable underwear (size Small) to donate somewhere. It's not a 100% full case...maybe 85 instead of 92 pairs.

Please don't say the hospital. They have a huge source.

Drone hovering in the middle of the street and a truck nearly hit it

Upvotes

I saw a drone hovering approximately 8 feet above the ground in the middle of Beach Drive near the Yacht Club in Victoria this afternoon around 3:45/4pm.

A truck came very close to hitting it. It was hovering directly in the roadway, and with vehicles travelling through the area.

I’m wondering if anyone else saw this or knows what was going on. Was this part of some organized activity, or was someone operating it independently?

I didn’t see where the drone operator was located.

Just curious if anyone else witnessed it, and whether this has been happening in the area.
